The Morning Report - 1/20/22

minorincursionjoey.jpg

Good morning, kids. Thursday and during yesterday's Potemkin village "press conference," the shambling, shuffling, stuttering, alternately-shrieking-and-whispering, heavily-doctored demento whose name tag "Doctor" Jill had sewn on his Depends reads "Joe Biden" actually managed to deliver one stunning, crystal clear absolute emmes truth. Probably, the first true thing he uttered in 50 years in politics if not his entire damnable existence in this world.

"I didn't overpromise, but I probably outperformed what anybody thought would happen."

Absolutely 100% fuckin' A, bubba. Between the eye-bleeds, the incoherent shrieking, the perpetual fog and all the other in your face signs of a decrepit geezer who's two spoonfuls of paste down the windpipe from being laid out on the slab in the center of the Capitol Rotunda (just as soon as they remove McCain), I thought for sure that he'd be gone inside of six months. Yet one absolutely disastrous year later, there he blows. When queried why the American people have doubts about his cognitive ability (surprised that that one got through the censors), he stated "I have no idea." No idea about why the American people think he has the medulla oblongata of a sponge or no idea what the reporter is asking him? Either way, this country - what's left of it - is proper fucked.

Despite a media that is a propaganda arm (if not the actual makers of policy as some suggest) that is desperate to spin and shield the American people from this disaster they foisted on us, they see right through it. Mostly because they are getting "the most successful economic recovery in history" good and hard at the gas pump, supermarket and everywhere else. That is, where there are actual products on the shelves to sell at stagflationary prices and not stuck on a container ship off the coast or looted from a UP boxcar in LA.

Not only do we see it, but you bet your ass the rest of the world sees it.

The situation along the Ukraine-Russia border is so serious that one hesitates to make a quip, but here goes: If you ever get a chance to play poker with Joe Biden, take it. As you're playing, Biden will talk a lot and maybe reveal his cards. And yet whether he's revealing the truth about his intentions or not, there'll be plenty of tells as to the cards he's playing, such that if you're watching him closely, you'll win most of the pots.

Of course, the [so-called quote-unquote "president"] isn't playing card games these days, and yet the commander-in-chief is playing for some very high stakes in the geopolitical arena -- and against some sharp players, notably Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Unfortunately for the U.S., Biden has never had much self-discipline, and even more unfortunately, he's gotten, well, old.

So it's no wonder that Biden's White House handlers have been keeping him on a short leash. His solo press conference today was his first in ten months. The fear, of course, was that Biden would say something stupid -- and that's exactly what he did.

Asked about Putin's plans toward Ukraine, Biden answered, "My guess is he will move in, he has to do something. . . "

. . .To be sure, Biden indicated that he was against Russia attacking Ukraine, and yet at the same time, over the course of a two-hour session with the press -- he obviously enjoys being off the leash -- the [so-called quote-unquote "president"] telegraphed to Putin that he was willing to split hairs, that he might not call a spade a spade: "It's one thing if it's a minor incursion and we end up having to fight about what to do and not do," he told reporters. In other words, maybe an incursion is okay, but not an invasion. Got that?

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) summed it up: "Joe Biden's impotence emboldened Vladimir Putin and now he just green-lighted Putin to invade Ukraine . . ."

. . . Back in January 1950, Secretary of State Dean Acheson outlined the U.S. defense perimeter in East Asia and excluded South Korea. Six months later, North Korea attacked South Korea. The U.S. intervened after all, and over the next three years of fighting, American armed forces suffered 33,686 deaths. It's widely believed that had the U.S. been more clear about what it would do, about its willingness to defend South Korea, the North Koreans would never have attacked.

In other words, the whole Korean War was based on a misunderstanding. So we can see: Clarity can be a good deterrent and can save a lot of lives.

Sadly, in our time, it wasn't a secretary of state, but rather, a much more important figure -- the [so-called quote-unquote "president"] himself -- who was clear as mud. And so we don't know what Putin will do, just as we don't know what Biden will do.

This is how nations stumble into wars.

