FaceBook Loses Active Users For the First Time In History

Here's a white-pill moment.

Facebook's growth in users -- a near constant since the company created its viral social network in 2004 -- is slowing.

Daily active users dropped from 1.93 billion to 1.92 billion, with the drop coming from Africa and Latin America. Facebook's growth has long been stagnant in the U.S. and Europe, but previously made up for it by consistently adding users all over the world. These new numbers suggest that Facebook is becoming saturated all over the world as well -- a potentially worrisome trend and one that shows another reason the company is pushing so hard into new arenas such as hardware.

Right, they've gone as far as they can go with their stupid Likes and Walls model which is why they're pushing the truly dystopian idea of people living their lives in the "Metaverse."

The news about their user base stagnating set off a major sell-off for FaceBook's parent company, the stupidly-named, idiotically-conceived "Meta." It lost a quarter of it's value, around $230 billion.

Shares of the social media giant were down more than 26% Thursday, the first day of trading after Meta reported a decline in profit and users during the last three months of 2021 -- and most tellingly, forecast revenue declines in the current quarter.

Meta's market value fell more than $230 billion to a market capitalization of about $661 billion. The company's market cap had been $898.5 billion early Thursday.

Zuckerberg lost some money. But not enough.

Facebook co-founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally lost nearly $32 billion Zuckerberg is the largest individual Meta shareholder, with more than 374.8 million shares, or about 12.5% of total shares outstanding, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Zuckerberg's shares had been valued at $121 billion before the market opened Thursday. When the markets closed, his holdings were worth $89.1 billion.

Here's an ad for FaceBook's new "virtual world, "Horizon." They say they want you to "try new things" -- new things, like sitting at home on the computer all fucking day long.

You know, "new things" like that.

Go out there and really explore, baby. Live life to the full.

What a bunch of absolute jive turkeys.

I have about three drops of hope left for humanity and I hope that humans are not stupid enough to sign up for "Horizon" with the promise that they'll see a "world in 3D."

Like the world available for free without the need for a subscription or optical device.

BTW, I'm not knocking a 3D virtual game. I'd like to play one some day. I'm knocking the idea of creating Ready Player One virtual world alternative to the real one for the general consumer.

I can't believe they're selling the idea of pursuing hobbies like painting in the virtual world.

Excuse me -- I speak Jive Turkey.

FML.

So this is for people who've always dreamed of... becoming a computer avatar?

But Ryan Long says that rich people are investing money in "virtual property" in the "metaverse," and other people are following their lead.

The below video, for example, says Snoop Dogg bought some virtual property, and his fans are buying up "lots" nearby to be "virtual neighbors."

Goodness I hope they all lose their money.

I know I'm spreading FUD (Fear Uncertainty Doubt), but all the markets for all these investments in piles of pixels can't all persist, can they?*

* I specifically do not mean whatever blockchain-type electronic investment you have your money in. That's a solid investment. I mean the other ones.

We should come up with one of these scams, I mean, nontraditional electronic stores of value. We can really fleece those jive turkeys.

no but seriously I only understand NFTs on the most superficial level possible and don't even really think of them as real, if you know what I mean. So this is for people who've always dreamed of... becoming a computer avatar?
But Ryan Long says that rich people are investing money in "virtual property" in the "metaverse," and other people are following their lead.

++++
It's for them, yes, but they are only a tiny fraction of the population. These people are not the core target market. The core target market is two kinds of people:
1. Office drones. Something like "make virtual meetings better with the Metaverse instead of just old, nasty Zoom." This group is not big enough to carry the business, either, even if it works.
2. People pushed into it by the resetters. The "Metaverse" - or something like it - is essential to those schemes. Live in your 350 sq. ft. efficiency apartment (your pod), eat your protein pack based on bugs, order in your goods from the outside, lease everything in your pod, pay for it with your UBI and welfare benefits, have nothing, and escape your miserable ersatz life as a valueless drone by building a virtual world in the Metaverse that allows you to fool yourself into pretending that your life sucks a lot less than it does.

That second group is the *real* target market.

105 Zuckerberg should have taken a hard look at what people want out of a truly virtual sandbox user driven interactive world, by well, looking at the one that does exist that lives mostly off of user generated content.
EVE Online.

What makes a game that is fundamentally boring by mechanics with very little developer content interesting such that at any given time thousands are playing it? How do people's RW personalities change in EVE? How does their RW actions and habits change when they play EVE. Anyone whose actually played knows the answers to these questions. And they speak to one reality Facebook will have to deal with.

The users will use the virtual world to act out their fantasies and darker desires they can't indulge in the real world. It will devolve into a sh*t show. And if you don't let it, it will be so boring no one will want to use it.

