Joni Mitchell has decided to remove all of her music from Spotify, joining Neil Young in protest of Joe Rogan’s podcast that Young says spreads misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccines (via The Wall Street Journal). “I STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH NEIL YOUNG AND THE GLOBAL SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL COMMUNITIES ON THIS ISSUE” Young attempts to save face. Neil Young, who recently chose to have his music removed from Spotify in protest of vaccine misinformation promoted by podcast host Joe Rogan, says his decision has nothing to do with censorship. “I support free speech,” Young wrote in a letter posted to his Neil Young Archives site. “I have never been in favor of censorship. Private companies have the right to choose what they profit from, just as I can choose not to have my music support a platform that disseminates harmful information. I am happy and proud to stand in solidarity with the front line health care workers who risk their lives every day to help others.” Funny how he thinks shooting up with some "mystery vaccine" is A. OK and his tirade against GMOs is cool. Nils Lofgren Pulls Music From Spotify in Solidarity With Neil Young And now it looks like Spotify is blinking. Spotify, responding to Joe Rogan controversy, will label podcasts that discuss COVID-19 On Sunday, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said the company will implement new measures to deal with COVID-19 misinformation. Ek says a content advisory warning will be placed on podcast episodes that discuss the virus. I guess old Neil and the rest of the Rogan haters won't have anything to do with John Hopkins University including its hospital. This study is well worth reading in its entirety, but the abstract states its conclusion clearly: This systematic review and meta-analysis are designed to determine whether there is empirical evidence to support the belief that “lockdowns” reduce COVID-19 mortality. Lockdowns are defined as the imposition of at least one compulsory, non-pharmaceutical intervention (NPI). NPIs are any government mandate that directly restrict peoples’ possibilities, such as policies that limit internal movement, close schools and businesses, and ban international travel. This study employed a systematic search and screening procedure in which 18,590 studies are identified that could potentially address the belief posed. After three levels of screening, 34 studies ultimately qualified. Of those 34 eligible studies, 24 qualified for inclusion in the meta-analysis. They were separated into three groups: lockdown stringency index studies, shelter-in-place-order (SIPO) studies, and specific NPI studies. An analysis of each of these three groups support the conclusion that lockdowns have had little to no effect on COVID-19 mortality. More specifically, stringency index studies find that lockdowns in Europe and the United States only reduced COVID-19 mortality by 0.2% on average. SIPOs were also ineffective, only reducing COVID-19 mortality by 2.9% on average. Specific NPI studies also find no broad-based evidence of noticeable effects on COVID-19 mortality. While this meta-analysis concludes that lockdowns have had little to no public health effects, they have imposed enormous economic and social costs where they have been adopted. In consequence, lockdown policies are ill-founded and should be rejected as a pandemic policy instrument.(Emphasis added) ACTOR Howard Hesseman has died, Saturday Night Live alum and close friend Laraine Newman revealed on Sunday. Robert Byrd aside, West Virginia has some interesting politicians. West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice told Bette Midler and critics to kiss his dog's 'heinie' and hoisted the bulldog during his State of the State address: video I've been pumping my own gas for as long as I can remember. Then again I do not reside in the State of Oregon. As it relates to the automotive industry, you may be curious to know what your elected officials are doing to earn their keep in New Jersey and Oregon. The answer, in part, is spending hours (days?weeks? years?) debating the dangers and merits of self-service gas stations. The last two holdouts in the country, both states have held firm to their ban on pumping your own gas for decades. In Oregon, an active movement is afoot to change that, driven by the current employee shortage businesses are struggling to overcome. A new bipartisan bill introduced by representatives Shelly Boshard Davis of Albany and Julie Fahey of Eugene, House Bill 4151, would require fuel stations to present a choice of self-service or full-service pumps. It also levies a penalty if the station doesn’t offer both options at the same price. And, as we’ve seen before, the idea is causing some folks a fair amount of consternation (and in some cases, a full-on freakout). If I buy a product, I should be able to take it any where I want to have it repaired. My product and I should not be held hostage by the manufacturer. In late 2020, Massachusetts lawmakers (with overwhelming public support) passed an expansion of the state’s “right to repair” law. The original law was the first in the nation to be passed in 2013. The update dramatically improved it, requiring that as of this year, all new telematics-equipped vehicles be accessible via a standardized, transparent platform that allows owners and third-party repair shops to access vehicle data via a mobile device. The goal: reduce repair monopolies, and make it cheaper and easier to get your vehicle repaired. Is old music killing new music? Old songs now represent 70 percent of the U.S. music market, according to the latest numbers from MRC Data, a music-analytics firm. Those who make a living from new music—especially that endangered species known as the working musician—should look at these figures with fear and trembling. But the news gets worse: The new-music market is actually shrinking. All the growth in the market is coming from old songs. Yup, let's hear it for new music. A drug suspect found with fentanyl and a bag of hypodermic needles told Florida police that he used the syringes “for fishing,” according to an arrest report. Police responding Saturday afternoon to a 911 call about a suspicious person encountered Eric Bennett, 30, on a Vero Beach street. An officer described Bennett (seen above) as “visibly intoxicated on an unknown substance.” Asked about large bulges in the pockets of his shorts--and whether he possessed any weapons--Bennett replied, “I have hypodermic needles for fishing.” He then removed “a plastic bag with syringes inside” from a pocket and placed the works on the hood of a squad car. Bennett also handed over a cigarette pack containing a baggie with fentanyl. “I don’t want to go to jail,” said Bennett, whose occupation is listed as landscaping in court records. Brotherly love. Apparently far UV can destroy viruses in the air, but the standard Mercury lights used are also a risk for cataracts and skin cancers.
It appears that there is studies on differing wavelenghts, specifically 222nm from Xenon lights, that both destroys corona virus and is not a cancer or cataract risk. Using them in schools and offices and stores, from tests, reduces transmission to zero without intimate contact. This tech indicates this and every following pandemic is over, if it is used. The politics of the Oregon ban on self-serve gas are interesting.
Most gas stations in Oregon are franchised and fairly small - since pumping gas is a labor-intensive activity in Oregon, there aren't really economies of scale to having a larger gas station. In other states with self-serve, it is efficient to have much larger stations, since the labor requirement isn't there, and these stations are frequently owned directly by the companies, not franchisees. So, it's the owners of existing gas stations in Oregon blocking self-serve, since they are afraid that their businesses would get competed out of existence. This is breaking down, in part, because Costco and Kroger have figured out how to build much larger gas stations that work like assembly lines, even without self-serve, and provide much cheaper gas. The smaller stations are likely to get competed out of existence anyway. Posted by: The ARC of History! at January 30, 2022 10:14 PM (I2/tG) 66

