Covid Is Now a Mark of Social Distinction Cafe

bojiupdate.jpg
Boji the Commuting Dog update
Just making transit more enjoyable
for everyone

Cat: I have spoken. I shall say no more until I am appeased.

Blind dog finding her master.

Just some lions sleeping in a tree.

Black dog sees his shadow, wants to make friends.

Just a cute one.

Mouse thinks outside the maze.

Rolling zen.

Otter coaster!

Inman:

Trigger warning: She pulls the trigger with no warning.

Guy pulls a gun on women with their children, probably to kidnap a child, not considering that some might be pistol-packin' mamas.

Guys -- but Jonah did everything right!!! And he scolded all the right people!!!

Screenshot (1084).png

Spoiler: Jonah did not get covid from going to the gym.

Yeah so now that the Laptop Class is getting covid, there's no more Covid Shaming. You're no longer a Science-Denying, Grandma-Killing Rethuglican Death-Santis Cultist if you get covid.

There are no more Moral Lessons to be drawn from someone getting covid. We're just now supposed to offer support and well-wishes.

I mean, now that it's ravaging the Blue Cities and Blue States (again), and, most importantly of all, the Blue Sectors of the economy, we're to show empathy for those who have it, rather than condescension and contempt and class-based outgroup hatred.

It's kind of a Cool Thing now that the Very Online Twitter Addicts are all getting it, huh?

PS: My "spoiler" is just supposition: I can say he didn't get covid from the gym because I can see, by casual visual inspection, he hasn't been to a gym since 12th grade.

I have no intention of ever allowing someone to jab me with something that will mess up my strong immune system. My body, my choice, asshole.

60 Some people have commented, something along the lines that they wonder if people never contemplated their own mortality.

I think they have this wrong, very wrong, in the sense that it is long been my observation, trailing the "boomer" generations, is that is practically all they think about. In the same way they "discovered" sex, drugs, and rock and roll before anyone else (wine women and song), they are also consequently the first generation to ever get old and die.

Starting with the anti-tobacco craze, we've been inundated with a never ending litany of Things We Must Do (or Not Do) In Order That We May Live Forever.

The ChiCom flu is just an extension, or amplification of this. It isn't that they haven't contemplated their own mortality, they can't think of anything else. But they think they can "bargain" with it, they can't accept their own mortality. Weird diets and fads, health nuttery, it's all an extension of a particular pathology. It isn't the elderly throwing the young under the bus, it's the middle aged people throwing both the elderly AND children under the bus, because they are vapid fuckwits.

132 I love how everyone turned into epidemiologists on a moments notice. Fully versed in the new technology of the mRNA vaccine and how it works. And then when you have a few questions they are oh so quick to explain to you why you're wrong. And all they're doing is parroting what they read or listened to from the apologist media who also doesn't know how mRNA vaccines work.

But the guy who pioneered their development? He gets banned for misinformation. Uh huh. And repeating what the CDC just said themselves were the facts becomes dangerous misinformation that must be banned immediately.

Can we now see how ignorant all these tech elites are? They know very little and generally have big problems relating to people and social situations and went into the tech field for those reasons but suddenly they're experts on everything and can tell people with decades of experience that they're wrong. Having grown up listening to Elton John, we saw him a few years ago (for free, with great seats ....because), although my wife warned me to be disappointed. Now he's just and old, gay fat man, sitting at his piano.
And yes, it was kind of a bad concert. The place was filled (~ 20k people), and I felt sorry for people that paid a lot of money for tickets (we sat in $700 seats for free, because, well, connected).
I have not seen Neil Diamond in concert (although about the same age as AH Lloyd, as we both know), but people do say he puts on a good show.

The numbers on Worldometer now list New York as 4th in total deaths, below California, Texas, and Florida. Deaths per million population is a different story. New York is No. 6, Florida is No. 14, Texas is No. 26, and California is No. 35.

