Meet the Dog Walker Who Runs the r/anti-work Reddit Forum Who Wants to Hang It All Up and Retire From Dog Walking

Oh, Doreen is of a different "gender" than the one he was assigned at birth.

A 30-year-old dog walker who advocates for the 'anti-work movement' went viral following her car-crash interview with Fox News host Jesse Watters after she called laziness a 'virtue' and said she aspired to move on from dog walking to teaching philosophy.

Doreen Ford, of Boston, who serves as a moderator for the r/Anti-Work subreddit message board, fumbled to explain the group's ideology as Watters mocked the movement and its 1.7 million followers.

'It sounds like maybe people are just being lazy,' Watters says during the Tuesday interview. 'Are you encouraging people to be lazy?'

To which Ford responded: 'I think laziness is a virtue in a society where people constantly want you to be productive 24/7, and it's good to have rest.

'That doesn't mean you should be resting all the time or not putting effort into the things that you care about.'

The subreddit gained followers in 2020 when the pandemic began but erupted in popularity in 2021 as users posted text and e-mail screenshots of them quitting their jobs to pursue their passions.

It also gained backlash as it was blamed for fueling the Great Resignation, when roughly 33 million Americans quit their job since the spring of 2021.

Aside from dog walking and moderating on Reddit, Ford, who quit a retail job five years ago, also runs the AbolishWork.com website, where she spreads the philosophy of Bob Black, an American anarchist who advocated for the abolition of work.

She also has a Patreon page where she hopes to get enough followers to run an 'anti-work podcast.'

Asked how much he thinks people should work in a week, "Doreen" said he works 20-25 hours per week, which he deemed "a good amount."

He said he'd like to retire from the rat-race of dog-walking to become a... professor of philosophy. "Critical thinking, reason, stuff like that."

Maybe life-coaching, Doreen!

The link has a lot of quotes and links to this r/anti-work reddit. A lot of precious puppies who think that they're so special that people should pay them to climb mountains and think about Nature and stuff, man.

This interview went so bad for "Doreen" that he was removed as an editor of the forum.

ShortFatOtaku had a bit of backstory about the forum. He said the forum was, for a long while, just a forum for people to post their Boss from Hell stories in, and their Victory Resignation emails in. He says that communists then saw the forum as an opportunity to use it for purposes of anti-capitalist agitation, and took it over to turn it into a propaganda forum.

ShortFatOtaku makes that point that quitting a job is part of liberal capitalism, not part of communism -- just a boss disciplines workers with the threat of firing if they don't produce, a worker can check an unreasonable boss with the threat of quitting. (Or, in both cases: the act of firing or quitting.)

But the communists took over the forum to turn quitting into a revolutionary anti-capitalist act.

15 This "gender assigned at birth" bulls**t. You weren't "assigned" anything; the doctors made an observation based on biological fact. (Yes, I know there are intersex cases out there, but those are called abnormalities for a reason.) If you don't like being a male or female and want to pretend to be something different, it's a free country; but don't pretend you never were a male or a female to begin with.

"I don't work because work is miserable and unfair and unnecessary and work is just a scheme to make you unhappy and is total bullshit" is a whole 'nother thing.

37 I've always said work is how God "works" through us. I don't just mean a job, but our work, and our works. He can use our work to make things happen without us even knowing it.

Not remotely surprising that the satanic commie left would take up the "anti-work" mantle.

And it's not just me. There's also that old saw about "idle hands" and "workshops". I mean it's all there to be seen for those who care to look.

Posted by: ... at January 31, 2022 04:37 PM (dscaa)

38 Doreen will be quite surprised at the end result, should everyone stop working.

What Doreen is after is other people working harder so she doesn't have to work. However, she has to convince other people to work harder, which, frankly sounds like work, in and of itself.

My modest suggestion is that Doreen give up work all together, lay in bed, and not put forth any effort to do anything for, say, a week? That should be long enough to solve all of her problems.

I may have mentioned this before, but one of the subreddits that featured original fiction stories included a piece about a guy whose grandmother had come from a parallel universe where Stalin had conquered the whole world, and left him designs for a machine that would open a door between the two universes so that the Red Army could march in and conquer our world as well.

It was pretty well done, and he wrote it more as a horror story than anything, but man oh man, that comments section. "Good luck dude!" "Hey, don't be so quick to judge your grandma." "Can we get started on this right away, please?" Etc. Pretty d*mn terrifying.

