Gun Thread: First Sunday in 2022 Edition!

2022 image scaled.jpg
2022? Huh? Wha? How in the ever-loving hell did that happen?

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Well I spent some of the last week at the beach, so no shooting for your ol' pal Weasel. Weasel really needs to get to his farm-o and rectify that, among other things! Unfortunately, crazy-time is upon me at work, so for the next six weeks or so I will be el mucho busy-o, and cannot always predict when things at the office will go to DEFCON 1. Hopefully soon I will be able to squeeze in a quick trip down with a bag o' guns to shoot.

Programming Note: if you're emailing something for the Gun Thread, please note the Proton Mail address at the bottom of the thread. Thanks!

With that, let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Sig Sauer P230
p230 1 010222 scaled.JPG

p230 2 010222 scaled.JPG

Here's a fun little feller from the WeaselCollection, a Sig Sauer P230SL. I am a big fan of the Sig Sauer brand, and bought this example over 10 years ago. Chambered in .380, the pistol was manufactured in 1993 and is roll marked "Made in W. Germany" on the slide. The model also came in .32 ACP, strongly resembles the slightly smaller Walther PPK, and has a capacity of 7+1 rounds. It was marketed by Sig as a concealed carry option to civilians and a concealed/backup weapon to the West German state police and other agencies. It was replaced in the Sig Sauer lineup by the P232 in 1996. As is the case with most of my carry(able) guns I have replaced the original grips with Hogue Combat grips, which I like bigly.

Here's a video review of the pistol:

The SL model is all stainless, while the blued version has an aluminum frame. The magazine release is located behind the magazine floorplate which bugs some people, and really bugs other people. This is a very solid, well-made gun and isn't as 'snappy' as some lighter .380s can be.

These are great little guns!

First up, our pal RI Red has been to the range with a .22!

RIR 1 010222 scaled.JPG

New Ruger Precision Rimfire next to Christiansen Ranger. 18" bbl on RPR and 16" bbl on Ranger.
Shoot-off today: Ranger shot tighter five-round groups of CCI Subsonic and CCI MiniMag. BUT, take a look at them with Geco Match ammo. Ranger top and bottom left, with Ruger top and bottom right. All four under an inch and the RPR takes it with 1/2" group at 50 yards.

RIR 2 010222 scaled.JPG

Nice shooting, brother! Seriously you guys and gals, do not overlook the .22 when heading to the range. Look at all the fun RI Red had!

Next up, our pal Butch sends us a picture of a Jungle Carbine he's been working on.

butch 1 010222 scaled.jpg

Here is a picture of my Lee-Enfield No. 5 Mk 1, unofficially AKA Jungle Carbine. She was manufactured by Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) in 1945. I seem to have been bitten by the bolt action milsurp bug; I am in the process of acquiring parts to build a M1917 rifle.

The barrel was shot out, so I had it re-barreled by Jim Albright of Albright Firearm Service. In addition to machining the distinctive lightning cuts, he refinished the steel bits and bobs. I highly recommend him.

Other than a deep clean with Simple Green and several coats of boiled linseed oil, I left the wood furniture as is. The dents, dings, and scratches add character and show she's been there and done that.

Very nice, Butch! These are great rifles and a lot of fun to shoot. I'm always a little surprised when I take mine out at the stoutness of the .303 British round. Congratulations on a very nice rifle!

Next up, our pal Ed L hits another home run, this time with shotguns!

ed l 3 010222 scaled.JPG

In July 1940, the US Army found that it had just over 21,000 shotguns in its inventory. This was clearly inadequate to meet the needs for the expanding US military. To meet the need, US Army Ordinance contracted with Winchester for 1,494 Winchester Model 97 trench guns in November 1941. Starting on January 6, 1942, the US Army placed additional orders for Winchester Model 97s in both trench gun (fitted w/ sling swivels, handguard, and bayonet lug) and riot gun configurations totaling in the thousands by June 1942. This trench gun is one of the early production trench guns as shown by the WWI pattern handguard (with six rows of holes), barrel manufactured in 1941, the "US" property mark w/o the Ordinance Corps "flaming bomb," and the "W.B." inspection mark for Colonel Waldemar Broberg, the Chief of Winchester's Ordinance District from July 1941 to June 1942.

