Meet The PetMorons

IMG_0357.jpg

This is a drawing I made of a neighbor’s rescue squirrel. A very sassy girl, name of ChiChi LaRue.
Sign me long time lurker.

I have signed you that. And thank you for your wonderful artistic rendering of that squirrel. You captured it perfectly I believe.

The following is a piece of art I had commissioned for the Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum's Christmas present from a Moron Artist.

Dreamer-Izzy.jpg

Time for some art! Here's a 2021 Christmas commission. It's one of my favorites from last year. I love the glint in the eyes of the lower pup. There's some real mischief hiding in that furry noggin, as MisHum may well attest.

As a special to the Moron Horde, I'm taking $25 off portrait orders in January-February. Mention the Saturday Pet Thread when you order (there's a section for notes), and the final bill will be reduced by $25. Info at Sigmadog

-Steve (aka topdog)

I have 2 pieces done by Steve, they grab everyone's attention who sees them.

Schooling. After my line of Boxers petered out, my wife rescued a 15 yr old hairy Chihuahua named Anna and I was graced with a Lab-Something (vet thought Great Dane) named Jack. Here’s Anna teaching The Boyo how to behave. - John

What an awesome shot! It looks like Anna is teaching the youngster a few things about wrasslin'. Thanks so much for sharing today.

image1(1).jpg

The first pic is of my previous foster and my obstinate English Bulldog/Pitbull mix. They are obviously posing for the cover art for their crappy Christian rock group album “Tripods”. When people asked how they lost their legs I simply responded: “I told them twice…”

The second pic is of my newest foster “Howard Johnson.” Howard and his sister “Hyatt” came to us courtesy of a neighboring county in Ohio, as they were placing a homeless woman in a shelter. She’d been staying in cheap hotels (hence the new dog names) with her dogs, until the money ran out. We promised her we would take them and find them good homes. Howard is 100 pounds of uncertainty and separation anxiety. We’re making slow but steady progress as he learns to trust me and adapt to his new surroundings. We’ve gone from growling and snarling to hugs and taking treats from my hand in a few short days. Soon we will move to training classes and adoption events. He’s a big sweetheart. - Lurker Rabidsquirrel.

Your first foster looks a lot like our youngest daughter's dog. I'm not sure how you and the other foster folks do it. I don't know if I could separate myself. Thank you for such amazing work.

Hi Mis Hum!

Dave in Fla here on an alternate email address.

We were in Oregon this weekend picking up our new puppy. Our last dog Star (my beloved collie) passed in November and we struggled over getting another dog. But fate stepped in and a litter of 13 golden retrievers was born on Thanksgiving Day.

This is Newton, he is 8 weeks old and is flying home with us to Florida.

Congrats on the new pup Dave!! He certainly looks like a keeper. Good luck with training. You have your work cut out. We appreciate learning about Newton.

This is Jake, trying take up more than his share of the bed. I post as Notsothoreau

It is amazing you allow them a small space and then the next thing you know you are being cast aside by the bed hogs. I know from experience. Jake looks quite content. Thanks for your contribution today.

33 Abby, our 14 y/o weimaraner, had pink eye in both eyes. She was a huge mess, with awful draining, pus in each eye. Vet gave us meds for her and she hated that. Finally after about 3 weeks, her right eye cleared up, but her left eye was still a mess and getting worse. The meds seemed to make that eye worse. Finally I went on the interwebs and looked for home remedies. Chamomile tea was the first thing on everyones list. I brewed the tea three times a day and bathed her eye in it. After 24 hours her eye looked markedly better after 48 hours it was completely clear. It's been a whole week and her eye is clear. We were afraid she was going to lose sight in that eye, but the vet declared her fine. She didn't mind that the meds didn't work and her only response was that sometimes the old ways are best.

34 Pet portraits always fascinated me - a different skill than people portraits. Bone structure, hair, natural positioning, are all so different. You'd need a lot of time drawing animals to get these just right.

When I was a kid one of the neighborhood dogs played a bit too rough with my duck - "Quack Quack" (No giggles please) and tore her back wide open. Truly a hideous gash. She was dying.

Mom scraped together all the hard drugs she could find in the house and we forced QQ to eat a handful of those damn pills. After she fell asleep, we stitched her up, rinsed her off and put her back in the pen. She slept for about 3 more days straight. When she woke up, she flapped her wings a couple of times and looked at us like - What? She was fine.

Old ways. It is known.

42 Hello, Moron pet people. Just skimmed past the post, but looks like some good pictures. Will go back & read.

We're having some lovely, warm, sunny days for a few days (until you folks up north leave the door open again). The cats are appreciative, especially my mellow yellow fellow Charlie.

Been a little concerned about Charlie. Hasn't been eating much. Maybe the hunting is good and he prefers fresh kill. Maybe it's the hot-cold-hot-cold weather messing with him.

Most mornings lately, Charlie will sniff at his food, then go meow at the front door to be let out, after which yellow-eyed black cat Ony will eat half of her food, then go clean out Charlie's bowl. Today they switched on me. Ony just sniffed at her food and wandered off, then Charlie ate some of his, then he cleaned out Ony's bowl.

Cats. Go figure.

Off to check the post & comments. Have a day, y'all.

We were at their house on Sunday. One of the cats was at the back door, which was closed. I walked up and I thought he was going to rattle the "I want out" jingle bells hanging on the door knob. Instead, he stretched all the way up to touch the door knob, then turned to me and waved his paw in an unmistakable way that I should open the door. So smart!

Of course, he must think I'm really stupid because I didn't let him out.

