28 I love this. This is a wonderful scene. I am adding it to my short list of prints to try to acquire. I have no idea where to put it, but I want it.

What I find interesting at first glance is that the boy and girl appear to have equal levels of (dis)interest in the man's work. It's just an errand they're running. This is *not* how it would have been for me. I'd be in the sister's position (physically), fascinated by the machinery and peppering the man with questions about how it all worked. Bluntly, I'd be a nuisance but I'd learn about how that machine worked and why.

I can't imagine a little boy standing by disinterestedly and just passively watching such a thing. It's a lovely scene but that bit of personal unreality makes it particularly interesting to me.

Fascinating! I've never heard that variation. I grew up with the Jewish version, which is similar. In the version with which I am familiar, knives must *never* be given nor received as gifts. The reason for this is that if you do so, the knife may later sever the relationship and result in alienation. I was always taught (and I do it to this day) that when giving a knife, you include with it a nickle or dime or quarter, which will reimburse the recipient for the nickle or dime or quarter that he has to immediately give you in payment for the gift. If he doesn't have small change on him, he will come back to you a bit later with the coin you gave him - after having mysteriously discovered that he did indeed have a coin after all.

125 > It is hard to believe the ways people used to make a living.

Did some web searching and found an account from a guy whose father was a knife grinder. He covered a very large area on foot. Normally he would ask to sleep in fire stations, in return for sharpening the station kitchen's knives. He'd get a meal in return for sharpening a restaraunt's knives. And so on. Probably haircuts for sharpening a barber's gear (it didn't say that, but it seems reasonable). Free medical care for sharpening scalpels?

It wasn't a life of luxury, I'm sure.

136 I'm going to watch some YouTube vids of knife sharpening this weekend and then try my hand at it again. One thing I personally think makes a difference is the quality of the blade in question. Some just don't appear to want to take an edge no matter what. Others will, but the edge dulls after a few cuts.

Case in point; my wife has a paring knife she loves. It's dull. I can't do a thing with it.

All the attic-cleaning slammed to a halt as my brothers and I started going through it. We all had spent many, many hours fishing with my dad. Every lure, every rod and reel told a story.

We divided everything up, and among my take I got his old "carborundum" shapening stone, early-70s vintage, in its original leather pouch. I'm positive it would still work, as carborundum is pretty much indestructible, but I like to keep it as is.

My dad bought me an electric sharpener for Christmas one year. It has 2 stage sharpening stones that rotate quickly. There's a magnet on each side of the stones making it near impossible to screw up since it holds the blade at the proper angle to sharpen the edge.

Good call.

huckster (n.)
c. 1200, "petty merchant, peddler" (often contemptuous), from Middle Dutch hokester "peddler," from hoken "to peddle" (see hawk (v.1)) + agent suffix -ster (which was typically feminine in English, but not in Low German). Specific sense of "advertising salesman" is from 1946 novel by Frederick Wakeman. As a verb from 1590s.

Over his decades in politics, he has constructed a mythical persona full of tall tales of derring-do, exaggerations and outright lies about his accomplishments. He lied about nonexistent academic awards and scholarships and plagiarized speeches willy-nilly.

242 I see a lot of commenters discussing the contractor mandate status in connection with the split Scotus decisions on the OSHA and CMS (healthcare) mandates yesterday.

So, this is my quick take fwiw, the narrow alliance that allowed the CMS mandate to stand relied upon the CMS administrator's power to regulate health industry practices and used past healthcare practices such as mandating washing hands, etc. that even the plaintiff Missouri admitted were acceptable. So, the CMS mandate was looked upon as non-exceptionable given that providers have accepted micro management via CMS dictates over time including emergency regulations.

Broadly speaking, there was no such precedent for OSHA issuing health care mandates for diseases for most of the economy using emergency standards. So, the legal questions to ponder does the Labor Dept.'s regularly mandate health requirements in contracts? What is the extent of those mandates? What is the degree of coercive power of the government regarding contractors and sub-contractors regarding their worker's health and is this concern within the Labor Department's purview of contracts.

Come to think of it, Fridays are sort of meaningless, as I've learned that "retirement" merely means more time to do stuff around the house.

The major department stores here left that to Woolworth's. There was an actual pet store in the French Quarter for a bunch of years, a clean place where you could buy a puppy or a kitten. And I dimly recall a shop of some kind on Burgundy Street where the owner had a parrot. I can't remember if it was a pet store or not.

Our first kitten, when I was 12, came from a lady Mom used to chat with at the laundry. The upstairs neighbors -- who would have squealed to the landlord -- had just moved out and a sensible guy had moved in, so she moved fast to adopt a cat. She hadn't had one since we moved to that apartment.

