Oh yeah, I do like these paintings: wonderful detail well executed, brilliant colors that offset the delicate, if idealized, skin tones, and the quasi-classical themes. (The nude women in his works show that 'comfortable' female look of the 1700s with a bit of flesh instead of skin over bone current today.)
There is so much to observe in this and similar style paintings. They must be spectacular to see in person. BTW, his Wiki page has some great crayon images he did for models. Worth a look to see what can be accomplished with simple materials. Posted by: JTB at January 11, 2022 09:40 AM (7EjX1) 68

Sure. Wash your hands, cover your cough. But don't expect me to lock myself in the house when I get a cold. I am not indifferent to your recent illness. If you are at higher risk, you have to take more precautions to protect yourself. My kid was sent to the nurses office yesterday because he sneezed. Ffs! Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at January 11, 2022 09:57 AM (F4b8f) Before the wuflu most Americans went on with their lives despite cold symptoms, with fever being the indicator to stay home (kids had to be fever free for 24h to return to school). I went to work many times with colds, and was expected to do so. CAT is correct about trips to the nurse or being sent home over a sneeze which could have been brought about by dust. Expecting people with the sniffles to lock down is silly, or it used to be. We can go too far in either direction. Heading out to work or school with influenza and a dose of tylenol (masking your symptoms) is not ok, but employers are rather punitive toward people with work absences. At my former employer, it was not uncommon to see people getting warnings and even suspensions over staying home with actual illnesses..one could only get sick 3x annually. Madame de Pompadour was one of the most interesting women in history; not only was she beautiful, and the courtesan of a king, but she was also highly intelligent and well educated. She was easily the intellectual equal of any of the French philosophers and scientists of her day, and she was the primary financial patron of Voltaire. She died relatively young, at the age of only 42.

Having failed on building back socialism, the junta wants to crank up the voting rhetoric to eleventy. It's worse than Pearl Harbor!! The Holocaust!! So they sent Biden and his teleprompter to Georgia where they will argue racist American never had free elections until Democrats figured out "vote harvesting" on a massive scale.
Politico says human teleprompter will say, "this as one of the rare moments in a country's history when time stops and the essential is immediately ripped away from the trivial, and that we have to ensure Jan. 6 doesn't mark the end of democracy but the beginning of a renaissance for our democracy." Posted by: kraken at January 11, 2022 10:51 AM (6Je/Q) Yes, yes they do. But they want us to fire the first shot. If we don't comply, that's okay with them. I'm not wild about McCarthy being speaker; but I started to warm to the idea when I saw Schiffy whining to one of the news outlets that letting McCarthy be Speaker would be a "catastrophe for Democracy!!!" Why? Because McCarthy came out and said that if he was made Speaker, he was going to kick Schiff and Omar off the Intelligence Committee because they don't deserve to be on it.
That all by itself is enough to make me feel kinda good about the idea. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 11, 2022 11:04 AM (trdmm) 477

In response to an earlier comment, No this portrait is of Madame De Pompadour, who was the mistress of Louis XV and who died in 1764. The person who was raped and attacked by a mob and beheaded and had her head put up on a spike outside of Marie Antionette's window during the French Revolution was the Princesse de Lamballe, a good friend to Marie Antionette.