To Biden, a minor incursion is when he shares a bathtub with his daughter. On a purely personal level, owing to my family's history, I could give a rat's ass about Ukraine and Russia for that matter. But the fact is, we made commitments to defend Ukraine and the infamous promise to protect their independence if they gave up their nukes was as worthless as Chamberlain's Munich agreement. Whether it was right or wrong to make that pledge, we did and by reneging on it, it led to Putin taking Crimea as well as our word being seen as worthless to friend and foe alike.

The problem here is that with Biden absolutely failing and flailing politically as well as policy-wise everywhere you turn, there's no better time for the tail to wag the dog. Given the fact that he and his handlers at the Kalorama Klown Komintern got utterly and deservedly raked over the coals over the Afghanistan bug-out disaster, going to war to re-establish his alleged tough guy machismo image, such as he/they try to project, is just the ticket to get the junta back on track.

Ho. Lee. Fook, if that is their calculus. If they even have freaking calculus as opposed to just flinging utter horseshit in all directions and praying something sticks. And forgetting our national security and foreign policy, what will Biden do vis a vis Ukraine because of his and his bastard son's "O'Rourke Enterprises" dealings with the corrupt government there? In any case, let's not forget that we're not talking about shooting off a few cruise missiles into an empty tent or a disused aspirin factory in the fictional Mission: Impossible third world country of San Cristobal or the East European People's Republic located somewhere on Gower between Sunset and Melrose.

This is potentially a shooting war between Russia. Russia that has nuclear weapons. THAT Russia. The Chi-Coms have got to be having projectile orgasms over the potential to waltz into Taiwan while the 101st Airborne Junk-Tucker Division parachutes in Klinger's heels into the Pripyat Marshes. I can't even . . .

What a complete, unmitigated clusterfuck. But while our enemies are laughing their asses off at their good fortune, the American people, or at least those of us in the nation formerly known as the United States who identify as American (or American-American for those into identity politics), Biden threw down the gauntlet. Funny how he always manages to be clear-headed when he's hurling threats, insults and lies.

"Speaking of voting rights legislation, if this isn't passed, do you still believe the upcoming election will be fairly conducted and the results will be legitimate?" Allison Harris of NewsNation asked [so-called quote-unquote "president"] Biden.

"Well, it all depends on whether or not we're able to make the case to the American people that some of this is being set up to try to alter the outcome of the election."

So, elections were secure, fair, and legitimate when Trump was president, but won't be secure, fair, or legitimate unless the Democrats' voting legislation is passed.

In other words, elections are only secure, fair, and legitimate when Democrats win.

Now that Manchin and Sinema held firm to preserve the filibuster and at least in theory kill the Democrats attempt to codify in law a federalizing of our elections that in effect would allow them to rig every national election forever, if indeed the midterms, as predicted, deliver a wipeout to the Democrats, you better believe that BLM/Antifa and every other Democrat-sanctioned terrorist is going to take to the streets to engage in a real insurrection. Certainly not the fake FBI-planned and led "riot" of 1/6/21 that was the worst threat to "our precious democracy" (vomit) since the Civil War, Pearl Harbor and 9/11 combined.

As a complete aside, but something I do not want to get lost in the sauce, I submit this nugget of madness:

Arrest Warrants Count as ID For Illegal Migrants at Airport Security, TSA Says

So, the left thinks voter ID is racist and repressive but in DC itself, you cannot walk the streets without showing your ausweiss.

Gevalt.

Yesterday I was looking over house listings on Zillow for Virginia. I checked the box "must have A/C," but most of the listings said "heat pump." Does that work in hot, humid conditions? If not, and it also doesn't work below 40 F., why would you have it (aside from, I guess, it's cheaper to run)?

Honestly, I think that was his best answer of the night. The purpose of the question was probably not to hear an answer, but to ask it and get it out there in public as a point of wider discussion among real people. How could 'ole Oatmeal Brain answer that? There's no good answer to that question. He would go into an angry dementia spiral about how it ain't true and all his detractors are sinister goons, or he could answer that sometimes he feels his age, or he could just dismiss it.

He dismissed it and he did so without an emotional outburst. It was probably his best work in yesterday's performance.

19 My favorite blatant contradiction in yesterday's presser is this pair of gems.
First: ... everybody talks about how Russia has control over the energy supply that Europe absorbs. Well, guess what? That - that money that they earn from that makes about 45 percent of the economy. I don't see that as a one-way street.