ed l 1 010222 scaled.JPG

ed l 2 010222 scaled.JPG

***

The standard bayonet for all US trench guns was the M1917. When attached to the trench gun, this bayonet gives the weapon a uniquely fearsome appearance. No M1917 bayonets were made for WWII; this example (and its leather scabbard) are leftovers from WWI.

ed l 4 010222 scaled.JPG

***

ed l 5 010222 scaled.JPG

Military shotgun ammunition should have been loads of 00 buckshot in brass casings as pictured. The demand for ammo exceeded the supply, so the military pressed paper shotgun shells from the commercial market into service. This proved a problem in wet, humid climates like the South Pacific, where paper shells quickly fell apart in these conditions. It wasn't until near the end of WWII did all-brass shotgun shells become more common than paper shells. Despite this, the Model 97 trench gun gained favor from the USMC, who used both the Winchester Model 97 and Model 12 extensively in their Pacific campaigns. The USMC's primary complaint about the shotgun was the lack of ammunition. The basic load of 25 to 50 shells per shotgun was never enough in combat conditions.

***

ed l 8 010222 scaled.JPG

Riot gun versions of the Winchester Model 97 were meant to arm base security forces, defense contractor security guards, and organizations involved in the war effort (TVA, Manhattan Project, and others). That didn't stop them from making their way into combat, primarily with the USMC. This riot gun was made after the start of WWII, as evidenced by the barrel with a 1942 manufacturing date, the "US" property mark with an Ordinance Corps "flaming bomb," and the "W.B" inspection mark of Colonel Broberg. By the end of Model 97 production in March 1943, Winchester delivered 24,897 Model 97s in all configurations to the military.

Despite the urge to reduce cost and simplify production processes, all Model 97 shotguns were finished in the same commercial quality blue for the entire production run. It's not known why this was case.

ed l 6 010222 scaled.JPG

ed l 7 010222 scaled.JPG

Unlike other military weapons (M1 Garands, M1 carbines, M1911 pistols, etc.), the military Model 97s never became surplus post WWII. Surviving weapons were photographed in action in both Korea and Vietnam. Military Model 97s are very difficult to come by on the collector's market because they are very scarce. Research to date indicates that almost all surviving Model 97s in military inventory (from both WWI and WWII production) were transferred to the South Vietnamese government, where they were captured by the NVA upon the fall of Saigon, many still in their original packing crates.

Holy Shitballs, Ed L! Very nicely done! Thank you!

For all you cigar aficionados out there, what online or brick & mortar stores do you use? It'd be nice to have a few more options and perhaps help some smaller rollers or local stores with some business. Let me know in the comments (use tiny url or similar, please) or just email me the link information and I will make a list and publish in an upcoming thread. Please include your nic, let us know which cigars you like, and tell is what (if anything) makes the store special. Thanks!

Weasel, I understand why you like Sig Sauer so much. I confess to being a Sig fanboy, especially after my introduction to the brand via the P226 Tacops. I'm looking at adding more Sigs to the collection - with any luck, the M18 before the end of the year...maybe the P365???

22 nice SIG, Weasel !

I think of my P290 as an alternate carry gun to the J-frame, but in practice it is feels heavier than the Airweight Chief's & almost never goes out with me. local store was really tryin' to sell me a 365 the other day but I didn't buy it.

gotta love the Flaming Onion stamp on the Winchester !

23 Weasel, does that P230 have a fixed barrel? Looks an awful lot like a PP series Walther.

I bet the aluminum frame in .32 ACP is pretty nice. Probably exactly like the FEG clone with an aluminum frame.

Carrying around the almost 500 rounds you'd need if you were going full auto for a minute could be a backbreaker.

Posted by: Tonypete at January 02, 2022 07:12 PM (mD/uy)

28 By the way, I'm going to come out and say it: the proper caliber for the PPK is .32 ACP. It really is. Just about everything bad people say about .380s is because so many of them were designed for be used in either .380 or .32 ACP and because Americans hate hate hate .32 ACP for some bizarre reason, those versions were discontinued.

Thing is, shot placement is king and a slight loss of horsepower is more than offset by better control and ease of shooting.

It should be big enough that one's spouse never notices the addition or subtraction of 2 pieces.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at January 02, 2022 07:13 PM (a3Q+t)

32 Holy shitballs is right! Dang, Ed L. Just dang.

I've passed a few military shotgun buys over the years - can't recall if Model 12, or 97.