122 Right, they've gone as far as they can go with their stupid Likes and Walls model which is why they're pushing the truly dystopian idea of people living their lives in the "Metaverse."
-------
It is dystopian. And it's scary, when you think about the progression.

I believe the overall concept these guys have for the Year-Zero Great Reset, is to eventually create a neo-serfdom. Automate as much as humanly possible, with their political and plutocrat nobility sitting at the commanding heights of society, above a larger class of technologically savvy bourgeoisie, battling each other for power and wealth in a Great Game for Great People. All while the broad mass of the peasantry is shoveled into the Metaverse pods and subsisting on Soylent.

Now, this is insane and unworkable in any number of ways. But I do believe its their madhouse concept of the future. Problem is, in actual feudalism, the peasantry served a purpose. It's why the nobles were so reluctant to use them in wars - they needed them alive.

In this construct, they're just Soylent sinks. The day would come when the solons ask themselves "why the pods? Why the soylent? Just dispense with them."

Facebook is largely a datamining and advertising firm with the freebies out front for the people using it to ignore the fact that each 'client' is worth about $150 or so. But, like Enron, its 'assets' are mainly virtual and its existence depends on being 'the spot' for its sheep to be shorn. If an alternative exists that becomes popular, then a bandwagon effect causes a more rapid collapse in values than something like a brick and mortar manufacturer. One factor is that the datastream must be constantly refreshed from the 'clients' or it goes stale and useless. Another is that people buying advertising services are affected by the bandwagon effect. The third is that a lot of investment is tied to growth rates--when that stops--the hot money goes elsewhere to invest. Thus, the price to earnings ratio drops to normal levels affecting share price.

Well the point is more that Zuckerberg owns X shares of Facebook, and the "loss" is just gyrations in the valuation.

Exxon has seen an $150B shift in market valuation over the last couple years, it's the same oil and equipment.

Typically the current value of a thing is assumed to be based on what people expect future income from it to be like. Future expectations of income tend to be informed by present income. So even though in the long run the good and bad years kind of average out, you see huge valuation swings.

No indeed, they were now valued by "relationships" with other tech companies, global communications and other nebulous concepts. At least this "method" of valuation seemed nebulous, speculative, and far fetched to little old me.

Not everything went so well.

179 132 O/T 'Rona tastes update

Interestingly, the flavor-offness (I have a sense of taste, it's just that everything tastes *wrong*) has some set parameters. Sour or tart things or acidic things taste like poison. My morning tomato juice was awful. Lemon-flavored seltzer was terrible. Bland and neutral things aren't awful, but taste wrong. I had some humus and bread and it wasn't good. Spicy, though, is tolerable. It still ain't right, but spicy stuff is the most palatable. My guts will rebel, but so be it.

Just get all of your family's emails and do a weekly (okay, mine tends to be twice a month) update. You'll find out if you set up the group email, folks will use it b/c the work is done. You've just done what Facebook does for you. And you get pics and keep up.

I have 5 siblings...they all managed my move off Facebook, and we added a monthly Zoom call to see each other in person for those who wanted more "face time" than email could provide...once a month for 2 hours max isn't much for an introvert...

That occurs for the same reason motion sickness always occurs. Difference in middle ear balance and visual balance inputs. The solution has always been to dampen middle ear inputs. That's how medications like Meclizine work. First people will take meclizine to avoid motion sickness before they realize they can just surgically permanently deaden their inner ear and never suffer from motion sickness again, which they will start doing. 247 I've got a Quest, Facebook's VR headset. And it's cool. However...

All it does is show you things and let you listen to things. Anyone who forgets that is setting themselves up for trouble. There's no tactile feedback. You can see and talk to people, but you can't exchange handshakes or a hug. It's not a stand-in for interacting in meatspace, which we all need to do for our physical well-being.

If you keep those limitations in mind, then it's pretty cool. And there are things I enjoy doing with it. And a lot more can be done with it, I suspect. It would be neat to see a museum load up a tour that allowed you to walk through it's galleries and see displays from different angles. Architects and designers can design products in full 3-D, and show them off up-close.

But I don't pretend it's a stand-in for real-life socializing.

Also, there's an issue with motion-sickness. You can build up a tolerance over time and practice. But your body knows that the movement your eyes have convinced you is happening isn't actually taking place. This creates a disconnect between your conscious and subconscious, and the result early on is motion-sickness.

252 172 I remember reading circa early 2000s (IIRC) in none other than Forbes Magazine that large computer/tech type companies were no longer to be valued by using outdated metrics like actual earnings.

No indeed, they were now valued by "relationships" with other tech companies, global communications and other nebulous concepts. At least this "method" of valuation seemed nebulous, speculative, and far fetched to little old me.