What's hilarious is that, while using 1000s more words and in a more educated style, this is all Marx ever said. He didn't want to have to do what he didn't want to do, and tried to come up with a grand scheme by which he could have that.

161 Serious question, all these people supposedly quitting their jobs, how the hell do they get money?
Can people get welfare if they don't have children?
Are they all mentally unwell and getting disability?

I feel just like I did during the housing boom trying to figure out how my nail girl bought a house for 850,000 with no money down or some crazy thing. My husband had to explain what was going on.

Posted by: CaliGirl at January 31, 2022 04:50 PM (oeVy+)

162 This is, simply, another course of "they don't believe anything they say they do". Of course communists know that you need plumbers dealing with human waste, and concrete workers, garbage men, etc. of course they know there is a *huge* amount of generally undesirable work out there that *has* to get done to support society. And they wholly support getting it done. By forcing people to do it. Not them though, they are the jntelligencia, whom is above all that menial labor.

This "anti-work" movement is another part of the clowned-pimento strategy to create crisis within the market based economy to foment the communist revolution. Which they stupidly think they will A survive, B be actually allowed to do these stupid things they say. When most people whom aren't part of the upper echelon will either be shot as an unneeded revolutionary, or sent to work in the gulag, or forced to work in the menial tasks for which they are qualified, the latter of which is there best outcome.

207 > Gun Reddit is vastly inferior to gun morons here.

This is true. There are many beliefs held by significant numbers of gun Redditors that are ridiculous.

Example: Common belief is that Republicans are just as bad on guns as Democrats.

Also: If anything goes down and you're not directly involved, you should just get the hell out.

Under most circumstances this is probably good advice, but if I'm ever near an active shooter and I'm not with family, you'd better believe I'm going to try to take out the shooter. Gun Reddit says I'm a moron for this.

Gun Reddit also believes .45 is an old man cartridge and 9mm is better in every way. Not to start a cartridge war, but I believe bigger holes let blood out faster and therefore make perps stop functioning faster. Of course, if you can get a perfect shot, this isn't as important, but who shoots perfectly in an emergency?

IMO the mods who take on a subreddit really have no business doing so. They've no idea the amount of work required to keep it from devolving into a complete shit show. Which r/anitwork has become. It's a joke on Reddit... which says a lot.

Geez. This guy sounds exactly like one of my nephews, right down to the gender assignment shit (nephew has just decided that he won't answer to his birth name, just the goofy girl name he gave himself).
21 yrs old, just quit his second job (McDs), manipulative and borderline suicidal. His big ambition in life is apparently to sit in front of his computer 24/7 and have his parents feed him, give him free money when he needs it and upgrade his gaming computer annually.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that he's a member of this Reddit. I was driving him home a few weeks ago and he started talking about the evils of "go go capitalist culture". He didn't like it when I unexpectedly countered with a pseudo-Marxist argument for capitalism based on class struggle and social mobility.

I'm torn between my love for my nephew, and my stabby stabby rage at his teachers and internet friends who talked him into thinking he's an atheist commie trans butterfly. Not because they care about him, but because they got off on having a "project". Fuckers.

I worked exactly one retail job. It was a sporting goods store. I was in my late teens. 95% of my job was standing around, waiting for someone to show up, and telling them where the bathroom was. It wasn't terrible, but I decided it wasn't for me.

I was a janitor in college. I had more fun doing that than my retail job.

264 Work is a strange thing, when you're doing it you can hate it. But when you're not working, it's depressing.

I have the ability right now for a comfortable, early retirement after an exit from something but I have a new new gig. When I was in between things, I was so depressed and felt worthless.

A lot of these jobs were made for teenagers, but teenagers don't seem to work anymore.

I remember in like the 80's and 90's, it was some pimply teenager working at a McDonalds. I don't think I've seen that in like 15 years. Now its some 35 year old illegal alien. So of course they demand career type pay, which means the model doesn't work.

You need a kid that's excited he made $200 for the week so you can sell a $5 value meal. It also probably also taught them far more about finances and the real world then whatever they got at school.

Actually, that's a true story right there. The company (now sold and a shell of its former self) had invented an incredible product - and I was doing the packaging for it. The CEO was an absolute idiot. They were throwing away VC money like it was free (it was).

We were up against a deadline - I'd suggested some pretty cool stuff - which meant a lot of time at the bindery - die cutting on top of spot varnishes etc.

