Daily Tech News 13 January 2022

  • My Lenovo Tab M8 FHD arrived, and despite some listing weirdness (Amazon has it as a "business laptop" running ChromeOS) it is actually the right thing.

Since it's currently the only small Android tablet with a high resolution screen, and at A$234 including international shipping and taxes it's reasonably priced - less than a third of the cheapest iPad Mini - if it works well I'll buy a second one.

Lenovo has an 8.8" gaming tablet in the works, but nothing showed up at CES so it could be some way off. Samsung's latest small tablet only has a resolution of 1340x800 which is barely better than the 2012 Nexus 7.

  • Why you can't hire engineers. (GitHub)

    Probability 1: Your company sucks.

Probability 2: Everything else sucks, so even though they are actively looking for a new job because their current company sucks, you need to work twice as hard just to convince them that your company might suck less.

Probability 3: Someone at your company installed Node.js without your knowledge, and now it looms over your headquarters like a great looming thing.

Only thing I don't like is it uses the older micro USB connector and not USB-C, but that's a minor problem up until the connector breaks and it stops charging.

Posted by: Skip at January 13, 2022 04:41 AM (2JoB8)

22 It was the "Progressives" who ushered in the direct election of Senators in the first place. Prior to about 1913, US Senators were selected by the state legislators, basically.

The House of Representatives was designed and intended for direct election. The founders never intended the Senators to be directly elected. Now it can be argued there were some problems with the way things were headed at the time, but basically simply converting the Senators to "super duper" congressmen wasn't the answer.

Leftists of course hate the US Senate with only slightly less passion than the Electoral College. Maybe more actually, but they recognize the order in which things need to be performed in order to takedown the American system.

Posted by: m at January 13, 2022 05:02 AM (vF+oW)

26 Mornin', all,

I too have the interrupted sleep issue. A melatonin before bed and no coffee after noon usually handles it fairly well. If I need it, a single diphenhydramine, the "sleep-aid" stuff sold over-the-counter, keeps me asleep until the alarm goes off.

It'll be a long day today: work, then my writing group this evening. I probably will not get to bed until 10 pm. I'll have time to feed Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat his dinner and pill, and give him the liquid prednisone, before I leave tonight. He's doing okay. I thought he might be improving a bit from his injections, but if he is, it's not lasting long.

28 My Life, I once accidentally cut out caffeine and regretted it. For some reason I stopped having coffee on Sundays. By the next morning I had a terrible crashing thumping headache that refused to go away until noontime. I could not figure out what was different about the Mondays vs. other days of the week: I no longer drank, I liked my job, etc. Finally I realized and started coffee again on Sundays, and no more trouble.

Now, when a hurricane portends, I make some coffee in advance and tuck it into a bottle in the refrigerator. If the power goes out and I can't brew fresh, I still have caffeine. Once the emergency is over, I can heat it in the microwave or drink it iced.

How much do you have daily? Seems cutting back would make the monkey a little smaller

Posted by: a dude in MI at January 13, 2022 05:13 AM (+I6Y/)

30 Wolfus, in the summer I make a full pot of extra strong coffee and refrigerate it for iced coffee. Mmmmmm.

I had to go cold turkey no caffeine when i started chemo. At the time, I had my sewing business and was also working a 3rd shift job. Basically 3 hours of sleep a day. No caffeine was tough at 1st but after chemo was over, I stuck to it for about 6 years. Then one day I realized how much I missed coffee and now I'm (mostly) only 2 cups a day.

Since there doesn't seem to be a standard about cup size, I'm not sure. I have 3-4 small cups in the morning before and with breakfast, and maybe 3 spread out over the morning at work. But I can't say how many ounces. I wasn't drinking that much back when I had the mysterious issue with the headaches (I'm talking 1989, now).

I've tried mixing it half and half with decaf, and that's okay, but decaf costs more, and I'd have to buy 2 packets at once.

33 I'm not going without caffeine, not voluntarily. Are you nuts? Freeze-dried is actually not a very good substitute in that regard. Not sure why. It is better, to be sure than nothing. Withdrawal symptoms may be an issue even when freeze-dried is available.

Tea is OK in the afternoon. It won't leave one wired in the evening. Not so good in the morning, when caffeine is necessary to become ambulatory, it just doesn't do the trick for me.

I find that I like the idea of Tea, but in practice, it just tastes vaguely of yard waste and is at best but an inferior substitute for Coffee.

Most men get heart attacks in the morning. Your body becomes dehydrated as you sleep. Caffeine has diuretic properties that cause further dehydration.

