Diversity is Our Strength [Joe Mannix]

It's a common refrain and the rallying cry of the entire ruling class. It is said with passionate sincerity by Leftist rubes, with the smiling affability of a con man by the elites, with a sarcastic eye-roll by the based and with the dry-mouthed terror of a hostage filming a proof-of-life video by the masses. But what does it actually mean, and what is its basis?

There is a basis for the conclusion that diversity is our strength, and it is to reduce "idiosyncratic risk." This is a category of risk to which you are exposed when you have homogeneity. This is usually used as an investment term, so use that as an example. Suppose you're invested entirely in oil. Now suppose there's a unique risk to oil - for example, the government puts a 50% tax on all things oil to tackle climate change. Now you're screwed. You have nothing that isn't oil and your exposure to the heretofore unknown risk is total.

How do you manage idiosyncratic risk? Diversity. Be in multiple asset classes. Grow various different kinds of crops. Have multiple kinds of people in your organization. This is a big reason why big companies bring in outsiders for some of their executive positions: to get experience and methods from other places to avoid being killed by their own institutional blindness. Diversity brings its own problems, too. It can be bad for efficiency, it can cause friction and tension within the ranks, it can increase stress in an organization, etc. As with all things, balance is fairly important.

But this is not what "diversity is our strength" means when it is uttered as a holy phrase by the Left. Where diversity really counts - as a risk-management concept - the Left-type of "diversity" is wildly ineffective. It is only superficial diversity. It doesn't matter if 25% of your workforce is black and 15% is trans if everyone thinks the same things. That is not diversity of thought, opinion, method, approach, ambition, etc. The "diversity is our strength" crowd is remarkably non-diverse where it counts: ideas.

This is a reason that places with a political monoculture have bad outcomes. It doesn't matter that there are plenty of minorities in Californian government, because everybody walks the same path and has the same goals and the same perspectives. The system becomes brittle, fragile and unable even to effectively frame questions. To borrow from Rumsfeld, the number of "unknown unknowns" accumulate rapidly in the absence of diversity, because to know them requires knowledge that does not exist in the monoculture.

In a very real sense, diversity is our strength - but "diversity" doesn't mean what the high priests of the diversity cult say it means. That priesthood has but one definition of diversity: the superficial one. Diversity of thought and ideas is not a strength to them, it is oppression and supremacism. To the priesthood, actual diversity is their enemy and only perfect conformity is acceptable.

The term comes from the old days of printing, where a certain combination of letters would be used so often that the combo was cast as a solid (hence, "stereo" "type") block to be used easily over and over again.

24 Thirty years ago I was on a Corporate Diversity Team for Texas Instruments. Back then, it wasn't about skin color, it was exactly what you said, it was about intellectual diversity. That is so important, especially in engineering and design. Groupthink rarely produces technological breakthroughs.

So sad to see how it has been bastardized over the years. Glad I am retired.

Often people hire people like themselves - because we think we are pretty good or successful, so someone else just like me is going to be awesome. But like the idiosyncratic risk, it tends to reinforce strengths AND reinforce weaknesses.

America is supposed to be dedicated to preserving the God-given Rights of the people who live here. And somehow we got off the ground despite a third of those people preferring the structure of the crown, and another third who didn't want to be bothered.

Today we let everyone vote, and you've got camps who want to rule other people, who want to be ruled so they don't have to make decisions, who don't care about anything so long as they get their handout, who hate the style of government we had because sometimes they're not in power, who want cheap stuff from overseas and cheap off the books labor here, and who want to be protected from all consequences of their choices.

That diversity of goals is unmanageable. Someone (a lot of someones, actually) is simply going to have to lose.

And there, I think I would disagree with you. There are many monolithic cultures. The monolithic cultures outnumber the diverse ones, and nonetheless most of them never got there. Rule of law? Property rights? How do those correlate with that one particular factor? They don't. Vietnam is a monolithic culture and it isn't a paragon of legal rectitude or rights. North Korea is entirely monolithic and has no virtues whatsoever. Russia is somewhat monolithic and never achieved all that much given its resources, either.

Earlier I posted to the effect that you need a well behaved culture that is uniform. The problem with far east cultures is that they are all collectivist and tend to not value individual rights.

Having a uniform culture doesn't make for a great nation if the culture doesn't have the right values, but it is impossible to have good values if you have a great diversity of values.

It is hard to keep straight. As far as indoors, I remember when they said it was ok to go inside as long as you were vaxxed (I am not), but they weren't checking passports or anything so I went without a mask. Then just a few short weeks later, up goes all of the signs on businesses requiring masks upon entry regardless of vax status. And back with the tables of masks and bottles of disinfectant , with one person scrutinizing for your compliance. I am not even sure where to go to check for the updates.

My sister in law has a brother whose wife needs a kidney transplant. She is on the transplant list now. But recently has decided that she will NOT have the procedure unless 100% guaranteed that the donor did NOT have the covid vaccine.

The dolt is seriously risking death over this shit. Now I understand having some reservations about the vaccine. I haven't been jabbed and I won't be. But would I trade my life to avoid it? Doubt it. She will die without a transplant. She has two kids one boy and one teen girl. Her husband is beside himself. But only her feels matter I guess.

When I got sick, I made a promise to my kids that I was gonna do my damndest to be here til I'm 102, b/c my #1 job on Earth is to be here for my family. The problem is - she will NOT find any donor who has not had the vaccine. A good friend of mine works at the ICU of one of the 2 largest hospitals in SoCal. Specializes in Liver transplants. They will not accept any donor who hasn't been vaccinated, nor will they give any organs to somebody who hasn't been vaccinated. They've pulled people off of the waiting list.

I've had plenty of "discussions" regarding this with him and a surgeon friend. They're believers - but more to the point the hospital will lose funding were they to try operating on a non vaccinated person. They consider it a risk, and they'll only give organs to those with the lowest risk factor - even if the fuck is a 50 year old chain smoking alcoholic and the non-vaxxed is a clean 20 year old. That government redistribution of our money is too powerful.

So basically, she's committing suicide. I'd also assume if she hasn't been fully "vaxxed" that will become an issue - regardless of which state she's in.
