Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Where pets are Morons as well. Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy the world of animals.

I've heard that puppies are chick magnets.

Meet The PetMorons

poppy-3409.jpg

Hi,

This is Poppy, my new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Her birthday was 10/13/21, and I got her on the 17th of January.

There’s 3 modes I can photograph her in. Sleeping, barely awake, or full blur mode. Blur mode is a work in progress testing all my skills as a photographer. Until then, this will have to do!

I go by clutch cargo at AoSHQ. Thanks!

You're welcome Clutch. Congrats on your new addition. May Poppy provide you joy and companionship for many, many years.

Here’s Jack, last seen getting his nose nipped by Anna, about 6 months later, doing what he did best: annoying Ugly Joe - John

Oh my that picture is priceless. Jack certainly loves Ugly Joe. He looks mighty comfy on his big buddy. Thanks so much for this today.

Hi MusHum,

I'm pet-sitting for my mom while she takes a vacation.

Teddi the Dog and Abbott the Rabbit have been on the thread before. They're best friends and get along very well. They've figured out how to tag team their humans for t-r-e-a-t-s. If one of them gets a treat, the other sees it and expects one too. They've kept me very busy; I don't know how my mom keeps up with them!

-D, an occasional lurker

What an adorable odd couple. There's nothing like being tag teamed for S-H-N-A-C-K-S. Good luck with your baby sitting project. And thanks for this sweet contribution.

Here’s something maybe a tad different for your pet thread—-which I enjoy immensely. Guess the breed. For your information it’s a rare hunting breed with but a couple hundred in North America. The Picardy Spaniel originates in the Picardy region of France, ground zero for two world wars and thus their scarcity. This dog, Philly, has been trained in conformance with North American Hunting Dog Association standards and has tested to a Prize I. The first pic below is Phil studying for the test. The other pics see him in his favorite environment, pointing a pheasant and then being released to hunt a field. This dog, and really a breed characteristic, is very biddable (trainable), affectionate and possessed of great stamina and energy. He can sit still in a duck blind in the morning retrieving downed birds in the water and hunt pheasant in the fields all afternoon finding, pointing and retrieving birds….which he has done. Thus, the versatility of the breed and the cross training necessary to enjoy his talents.

Regards
7man

We normally don't show 2 photos of one pet. However, we are suckers for Sporting Breed dogs especially ones we have never heard of. Sounds like the perfect hunting companion. Drop me us a line and let us know where you got this beautiful doggeh.

This is Mikita, she’s a five year old Lab-Boxer mutt and Linus, he’s eleven years old and rules the roost. We rescued both at six weeks of age. As you can see life is hard. - Marty

Hard? Heck that's one big understatement, don't you think Horde. It appears the Lion can lay down with the Lamb. Thanks for sharing today.

Sashi.jpg

Princess.jpg

Hi MisHum: Thank you for all your postings at Ace of Spades HQ, particularly the Pet Thread. My daughter always wanted to show off her two white cats. Unfortunately, they both crossed the bridge last year within two months of each other.

The smaller cat in the first picture is Sashi, who came to us from my brother-in-law who was moving from Florida to California, traveling on Interstate 10. He stopped in Houston and left us Sashi, claiming he would come back to get her. That was 10 years ago!!

The larger cat in the suitcase is Princess. She is a pound cat so we don’t know how old she was. She loved suitcases, although she never left the house! I bet she would have gone on to California on I-10.

Thanks for all you do on AoSHQ. I’m occasional poster Jayhawkone.

What beautiful cats! So sorry to hear that they have passed on. It sounds like they had a wonderful home life. And thank you for your kind words.

This is Ginger, a golden retriever/chow mix that we picked up about 9 years ago from Cheri Lucas' "Second Chance at Love" no-kill facility. We went to look at a different dog, who wasn't a fit with our (then) young kids, but Ginger stole our hearts and came home with us. She had just received training from one of Caesar Milan's assistants but had been placed there by someone having to move to a no-pets facility. She has been the best dog for us, and I wanted to share this zen picture of her that I call "The Sound of One Tongue Lapping."

She took the move from warm but socialist California to freedom-loving Idaho just fine despite the colder winters.

I would prefer this go under the name of "ID_Gent" instead of my real name. Thanks for all the pet pictures and stories.

We are happy to use a "nic" instead of your real name Rudy, J/K. Quite the pose there. Was it an easy sitting for Ginger? Every kid deserves a pet growing up. Glad you could do that. Thanks for sharing.