The Democrat-Media Complex picks the stat that best shows Red States as COVID Mass Infection and Total Death Zones. Looking at all the stats for all 50 states, there are a few outliers in some categories, but to my eye there's not much difference between all the states. Demonstrating that masks and lockdowns and school closures do not stop this bug from spreading.

My fault for long ago having given up on digging into it all. Surely someone here has checked to see if the claims about therapeutic value are borne out in data from the now enormous number of real world vaccinations.

I doubt it. If there is proof per CDC, FDA, and the vaxx makers, I'd doubt it.

I think the vaxx effectiveness numbers were suspect from the get-go. I believe that in the human trials, people were vaxxed and simply sent home with instructions to continue their normal daily lives. Most They may never have come within miles of an infected person. I do not believe human tests in the US have ever intentionally exposed vaxxed subjects to the bug. I may be wrong.

Our local hospital publishes a weekly chart with total number in hospital, in ICU, and on ventilator. It's pretty heavy non-vaxxed. Like, 90%. And they note that the non-vaxxed average 2 co-morbidities, vs 4 for vaxxed, and that average age is about the same - late 50's.

At least that's my reaction, based on milliseconds of analysis and the thinnest of backgrounds in the topic.

And I didn't bother to check, but apparently the number 2 or 3 or 4 definition of vaccine includes (always did) a treatment that reduced symptoms. However the practical and universally understood definition for everyone alive today has always been "prevents infection". So, misleading at best.

I believe Romo's work has forced Troy Aikman on Fox to up his game. Aikman had been getting lazy about explaining details of why a play worked or not.

Pretty basic facts. Yet there exists an audience so stupid that equally stupid race-baiting ignoramuses pretend to believe that Germany wouldn't have been a target.

Though the dynamics of the war and the difference between target countries woulda made German target selection for the nukes a bit more challenging. Decapitation definitely a consideration, but most cities already leveled. Hiroshima was deliberately spared so as to make for a more dramatic impact, but by August '45 also had a significant military value as HQ for defense of Kyushu.

All these guys know the game but he does an excellent job breaking it down and he is uncanny calling plays before they happen sometimes.

Nobody did more to popularize the game with the masses than Madden. He was fun and never himself too seriously. He obviously knew the game very well. He had a fantastic winning percentage and won a Super Bowl and you don't do that by chance in the NFL.

629 599 Wind chill or no wind chill, temperatures below zero can cause frostbite just as easily as warmer temperature with a wind chill below zero. And I think wind in the Dakotas is a given. It's just odd. They sometimes give warnings in the Portland area about rain. I can understand if there are flooding concerns but it does rain there, a lot.

Posted by: Notsothoreau - look forward at December 29, 2021 09:13 PM (5HBd1)

Exposure time to the conditions determines frostbite risk. It takes longer to be frostbitten at -20F in still air than at -20F with a 15 mph breeze. In Sioux Falls, SD one winter way back when, I remember the TV stations broadcasting 30 second frostbite warnings due to the windchill. Meaning that bare skin in the wind would get frostbitten within 30 seconds.

635 Actually Tonypete the Potsdam Declaration was one of the warnings. And we routinely dropped leaflets on other Japanese cities (and German, I think) warning residents to get outta Dodge because you know what. Something that seems almost unknown.

In the end the emperor, his key adviser, and a few members of the Big Six who had come in after Saipan (with explicit instruction from the throne to find a way to end the war) - all of them long in favor of ending the war - were able to seize on the nukes as a rationale for surrender. So technically the nukes didn't "work", in their intended sense of shock - but they served for the purpose and all ended well.

There has never been a general understanding that vaccines do anything other than inoculate and immunize one from disease.

I've taken every standard vaccine except the flu vaccine that have been developed and been proven to be effective over the decades they have been administered.
I've never taken the flu vaccine because..

A. I've had the flu perhaps 5 times in the last twenty years, perhaps 10 times in my entire life.

Lots of original elements including detail on the "manpower crisis" of March 1945 (for us), the Soviets' inability to mount any kind of invasion of Hokkaido within the relevant time frame, and much else.