There are Norinco knock-offs (of the 97 or 12? again can't remember) that are apparently OK, and of course cheaper. Guys who want to shoot "heavy metal" (WWII) in 3-gun matches used to seek them out. That bayonet indeed adds a dramatic look. Kind of like Mosin-Nagants with their bayonets attached. Very long pig-stickers, indeed.

33 To tie this morning's Weasel Book Thread to this evening's Weasel Gun Thread, I was grousing this morning about the cost of a copy of Brophy's "The Springfield 1903 Rifles." But I didn't mention the reason that I wanted one. As a last FU to 2021, I belatedly Merry Christmased myself a nice Remington 1903-A3. It's a '43 serial number and a '43 dated barrel so I presume it's original. Don't know yet how original the rest of it is. I hope to get it out to the range by next weekend.

35 I really like the .380. In fact the bullet diameter is the same as 9mm. But the 9mm allows you to carry a heavier bullet. I believe the 9mm case length is longer and the rim is a bit bigger.

37 Good Evening, Weasel and Horde! Trip report to the Chantilly show follows. Friday, December 31: I arrived about 45 minutes before the 3 PM opening. By 3 PM, the line stretched around the block. Cars kept circling around looking for parking. Attendance was very heavy; the insides were packed. Saturday, January 1: Arrived at 11 AM. Parking was surprisingly easy to find, and attendance relatively light, probably due in part to the occasional downpours that morning. Attendance did pick up a little in the afternoon. Ammo prices were in line w/ going market rates, along with guns.

The Germans in WW 1 were very upset at the Marines for using shotguns. They claimed it was because our people couldn't shoot well.
After having a few trenches cleared by them the Germans threatened to execute any American taken prisoner with one. The US Secretary of State at the time informed the Germans that if they did there would be, "Reprisals".

Shotguns were hardly unknown in Europe, but were regarded as purely aristocratic items. Some British units had shotguns, but used them to down enemy carrier pigeons.

The German outrage was entirely class-based.

62 My eldest brother was SF and in Viet Nam in '67-'68. He carried the shotgun for most of his time there and said it was perfect in the jungle. Most of his work was to be quiet and watch. But if you had to beat feet outta someplace, the 12 gauge was great for close in suppression

I have heard this, not from your brother, and it is surprising that it was food in the heavy bush.

70 I have a gun etiquette/neighbor etiquette issue and I'd be curious what some of you think.
First as context, I am very pro 2A, have a variety of rifles, pistolo, shoot regularly etc.

I'm also fortunate enough to have property of several acres, same upstate area.Generally rural area, but relatively close to (1/4 mile) the center of the small hamlet. It backs into some large woods as well, as do the other houses on that side of the road. Nearest (house) neighbors to the left and right are several hundred feet away. Had it going on 2 yrs now.

I get along well with all neighbors I've met. Except I haven't met directly my one neighbor to one side, across the creek. Apparently its an old couple with an adult son.

Lately on weekends I hear pow-pow-pow etc. in rapid succession from fairly close to the house. Clearly a centerfire semi auto. Maybe "legal" (more than 500' from our house) but very audible inside the house. Scares the crap out of our dogs, who now refuse to go outside during and for considerable time after. Really cramping the doggo interactions/enjoyment. IMO the property isn't really "range" suitable without destroying everyones' peace. Broach the issue?

75 CZ-83s are long out of production but (possibly dated info) can be had used/surplus for under $400. Mags are somewhat scarce/costly. Luckily I ran across what was surely one of the last CZ-83s made, for a special run for an American distributor, at a local chain gun store a few years ago. Bought it on the spot, was shocked to see one. Cleaned/function-checked and tucked away unfired.

Rhomboid, the one thing the Norinco's don't have is the slamfire capability of the originals. I think that's the biggest shortfall of the copies. My old SDARNG unit still had some old Winchester Model 12 trench guns when I was there in the mid-90s. We dragged them out for civil defense training and took them to the range to shoot w/ fixed bayonets. You had to make sure your firing stance was really good, because that recoil would knock you a step back if you weren't prepared. The old timers said they brought the Model 12s along for Desert Storm when the unit deployed to the sandbox, which may mean that those Model 12s were some of the last ones to be carried into action by GIs.

96 Weasel I certainly have no ideas/links for smaller or local cigar sources (I know Jim/Sunk New Dawn from Galveston has a local Cuban emigre cigar production source, if he drops in here he can give the details).

