Saturday Chess Project Thread

Hello Saturday afternoon peeps! Wow, it's bright out here . What do you daywalkers call that big orange thing in the sky?

We were all tremendously excited to hear that Oregon Muse is recovering, but it will be a bit before he's able to resume his COB duties. Please continue to keep him and his family in your prayers.

I'm still covering the chess thread, but I'm going to be honest with y'all. The past two weeks exhausted even my pretend knowledge and silliness on the subject. I just don't have the knowledge, so I'm going to have to shelve the subject until OM is ready to resume writing the thread. I fervently hope that this is soon, but probably not as fervently as those of y'all who, you know, enjoy chess and dresses.

I don't have a theme in mind, but today I thought I'd talk about my big winter project. Be warned, however, that I'm not at the Alberta Oil Peon level. No, I'm more at this guy's level.

Saw table.jpg

When we moved to this house a year and a half ago, it came with a nice big garden. The plot is 33' X 42', and last year I tilled it up and planted a conventional garden. Initially, it looked very nice.

FJLDq-OXMAMsW5k.jpg

However, mid summer we went away for a week, we all caught Covid and the next 3 weeks were rainy. I basically ignored the garden for a month, except for picking the occasional vegitable to eat, and the weeds went nuts. I mean, they got away from me fast. By the end of the summer the garden looked like this:

FJLDq-NWYAYQ383.jpg

Actually, it looked a lot worse, that's just the last picture I took.

So, anyway, I did what any red blooded American male would do: I burned it. I took a propane torch and burned the field right down to the dirt. I decided that my winter project was going to be to make raised beds. And quite a lot of them too. The space will hold 20 4 X 8 beds, with 3' paths in between for access. The challenge was going to be making the beds without spending a fortune. I wanted to use barn tin, of which Texas has an abundance, but the problem is that everyone thinks they're Martha Stewart and that lovely old rusted barn tin will make just the cutest accent wall, so what should sell for not much is going for more than lumber. It's nuts. I finally scored 8 26” X 12' sheets for $100, enough for 8 beds.

FJLD-QdWUAIxb0I.jpg

I've built 2 of them so far, here's the result:

FJLDzIkWQAIwihY.jpg

The chicken wire in the bottom is to prevent burrowing animals from coming up and eating my root crops. I made one bed out of 2X8s, you can see it in the background of the above picture, but lumber is dear now. That one bed cost $60 in materials! I needed another solution.

What I finally settled on was pickets. They're cheep, under $2 each, and at 6' X 5 ½ inches they're the right size for the job. The only thing is that they require a joint on the long side, but that's not too big of a deal. They're also perfect for making potato towers (foreground).

FJLDzQiWUAMhPPd.jpg

The corner posts I'm using were repurposed from shipping container supports. You can see the groove where the straps would go.

And that's my winter project this year. I'm about halfway done, yesterday I had 15 CY of bedding dirt delivered and this morning we were filling up the beds. Pro tip: Have a friendly neighbor who owns a tractor with a frontloader, it makes the job so much easier.

FJLDrWNXwAIAQts.jpg

There's more than enough beds completed for my frost hardy crops, which go in next month, and I have until April to finish the rest, but I plan on finishing sooner. When I get to the actual planting and growing, maybe I'll ask KT if I can write a guest garden thread. It'll be like old times, that's what I started on here at the wonderful AoSHQ!

So what project do y'all have in the hopper?

Open thread.

62 What Ben Had is referring to is that good garden soil is usually acidic and while galvanized is somewhat protected, eventually the acid in the soil wins. Unlike rain which is momentary, wet acidic material next to even galvanized steel will eventually rust and given the thinness of the steel--will rust clean through like a steel birdbath.

Rubber coating might slow down the process but introduce chemicals. That is why, for the most part, people use cedar or similar rot resistant wood for veggie planters. For flowers, pressure treated will do.

Posted by: Ben Had at January 15, 2022 05:37 PM (7piqi)

97 78 Braenyard, I have used landscape timbers for decorative beds, most have pressure treatment which makes it problematic for consumable plants.