MisHum,

This is Saint, our site mascot, circa 1977, from when I was stationed at Detachment 4, 1stCEVG in Bann Germany. He's about 4 or 5 years old in this photo. He's in a tizzy because someone has just started up the vacuum cleaner off camera, the moment I took the picture.

Considering he had about 50 different masters at the same time, which changed every two years as people shipped in and out, he was a well adjusted dog. He just didn't like vacuum cleaners. Evidently somebody teased him when he was a pup.

Thanks, That Guy What Always Says Yeah Buddy

Thanks for going back in time to submit this photo. It's amazing how dogs will react to a vacuum cleaner. Some love it, believe it or not and others hate them.

What a great group of pets and stories today. Thank you all for taking the time to share with us. If you have something pet and/or animal related, you can send to us here at petmorons at gmail dot com.

God willing and the creeks don't rise we'll see you next Saturday. Have a great week!

12 Pets! Poor ugly Joe, but how awesome when they get along so well with each other. Even if it's just one of them. Sorry about the kitties jayhawkone, most people would be awfully happy to have 1 long haired white like that, but 2?

Great to see so many rescues. Which reminds me, I better keep up on the vacuuming so my pup is unphased as my last girls were.

BTW, I've gotten MUCH better at photographing Poppy, or maybe she's just getting more "in between" speeds. She's also put on 2lbs since I took that photo. She's quite a character. Her first bark scared her to death, but now she's turning into a talker. Also finally getting the concept of territory - she barked at the gardeners this morning.

Cats 1, 7 & 8 will be outside mousers. 2 - 6 & 9 will be indoor. All fixed. 6 females, 3 males.

20 That can opener cartoon breaks me up. Do they recognize the sound of these new-fangled pop-top cans the same way? I'm a bit out of practice - and this is all new. I know my cat could hear the sound of the can being pierced by an opener a block away.

Which brings me to a question I've asked before - is there a speed of smell? How is it possible for a dog to smell something 30ft away within half a second? Is there some sort of molecular chain reaction? Like a shark can smell blood in the water half a mile away - but doesn't the blood need to make it to them first?

27 rickb223,

I also despise people who dump pets. I've been witness to dumps from a moving car (on a highway) and we have "adopted" a series of cats that were dumped out in the country. Those dumped cats that we adopted were all great pets!

I've told this story here before - but my family used to live up in the hills of Los Altos, and at the very end of a long road - and the driveway was another half mile. People always drove out there to dump their animals, and we acted as an adoption agency (or foster parents). In a couple of cases the animals were really, really fucked up. Makes me want to chain these assholes outside with a 5' chain and their food and water 8' away. As a positive, all of our babies were in far, far better places once placed, I remember many of them fondly. We only kept 1 dog, 1 cat and 1 budgie. We had a very forgiving Siamese cat who tolerated all of it.

35 I think Tux views me as a personal groomer and comfy warm spot ahead of can opener. He gets dry food and just a bit of wet food which he doesn't finish off most times he gets it. He loves temptations treats though. He will do a meer cat imitation to get me to give him some (he quickly figured out I just melt when he does that) or come running if I shake the container.

38 Thanks for the pet thread MisHum. Great pets all.

Our call sign at Det 4 was "Courtroom" when airwings would call in for their simulated bomb drop/ECM training. The very first site mascot was a German Shepherd named "Judge", apropos considering our call sign. I only saw pictures of him on the hallway going to the briefing room.

39 Well Joe has given me a scare. He's about 12-13ish. A terrier mix. I was sitting down to eat and he gave out a little yelp. I looked at him and he was just standing there but when he tried to walk, he limped.
I thought at first he had caught a claw in his blanket, but his foot seemed fine. And now, two days later, he is better but still a bit of a limp.
Arthritis?
Pulled muscle?
He goes into the vet in a couple weeks to get a fatty mass removed. But not sure what's going on now.

40 Wonderful pets this week!

Poppy is adorable. I always wanted a King Charles and thought after losing our last lab, it was time for a smaller breed but we're suckers for punishment and got another lab. I'm reading Philly's curriculum vitae to him over and over to see if it makes any impression.

44 Well - we're getting a new shelter dog, I guess.

Honestly, I have not seen the dog. I can't go see the dog. Because, if I see the dog, it's a done deal. I do not have it in me to go see the dog, that needs a home, and say "no home for you". Just not in the cards.

Supposedly, there is a "trial period" for said dog. We all know that's bullshit. Once said dog walks into the house, he's pretty much vested. And Wife of Mine, being what she is, apparently has found another version of the fifteen year old dog we just had to put down. And we had to, and it sucked. Because she's fucking fair like that.

I've caught myself a couple times today asking about the damn dog, which I have not yet met. It sucks. It flat out sucks.