Just to mention a few online sources, there's the obvious big old names like JR and Thompson. I've had good luck with Cigar.com, and Famous Smokes, too.

One amusing smaller one is CigarsDaily out of Phoenix, the co-owner is a super nova of positive energy, his videos can be pretty entertaining. I've even listened to some of his interviews with cigar industry people, learned some things.

Oh - and of the whole Nub line, the Maduro was by far my favorite. Personal taste, and/or conditioning of the Nubs I've smoked (some might have been dry), not sure. There's a Nub Sumatra I want to try, that's the most uncommon one.

101 >>>The standard bayonet for all US trench guns was the M1917. When attached to the trench gun, this bayonet gives the weapon a uniquely fearsome appearance. No M1917 bayonets were made for WWII; this example (and its leather scabbard) are leftovers from WWI.

Interesting M1917 bayonet trivia:
In 1966 procurement orders were let for brand new production M1917 bayonets. The contracts were issued to General Cutlery of Fremont, Ohio and Canadian Arsenals Ltd., the old Long Branch Arsenal of Quebec, Canada. Stockpiles had finally run out, and new Winchester 1200 trench shotguns were being issued. These were used in limited quantities during the Vietnam War.

It was not until towards the end of the Vietnam war that new Military shotguns were designed to use the newer knife bayonets. Such as the Stevens Model 77E with the M5 Bayonet, or the United States Marine Corps "Model 870 Mark 1" shotgun with the M7 bayonet.

M1917 bayonets were still in used by the US Army as late as the early 2000s for use with the M1200 shotgun.

This is why a cheap 12ga pump is often the first stop for someone lacking a long arm, but also just a stepping stone. Sure, they end fights - up until the fight is a certain size. They don't have the legs to fight very long in regards to ammo carried, household logistics (newer samples of both the 870 and 500 will shoot themselves to pieces with moderately high round counts), and the ability to stay in a fight without reloading drills most users fumble.

He's on borrowed time (a healthy 12 year old) so I don't foresee any major "conditioning" program. The other is a border collie and while not as jumpy at explosions as senior dog, absolutely adores and follows him wherever he goes. So if senior dog ain't having it, junior dog stays inside too.

I think getting to know them before broaching anything like a complaint is wise. They (or their son) really may be a bit "out there" though. New Years we were treated to an extended, professional grade fireworks show (hours after we'd gone to bed)....

6-7 rounds in a small wheelgun or single stack pocket pistol will solve most CCW problems, but when you hit the wall in # of bad guys and distances, you hit it hard. They're not comparable to a full size-ish pistol with 15-20 rounds on tap and a few spares.

But most people presented with that quandry should really be somewhere else instead, carrying the smaller pistol. If 7 rounds won't cut it I'm probably not going.

121 Ed L, thanks for putting that additional knowledge. No slam-fire would mean "why bother?" for the Norinco knock-offs - I think that feature is a main attraction for those wanting to shoot, not just collect.

I recall a Norinco on sale up in LA for some moderate price a few years ago, but haven't monitored local/regional private sale boards for some time now.

Oh - one kinda related thing. I came *this* close to getting another military shotgun (had the Ordnance bomb, I think), WWII, full-length barrel - was used in first stage of anti-aircraft gunner training. Guys would be in the back of a moving truck, and shoot at - well, not sure, I think clay birds thrown behind the truck as they moved. This was a private sale here, about 8-9 years ago. And separately, previously, I'd talked to a WWII vet who'd done exactly this kind of training down at the Imperial Beach base that's now (I think) a Coast Guard or reserve helicopter base, right near the border.

Take a careful look at Charter Arms revolvers. The ones I see in stores are .38s, but if she likes the feel and weight, you can get them in .32 H&R Magnum and feed them .32 Long ammo, which is very mild and easy to shoot.

And just to be clear - you're not getting her something strange, it is the *exact same frame* just with a slightly small bore diameter and room for six rather than five shots in the cylinder.

I did a review on the Undercoverette not long ago on this very thread. One of my favorite new production pistols.

132 Fun side topic: ATF is going nuts mailing angry letters to people who bought stuff from certain companies that supply DIY parts for form 1 NFA projects.

But the problem is they're telling literally everyone on the customer list to contact their local ATF office to "surrender your illegal silencers", when virtually nobody bought anything illegal and most just bought things like mounts, thread adapters, and the like. Apparently they've done similar things with distillery supplier customer lists for years.