Not everything went so well.

Already, google's algorithms are giving shittier search results and google's repeated attempts to monetize bought companies ends up simply datamining their customers as the value like youtube. Google values each 'client' at about 180 per person on average to datamine and advertise. Now, what happens if someone offers a better search engine.

----

You're fine so long as your movement in-session matches what your body is doing. So if I stand in one spot swinging light swords at colored cubes while music plays, I'm fine. If I run around my ship firing my blaster at space pirates, motion sickness will become an issue. A lot of games have the player teleport to move, which apparently reduces the problem somewhat.

Google's search sucks now, except for purely technical searches and their automated plug-ins (like putting in "1 USD in rubles" and getting a result). Outside of purely technical searches - where they are still the best, though by narrower margins - they are now an inferior search engine.

DuckDuckGo is okay, but not great. I have had the best luck with Qwant. Qwant is from Euroland (France) and actually returns really solid results most of the time. My experience with it is very good. People are too busy worrying and protecting themselves and try to maintain a job. Or, of course the spam-likes robots are dysfunctioning.

The become a painter thing fits right in with what we have been seeing for a while now. Kids and adults think they are smart and talented because they can hit a button. They have been living in a fake world for a while now. They get a star for not participating. They watch themselves gain followers and likes among thousands of "viewers" (not friends) without producing anything of importance or beauty.

The world is getting so ugly and fake for all of the newer generations. We were sold that it would be cool to be in a virtual world. They are trying to make this permanent. A permanent game chair in everyone's home with periodic forced injections. You will kneel. You will comply. Like Tucker always used to say (don't watch news on the tv anymore) - "Shut up and obey!" FB was a hit because it was an instantaneous way for people to connect across distances. It was a way to easily share life's experiences with friends. Sure, FB will use some of my data to help advertisers target their product. No worries.

But then, you couldn't browse a thing without ads -- Big Brother-like -- stalking you across multiple platforms. You couldn't use an app without sharing every bit of personal info with FB data drones. Then came the pandemic and the "What are you doing, Dave" messages began popping up if you shared an unauthorized opinion. And let's not forget the $billions that Zucker made being seen as carte-blanche to start manipulating elections with ZuckBucks.

Screw em. Hope it all goes the way of AOL.

FB was also hugely important locally in its initial market: universities. When Facebook came to campus (my big school in 2004, which was part of the wider beta and my smaller school after I transferred, when it went general availability to .EDU E-Mail addresses), the non-Facebook venues all vanished almost immediately. If you wanted to learn where a party was, or what was going on, or anything else, you were on FB or you didn't know. The student union bulletin board became pointless, as did E-Mail and even phones to a lesser degree.

Snoop Dogg was and remains a marketing creation. Every good rap he ever had was written and produced by Dr. Dre. Everything he did on his own after their collaboration is unlistenable. Much like Eminem, who had the exact same trajectory.

Dr. Dre was very good at laying down rap beats and writing lyrics, but recognized that he had enough of them for many "artists." He would just pick out a face he knew he could sell, flog them til the money stopped flying out of them, and move on. That's how you get to be fantastically wealthy in the music biz (which he was even before that $3b deal with Apple).

I have also found that Amazon's search engines are increasingly craptastic and pushing unrelated items, crap sponsored items, and generally making it more difficult to find what I want. If Walmart did not have its head up its ass, they could hit Amazon pretty hard in online sales but their search engine is even worse than Amazons.

Over a billion dollars was spent in 2020 by a secretive liberal dark money juggernaut to help Biden win the White House, win the US Senate, and keep the US House of Representatives.
The group Arabella Advisors, may not be a familiar name to you, but chances are they fund one or more liberal causes you are familiar with. Now, they are targeting the Supreme Court in their efforts.
Founded in 2005 by former Clinton administration official Eric Kessler, Arabella is comprised of five nonprofit organizations: the Sixteen Thirty Fund, the Windward Fund, the New Venture Fund, the Hopewell Fund, and the North Fund. While they all operate under the Arabella umbrella, they address different policy issues.
Bill and Melinda Gates, Pierre Omidyar, and Hansjorg Wyss are among the billionaires behind Arabella, which provides funding to hundreds of stand-alone nonprofits across the country, as well as promotes leftist groups they found and control.

I mean well you could if you wanted to. Create a whole bunch of offline wallets whose keys were recorded on paper and paper only then transfer like 0.00001 Bitcoin to each. Then each one would be effectively paper money. It's a lot of work just to have paper to throw around.