Later: ... and I think there's ways in which we can be of some value added in terms of the price of gas - natural gas and the like - to take the burden off of European countries that are now totally dependent on Russia.

What a toolbox.

Heat pumps work well in hot and cold weather however they do not work very well when the outside temp gets down to 32F. When it is that cold here I supplement the heat pump with an indoor electric heater.

33 Biden's collapse yesterday was really a thing to behold. Subjectively, that presser was, for most of its duration, one of his best performances in at least a year. He was well-rested, well-prepared (knowing the questions in advance sure does help on that front ...), and his drug cocktail was seriously on point. He was clear-spoken as compared to his normal performance, he wasn't bobbing and weaving all over the place, he wasn't slurring constantly. He looked and sounded like a human.

For a while. He first starting mentioning the time at about 5:20. He said the conference would last another 20 minutes. By 5:30 or so, he was starting to return to form. He got angry, he started slurring, etc. By the stop time of 5:40, he kept going and his collapse accelerated. By the time they wrapped up at 5:55, he had been stumbling and slurring and bobbing and weaving and rambling and hugging his laptop and wandering around for several minutes.

My guess? He was supposed to mention the time at 5:15 and end it by 5:30, with a push to 5:40 if absolutely necessary and a drop-dead time of 5:45. He went 10 minutes longer than that, and he decayed in real time. His post-5:30 performance was awful.

Because with Europe entirely dependent on Russian energy, it gives Russia hegemony if they want it and that is counter to traditional American interests - even though it doesn't matter because Russia would never cut off European energy because that would me they choose to "bite off their nose to spite their face" (no shit, he actually said "bite off their nose").

67 ... the American people, or at least those of us in the nation formerly known as the United States who identify as American (or American-American for those into identity politics)...

JJ, you have inspired me this morning. Not into the customary rage that the Morning Report provides, but a tiny way to cross the divide with our lunatic countrymen.

The Hyphenated American is pretty well an accepted cultural icon of identity, where the root indicates some sort of ethnic taxonomy and the latter representing current dwelling (not necessarily participating or making it an identity). African-American, the root is African and is the identity, the trailing word doesn't necessarily have to coincide with one's residency, but indicates that the person is probably not a strict African living in Africa. An example of this was when a presenter for the Olympics described a Jamaican athlete as "African-American".

I say all of that to introduce how I will present my defining hyphenation and that is Christian-American, that is part of the church militant (not yet triumphant)

I'd have to go compare durations and find out, but I can't be bothered. This reeks like one of those technical dodges they love so much. This is probably technically true in terms of "a scheduled White House press conference in terms of total duration" or something like that. If you're being honest and include things like "open Q&A following prepared remarks" and "duration of ad-hoc interviews on the White House Lawn" and "questions following special-purpose addresses" then I am sure the math changes pretty significantly.

81 In yesterday's press conference, there was one thing that really stood out as a tiny little glimmer of good news and possibly - though unlikely - a reason to be a very tiny less bit cynical. It was on the topic of some of his landmark bills that are failing, and about Republicans in particular.

did you ever think that one man out of office could intimidate an entire party where they're unwilling to take any vote contrary to what he thinks should be taken for fear of being defeated in a primary?
I've had five Republican senators talk to me ... who've told me that they agree with whatever I'm talking about for them to do. "But, Joe, if I do it, I'm going to get defeated in a primary."

If you're looking for anything good yesterday, that's it. Rumor yesterday is that it wasn't on the script and that his generals were discussing whether they should allow a "minor incursion" to pass by, and Biden flapped his lips about it in a press conference.

No idea if it's true or not. I could see it going either way.

Why will that happen? Because they never really liked Biden, no one did. He was sold to them as someone who can Make Things Happen! Especially in the Senate, where he so Popular! Don't vote for Bernie, he can't get anything done, but Biden will!!! Well now Schumer just staged a grand public spectacle showing the left that all of that was a Lie. Now that Biden has failed on the BBB and their precious voting bill, they face the bitter truth that he is going to fail on *everything* they wanted done. They were sold a bill of goods, and after last night no one can deny it.

They're all going to be pissed, and Biden will be the focus.