Seriously, fuck these people. You'd think they could leave us alone and go back to running guns to cartels and gangs.

Rhomboid, the military purchased large numbers of full length (30" barrel) shotguns for aerial gunnery training. I saw a semi-auto model (Browning Auto-5 type?) equipped w/ spade grips and large concentric sights for sale at a gun show. Supposedly it was set in the ring mount of a 2 1/2 ton truck driven at speed past a bunch of clay pigeon launchers for turret gunner training. Interesting artifact, but it looked impractical to store, let alone take to the range.

185 Took wife to indoor range for first time in a year. Ruger P95 9mm and a EAA Windicator revolver in 38/357. She handles the 9mm just fine, but found grip on the 38 and found even 38 a bit to much recoil. One shot was enough so didn't push her to it with 357.
Do need to get her in a class as is typical she will take instruction better from someone anyone other than me. And it wouldn't hurt if it comes from one trained to teach.

Already signed up for private outdoor club starting in July. They have classes for women (membership not required).

The store attached to the indoor range had pallet loads of name brand ARs for $1k each and common ammo by the case at fair enough prices. All other ammo was on order$2 / round and limited section.

First time at the range with this rifle and it shot well. Basic M&P and a nice gun to shoot.

He said that (the primer stuff) was likely part of it, but he really seemed to think that the headspacing variance was more significant.

And he's shooting a 10/22. (Ok, like most, it *maybe* has a Ruger receiver, but everything else is replaced, particularly the barrel.)

I've had people tell me that 870s produced in the years just prior to Remington's Chapter 11 breakup and sale had a lot of QC related problems. Never heard anything like that on the Mossbergs, though. In fact, I think they still have some DOD and other .gov contracts for 500/590 series guns.

Look at some .32s. Not a ton of current production, but you can get some great deals online for very nice surplus stuff.

Weasel's SIG at the top of the post, for example. FEG made a near-twin called the PA-63 which comes in .32 ACP (sometimes called the AP-66, it's complicated) and those are just a pleasure to shoot. Aluminum frame, easy to use, comfy in the hand, modest recoil.

Americans hate .32 ACP for some odd reason but it is arguably the best "pocket pistol" caliber out there. In a small frame, .380 can just be too snappy for some people (not for me, but I'm an oddball anyway). And .32 revolvers are comfy as well.

Kinda sorta have long wanted a 9mm/1911, seems like a very stable platform, easy to shoot very accurately with that weight/caliber combo.

Don't forget the HK Mark 23, aka the "crew served pistol." It's huge, but since the frame is plastic, weight isn't that bad. It survived the SOCOM torture test of 30,000 plus rounds, which included it being buried in sand, dunked in seawater, and frozen in ice. I don't think any other pistol (not just .45s) has gone through that much testing.

I tried to explain this very thing to a Cop one day and he didn't get it because he is concerned with stopping a criminal and I don't need to be. He was saying a single stack 9mm was not "enough" gun and I told him it was perfect for me because I only needed to use it to get away from the bad guy. I did not need to stop him, I just need to get away from him or make him leave me alone. Either way works.

303 Weasel one thing to mention to anyone starting out with the cigar thing, very effective and very inexpensive humidors can now be made with tupperware-style containers and Boveda packs, and Spanish cedar trays.

And Boveda packs *can* be recharged, easily. I prefer the shot glass of distilled in an airtight container approach, not as messy as the submersion method.

I kinda get a reloading vibe as I scheme new ways to save a buck with the cigar thing. Same McGyver ethic, same odd satisfaction.

The Lahti is a really nice pistol and it has a unique hesitation lock. It uses that vertical sliding bit to slow down the slide opening, but does not stay locked like a 1911.

There are three successful hesitation locks (that I can think of), one with the Peterson designed Remington Model 51 where the bolt was held by bolt carrier similar to an FN-FAL but the bolt in recoiling cammed out of its track and released the bolt carrier and the slide for recoil , the Savage 1905 pistol where the rotating bolt was supposed to retard the slide opening, and the Lahti with that vertical sliding bit.

the mechanics of it fascinate me.

And what you said last thread about avocados at the stand in Bonsall, back in the day - I remember after wind storms, there'd be temporary road-side stands with boxes of avos for $5 or something. Down here in the populated part of the county. That was back when avos were expensive and rare outside SoCal, before it all changed.