Therefor caffeinated coffee causes heart attacks.

True dat. I drink coffee from the time I wake up till approximately 1 or 2 in the afternoon. This usually results in about one full pot each day. I find that in the evening, I end up drinking a couple of quarts of water.

Fleming had James Bond say, "I hate tea. It's mud. Furthermore it's the main reason for the downfall of the British Empire."

As for dehydration, while the coffee brews in the morning, I drink a large glass of water first, and water when I get up from a nap on the weekends. I have been drinking some hot green tea the last few weeks on Saturday and Sunday afternoons post-nap, but when the packets are gone, I may or may not buy more. The hot stuff is great to drink in cooler weather -- but that will be gone in less than 2 months.

The article I read was referring to 'hemp products' as the source for their testing. Which are supposed to be less than ~3% THC. So hemp based tinctures or vapes might provide the protection without the risk of coming up hot on a drug test. Or it might all be bullshit like just about everything nowadays.

Well maybe, but they are in 3rd countries that Israel is trying to have relations with and it would be "political" to kill them there or risk civilian casualties from that 3rd country.

94 86 But it isn't sold in Australia and has a low-resolution screen. If I was willing to settle for a display from a decade ago I'd have plenty of choices.

Display resolution is something I'm really picky about. I've reluctantly settled for 4k for my desktop displays. The laptop I'm typing on right now has a 4k screen. For an 8" tablet I really want a 2560x1600 screen, but right now there aren't any. (Though there have been in the past.)

I don't know. But I found this observation the other day:

With enforcement of the OSHA standard due to start on Jan. 10, 2022, the court may issue a rapid decision, or it could provide a temporary stay. A third option is to simply do nothing and allow the vaccine mandate to take effect.

In a sane world where the donks and civil service did not view Covid as a positive because it is an "I win!" button for GloboHomo you would be correct.

SCotUS would expect Joey Plugz to "take the win" and reassert normalcy-the issue is the donks hate "normalcy" which is a successful prosperous America so their motives are not sane ones.

Imagine spending your life worshipping government as an infallible deity and then realizing that:

a) CDC funded the plague

and

b) the US government in its wild overreaction committed about 150 million violations of the Nuremburg protocols...

it would take a great moral and ethical resolve to look that beast in the mirror so consequently we get the nonsensical hysterics and the cowardice about saying "no" to the regulatory state.

SCotUS will probably side with Plugz consequently.

122 I thought Bond's health cure at Shrublands was amusing and fasinating, as Fleming put him on an "abstemious" regime of tea and vegetable concoctions and he emerged feeling like a new man. But it didn't last long, as danger soon sent him back to his old indulgent habits.
Posted by: Ordinary American at January 13, 2022

Yep, back to the old Chesterfields (though I think Bond said they had the lowest nicotine of any American brand?) and Kentucky bourbon. Bond was, if you believe John Pearson in Authorized Biography, about 41 years old at the time of the Thunderball story -- kind of old for a Double-0 to still be in the field, by the details Fleming gave us in an earlier book. Of course nobody else M had could come close to him for sheer effectiveness, I guess.

These acids from hemp act as cell entry inhibitors and could be used to prevent Covid-19 infections and even shorten infections by preventing virus particles from infecting human cells.

I grew up with the novels; they were the first "grownup" books I ever read, at least in part. At age 9 I was mostly concerned with the action scenes, of course. My mother started me on them by handing me the "venomous centipede in Bond's bed" scene in Doctor No, and I was hooked. Mom didn't want me to read them at that age, so I sneaked quick reads.

I went from the Hardy Boys and Superman comics to Bond, and then to Rex Stout and Ellery Queen. Completely bypassed a lot of young people's lit.

Likewise. Fleming was an underrated writer. He knew exactly his limits and worked within them with inimitable style and effect. Pearson's book is a lot of fun and he is marvelous at teasing out stories from the allusive tidbits in the novels.

135 If you use a 8" tablet primarily as an ebook reader like I do, consider a used Asus Zenpad Z8s available on eBay for $40-80. Screen resolution is significantly better at 2048x1536 (has any 8" tablet been higher?) than the Lenovo M8 FHD, weight is one (1) gram heavier than the Lenovo at 306 gram. Slightly larger but slightly thinner (6.9mm vs 8.2mm). 3GB/16 GB memory. Android level seems to have maxed out at 7.0, but I haven't yet run into a problem. Works a treat for me, I may have to acquire a backup!