48 Every cat I've ever had absolutely loathed the vacuum cleaner. When I brought my second set of bookstore cats from the Humane Society to the bookstore, I gritted my teeth and didn't vacuum for a week simply to not upset them. Then I crossed my fingers and started the vacuum cleaner. They must have come from a home where someone vacuumed at least once or twice a day. The male would let me vacuum right up to his toes before he'd back up a couple of inches. The female let me vacuum her whole body with the wand attachment. Very strange.

I love the Picardy Spaniel. He goes from zero to 120mph in about two seconds flat. Is it hard to keep him occupied when he's not out in the field? One of my neighbors had two German short hairs that were absolutely crazy when they were stuck at home.

Daughter has sent some great pix that I keep meaning to forward to the Pet Thread. Maybe by next week (he said, again).

SonM is picking up a new dog today, something like a husky-malamute cross. Hope his cat is accepting.

Meanwhile, our cats continue. The black cat only likes to venture outside for brief periods. The yellow fellow likes to be outside as long as possible, weather permitting, frequently hunting, but also spends a lot of time curled up in the fuzzy pet bed on the front porch. In a sunbeam.

56 We haven't had a dog for about 10 years. We gave our last one, an Australian Shepherd, away to a friend who lived out in the country. His property butted up to 1,000 acres of USFS land. We gave her away because of bitchy neighbors. I used to see her quite often after that as my friend was one of my subcontractors and he would bring her to work with him everyday.

Been thinking about getting a new pup, but the wife says...no fenced in area, no pup.

57 Hi all... could use some prayers right now. Woke up to find my front door of my apartment was ajar somehow and my 3-yo cat Buddy was nowhere to be found. Thankfully Bella was still inside. But that was 5:30am and I had gone to sleep at 10:30pm. So Buddy got outside somewhere between 10:30pm and 5:30am. So I have no idea where he could be.

I read that 100% indoor cats usually do not go far when they find themselves outside, usually within 50 yard radius or so. So I am hoping Buddy is hiding somewhere nearby my apartment complex and someone will find him. I already passed around flyers I had made up at FedEx Printing and then used a bunch of different social media apps to post missing cat announcements.

But I am worried sick about him in this cold and snow in SE Michigan. And he has to be hungry, thirsty and really scared. So any prayers would be dearly welcome. Thank you.

Posted by: olddog in mo at February 12, 2022 03:50 PM (ju2Fy)

67 Hello, all,

Clyde, I'd think Buddy has gone to ground somewhere nearby. When Arizona the part-Maine Coon got out, he'd go less than 50 yards, more like 10-12, and then freeze, as if he'd just now realized that this world he'd been wanting to see before dark was big -- bigger than he expected. And I could scoop him up and bring him back in. Wolf the late mini-panther did get out a few times, but he just wanted a change of scenery. He'd sprawl on the concrete walkway and just relax. Good luck to both of you.

I just read this earlier as well. I have put out his food dish with treats and his cat bed, but I may add his litter box as well to hopefully attract him with the smell. Just hopefully don't attract the outdoor cats and other critters in the area (I've seen raccoons, chipmunks and squirrels).

79 Almost afraid to ask, but any updates on Chekov?
Posted by: Erik In Texas at February 12, 2022

***
Erik, I'm glad you asked that question! We ran him out this morning.

Our vet does think that the tooth trouble could be causing other issues. But Chekov is too elderly now for anesthesia; his risk of not coming out of it is too high. She's enormously encouraged by him walking plantigrade again, and in fact she pointed out that his jaw seems less inflamed after the antibiotics. Today he got another shot of that, and she gave us some more of the liquid appetite stimulant and another pain pill that can be crushed into his food if necessary. The arthritis shot we can give him 1x a week, too.

He made 3 kitchen trips to eat after we got home, walking pretty well. He purrs when we pet him, but he does not come to sprawl where we are. However, he isn't hiding.

He's never going to be a 5-year-old cat again, but he has not used up all his lives. (I'd guess he's on No. 17 and counting.)

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at February 12, 2022 04:01 PM (c6xtn)

80 Clyde - we had a cat do that - don't panic. Don't walk around screaming his name. And you can't lay bait to lure him back in, either, unfortunately. He's a cat.

You can, and should, just throw on a jacket and walk around the building. And like other folks have said - keep your gaze short and small. He's not far away.

You could always adopt! You might not need to worry about the wandering with an adult.

I had puppy proofed the home I'm in now for my mother, who had 2 of the same breed. 6-8' fence all around, double gate on 1 side. The front of the house has a 3' iron fence/gate all the way around - because my mother would open the front door and forget to close it.