You technically can use .32 ACP as well, but brand selection is very important. I had good luck with Fiocci, but YMMV and I wouldn't use it in an actual defense scenario.

I'd be comfortable with .32 S&W Long in that role, though.

350 A warning for those hankering for a bolt action military surplus rifle. Beware! The collection (or accumulation) of these items is dangerous. Oh sure, you start innocently with an '03 Springfield. Then there is that bargain Mosin-Nagant, possibly from Finnish forces. A Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 (an underrated cartridge) leads to a SMLE 303 British which leads to an unaltered M1917. Before you know it you are looking for obsolete Lee Loaders, bayonets, ammo pouches, web gear, maybe original wartime sniper scopes.

SOBS!! It's a sickness that must be carefully guarded against.

385 For the edification of the Horde, and as An Illustration of the Facial Idiocy of CA Gun Laws, in CA a "private sale" is key in one respect: it is a way to buy/sell handguns that are not allowed for normal commercial sale.

You move to CA from NV with a gun not on the "roster". You can sell it, private sale (goes through an FFL here, has for a long time I think). Or you're law enforcement - you can buy the banninated handgun new, from a dealer, in CA.

What's the "roster" based on, you ask? Oh, *safety*, of course!

So, those fast thinkers in class will already have figured out that CA's gun laws forbid sale of "unsafe" handgun models to regular people, by commercial dealers - but ALLOWS them, between private parties, or to/from law enforcement. You know, just how FAA certifications for aircraft depend on who's flying them, or how OSHA regs for safety gear depends on who's using it.

Oh, wait .....

Most excellent Gun Thread, as always! While I've always loved the Trench Gun, I never trusted the Norinco import, and wasn't sufficiently motivated to try to acquire an original. Betcha CZ could make a '97 I'd wanna buy, though.

Been carrying the hell out of the SIG P238 in 9mm. Mini-1911. The factory "finger groove" rubber grip sucks, and I've got new rosewood set inbound from eBay. Otherwise? Do they make a version in .32 ACP? I'd buy one such in a hearbeat. Also got some of the SeaFoam "Deep Creep". Sure de-leads a revolver barrel in a hurry! 406 And this absurd, comically indefensible "roster" law has actually survived court challenges. The rulings, as you'd imagine, have been as ludicrous as the judiciary issuing them. In what I think was the most recent test, your own current sitting VP, as CA AG, hilariously injected a completely new (and really, really ridiculous) element into the trial, *mid-stream*, which had even the sympathetic observers shaking their heads (she's real bright, in case you hadn't noticed).

My Sig mk25 has the manganese phosphate finish on the barrel and a number of the internal parts. It apparently is very corrosion resistant, but does not seem to wear as well

427 I'm on the other end of the scope argument. For a new shooter with a 22 I'd go with a $80 Bushnell (4-9 or less). That way you get to start shooting and learning scopes immediately. Then start watching scope videos, I recommend Cyclops Joe ( Joe Rhea). There's a whole lot to learn about scopes before laying down the big dough. I have a hand me down 4-9x40 Bushnell Banner on my 22 and it's perfect for that gun. You really want to know more before spending a lot of dough. What kind of reticle, FFP vs SFP, MOA vs Mil ? etc.

430 PSA - Starlinebrass.com does have 32 H & R in stock now. They are very good on delivery time on the "backorders" too, usually faster than some on line retailers are for in stock.

Grafs is also good for brass. Especially for really obscure shiite that you only could get by rolling your own for decades already.

If you want to make a modern version of the trench gun, get a Mossberg 590 with the heat shield and an M7/M9 bayonet. I think most, if not all, 590s still come w/ a bayonet lug for the M7 or M9 bayonet. It's not as impressive as the 97 with the M1917 sword bayonet, but it's a lot more affordable.

467 For whoever was looking for a full size 45 look at the Sig P320. I've been a Sig fan my whole life and have come around to really liking their striker-fired guns. I carry a P365 and just picked up another P320 Texas Ranger edition in 9mm.

I'm also lucky enough to have a Cigars Intl physical location less than 10 minutes from me. Great place with indoor and outdoor smoking areas, full bar and of course a great selection of stogies. I've burned a few Oliva Serie V Melanios this past week - one of my favorite sticks.