Spotify reported that it pays between $0.00331 and $0.00437 per stream. Artists make much less than a cent per play on Spotify. I doubt that Young or Mitchell will even notice the loss. Cheap virtue signaling with the emphasis on cheap.
Consider that Neil Young sold off a large chunk of his catalog for about $150 Million. If that's the music of his that was on Spotify, he's not feeling the loss at all. Let's see if I got this right. Some people in Oregon are opposed to having 1/4 of the pumps at gas stations be self-serve, because they don't want to pump their own gas. Somehow 3/4 full service pumps aren't enough to handle their gas-pumping needs? Or, since they don't want to pump their own gas, they think no one else should be allowed to?

In Oregon, Indian reservations have always ignored the no-self-serve law. They also made a change recently - Oregon is a big place, and most of it is insanely rural, so you have a lot of places selling gas from one or two pumps, that were only open eight hours a day, since it wasn't cost-effective to staff the pump more than that. Now, in specified rural counties, gas stations can be self-serve outside of normal business hours. Posted by: The ARC of History! at January 30, 2022 10:51 PM (I2/tG) 257

So, I finally have a working oil pressure gauge on the Jeep. I had replaced the sending unit a couple of days ago with one from Autozone. That one worked for the first 5 minutes, became intermittent, and then fully dead. I made up a test cable this morning, and subbed a 220 ohm resistor for the sending unit. Gauge registered 30 psi with the ignition on, so clearly the ECM "saw" the resistor, and could send digits coding 30 psi to the digital dash. So I go back to Autozone to see if they can replace the sending unit I bought. Out of stock, but East Mesa has one, about 3 miles away. Drive to East Mesa store, remove dead sending unit from engine, exchange for new one, install it. Dead, out of the box. Remove that one, install original (also dead). Get refund. Drive to O'Reilly's in AJ, buy a sending unit. Also bought a brass tee, flex line, and after-market mechanical gauge. continued...