So the files are ready to get sent off, and the CEO wants some "minor" changes on specs etc. Somehow the meeting devolved into this idiot actually saying - TO ME RIGHT TO MY FACE - "green is not a color found in nature". Dead serious. He also didn't like my new logo that reflected their tech (didn't give credit to consumer) and the fuck stole it and had another firm do it - cheaper since it was "his idea" - Pro Tip: we all know each other. Damn, I hated those corporate shits.

Funny you mention that. I was just at one donating a bunch of my mom's clothing. Somehow I lost my sunglasses (expensive but not favorites by far). The lady friend I was with was asking a different employee about it who started giving her shit. It was obvious that besides having attitude and not understanding what we were asking, the dude had at best a room temperature IQ. Not Downs Syndrome, but definitely an unhappy Simple Jack character.

Conveyer at the exit of the baler. Basically pushes the bale of hay through the air into the awaiting hay wagon. They don't get stacked neatly, but you also aren't paying for additional help to pick up the bales.

It is a device that is towed behind and to the side of the hay wagon that scoops up the bale and raises it to the height of the bed, where the guy on the wagon can snag it at waist level and stack it.
Without that, you need a crew of three: two to pick up bales and toss them to the one stacker.

Nowadays they just use a New Holland stackwagon or a tow-behind stacker to do it automatically, it costs more for equipment but it it is much faster and you can stack the bales in the field for the big trucks with the big loader to haul it all off to the barns.

I manually threw bales onto trailers when I was young and had no other skills.

I'd say my Glock is probably my least favorite or useful, save for the fact that WTSHTF all the homies will have Glocks, so there'll be plenty of replacement parts and magazines (not to mention a metric shit-ton of 9mm ammo) to pick off of the cadavers.

I know we're making fun of this - but there was that article about the gal that got her face rearranged trying to keep a miniature dachshund in her care from being swiped. It's incredibly lucrative - especially in urban environments. And, these people will do whatever it takes to keep their fur baby safe and healthy.

Before I got divorced, I was seriously considering a doggy day care as a semi-retirement gig, and hiring local talent. In fact, that's an even better idea now that San Jose has absorbed the town. All these people still have to commute a couple of times a week - but now they're driving a lot further and gone a lot longer. Too bad the property belongs to the in-laws. I also considered a pet photography biz, with instant printing etc. Awfully glad I didn't throw $70-80k at that 3 years ago - I'd have the Newsom blues!

The thing with bourbon is there's so many different flavors it's sort of like trying to put all wine into a single category. A lot of varying opinions. I just tried a midrange one called Angel's Envy. Quite good, finished in port barrels. But when I went back to the Whistle Pig "Piggyback" 6 year old Rye, I preferred it by a wide margin. In fact, I might prefer that stuff over their 10 year old (and far pricier) Rye. Go fig.

538 After buying several .380 pistols and hating them, the G42 was shockingly easy to shoot for its size and weight.

Yea, the manufacturers are so scared of lawsuits that they give pocket pistols an insane trigger pull length and weight that is pretty much guaranteed to mean you have lousy accuracy.

The Glock though seems more like a conventional pistols while being only marginally larger. Like a 3/8" thicker.

If you can live with the drop in power it's arguably a better pocket pistol than the G43 in 9mm. Although I'm stuck carrying the 9's because the spouse laid claim to the .380.

Sadly, at some point you must think about doing the last favor for the cat that you love. I had to put down my cat a few years ago. She was dying of cancer and stopped eating. She had lost a lot of weight. It was the last favor I could do for my little friend, and not let her suffer.

With the subcompact revolution, started by the SIG 365, I'm glad I didn't buy a G43. I don't mind the G42 for summer or pocket carry. But I use ball ammo for the extra penetration, if needed.

546 Can confirm, 20 something marxist wannabes don't think anyone should have to "work", that we're all just suckers for putting up with "the man" getting paid peanuts for our labor.

How they imagine that the world will continue to provide all their worldly desires under socialist utopia when nobody "works", I'll never know.

547 On cats and dogs getting old, we've had 2 cats pass in the last couple years, and a dog that seemed on his way. The cats were 16 and 18, the dog is now 12 (?).

Amazingly, the oldest cat lived a couple extra years after we started changing the food we give them, as it seems her mouth couldn't handle the dry cat food they've eaten for a decade. The dog, same kinda thing, he was super lethargic, having trouble getting around and having diarrhea all the time. Vet suggested we make some food for a bit and we just kept doing it. Cheap cuts of meat, carrots, celery, rice and it's like he's gone back in time. As spry as he's been in a couple years, at least. Interested to see how he does next spring / summer, since this started just as the snow started to fly.
