Ace's Rockin' New Year Cafe

Well, not really rockin'. Just kinda the same old crap if I'm being honest.

Once you're Almost 29, is any new years, or any of your own birthdays, really rockin', or even more than a spot on the calendar?

The Horrible Year in Pictures. Though a lot of these are from 2020. I think 2020 and 2021 are basically one continuous turd of a year.

Anyway:

Screenshot (1116).png

Here's a little flashback: A thread of people wearing very strange improvised protective garb. Many of these pictures were during the initial covid panic.

I remember then when it all seemed a little scary but more amusing than scary. It would all blow over in about... two weeks. It would take two weeks to flatten the curve, they told us.

We were younger then, weren't we? Much younger.

Rockin' horse.

Chatty batties. Cute little foxbats.

New video of Boji the Commuting Dog.

Why does he travel? I understand why he'd want to be inside someplace. But why does he move from one train to another, or to a ferry?

Here's a story using older video to explain Boji's story, if you don't know it.

Otter is ready for his Oscar nom.

Napping otter.

If you missed it: Smooth Otter Criminal.

Cat cuddles with his four bird "friends:" Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Also Dinner.

Dog invents game of Hackey-Stick, then buys a van to follow Phish around the country.

The odd kitten.

The Reverse Heist.

Dog-faced pony-soldier.

A baby elephant wants to be friends with a dog, but the dog's not too sure.

Here, let me help you, buddy.

Inman: Haulin' ass.

Champagne is great for the homemade fruit sauce that you put on French toast the next day...you never drink it.

When in Las Vegas this summer, the spouse and I were gifted 2 high end mini champagne bottles by the Waldorf. With cancer, I don't really drink (and I've never drunk champagne), but the kids wanted to try it, so it became a beautiful cooked champagne peach sauce for our dairy free French toast breakfast the next day...

102 90 Please give a spoiler alert before mentioning football scores.
Posted by: TC at December 31, 2021 07:52 PM (00h1T)

Spoiler alert:

In football, touchdowns are worth 6 points. The team then has the option to kick for an extra point, or run a play to try to get two points.

Field goals are worth 3 points. A defensive Safety is worth 2.

Hope that didn't spoil it too much.

312 I remember previous years here in Tyler, midnight at New Years Eve sometimes sounds like the Yugoslav civil war. But what's really scary is every once in a while you hear a big, single BLAM! and you realize "Damn, that was a .50 cal!"

361 312 I remember previous years here in Tyler, midnight at New Years Eve sometimes sounds like the Yugoslav civil war. I used to live closer to the north side (the NE/4 is now all Mescan) and it was always amazing to hear the firepower being unleashed. I can tell shotguns, and rifles and Oh! that was a 9 shot clip, and there's a 10 shot! You must have a Glock!

But what's really scary is every once in a while you hear a big, single BLAM! and you realize "Damn, that was a .50 cal!"

I think my corner of East Texas could outgun most European countries these days.

I didn't see anything about testing in this message. My understanding is that testing/mask is an alternative to vaccination in the OSHA proclamation. I will wait for the full policy on Monday. If testing is not going to be an alternative, I may be out of here pretty soon. Waiting also for Supreme Court hearing Jan. 6. But the Court has been disappointing recently...

My mom used to threaten HISD with calling Marvin Zindler when they wouldn't fix problems at my elementary school. It was a very poor, mostly-black school with a handful of white Montessori students, and HISD would let them go with a broken A/C in Houston in August, let the roofs leak - I remember eating lunch next to a trash can half full of rain - etc., because HISD, which was NOT run by white people at the time, did not give a shit about poor blacks. Marvin Zindler would have eaten that up with a spoon. But he didn't have to, as the mere invocation of his name was enough to get the school repaired.

Depends, I think most of the BBQ and noodle places focus on their strengths, gimbap and sushi have different focus, and anyways, Americans just call it sushi no matter what.
The local place run by Koreans that serves sushi is called Fuji Rice Time, so I think they just go with it, whatever it is.

My wife calls it gimbap, but then she is Korean.

585 >>It's hell to be poor.

Where that really hit home for me was having a special needs kid and trying to get him adequate support through the public school system. As will surprise no one, their support was wholly inadequate, and they flat out lied straight to my face about what was happening with him. I, with help from my parents, had the financial resources to get him into a private school that gave him what he needed, but before I could do that, there was an ARD, and I guarantee you those women still wake up in the middle of the night shaking from the tongue-lashing I gave them. And they deserved every bit of it, too. I don't feel bad at all.

Anyway, back to the point, one of the things that struck me about that was, what about the parents who DON'T have the financial resources to break their kids free? There is a big gap between the income level where financial aid is no longer offered and the income level where financial aid isn't needed. We didn't qualify for any financial aid, but that doesn't mean we didn't go into debt (which we're now out of) to get our kid the help he needed.

I'm sure everyone has read online that DeSantis has made no public appearances since the 17th.

Obviously I don't know anything more than the competing internet versions, and was wondering if he did in fact make an appearance at the game.

The same reason the Democrats dropped their Lie about forgiving student loans -- so they can continue campaigning on it?

There's a fair amount of basic lot parking. It's probably too easy to steal cars in Minneapolis proper to make the thrill worth the risk near MOA. Seriously though. Locals here have no clue about the carjackings unless they follow crime blotters on Facebook and Twitter. MSM report the occasional 3-day task force stings, but those give the impression that the problem's been solved.

King George wasn't dethroned. Not every loss of territory is a coup d'etat. See the Glorious Revolution (which is an example of a coup) for comparison, where the government is replaced but there isn't a territorial change. You can also look up a list of historical coups. The concept is very different from an independence revolt.

Nice 101st Bday party for Mom. • July, a nice family 4th, then I had a bad fall, cracked and scarred, but got over it. • August, lost my Mom.
• September, family relations soured, including we haven't seen our grandkids since. Because we want to kill gramma by not getting jabbed. Oh, wait...
• October-December adjusting to the new post-Mom normal.
• November -Nice the-rest-of-us family Thanksgiving.