Fiat money is little different in that the vast majority has no physical representation ever such as a dollar bill and it's entire existence is just a relevant ledger entry in a financial institution. That's fundamentally the same as Bitcoin.

https://bit.ly/3oq4q5l

The officer did nothing wrong. He went in with his team, they announced who they were immediately after entry (they apparently had a signed no knock warrant), they encounter a sleeping man who woke up and raised a gun at officers.

The grievous and unconscionable errors weren't the fault of the officer. Bad intel, a bad warrant, and the bad practice of a no knock warrant aren't his fault, they're the fault of the state that's now serving the officer up on a platter to the mob.

471 The world is getting so ugly and fake for all of the newer generations. We were sold that it would be cool to be in a virtual world. They are trying to make this permanent. A permanent game chair in everyone's home with periodic forced injections. You will kneel. You will comply. Like Tucker always used to say (don't watch news on the tv anymore) - "Shut up and obey!" He was right. That is exactly what they want. Posted by: artisanal ette

No trend goes on forever--the trees never grow enough to reach the heavens, and so on. The old roots of glamour's meaning is appropriate. If you think of the techlords' primary power as illusions (maybe because they are Stan's apprentices), they have little power when you see through their packaged lies about reality like a revealing a magician's trick.

They are still bound by that old rule of marketing that one dissatisfied person affects the attitudes of about ten others or so. Networking effects are like leverage in finances--great when going up, disastrous when going the other way.

474 Arabella has been influencing nearly every piece of national policy in Washington, DC, in the past 15 years, with activists moving easily from its groups into government positions. There is almost no agency without senior officials connected to Arabella, from the Justice Department to the Department of Energy.
Demand Justice, one of these groups, was begun by the Sixteen Thirty Fund. $5 million in advertising paid for by this dark-money group attempted to thwart the nomination of Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018. The group will now use this money to influence President Biden.
In the aftermath of President Biden's election, Demand Justice began harassing Justice Stephen Breyer into retiring. They ran aggressive ads and made a mobile billboard outside the Supreme Court that said: "Breyer, retire. It's time for a Black woman Supreme Court justice. There's no time to waste."

We are a nation that respects the difference of opinions in the political discourse that shapes all of our lives. This extends to the halls of Congress where debate is the order of the day.
This is why I join my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and in both chambers of congress in decrying the partisan effort to censure two respected members of the House, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, both of whom have served with distinction.
That each has differing opinions than our former president is no reason to shun them and their contributions to our democracy.
It is unseemley and sends the wrong message to our adversaries in this time of international crisis.

This is hugely problematic, and Meta is going to have to be better to arrest this change. With the major usage declines coming from territories populated largely by black and brown bodies, it is clear that the disparate impact in subscription levels and service attendance is due to systemic racism within the platform.

Facebook/Meta needs to affirmatively and actively address these disequities in their service offerings and platforms. Their spaces need to be made safe for the occupation by black and brown bodies and the platform needs to be made relevant to their interests in order to purge the obvious problems of white supremacy. If it weren't for systemic oppression within Meta, the white and white-adjacent populations would not continue to dominate Meta/Facebook spaces at the expense of oppressed populations of color.

Not really. Read modern money mechanics. It's published by the fed and at least since I last read it was refreshingly pretty honest about how fiat money works. I'm required by law to accept Dollars as payment along with anything else I'd like. Nothing prevents me from making my dollar price so high (in relevance to Bitcoin or what I'd rather transact in) that it's worth your while to pay in Bitcoin. The dollar survives only because most people don't have a good substitute that's actually better and no desire to push people to use bitcoin in that doing so could cost sales. Dollars are held up solely by the confidence and good will of the people and that's it.

583 Thank you all.
I knew the Moron family would be there for me.
I've been longing to go back home to the Southlands for some time. But this is not at all how I hoped to do that.
This was so completely unexpected and the family is absolutely unaware of any reason for his choice to end it this way.
All that I can say to any who will listen:
It isn't enough to be sensitive to signs of our loved one's emotional duress for too often they are masters at concealment. Especially if they have assumed positions of pride such as protector or provider.
Encourage those around you to let down their guard and be humble to each other and to God by modeling that behavior for all to follow. Show grace by asking for it yourself.
If we stand too tall on our parapets we will only look down at the world which can lead to feeling alone and vulnerable.
It is from a position of humility that our eyes are naturally turned upwards to God and we are best positioned to receive his grace as well as our own and from those around us.

That is all I have.
It is and will always be enough for me.

587 "Meta," in the FB pop-culture sense means not real, living in a world made up of ironic self-reference and references to fiction.

Naming FB "Meta" is Kinsley gaffe: when a politicized actor with an agenda independent of the truth accidentally says something true that reveals their own dishonesty.

FB is a fake censored world where people hide from reality and truth.