So, I spend the rest of the day screwing the new sending unit into the brass tee, and the brass tee into the engine block, and running a flex line from dash/console area up to the tee on the back of the engine, and screwing the adaptor for the compression nut into the side branch of the tee, and then screwing the compression nut onto the adaptor, which was difficult, because cramped workspace, and hot engine. Then I took the guts out of the non-functional "driver's information center" with its nifty graphic of doors ajar, drilled a 2 and 1/8" hole in the cover and mounted the china-made mechanical gauge. Woo-Hoo! It all works. Electronic gauge reads 30 psi, China gauge reads 25 psi, but it's all good.

Look up "bone records". In the old USSR, some folks would make records out of used x-rays, because they couldn't get their hands on vinyl.
If you want to see an excellent musical, check out the Russian movie "Stilyagi" (Hipsters), which is about the Communist Party's attempts to shut down the jazz craze in Moscow in the 1950's. Great songs. One of the characters is a medical student, who is very popular because he could get used x-rays to make bone records out of. The people who did Spinal Tap did a sequel about folk singers, that wasn't very popular.
You'd think that there would be lots of humor in mocking the political Party that all these folk singers were associated with, but leftist Hollywood types weren't going to go there. Posted by: The ARC of History! at January 30, 2022 11:23 PM (I2/tG) Thing is that movie, "A Mighty Wind" is absolutely hilarious, especially if you figure out who they're poking fun at specifically. The "Folksmen" group is a satire of Peter, Paul, and Mary, with the hilarious backstory that the female character is actually a man in drag who identifies as a woman. Apparently deleting the Twitter cookies works too. I think that what is going on is that Twitter doesn't want to demand a login from someone who is just starting to browse Twitter, since that would really discourage new users. So, Twitter has a cookie set that figures out when you've used Twitter "enough" to start demanding the login. If it can't see the cookie, it doesn't demand a login. My what a charming and gracious young lady she is. Our country is broke. And there is no way to repair it.
--------------------- This is so backwards. In point of fact, in this particular area, things are moving in a better direction. You are confused, because it's happening for all the wrong reasons. The first municipal police force wasn't established until 1844 in NYC, and then it spread to other big cities after that. And then it wrapped its tentacles around the small towns. Now, we're a Police State, and patriots are afraid to risk themselves due to the miniature standing armies, and the big standing army our Founders feared and loathed. These features weren't built in to our country. They were bolted on, and they bloated from there. Arm yourself. Stop relying on a false sense of State security. I think part of the reason old music is killing new music in sales is simply the easiness of finding it. When I was a teen in the late 70s, we all knew the 60s music was better than our contemporary stuff. Or more realistically, the distilled and concentrated truly good stuff was better than the day to day new stuff we heard. However, good luck even hearing the old stuff beyond the Beatles \Stones\Zep occasionally.. and only some record stores carried the older stuff and you had to spend your limited budget buying it mostly unheard. Nowadays if you even hear of something you can at least hear it on YouTube or whatever for absolutely nothing and see if you like it. Easy as pie. Seems like "mainstream" music is corporate and controlled by producers and their goal is to have a front person who is "shocking" or "controversial" in some way so as to get their particular computer controlled track noticed. The only "artists" in music are the type who purposely don't write "commercial" music because they don't WANT to be popular.

If you wanted to listen to a particular song at home under your own control, you had to have the player and the albums for it. Now you can make your own detailed playlist of any artist, style and era you can imagine at the drop of a hat with either your phone or PC. New music is competing with the entire catalog of pop music. And anything recorded after about 1965 has a high enough sound quality that it's not like listening to primitively recorded stuff from the 40s and back. Even if there wasn't a seeming paucity of new ideas, good luck to you trying to make records as good as the best of the last 60 years one on one. Also, if you didn't hear them before, they are new to you. Us old folks MAY get a bit tired of a song the 1000th time we heard it, especially when it was in heavy rotation. But the kids haven't lived that.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at January 31, 2022 12:52 AM (dNqv+) When I worked in a movie theatre in nineteen-eighty somethin, it was real butter with salt added. There are other products, butter substitutes, etc, but I never used them. The nice part was the movie theatre butter reservoir would develop a nice salt crust on top. Dip a piece of popcorn in that and chomp down and your face would go all twitchy. Posted by: Bilwis Devourer of Innocent Souls, I'm starvin' over here at January 31, 2022 12:57 AM (cupoy) 549