I do love the language in use, though. This isn't new, it's just always so obvious. When some Republicans help the Democrats pass a bill, it's "bipartisanship" - even if it's just Romney or McCain. When some Democrats help the Republicans block a bill, it's a "disunifying breaking of ranks."

No. No more double language. The election law bill and the repeal of the filibuster didn't exhibit turncoat disunion in the Democrats, they had bipartisan opposition.

167 31 8 Yesterday I was looking over house listings on Zillow for Virginia. I checked the box "must have A/C," but most of the listings said "heat pump." Does that work in hot, humid conditions? If not, and it also doesn't work below 40 F., why would you have it (aside from, I guess, it's cheaper to run)?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius

Wolfus, heat pumps are more efficient at cooling but struggle a bit when low temperatures are outside. Usual course of action is emergency heat with heat strips inside the air handler unit of various sizes which are normally installed with the air pump units.

Heat strips suck energy as auxiliary heat for low temps but some sort of auxiliary heating is necessary with all but the newest generation of hi tech heat pumps. Some of the new hi tech heat pumps can function decently down to about 0 to 10 degrees farenheit. Then, there is geothermal heat pump systems which are ultra efficient.

Manchin's home state poll numbers have gone way UP since he's made these moves. So he won't care, and the more they attack him the more he is going to delight in showing them just who does run Bartertown.

On Sinema, James Madison and I have had a discussion. The left in Az is certainly wanting to primary her, but I think she has a huge opening to run in 2024 as an Independent, like Angus King. With her name recognition and brand established, I believe she has a good opportunity to actually increase her support that way. A lot will depend on whether Mark Kelly fails this fall. Mitch made sure that the corporate tax cut was permanent, the personal income tax cuts go to about 2026 tax year due to the ten year limit on reconciliation. That is, unless the Dems alter them via other bills, such as the infrastructure bill has some tax components to it in order to 'pay' for it.

I'm convinced that the GOPe's effort to purge the party of Trump in January of last year blew up into a massive, massive drop off in donations as well as threats of never voting Republican again from a large number of voters. That's why it took just a couple of weeks for Mitch to turn around and say, "Oh, nevermind. Trump has a future in the party if he wants." They went from dancing on his grave to reserving him the best seat at the table, and it's not because they found the goodness in their hearts.

I think the GOPe is terrified of losing their phoney baloney jobs through voting.

Romney might backstab us - but he would NEVER dare cross Mitch. and just for the record, the previous trillion dollar "infrastructure" bill passed easily because Mitch *wanted* it to pass - it funded a bunch of pet projects for him.

I'm not saying Mitch is on our side, he isn't - but he's not on Biden's side either. He's on his own side, but we do get lucky when his interests coincide with ours.

It would be more likely the other way; House bills must be germane to the subject addressed but Senate bills do not.

What the House can do is what was done here--take an unrelated bill that passed the Senate such as the NASA bill--strip the language and then substitute their voting bill as an amendment to the bill. Vote for the amendment and send it back to the Senate for confirmation.

The "bipartisan bill" they're talking about is one that would rewrite the ambiguity in the Electoral Count Act of 1887, which was passed as a reaction to the RutherFraud election of 1876. It is unclear in parts and overly complicated, and has been mostly ignored. From a purely technical POV, it could stand a rewrite. BUT I don't think this can happen now, because the Progs are furious. *They* wanted a grab bag bill with a whole bunch of "Racial Justice" thrown into it and Federal Control of all elections; they never wanted to just reform some arcane 1887 law so that they could say they "did something".

So, I think the progs will kill this.

I don't particularly. The filibuster removal directly threatens the power of every senator including some of the Dems. One of the reasons that it has persisted is that it gives powers to individual senators in the minority which will be yielded up to party leaders in the Senate if there is no filibuster. In the House, the opposition has literally very little to do and no power to do much of anything. In the Senate, each senator, under the rules, still has individual powers such as amendments, etc. and most of the Senate depends on unanimous consent to function so as to have three day work weeks and lengthy recesses.