As for boots I've been converted to Tecovas. They have a store near me and I have two pairs of them so far.

Thanks for the thread Weasel!

He did 30 years in the Army, 1936-1966. I have a bunch of his records but one thing escapes me. He went over on the ueen Mary in 1942 and came back, from Italy, in mid 1944. I don't know how he came back. I assume they brought him back to staff the Armored School at Ft Knox.

482 Weasel, just popping in to say thanks for the gun thread.

Hope all the posters have a festive New Year.

BTW, one of the reasons why a lot of old timers do not like and bad mouth more modern versions of traditional firearms is the widespread use of MIM (metal injection molded) parts instead of the older forged parts. A lot of those parts had well documented issues in the 90's when introduced and the early 00's. Not so much now as the process seems to be more refined at most places.

Previous to that time, most action parts were forged, a few were investment castings, but mostly forged, but that is a more costly way to do parts nowadays. So, the widespread use of MIM parts by brand name firearms companies including places like Remington, etc.

Posted by: dartist at January 02, 2022 08:12 PM (+ya+t)

Yes. The advantage is primarily a lot more control in a situation where you don't need the shot/slug to travel 50yds. Or even 20. Also, more ammo in the tube.

I haven't been able to try mine since I can't get to an outdoor range around here easily, and the indoor ones won't allow shot.

497 Howdy whig! Happy New Year. Hope all is going as well as it can.

Thanks Weasel, two close relatives are now in memory care and assisted living respectively. Still sorting houses for downsizing by those relatives which will take several months.

Just a reminder to others, make sure your near and dear ones do not retain firearms past their ability to judge when to use them.

Have you tried Mason Munitions? The more common brand I saw out everywhere when I was looking, and when it was in, it was EXPENSIVE. Mason Munitions is a small company and don't seem to get the internet gun store love the other guys do. But they had pretty good service (again, haven't gotten to shoot them yet, dangit).

Posted by: GWB at January 02, 2022 09:37 PM (zS6T2)

499 Yes. The advantage is primarily a lot more control in a situation where you don't need the shot/slug to travel 50yds. Or even 20. Also, more ammo in the tube.

What about sights, bead or ghost ring close up like that?

See the National Personnel Records Center's webpage about the 1973 fire for more details. Most losses were for folks discharged prior to 1964, but reconstruction of records to give basic info (dates of service, rank, discharge status, etc.) at a minimum should be available to look up.

501 I just looked and paid $99 for the Georgia Boot mid-calf all leather work boot in December 2017. Heck of a deal.

503 Nub maduro is on my favorites list. Just because it's a short stick, don't think it will be a quick smoke.
For cigar folks in WA, www.lilbrown.com is worth a check. Historically, UPS ground is like overnight delivery. YMMV. And if you're passing through Union Gap, their store is nothing fancy, but the selection is excellent.

Very good advice. Had my stepdad pull out a pistol when I came by the house one night. He didn't recognize me. Fortunately is was inoperable but still sacred the hell out of the Mrs.

I love the Smoke Shack in teh Gap.
They've been closed since the 'Rona started but the drive through is open.
Great people who know their stuff.
Also, coffee bar so you can drink coffee and smoke your cigar.

519 Yes, I am advocating that if you are involved in a personal protection issue, that you ignore the lawyer's advice... that you go home and decide you are too emotionally shaken to call anyone.
You sit, and wait. And wait. And if no one calls you, or comes by, you don't volunteer.
Am I wrong?

525 "The USMC's primary complaint about the shotgun was the lack of ammunition. The basic load of 25 to 50 shells per shotgun was never enough in combat conditions."

I heard from a Marine tasked with body recovery that the shotgunner was usually the only man who consistently was out of ammo when they got to a site.
That, also, was early on when there were still issues with the reliability of the M16.

526 I just picked up a Ruger Precision Rimfire in .22(it is also offered in .17) at Rural King during church week(best time to buy guns!).

I haven't fired it yet, but I got rings and a Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 ready to go, with a light and relatively inexpensive Magpul Bipod.

I'm distinctly not a Ruger fan, but this rifle feels great in the hand and to the shoulder, and I like slowing down and really concentrating on shots(vs. the more tactical firearms I handled while in the military and previously for CC).

I've never worked with optics before and this will be a great way to get my feet wet.... Under $650 for gun, rings and a respectable optic, with .22 still relatively cheap.