Depending on the rain level where you are, you can add things like french drains, landscape fabric interiors, and so on. I have found landscape timbers, at best, last about a decade in my climate. PT ground contact 4x4's about 15. Six by Six, about 20-25 years. The position, the soil acidity, whether you have inbuilt french drains, etc. can vary that a bit on lifetime.

Old railroad ties with creosote last almost indefinitely but have been a vector of Formosan termites in the South recently. Best to avoid them now. Pretty much using mansonry for new projects or natural rock.

102 Thanks for the laugh, WeirdDave.

My projects from the summer were a series of ARs all milled from 80% lowers.

I've done 3 AR-Pistols with 10.5" barrels chambered in 300BLK. I'm getting ready to do a fourth once I complete my AR-9 lower that's currently taking up the jig.

Just prior to this, I did my first LR-308 from an 80%, and chambered it in .308 Winchester. I leaned heavily toward 6.5 Grendel, but the 220 gr pill I use to load my 300BLK is the same one for the 308 Win. So, it was a choice of economy in the long run.

Plus, the silencer I bought for my 300BLK builds was originally designed for 308 Win, and it's a QD on a fairly inexpensive flash hider, so it swaps to all my builds (except the AR-9).

The first two 80%s I did I only had a hand drill. It took hours of back-aching work just to drill the pilot hole, but they came out really well. By the middle of summer I picked up a drill press and now it's a 15 minute process.

115 96, Ben Had, yes in a fashion. Much of my terracing landscaping projects were done on a relatively hilly slopes of my yard and to stop erosion. So, the projects themselves are sloped with a slight downgrade and a rock (using paver foundation/pea gravel) layer enclosed by landscape fabric drain at the the lowest points of the walls/planters/etc. Same for potted plants as it can help prevent root rot in potted/enclosed planters by aiding drainage.

The HRT has multiple deployments every year The vast majority of which are never publicized, at least not their involvement.

In the LEO community they're well known as a shoot first, fuck the questions team.

It has often been speculated that that is a deliberate policy in many missions, to eliminate embarrassments and ensure things stay off or drop off the radar...

If it has already been acknowledged that the HRT is on scene then you can be sure that policy decisions have already been made. Possibly not in the hostages favor. They are an instrument of policy, not necessarily a force for good.

145 116 Infidel,
Depending on what you are planting and the depth required, the type of rain that you get (torrential downpours versus gentle), etc., you can always front the cheap ugly concrete blocks with an attractive wood facade, steel etc.

If not for consumable plants, 4x4's or landscape timbers that are staked and crossed can make retaining wall planters up to 16 inches tall in the right places for not a whole lot of money, tools, or requirements for placement. To prolong the actual planter wood's life, use cheap, thin, pt 2x4's as the top of the 4x4 or landscape timbers as a top to delay rot of the actual structure.

If you use the natural slopes as the backdrop, you can get away with using three sided 4x4 walls.

I'm one cryptid behind right now thanks to getting sidetracked by a Christmas stitch project.

I usually have several projects going. Currently I'm restoring a Victorian crazy quilt. The antique dealer I frequent often gets old textiles and in this case I bought a few pieces of antique embroidered silk to replace the deteriorated sections (small) of the quilt. The lot I purchased was quite nice and included an old shaving kit with wrapped blades from the Transvaal and Pre-Soviet Russia. This lot was very nice for restoration

When my last aunt passed I inherited a large collection of vintage yarn. I just completed a long draping shawl from an acetate yarn that looks like gold chains and is brighter than anything I've seen in many years

Get yourself and a five gallon container to the gas station and buy some diesel. It's the same product as heating oil, except you get to pay the highway tax. Here in PA it's $4.00 a gallon. Run too low and you'll clog your nozzle with debris and get a huge bill to replace a $5.00 nozzle.

Somebody in a Western film or novel named his horse "Vinegaroon." Maybe the horse was black.

