Saturday Evening Movie Thread: A Man Called Pearl (2006) [movigique]

Hey, guys--

This is a "reprint" of a review from 2008, a documentary you might have missed (like "Finding Vivien Meier", covered a couple months ago), but I wanted to add a little foreword in memory of Oregon Muse.

For about 2 years until last September, OM took my HTML and formatted it (removing all the little black diamonds the hamsters don't like) and re-sized my pictures so they wouldn't wreck the margins--I had completely reversed the dimension requirements--as well as reminding me if I forgot to send the pictures, and doing the general sort of nitpicky stuff that keeps AOSHQ the well-oiled smart military blog it is.

If you've ever tried to negotiate that stuff, you know that it can get annoying fast, but OM was always patient and careful about getting things right, which is one of the best characteristics I can think of for anyone to have. (I've been doing my own uploads since about September, and I'm less patient with myself than he was.)

Anyway, I liked him a lot and I'm going to miss him.

Now, on to the review!
-----

The documentary-as-hagiography without a political end is a neglected genre.

I say this non-facetiously. A lot of people have done really cool things, and we don't really need to know about the not cool things they've done. We've all done the non-cool things, for the most part, and there's no point in letting that trivializing the good stuff.

Just an opinion, of course. Some of us do seem to enjoy a good wallow. And it's hard to imagine some documentaries, like Crumb or Bukowski - Born Into This without considerable examination of these men's flaws.

Pearl1.jpg
The Man of the Hour. The Hour of Flower Power. Or something.

But it’s nice to have a movie that’s along the lines of “Here’s a cool dude and here’s the cool stuff he’s done.” Exempli gratia, A Man Named Pearl. The only remote negativity is the ghost of racism, which is ameliorated by the fact that his current best friend is a white 40-something female museum curator.

Pearl Fryar bought a house nearly 25 years ago in Bishopville in South Carolina, not welcome in certain areas because, apparently, he wouldn’t keep his yard up. So, the marginally educated, 3 decade veteran of a can company bought his house elsewhere (with 3 acres of land! we who live in L.A. salute you!) and embarked on a horticultural journey which may ultimately have the effect of revitalizing his somewhat backward hometown.

Pearl2.jpg What's going on here? I don't know, but it's amazing!

First, he had no training, apart from a four-minute how-to on “bonsai”. Second, he builds his garden entirely with cast-offs from the local nursery. Third, he has plants thriving in his yard that really shouldn’t be. Fourth, he uses a hand chainsaw, which is totally inappropriate.

Most importantly, however, Pearl worked weekends–and nights, using a big lamp–for decades and turned his yard into a masterpiece.

And there’s your story.

It’s simple. It’s got lots of great pictures of sculpted bushes and trees, and Pearl Frayer working on them. It’s got his church group, a museum curator, the manager of the local Waffle House, and lots of kids talking about the inspiration the old guy gives them.

There’s a nice message about race relations, God, and the value of hard work–and the value of hard work doing something you love.

I confess, about 20 minutes in, I thought, “Oh, my God! It’s a real live magic negro!” But in that thought, I realize the problem with that stock character: Fryar isn’t magical, he just works his ass off. He’s not a saint, he’s just a really good role model. He’s actually a living example of why that stereotype is offensive.

pearl3.jpg
Bishopville's #1 Tourist Attraction, totally blowing away The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp

It’s a nice, hopeful movie with nice, hopeful people in it. It’s about ten minutes too long. Even at that, it’s hard to object too strongly.

And if the people of Bishopville work half as hard as Fryar does, they’re going to be all right.

This review is from 2008, before I had come up with my 3-point documentary scale. I've corrected the spelling of Mr. Fryar's name, fixed the broken links (the Internet is forever, but not usefully so), and added the pictures as well as the content below. (Also, I could refer to "the ghost of racism" with a straight face.)

  1. Subject matter: One man doing what he can is not the sort of epic material, e.g. Oscar likes to celebrate. In 2006, two of the documentary nominees were anti-Iraq-war, two others were anti-Christian, and the winner, of course, was the risible scaremongering propaganda, An Inconvenient Truth. Stuff like this is great in the way Rodney Smith Jr.'s "50 Yard Challenge" is great: It's unalloyed goodness that improves the world just by being there.