I'm sure they are, but the probably have a year to do whatever they need to do to prepare for it. Here's how I see it happening:
Xi will be reconfirmed during the party congress next year. After his coronation as emperor, he will move on Taiwan. He wants to be the greatest emperor in Chinese history and he's going for the brass ring. He will take Taiwan and in so doing reunify China for the first time since the Han Dynasty, cow the West and lay bare their impotence, ascend to become the absolute hegemon of East Asia and be the actor of supreme importance globally and restore China to its rightful place as the power center of all things.

I think that's the ambition, and that's the gamble. But Taiwan has a year or so to try to counter it.

Can anyone please explain to me why the US should care about Ukraine?

Posted by: Lizzy at January 20, 2022 08:57 AM (URNdm)

------

Hi Lizzy,

I know nothing about Ukraine (sans a little about the Holodomor) but my understanding is that we entered a treaty to protect them from the Russian Bear (1994 under Clinton?) in exchange for destroying all of there nuclear weapons.

And then Putin crossed DogEater's pink line into the Crimea and we did nothing ... so I guess, like everything else now, our word is meaningless (especially to friends, but no so much to foes) and the feral government has no obligation to keep it anymore?

282 Can anyone please explain to me why the US should care about Ukraine?
Posted by: Lizzy at January 20, 2022 08:57 AM (URNdm)
=============
Neocons and Democrats interests converge on Ukraine, and they are arguing for Wag The Dog by citing two reasons: 1) GHWB promised (no treaty) to protect Ukraine borders from Russia in return for them giving up nukes, post Soviet collapse, so we should honor the Bush commitment, and 2) Putin is a warlord seeking to recreate a Russian empire and we should battle that now, while he is relatively weak.

Of course, this whole argument is theater. Biden has no military power to stop Putin. Biden now argues American will apply economic sanctions, but Germany will not support sanctions (because they need Russian energy) so that is (also) a completely empty threat.

Silly stuff.

Posted by: Huck Follywood at January 20, 2022 09:06 AM (E89Mr)

283 268 I don't particularly.

The GOP has consistently demonstrated it doesn't have the ability to adapt to the changing demands of its base. It might be "Trump's GOP" but nobody in the GOP believes that.

Lastly, there's a strong push by the J6 committee to gin up something that will stick to Trump and disqualify him from running in '24. You have to believe McConnell approves.

323 I wouldn't undercut the strategic importance of Ukraine. Step away from the politics, personal biases and our past history of participating in "endless wars". I can make a better case for Ukraine, then I could Iraq of even the type/length of war we fought in AFG. Russia cares about Ukraine for a reason- and it's not just the potential NATO encroachment on their border. Nobody is threatening Russia and the geopolitical realities have changed in Europe for reasons too long to articulate here. Russia has been the expansionist power as proven by Crimea, and letting them get away with that has brought about the current situation. Putin is not a good person nor are his designs on Europe good. They still cause a lot of trouble around the world for the U.S. whenever they can. They are an adversary and Democrat use if Russia as a political tool has made that worse. We do need to draw a line in Ukraine on those activities. Not for Ukraine per se, but for our own protection.

And in doing so are making a crucial mistake. They not only undermine their fiction about the last election, but they will be forced to provide material proof of fraud. There are now lawsuits and changes as a result thereof from the last election. There is material proof in many of the states of illegal votes, harvesting and other illegalities. Any lawsuits will get dropped or thrown out quickly, but they'll have their narrative. Voting in America is unfair and the only way to fix it is to give Congress unelected bureaucrats appointed by Democrats complete control over voting across the whole nation.

It's a gamble, and a damn big one. China has an aging population and decades of the one-child policy has led to a shortage of young people (industrialization has continued the trend). People are much more willing to throw away their children on wars of conquest when they have a lot of them. When you have just one, and you need him to care for you in your old age, you're a lot less tolerant. There are serious social problems in Red China that war will exacerbate unless it goes well.

Then there's Taiwan itself. It isn't helpless. It depends on how much Red China has subverted the government in Taipei, but Taiwan *can* fight back and make it extremely expensive. If things get desperate, they are close enough to China to hit the homeland - bombing Shanghai, hitting the Three Gorges Dam, etc. - and cause even more problems. And then there's the wildcards like Japan and Korea. What if they throw in with Taiwan?

It's an "all the marbles" play. I just think Xi will try it.

