The Morning Rant
[Dave in Fla, Guest Monkey]

Monkey.png

Sometimes it is useful to stop a moment and consider how your enemies think. We make fun of how insane they are on a regular basis but consider for a moment how they appeal to their voters. What themes and messages do they think resonate?

I don't know why, but somehow the DCCC got my phone number and thought I was a good target for fundraising. So I received their pitch to raise money for congressional campaigns. This is an interesting look into what they consider to be winning messages.

President Barack Obama just broke his silence and called on EVERY Democrat to step up to PROTECT our once-in-a-lifetime Majorities.

If just 4,000 grassroots Democrats answer Barack's powerful calls, we could CLINCH our can't-miss midnight goal and strengthen our efforts to defeat EVERY Republican who threatens our Democrats. Will you rush $20 to the DCCC to expand our House Majority?

The last time Republicans held power...

…They PUSHED tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy,

…They tried to REPEAL the Affordable Care Act,

…And they INCITED a deadly insurrection at our nation's Capitol.

We can't let them ever hold the Majority again.

And when Barack personally calls us to step up - we wouldn't dare let him down.

Can we count on you to chip in $20 to elect House Democrats and hand Trump's House Republicans a STUNNING rebuke?

Thanks,
DCCC

I have a few observations.

First notice who they believe is the major figure who will appeal to their base. It isn't Joe Biden or Kamala Harris. It is Barack Obama. He has been out of office for 5 years, and he is the only player on the field that has any pull with the Democrat base. This would be like using George Bush to campaign in 2013. The Democrats have a problem with viable figures in national politics, since they were wiped out at the state level in 2012. After Obama, there is no one to turn to. Every other national level politician, including the sitting president, is unable to appeal to anyone enough to raise a lousy $20.

The issues they use in their pitch are pretty weak. Tax cuts for the rich, repeal Obamacare, and January 6th. Those three barely register with the public as an issue of any importance. They don't even appeal to Climate Change as an issue, where they could easily blame Republicans after Trump withdrew from the Paris Accords. The rich who got tax cuts are almost all Democrats anyway, Obamacare hasn't seen an attempt at reform in 4 years, and January 6th is an inside the beltway shibboleth that doesn't resonate in the rest of the country.

Finally, Trump continues to live rent free in Democrat heads. It isn't House Republicans; it is TRUMP'S House Republicans. How many decades do the Democrats keep running against Trump? Over a year after the election, and Democrats still can't motive anyone to vote for them. They can only appeal to Not Republican and Not Trump. Regardless of whether or not you think Trump should be the nominee in 2024, one thing he still brings to the table is a large block of voters who will cast an affirmative vote for the man.

How about a nice easy Who Dis?

My wife asked me that, and my answer is that it's not about any intelligent consideration, it's about self preservation. A lot of videos have come out showing Boris and his ministers partying privately over the last 2 years while ignoring the COVID regulations, and now *everyone* is pissed at them. The true conservatives for the authoritarian tyranny they've pushed, and the Branch Covidians hate them for acting like it's all a great big joke whenever they're in private.

So yesterday, in an act of self preservation, Boris just said "fuggitall, it's over, do whatever you want."

And his Senate, too. That was the biggest thing I noticed from Oatmeal Brains' presser yesterday. He said this:
did you ever think that one man out of office could intimidate an entire party where they're unwilling to take any vote contrary to what he thinks should be taken for fear of being defeated in a primary?
I've had five Republican senators talk to me ... who've told me that they agree with whatever I'm talking about for them to do. "But, Joe, if I do it, I'm going to get defeated in a primary."

Republicans are afraid of the base, and so they are having to try to stop the Dems (though I am sure it makes them miserable). The Republicans are afraid of the base because Trump fired them and reset expectations for what politicians actually do and say. It is in a real way Trump's "fault," but it isn't him doing it anymore. It's the base, and the base is *pissed.* The Dems have a much harder problem to deal with - and so do the GOP - than Trump the man.

71 I guess it is always easier to think of things you should say in the comfort of your home, but some of the reporters from non-MSM channels blew a great opportunity yesterday. A couple of what they asked: should have asked.

Doocey asked: Why are you going so hard Left?
Doocey should have asked: Gallup reports a 14 point swing from D to R in your first year, inflation is at a 40 year high, violent crime is up double-digits in D cities, and the border is a disaster. Isn't your answer that you will do well in the mid-terms kind of delusional?