  2. Presentation: Plain as can be, but with lots of nice pictures of gardens.

  3. Slant. Yeah, it's a hagiography. And that's cool, man.

Unfortunately, Bishopville has continued to dwindle in the past 15 years since the documentary was made. I blame the Lizard Man.

pearl4.jpg
He got the lyrics to the song wrong, but I still don't see what's so funny about it.

80 ||Are those movies you're going to watch or movies that are going to come out?||

Some I just saw, some have just been released.

|| Because I'll give a hard pass to any Kingsman entry.||

"Kingmaker" is a Korean political thriller. They're kind of hard to follow but they also don't hate me, so.

|| I'm also sick of seeing the ads for the silly Jennifer Lopez flick Marry Me. ||

I passed a single bus-station ad for it on my way home from "Belle" and I said to the kids, "I THINK FIFTY IS A LITTLE OLD TO BE PLAYING BLUSHING BRIDES, JLO."

Heck, even almost 29 is kind of pushing it.

82 73 I finally saw "Nomadland", director Chloe Zhao's flick starring Frances McDormand as a widow who leaves her shuttered company town and travels in her van taking odd jobs. It's a very laid back story. I enjoyed it a lot.

I feel sorry for Zhao for being offered a superhero movie that bombed. This was a good documentary-style film but there was nothing in it that screamed BIG LOUD CROWD-PLEASER.

90 While I was resting from snow shoveling this morning (spoiler: my snowblower still won't turn over), I passed out on the couch and watched the 1918 Pola Negri movie Eyes of the Mummy. You'd think, with that title, that it was some Egyptian horror/ suspense movie, but it isn't. Negri plays a dancing girl who wins the heart of a rich Englishman and marries him, but is followed (and eventually killed) by Radu, an Arab who has sworn revenge on her for deserting him.

I like it. You probably wouldn't.

There are so many movies from the before times that seem pointless now. It was a superhero movie deconstruction before the REALLY insane popularity of superheroes in movies took off. It was from a time before comics were dead woke wastelands. Came off as mean spirited and trying to be hip and edgy.

191 The Criterion Channel is playing a lot of Hitchcock this month, so -

last night I watched Hitchcock's remake of his own movie, "The Man Who Knew Too Much".

It stars Doris Day and Jimmy Stewart.

Man, does it start out great, and keeps getting better until the climax/resolution. They sort of wrote themselves into a corner and to get out of it they go all Hollywood corny. Spoiler!: Doris Day's singing saves the day!

However, Doris Day was great as the Mom of the kidnapped kid. And Holy Cow did she look like the perfect sweet, pretty American farm/country girl.

I have no idea what she was like in real life. But she looked like the sort of girl you'd dream about meeting back in the 50s. No wonder she had a successful Hollywood career. In her case, looks really were destiny.

205 I've been digging into a box set of the Our Gang silent films. Amazing how much cleverness and creativity came out of The Hal Roach Studios. Next year will mark the 100-year anniversary of Our Gang's debut, and there's just something I dig about laughing uproriously at nearly hundred-year old films. Humor changes with time, but some things remain the same.

In the best Petey film ever, the remarkable and hilarious "Dog Heaven" (1927) the famous ring-eyed dog attempts to commit suicide (!) after being falsely accused of jealously pushing a little girl, guest star Annette de Kirby, into a river after she steals the attentions of his owner, original fat boy Joe Cobb away from him.

After being saved from hanging by a dog friend, Petey spills out his sad story, culminating in the distraught pittie hanging out drinking all day in dog bars with the wrong type of dog. In the end, Petey is absolved and all live happily ever after. It's a truly bizarre yet funny film that is clever as can be.

The cleanest version on Youtube seems to be the same print that I have on the boxset, but with a non-original jazz soundtrack:

It's kind of funny you should say that.

Back in the day, one of the reasons for blackface--it's a very nuanced subject despite what you may hear--was that certain styles of music, particularly highly emotional ones, were seen as not acceptable for white performers but okay for black ones.

A white man couldn't sing a "mammy" song but, if he wore blackface, it was acceptable.