I had forgotten that puppies are basically furry cockroaches. I had gone out to water flowers, and there's Poppy right under my feet. Somehow she squeezed through or under the bars. Of course, the game of "catch me, slowpoke" ensued. So she needs to be much larger before I risk the front porch again.

The Picardy is a working breed and I guide upland hunts so he's kept real busy and I think that's important for most bird hunting dogs. But, he has a turn off switch so he's been great in the house. Wife loves him if that helps

The first time Wolf slid out, he'd done it when some maintenance people were here and left the door open. I did walk around calling him, the same tone I use to announce dinner to my cats. It helped, too, that it was close to his meal time. Suddenly he squirmed out from under the step of the apartment next door and ran to me.

Buddy could be under a car, too. Especially one that parked more recently. It would be warmer under there.

95 41 -- Catman -- I know Siamese and Persians are completely different breeds, but maybe you can help me. My Persian is a cattery reject. For some odd reason, he hates to be picked up and held, which is not a problem except for one thing: grooming him. My Himalayan would simply lie in my lap to be brushed. I put the Persian either on a counter or the bed to try and groom him, but he loses patience with the whole thing after a couple of minutes. He'll let me chase after him with the comb for another few minutes, but then he is done, done, done. Is there a special way to hold a Persian down that tells it it's time to be groomed and to behave? I know his breeder combed him within an inch of his life the day I got him. Now, though, he has mats and simply won't hold still. His breeder lives a couple hours away so I can't simply pack him up for a quick visit home for a refresher course in being groomed. Any suggestions short of shaving him would be appreciated.

Evil. And now an evil game. She'll be looking for bottles now for the rest of her life. Or yours. Slippery floors and all.

I remember when my last pups discovered the "snack buckets" we had distributed around the house. Nothing tastier than kleenex, paper towels etc. from the snack bucket. So, I get some of these high-tech lidded trash baskets that are puppy proof. And, the $%^&! ex thought it would be neat-o to teach the puppies how to open the lid. So now there was $180 worth of useless new trash baskets around the house.

Sometimes I can almost understand spousal abuse.

Nurse, Chekov is 14.5 years old and had always been pretty healthy until a few days after his birthday last August. He went into a kind of shock when we evacuated for the hurricane. He's had troubles ever since.

That, of course, is the issue. We think he's ready to leave us, and then he rallies. Then he slides back a bit. We never know when the next rally or slide will be.

That happened to our cat once. She's an inside cat, but uses the dog's pet door once in awhile and will hang out in the backyard for 10 mins and come back in.
A few years ago on Christmas Eve she got out and must have jumped the fence. She was gone for 2 days and all that we can figure is that she may have gotten inside a neighbors garage or something like that because it was cold outside and she does not like the cold.

Knock on all your neighbors doors and ask them to be on the look out.
After her excursion she never did that again.

On the day we were to leave and go 500 miles to our new home, we took one last drive by our old house...got out, called him name for the millionth time, and he came out from the bushes a few yards away. 143 "You didn't get to fill out a "dream sheet" near the end of your training?"

Nope. Got my orders in July of '84. Went from the insufferable Gulf Coast humidity to Bismarck snow by September.

Good times.

144 On the day we were to leave and go 500 miles to our new home, we took one last drive by our old house... got out, called him name for the millionth time, and he came out from the bushes a few yards away. I was never so happy in my whole life because I was utterly devastated thinking he was gone forever.

That's such a wonderful story. I hope mine with Buddy has as happy an ending. Though I am really hoping I find him this weekend, tonight ideally. I dread him dealing with this bitter cold here. Supposed to be 7deg overnight tonight, 20 tomorrow 0 overnight, 22 Monday 8 overnight.

And thank you everyone who suggested putting litter outside. I did that as well just now. Not in a litter box, as I only have one and need it for Bella (who thankfully did not follow her brother out the door), but found a large food dish and filled up both sides. Hoping it is the smell that is supposed to attract them, not the packaging.

147 Praying for Buddy getting back home, Clyde Shelton. I mostly lurk but I do pray for Horde needs. Keep us informed.

When we lived in the country south of town we had some farm cats. Every so often one would wander off and never be seen again. However, Trixie, matriarch of the bunch was discovered a couple of yrs later living at a farm less than a mile away. Guess the food was better.

149 Thanks for the kind words. Ginger was on a photo/film shoot with Caesar Milan's crew the weekend that picture was taken, so she was in the best of hands regarding sitting for the picture. I would say she is a TV star, but her footage was edited out. I don't think the celebrity would have gone to her head, though.