Rosen asked: 49% of Americans question your mental competence. Why?
Rosen should have asked: Given that 49% of Americans question your mental competence, will you agree to take and publicly release a Montreal Cognitive Assessment?

Wegman, a RCN reporter, when challenging Biden on the Bull Connor/George Wallace/Jefferson Davis statement, was unprepared when Biden attacked. Wegman should have read Biden's quote back to him, and asked Biden if HE could read and understand what HE said in that execrable speech.

Perhaps I'm overthinking it, but I expect to see more stories like this... not overtly political but themed in a manner that will lead the viewer to conclude that "Floridians suck, their laws suck, and therefore DeSantis sucks"

______________

Yep, Boris is embroiled in a big scandal now. He's trying to save his own ass.

Saw an article earlier this morning about how Boris privately told the queen that he'd be willing to relax the covid rules for Prince Phillip's funeral so that there could be more people in attendance, the queen could have somebody sit next to her, etc.

The queen said no. Said it wouldn't be fair to ordinary citizens who'd not been able to hold regular funerals for their loved ones due to the covid restrictions.

The queen is a much better politician than the professional pols. She understands the "do as I say and not as I do" shit doesn't go over well with the public. She was not about to allow those optics.

Kubrick's might have been the better movie overall, but it was not the story King wrote. It would have been better for Kubrick to have called it Overlook and renamed all the characters, since the scripted people bore so little resemblance to King's originals.

King's a great storyteller and good stylist, and his best work is outside the "horror" genre. I will always love his early stuff and his novelettes like The Body and Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. Even his detractors usually like those stories and the films made from them.

I heard the Dems grumbling for years during Obama that the national Party was neglecting/abandoning the state parties in favor of a federalized approach where only the President mattered.

It was a good gamble... they had a reasonable belief that the Presidency was theirs forever, and a fully operational GOP Cuck Star that would obviate the need for clear Congressional majorities ever again.

It's still likely a good gamble. They can still rig Presidential elections, and the GOP hasn't changed. But Trump seriously impeded that plan, and having a good State-level game, with a robust bench of younger, more junior candidates to tap for races would be a good thing for them right now.

154 RealClearInvestigations has a Durham analysis up that concludes the Horowitz investigation of Crossfire Hurricane led people to incorrectly conclude the whole fraud was "properly predicated", meaning the FBI had a legit reason to open the Trump investigation.

Durham says in writing his investigation disagrees completely on that point.

If the FBI opened the case knowing it was fraudulent, that means (given the cast of characters involved) there has to be very serious cases upcoming. No other conclusion possible. When?

Obama is sitting on a Hawaiian beach with a Mai Tai and a multi-million dollar bank account. The average person is trying to see if they can afford groceries and get to work without being assaulted. They're also being put on law enforcement watch lists for demanding a role in their kids education, or being forced to take experimental medicine they don't want in order to keep their jobs.

Obama was the camel's nose inside the tent for this whole insidious assault on our country.

Though it's not Dirty Harry's entrance in the film, I'd put his appearance as an armed silhouette at the climax of Sudden Impact on that list. (I've always suspected the director was inspired by Robert Vaughn's silhouette as Napoleon Solo in the U.N.C.L.E. pilot.)

311 I live in Wisconsin's 1st congressional district, which is served by Brian Steil (R). I keep getting emails from a woman who's running against him. She's obviously a D, but the emails never mention her party. Not even once. She attacks Steil himself, but never mentions the party's platform or legislation, let alone "President" Biden. I'd love to see the results of the polling that led to that decision!

When Republicans try to raise money, they talk about red meat, hot-button issues that will resonate with their base and get them to send money. They talk about things like repealing Obamacare, stopping abortion, ending CRT in schools etc. They have no real interest in this stuff or desire to do anything about it, but they know their audience does.

Similarly, this isn't the agenda of the Democrats, its what will whip up the base and get them to open their wallets.

Maybe, but it is part and parcel of the standard "all tariffs are bad, no exceptions" battering ram that has crippled American industry and led to deficit spending.

"Free Trade" is the biggest scam ever. It sounds good, and probably is good, except, that isn't what we have and it was never intended to be that way.

I'd say that Johnny Depp is that guy for me. Before he just gave up and went totally bonkers playing Jack Sparrow, he was always that guy that put in consistently great performances, but the other guy would be the one with the Oscar nomination, or the award. Gilbert Grape, Donnie Brasco, Blow, etc. etc.