John Wayne and Kirk Douglas in The War Wagon, the 1967 Western heist film, is on Grit right now. JW's sequel to True Grit, Rooster Cogburn (which I've never seen all the way through), was on earlier, and I think the remake of TG is scheduled for later tonight.

Grit is an odd channel. It runs a lot of Western B-pics, the Audie Murphy/Joel McCrea level of films; and then suddenly they'll have the original TG, Hondo, and The Searchers on a JW evening.

266 Thanks for sharing, CN! That Victorian quilt sounds really cool. One of my aunts loves quilting. She pieced together a crazy quilt for me from fabric scraps my grandmother left behind when she passed. (My grandmother had already done most of the work, so my aunt basically just finished it.) It's rarely cold enough for that quilt, unfortunately, but it's still one of my prized possessions.

Dad would always yell at us to fill the car when the tank was at 1/2. And he'd say don't just put $5 in it, Fill It Up, Dummy!

I was always calling for an oil delivery at a 1/2 tank, but then it occurred to me that I should burn off that old fuel oil instead of just mixing new fuel with it.

Plus, filling an empty oil tank will agitate some of the sludge on the bottom of the tank. ALGAE will develop on the bottom of an oil tank and cause Corrosion. The more you know...

When planted with the right varieties, you can basically get something like fresh tomatoes for a whole growing season. Some other plants do well in those type of container gardens as well.

They say that the POTATUS has been briefed. Which is clearly a lie, but nonetheless, the only way that they could have a briefing of any content or of actionable material is if this was planned in advance by the same people who run all of the other FBI ops and false flags.

In this case, the guy is well known to the FBI/DHS or whoever the hell is supposed to run these guys, so likely if the guy is a cell that is off his meds and the Boys have other plans for him, then expect the FBI to send their team in to Epstein the guy out of there for his own safety.

There was a USMC MAJ in Iraq that wrote a paper urging murderous return fire towards combatants - even when they were screened by hostages. His theory was that organizing and managing hostages was a major chore for the bad guys that would pan out to be useless if ignored and therefore, as a tactic, would go away after a few groups of innocents where killed along with the bad guys.

417 Electric water heater tip - turn it off, let the water cool, turn the water input off - there is an anode rod screwed into the top of the heater, unscrew and take out the anode rod.

Attach a water hose to the drain spigot at the bottom of the heater, drain the heater leaving approx. 5 gallons in the tank.

Pour in two gallons of 9% distilled white vinegar, wait two hours then open the spigot and drain. Then add 5 gallons to the tank and drain again. Repeat this until the drain water is clear.

If you have a couple of dollars extra replace the anode. Disconnect the hose, close the spigot, fill the tank with water, turn the heater on and you have a clean, happy water heater.

Cedar fence posts are fine and fence pickets are too as side boards--a lot of what you see inside big box merchants is for decorative purposes and are a bit soft for ground exposure. The dimensional stuff like 4x4 or 6x6 or planks may or may not hold up outdoors. Talk to a lumber guy inside the warehouse during the week.

Gardeners dot com also has complete premade planter kits including cedar options.

Bamboo planters is also something that is long lasting in wet climates.

Top of tank was excavated. Top of tank cut off. Filled with water and detergent. Pumped out. Rinse and repeat. Test for contamination. Clean. Drill holes in bottom. Fill with sand. Bury and forget. (actually location was on a register closed as decon'd and abandoned in place).

485 One cheap way to make a garden retaining wall is with used concrete block. Find a spot where a strip mall is being bulldozed -- shouldn't be hard -- and they're free. You won't be mortaring them in place, so you don't have to chisel off much of the old. Lay them in a bond pattern, and drive a few re-rod stakes inside the cells, up against the inside wall, to keep them from walking around. Unless you're going to use a heavy gas tiller inside, they won't shift. To keep this all from looking like hell, mix up some mortar and lime in a bucket and use a big old fat tar brush to slop on a stucco facing. It will look like stone when it cures. For cutesy, you can put potting soil in the individual block cells and plant posies.