It constantly calls attention to the fact that we are watching fakey fakeyness. And impairs the suspension of disbelief which is essential to movies, plays, novels, etc.

Not that any of the Black actors were bad or anything like that, but it made about as much sense to have Blacks in Medieval Scotland as it would to have Robert Pattison play Kunta Kinte in the new remake of "Roots".

Surprisingly, Denzel is just okay in it.

He gives a Donut Performance. He starts out okay. He ends excellently but the middle is hollow.

I don't know if he didn't quite get a handle on Macbeth's changes or the fact that the movie cuts out abut half of the original play doesn't give Denzel enough meat to fill out the role.
That said, really all the movie really wants to be is the film noir/Universal Monster/German Expressionist horror version of Macbeth.
It looks fabulous.

356 347 There's a great documentary with William Friedkin being interviewed about the making of The Exorcist. Apparently, Sydow was having problems at one point and Friedkin asked what was up and Sydow said he didn't know how to do the scene because he didn't believe in God.

Wonder what he is thinking now?

367 Re: Greatest Story Ever Told...

Not until The Passion did the person of Jesus ever seem played as remotely human and relatable. Every other depiction of the Gospels I've seen has been over the top in production or everyone playing their parts as caricatures or Jesus as this untouchable, mystical being.

The best thing I've seen has been that crowdfunded series: The Chosen. Now into shooting their third season, it's a really good, Biblical rendition of Jesus' ministry, and the way they depict the disciples is wonderfully human. There are many places where the writers have filled in the gaps, but they've done it in the most respectful way, it's quite something. And they aren't trying to stuff everything into two hours, so they can take their time with character development.

The second season ends with the Sermon on the Mount, and I believe they are hoping to do seven seasons. Very well worth the time.

Yeah, Jay & Mike hedged on that being some kind of statement, because the whole movie is some kind of statement, to which I say, well, I guess I can admire that, but I don't wanna see it.

387 As a play, I like the tight, taught structure of Macbeth. It's Shakespeare with all the fat trimmed off. Lean and mean. Perhaps a bit too much so, as I concur with the general criticism that we needed a bit more development of Lady Macbeth and then Macbeth himself turning to the dark side. I like the Witches. Love the banquet scene. Macduff's gut-wrenching grieving scene when he learns that his family has been slaughtered is Shakespeare at his absolute best.

It's not one of my top Bard plays but I can see why it's so popular. It's consiceness and relative simplicity of language made it one of the most popular Shakkespeare plays taught in American high schools which is where I first read it.

My wife read the book and was very excited when the movie came out. I don't usually feel dragged to movies, but oy-vey. It was like two hours of post-apocalyptic Murphy's Law. It just got worse and worse and worse. And then at the end, when you think, "Oh dear god in heaven -- finally, some glimmer of ho--" KA-BLAM!!! And then it ends.

If you're on antidepressants, avoid this film at all costs.

Posted by: moviegique at January 29, 2022 09:55 PM (asXVI)

Not sure.

Polanski's version is 140 min versus the Coen's at 105 minutes.

Thirty-five minutes is a lot of time in a movie or play for character development or plot elucidation.

So, big differences right there.

401 I think Spike Lee coined the phrase, or maybe popularized it.

The linked Wiki article says Lee indeed popularized it. Leading to a critic describing Whoopi Goldberg in "Ghost" as a "Magical Negress". Which is extra hilarious in light of her antics on the View.

402 || Leading to a critic describing Whoopi Goldberg in "Ghost" as a "Magical Negress".

I'd probably disagree with that. I mean, she was, literally a magical negress, but the "Magical Negro" is so much more than that.

403 The only Shakespeare movie I've ever seen that really manages to capture almost the entire play, Much Ado About Nothing, was made by the supreme asshole Joss Whedon.

Whedon made/was involved in some great stuff. "The Cabin In The Woods" is fantastic.

In hindsight, Dr. Horrible is more autobiographical than he likely intended though.

404 However, Doris Day was great as the Mom of the kidnapped kid. And Holy Cow did she look like the perfect sweet, pretty American farm/country girl.

I have no idea what she was like in real life. But she looked like the sort of girl you'd dream about meeting back in the 50s. No wonder she had a successful Hollywood career. In her case, looks really were destiny.