72 I've currently got two Goldens, Murphy and Whiskey. They are easy to train and love absolutely everyone they meet, even burglars. They pretty much stay puppies until they are about 10, when they slow down--just a little bit. As far as the hair goes, it is an issue but the nice thing is it tends to gather into tiny tumbleweeds, unlike my son's bulldog whose short hair is impossible to see until you sweep up a mound of it or sit in his favorite chair by mistake.

75 There is a "hybrid" dog breed called a golden chow. They are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Chow (duh!). The best dog I have ever had.

I used to tell people it was like having a smart Golden. A bit stubborn and watchful but if you were OK it was OK.

Great with little kids. Very playful and would demand attention when it was wanting some.

I ran into a few others at our dog park and found out they were a thing. All the other owners said they were a great breed.

Mocha was a red dog, beautiful coat and feathered tail with the boxy retriever head and ears. Very muscular chest with a bit of the lion mane going on.

There's a Facebook page of owners if you want to check them out. Hard to find.

Posted by: m at January 29, 2022 04:16 PM (C5qZr)

78 Mocha would have ripped the leg of of someone who didn't belong where they were. She never attacked or even barked at anyone but she was always watching and cautious with someone new until she got the score. Then she was their best friend, just like a Golden.

Heck she didn't even bark when someone came to the door. She would come and get you and follow you to the door and stick her head out just enough to se what was going on. Most people didn't even realize she was there.

All dogs were are different but this seems to be the nature of the Golden Chow. A great alternative to a Golden if you want someone to watch out for danger.

90 Over the last month we've been so worried about our Eddie (who graced these pages years ago)- the vet thought he had leukemia or worse. After repeated and expensive(!) blood work, visits with an oncologist, and much prayer, we learned Friday that Ed does NOT have leukemia! We still don't know what caused a few things he's suffered from, but we are so relieved and grateful.

95 I had to run out to the 'burbs this morning for Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat's Rx of prednisolone. The vet office was out, but I took the script to the pharmacy that has done his gabapentin. Now I can call one place in future and have them both delivered to my work.

He's asleep in his pet bed right now. Someone on the EMT commented, when I mentioned how he sprawls on the floor and looks at me with a "Come pet me" look, that he's engaging with his people, and that's true. Tonight he gets not only his 3rd gabapentin paste on the ear, but his 2x a week shot, and his oral prednisolone. We'll spread it out over the evening.

Without definitive blood work or other such stuff, it's so hard to try to pin down what ails our pets. Vets do have it tough with patients who can't talk about their symptoms. Everyone has to guess and hope someone guesses right.

133 Well, big new for our family - we are getting a new dog! Our dear old 14 year old Cavapoo, Yin, died close to a year ago. My husband wanted to get another dog right away, but I thought we'd better wait, and not just rush into it. We decided just before Christmas that we should go for it, and are getting a Golden Doodle (golden lab/poodle cross). Tomorrow we all drive out to the breeder's to see the puppy for the first time! We've picked a boy this time - Yin was a female - and should be able to bring him home in about 2 weeks. Very excited! Now I start worrying that we won't know what to do - just like having a baby, you worry that somehow you'll mess everything up just through ignorance.

146 Some might remember the tiny two-headed kitten (pic in pet thread, Sept before last). Daughter & SiL gave them a home, and now they are big guys. Got to get y'all some updated pix (I say to myself every week).

Posted by: mindful webworker - two other happy cats at January 29, 2022 03:45 PM (utufg)

My lanky tabby cat Julius used to do that - stand at the back door and move paws alternately up on down on opposite sides of the knob when he wanted out. He knew the exact mechanism for opening but no grip.

He used to go out and wander on evening even before eating, but eventually we got to an understanding that if I didn't let him out I had a good reason for it.

Yes, temperamentally this should be a really good fit. Dean and I are in our 60s now, we need a dog that's gentle and forgiving. A big hound that's happiest bounding over rocks on mountain hikes just isn't going to be right for us. This time, we're going to go for professional training, so our dog will be able to walk on a leash and go for walks. Yin wouldn't do it; she'd walk 20 feet then sit down and we'd have to pick her up and carry her.

Put poop in the holes?

Posted by: IrishEi at January 29, 2022 05:05 PM (0TVNF)

150 Get a shovel and go scoop up some poop. We have a big yard and the dogs have a "minefield" they use. Put it in the hole and cover it up with the dirt they threw out of the hole.

They won't dig there again. Somewhere else maybe.

Posted by: fd at January 29, 2022 05:07 PM (vrz2I)

151 Yes Chows are aggressive. Mostly if you don't respect their space or mess with someone on their OK list.

A lot of people are very stupid when they meet a new dog and go right into the "Aww, she's so cute" mode grabbing them and what not. Chows are extremely territorial and that includes where they are standing right now.

Goldens are just about the exact opposite and know no boundaries. Everyone is a plaything. This is not the real world.

The Golden Chow mix tends to bring them to the center of the spectrum in terms of attitude. Plus they look more like Goldens or a dominantly Golden mix so people don't freak out when they see them.

The only obvious Chow trait is that they have some black on their tongues which is a tell.

They are extremely loyal dogs who do not tend to wander off because their job is being with their people.

It works. You just have to be consistent and do it every single time they dig a hole. They like to dig in soft spots which is what filled holes are, so they frequently go back to the same spots. If they keep hitting poop consistently, they stop. Works like a charm.

155 Chamomile tea was the first thing on everyones list. I brewed the tea three times a day and bathed her eye in it. After 24 hours her eye looked markedly better after 48 hours it was completely clear. It's been a whole week and her eye is clear.