I recommend Russell knives (formerly Russell/Dexter). You can get them at a restaurant supply store - they're the white-handled knives that restaurants use so often. They hold an edge great, are pretty easy to sharpen, and last forever. Restaurants use them for a reason. They're not beautiful knives - they're purpose built for cutting.

293 So, contract compliance is not my bailiwick and that is more a question for contractors whether this is a standard practice or not.

But, remember, the Court will avoid constitutional arguments if existing precedents on the agency's statutory and regulatory power applies in the areas that it regulates on a regular basis. That makes it in effect harder to challenge via judges raised on judicial restraint doctrines. Since the 1940's, liberals celebrated judicial activism on rights, conservatives in response celebrated judicial restraint regarding political rights.

So, now that the liberals want to restrain individual rights, that is no problem for their activist judges but Republican appointed judges, by and large, come from a restraint background with the occasional natural rights libertarian judge getting appointed. Judicial restraint calls for minimal decisions, deference to political branches on crises, and avoiding broader constitutional questions if possible to resolve a case. So, the legacy of restraint judges is to avoid questions of constitutional rights if at all possible, deference to political and administrative expertise, and try to resolve cases narrowly.

296 A delightful, peaceful painting. The scene is gentle and the muted colors and quiet poses of the children emphasize that. Even the one activity, the knife sharpener, is understood to be slow and deliberate. It is very effective.

When I was very young our small town had an old guy (probably about my age now) who went up and down the residential streets with a wheeled cart similar to the one in the painting, calling to bring out knives. He could put a razor edge on kitchen knives in short order. I never knew if this was a hobby for him, continuing an old tradition, but he knew what to do. That ended back in the late 1950s. I wasn't the only kid who stood there, fascinated like the kids in the painting, watching him work his magic.

That is a nice memory. Between that knife sharpener and my grandfather's similar skill, I wonder if that is where my interest in sharp, well-maintained tools came from.

Baseball trivia time: Way back when, a sports reporter, don't remember his name, was trying to look for a short hand way to record the action on the field. He came up with a system of numbering the player positions, so he could record the action in a timely manner. Hence the advent of the 6,4,3 double play.

Posted by: DoublySymmetric (iPad)

Roberts is a political justice masked as a judicial restraint proponent concerned about his legacy. Warren Burger was another such as was CJ Stone. They are generally failures and produce turmoil on the courts by trying to manufacture decisions. Thus, Robert's sudden switch in time to hold Obamacare constitutional but via an idiosyncratic taxing argument that was not properly before the court. It is actually a violation of judicial restraint to try to 'save' a law by inventing a new argument sua sponte. Ditto for ignoring the lack of a saving clause in the Obamacare law that preserves constitutional provisions while discarding unconstitutional ones.

I can give other examples but Roberts is a stealth political judge masked as a judicial restraint proponent.

Gorsuch, like Kennedy, comes more from a natural law perspective which is less concerned with precedent and more 'justice'. This is a double edged sword as remember Gorsuch gave a tortured reading of the Civil Rights Act to include transexuals and more recently overturned over one century of precedent in an Oklahoma case regarding state and native American status in state courts versus tribal courts. Kennedy, of course, became the gay marriage advocate.

Posted by: Darrell Harris

Gorsuch, like Kennedy, comes more from a natural law perspective which is less concerned with precedent and more 'justice'. This is a double edged sword as remember Gorsuch gave a tortured reading of the Civil Rights Act to include transexuals and more recently overturned over one century of precedent in an Oklahoma case regarding state and native American status in state courts versus tribal courts. Kennedy, of course, became the gay marriage advocate.

I guess I basically agree with this but there's an aspect of Roberts "politics" that seems very much concerned (overly so) with "legitimacy" of the Court as an institution rather than left/right policy outcomes per se. But since the pressure/threat to Court is mostly from the Left, this works out to him caving to (or finding ways to agree with) the Left. Ramping up pressure from the Right on the Court might be the best way to move Roberts back to center-right.

Well, leftist judges argue that they do just that via activism. For the most part, I find leftist judges have little or no compunction in overruling precedent, ignoring limits or instituting limits on government agencies depending on who is suing, trashing rules on standing, collusive suits, and so on. For the left, the role for law is to explain power relationships, not for general applicability or even stability.

The right is splintered on this. Libertarians, statists, and political justices, which is why there is never a united front on the right. For example, Republican justices like Chief Justice Hughes or Taft were quite comfortable limiting free speech, supporting government unchecked power, etc. as long as large business practices were not affected. Holmes started out as a statist but soon became a libertarian on speech. Not so on other issues such as Buck v. Bell.