460 I know this is quite something to ask, but is there someone out there with the skills, time and will to DITIGIZE all the book threads into one ebook?

Either made free or charge, or with proceeds to the Estate for his loved ones.

What do y'all think? This would immortalize the Book Threads.
Posted by: geewhiz at January 20, 2022 11:07 AM (aiyVR)

Just in case you missed it, the Book Thread is already digitized, as are the words you are reading right now. All you need to do is go to the archives, open each Book Thread in turn, and copy and paste to a document in your local machine (assuming you use a computer to read the HQ). Some of the external links might go dead, I guess. Add an index*, and you're done. Nothing stops you from doing this for yourself. If you want to make and distribute copies of the compilation, you need to seek permission from whoever holds the copyright.

*An index that contained titles of all books discussed, searchable by category would be really useful, and also quite a chore to make.

463 It's completely possible that I misunderstood the underlying message from Oregon Muse, but I don't think it was about "having a monkey in the pic".

Every time I'd scroll to Oregon Muse's Morning Rant, I would chuckle to myself, because it looked like "The 800 lb gorilla in the room is having his say."

I felt like it was kind of an inside joke. Nobody wants to talk about the 800 lb gorilla in the room, and here he is explaining the situation to everyone.

Maybe I'm off in left field, but that was always my impression. Just putting a picture of a monkey up there seems like a cheap knock-off. I don't want to be insulting, because I'm sure folks want to be respectful of his memory and pay homage to him. Magic creates a lot of problems for lazy story tellers. Its a get out of jail free card and gets boring if abused. Dr. Strange's ability to endlessly loop time in the last movie was a good example. That's a lot of power. Endlessly resurrecting yourself, and trapping everything else in space time in a repeating dungeon, unless they do what you want, kills a lot of narrative tension. Basically you get sent to your room unless you do what I say. Boring.

525 Just putting a picture of a monkey up there seems like a cheap knock-off. I don't want to be insulting, because I'm sure folks want to be respectful of his memory and pay homage to him. And I certainly didn't know him as a person, but my tummy tells me he'd rather you posted something that was meaningful to you, as opposed to just copying him.
Posted by: insurgens ad opus at January 20, 2022 12:04 PM (Zl0qV)

Yep, being a "cheap knockoff" was the joke. OM used to host the rant every weekday and then had to scale back for health reasons. Substitute cobs found monkey pics since they were subs and then kept them as their duties became permanent. I like them because we are maintaining the inside joke.

But, yes, it's certainly worth considering having a change in morning content, since the Rant was OM's thing.

526 It is not like Tony Stark was unfamiliar with unknown powers doing crazy things.

But there's not even a short scene where he goes THIS IS SCIENCE and then realizes its not. They don't even try. He just suddenly is all cool with science and best buds with Dr Strange because the plot required it.

And I love Bowfinger, one of my favorite movies from both Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy.

529 Recently watched a video on Koko, the allegedly talking gorilla. Its good for several reasons but the main draw for me was the examination of a scientists' obsession with a desired conclusion, manipulation of data, and how someone can fool the public who doesn't understand what they are doing.

TL;DR: Koko did not learn sign language and could not talk.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 20, 2022 12:13 PM (KZzsI)

Someone (I think it was Dave Barry) did a pretty good takedown of this a few years back.
Basically, Koko knew what Koko meant, and he used Kitty a lot when he was happy.

Rebecca Demornay standing in front of the refrigerator late at night getting milk out in a very sheer nighty was the moment you were supposed to understand what she was doing in 'Hand that Rocks the Cradle" and why she was reaching for milk. I kinda had to shift things around if you know what I mean. Yikes!

He spanked Keira Knightly quite firmly in a movie about Freud, recently.

Judging by the nip slip during the scene, she was quite enthused. I would suppose he was also feeling enthusiastic about his job.

546 460 Just in case you missed it, the Book Thread is already digitized, as are the words you are reading right now.

Hey AOP dude, what if something happens to this site? I'm talking about a way to immortalize the threads in perpetuity just in case, in a way that one doesn't have to click around just to get between each one. And by the way the POSTS themselves, not necessarily the BOOKS mentioned. And an 'ebook' version might be the best way to ensure the posts are readable and usable in their intended format.

What part of "pasting to a document in your local machine" do you not understand? That copies it off this site, and stores it on your hard drive. From there you could print it all if you so choose.

For the record, I think your idea has merit. I'm just trying to tell you that nothing stands in your way, other than getting copyright holders' permission, should you choose to distribute.
