  • Memory leaks: The forgotten side of web performance. (Read the Tea Leaves)

Somebody needs to wrap this around a brick and toss it through the window of the YouTube web client team. Try watching a busy Hololive livestream on a computer with less than 32GB of RAM to find out why.

  • Americans lost $770 million to social media scams in 2021. (Bleeping Computer)

That's about a tenth of blockchain fraud or civil asset forfeiture, never mind the real wealth killers like inflation and government waste.

The FTC shared useful tips on how to avoid getting scammed on social media:
    Stay off social media.
    Thanks. Helpful.

  • PCs are back again. But for how long? (ZDNet)

For as long as people actually need to get work done, you latte-swilling weenie.

  • Went ahead and got a PinePhone to break free of the Apple/Google diarchy? Wondering what operating system to run on it? Here's an easy way to test the 15 current options. (Liliputing)

That's quite a difference from Apple, or even from Android, where if you are really determined you often can install some alternative OS that is only fully functional on hardware that you can no longer buy.

  • Ohio promised Intel $2 billion in incentives to attract the $20 billion chip factories recently announced. (AP)

A combination of new infrastructure (roads and water supply upgrades), tax breaks, and some sort of rebate to defray the relative expense of local construction against, um, places Intel had no intention of building a fab anyway.

Still, of all the ways governments find to waste our money, this is one of the least destructive.

12 Mornin', all,

Up early to work out. It will get chilly again later this week, so I'd better get in some road time while I can.

Chekov is not doing well, I think. He is more lethargic this morning; I'm not sure he's moved much since I went to bed, and does not seem to have eaten much of what I put down for his dinner last night. He was okay (for him, nowadays) this weekend, or I'd have brought him in to be looked over. I guess I need to take a vacation or work-from-home day and run him to the vet.

Building overpriced underused infrastructure is one of the least harmful byproducts of big government. If it keeps them occupied so they stop screwing everything else up, I say let them get on with it.

Indeed. Though right now our 13 yo cat Buttersctoch seems fine, wants to sleep on me, this morning I woke up and no idea she was there.

We are worried about Bailey, 11 yo lab, they don't have th longest lifespans. She's bee puking a lot, hope it's just the cat food she steals, but her digestion seems dicey.

Bought some expensive crap, but she even threw up some of that. A few more days and we might have to go back to the vet.

True. But he is usually more alert when I get up, and overall is better in the mornings, like me. He responds when I stroke and talk to him, he's not in a coma. But I'm worried that he has not eaten to speak of and is not showing interest in food now.

I don't mind saying: I'm worn out with all this. I know it's worse for him. But the constant stress of worrying about him since September is wearying, to say the least. I'm . . . just tired. Right now I can't do much; the vet doesn't open until 7, and they are located a half hour's drive from me.

Cats can indeed. They show it differently, perhaps. Arizona the giant red tabby, my buddy and roommate for 16 years, was not a gushy sort of cat; but Miss Linda swears that he went off his feed and got sick missing me when I moved to Denver and left him with her temporarily until I got settled. He, and all my cats, always greeted me at the door even if it was not feeding time, slept on the bed with me, and spent more time in the living room with me than off on their own.

Depending on the ivermectin used. Was it the prescription pills, the 1% injectable that you don't as a human actually inject, the injectable with added ingredients for liver flukes that you are not supposed to use at all, or the horse paste which has a dosage for humans that is searchable on the intertoobs.

I was reading an article that someone here linked yesterday, which had a typo in the very first sentence - "now" vs "know" - but was otherwise well written. The author was taking the point of view that the long term effect of the "vaccine" is going to cause the early death of a billion people. He then takes that premise and explores the societal changes when Doctors, nurses, firemen, police, truckers, etc... almost all are gone.

It was an interesting read for a little while, but ultimately depressing.

He then sleeps on the arm of the couch if I am there because I woke up. Finally when FenSpouse and I are having morning prayer time he sits on FenSpouse's lap until spouse has to go drive the bus.

Like elderly humans, nutritional needs change, and they will let you know if they are unhappy. Otherwise, they are fine, if a little slow and inattentive.

Old Cat and Old Dog are only 14, but in better shape than New Old Dog (estimating 11-12yo), after some very worrisome episodes. They are all on borrowed time, but as long as they are having fun, I'll let them be.

142 I mentioned this in the overnight thread, but missed the obvious connection. The mainstream media is pushing the following as the BIGGEST story of the weekend:

A Tennessee school board has removed Art Spiegelman's comic book memoir about his father's survival of the Holocaust, Maus, from it's 8th grade curriculum.

I realized it was used to distract from and ignore the real news. I should have seen the angle, "This is what you get the students' parents get involved in deciding school policy."

Also, "Tennessee, home of the Scopes Trial!!!!! Fundamentalist Yahoos Fascists!!!!"