Criticism of open borders and a possible openness to changing parties, most likely. While it probably is far too late for electoral politics to matter, the Democrats made a fatal, unforced error in throwing the borders wide open and infuriating Hispanics in the Rio Grande Valley. Cuellar has tried to have it both ways, criticizing open borders and remaining a member of the party dedicated to them, and the Democrats' secret political police are harassing him to send a message to other Hispanic Texas Democrat officeholders.

Putting aside for a moment there will always be people who believe, without proof, what Democrats say, I believe the activities occurring since the last election changes things. Democrats went all in on electoral fraud and illegalities. Their officials illegally changed voting rules, usurping legislative power. That game has been settled by the courts and won't be possible again. That's led to a slew of changes in the way elections are conducted (drop boxes, harvesting., etc.). Voters roles are being cleaned up due to lawsuits. So they are watching people who vote in two states, etc. Voter ID is going to cut down on a lit of the fraud, which is why they are freaking out and doing things like trying to sue candidates.

That said, there is a lot more awareness and substantive change. I don't know how many people will buy the narrative

It does, and war is the usual answer. That would make more sense in the 90s than now. China still has a baby bust following the end of the one-child policy, but the sex ratio has been recovering since well before it ended formally in 2016. A lot of those surplus men are in their 30s and 40s now, and men that old don't usually make wonderful soldiers for frontline battle.

My gut says that 35 is too low for a real red "wave". I doubt that Bannon's overly optimistic +100 seats is truly possible, but the thing with gerrymanders is that they work on the margins, but not really in a wave election. Deep blue districts will stay blue, but even D+7 seats could flip in a wave.

We're going to have another year of high inflation and economic damage. Biden can't change that without gutting all of his policies, and he's not going to do that. A wave of very angry voters to the polls is possible, with many motivated simply to vote out the party in power. I could see a 50+ seat pickup by the GOP in such a scenario.

412 I saw a follow up post where he was back home and said he was doing much better. talked about how he was in a room with an elderly stroke victim, and resolved to do much more to make sure that wasn't him some day.

Damn Robert! You been asleep for the last 20 years?

Fuck me, but you are naive.

414 I saw a good analysis (might have been at RCP) that broker races down and held that, because of successful redistricting by some dem states, "safe seats", and the GOP having done pretty well in Congressional races in 2020, the best outcome they can hope for is a plus 35. Still, that would give them almost a 250 - 185 majority in the next Congress.

You might be referring to Sean Trende's article from a few days ago. He is always worth reading, btw.

415 but the sex ratio has been recovering since well before it ended formally in 2016.

I did not know that - that's why I love this place, I learn things all the time!! Well, fingers crossed for poor Taiwan. America has become a terrible friend and a toothless enemy.

416 "28 Dims not running for reelection..."

Rats leaving a sinking ship.

This may be a plan...get Republicans back into leadership to take blame for the impending collapse.

Then liberals will sadly wag their heads, cluck their forked tongues and wipe imaginary tears off their facelifts.

"Seeeee...we *told* you this would happen..."(sob).

418 Minor Incursion = "Just the Tip" ??

Posted by: deadrody at January 20, 2022 10:38 AM (/jrmI)

419 'Minor incursion'?

The senator's niece tells her girlfriend that, yes, Biden assaulted her on stage, but the Entire Official Washington Swamp is deeply invested in pretending otherwise. It's 'The Emperor's New Speedo'. They've been protecting Joe--and many others--for so damn long, they've forgotten that its even wrong.

This only proves the point.

A man who can't restrain himself from groping a child on stage at a public event has ZERO chance of resisting professional honeypot scenarios set up by our adversaries.

When Biden says he's kidding, believe him.

Every time Biden opens his mouth, it's an international incident.

When the administration is sending out Kamala to try to fix what Biden did yesterday, you know their desperate. Watching her try to justify Biden's '22 election illegitimacy this morning was like a verbal interpretation of a person falling down the stairs.

421 Ukraine.
1. Russia invades and Joe will do something about those racist White Supremacist's, Homophobic, Islamophobes Trump supporters.
2. Russia invades and a news blackout and a lid will be called.

423 re Biden's Ukraine statement;

Does anyone else remember the Democrats blaming Iraq's invasion of Kuwait on Ambassador April Glaspie's tacit approval to Sadaam's invasion?