Add "Japan 1941" by Eri Hotta for the amazing story of how the war got started by Japan, and "Japan's Struggle To Surrender" (forget author) about the palace and the Big Six in August 1945 to round things out. "Japan's Longest Day" (a group effort, Japanese side) about August 14-15 is also must-reading, on the attempted coup etc.

I went to the coldest game in NFL history - the freezer bowl in Cincy in 1982 -50 some wind chill. In boy scouts we camped out in negative 20 temps so we had to put our juice cans in the fire to thaw them. I know the facts, but my beef with wind chill and the even more ludicrous heat index stuff is that it cheapens real temperatures. 0 degrees with no wind is one thing, but -15 for reaszies is far worse than -15 wind chill by the chart. And all of them ignore the sun, which is a huge help. At that game in the third quarter, the sun put us in shadow and we were suffering very much more. We could feel head sucking out through our feet through the boots into the concrete, so we held one up alternately.

The drive for all of these is to have big and loud numbers for ratings and to scare people. Minus 10 should be scary enough, but if you think 25 with a breeze is no big deal the real cold will hit you like a brick.

691 @638 I believe we did give the Japanese a bit of a warning pre-Hiroshima about how we would use a very destructive weapon if they didn't give in. They didn't bite.

----

And I can understand why. We'd been bombing them at will for quite a while by then, with bombers that were flying too high for their own fighters to reach. We'd been conducting firebombing raids that were so destructive that we'd had to intentionally avoid bombing certain cities just so that we'd still have targets for when the atomic bombs were ready. What was just another destructive weapon?

The fact of the matter was that the country should have surrendered months earlier. The atomic bombs didn't really change much in the overall calculus. Tthe real importance of the bombs, imo, was that their appearance served to get the Japanese leadership to admit something that had been apparent for some time - namely, that further struggle served no useful purpose for the Japanese nation.

The nukes *were* just bombs, and the "shock" value on Japanese leadership is not apparent from any accounts of what went on.

But there's no evidence the nukings changed the calculations of either the War Party or the Peace Party (to crudely apply some simplified terms).

The War Party wasn't crazy or suicidal, actually, just miscalculating. They were holding out for a conditional surrender, not no surrender. And the Peace Party had long wanted to end the war - final govt. was appointed with this instruction from the throne, after Saipan's fall doomed Tojo.

759 740 I went to the coldest game in NFL history - the freezer bowl in Cincy in 1982

Holy shit. I was at that game too! My dad was scared I was getting frostbite on my feet, which I think I was. Coldest I've been in my life.

Posted by: AlaBAMA at December 29, 2021 09:54 PM (4fSQf)

760 Coldest I've ever been in was -45f, no wind. I went outside just so I could say I've been in -45f. It hurt to breathe. I sure wasn't out very long.

761 My understanding is that the A-bombs directly led to the Emperor's announcement to his cabinet. So evidently they changed something, even if it was only to provide political cover for something the Emperor had already wanted to do.
Posted by: junior at December 29, 2021 09:50 PM (PTw5h)

I think it gave the Emperor enough moxie to force the war party to give way and let the surrender happen.

762 Think the freezer bowl was Chargers vs. Bengals, some unbelievably frigid conditions. Kind of a shame. The year Coryell had created a machine nobody could stop, they had some ridiculous average winning point margin - it was like mismatched college teams really. Think they beat the Bengals easily and badly (like most everyone) earlier that season. Then, 40 below or whatever.

Talked with a Charger whose shoe caught on fire when he was holding his toes up one of the gas heaters on the sidelines. Funny story.

763 735 No, heat transfer does not increase exponentially with velocity. In fact it generally will increase at less than linear.
----------------

They don't know how to calculate it.
It used to be called the Wind Chill Factor, it was developed by/for the military to determine when they needed to protect exposed equipment.

It didn't work.

Now, the TV weatherman refers to it as the Feels Like temperature.

we had newspaper for the concrete to stand on and it still pulled heat out of the feet. The freezer campout I was on might have been a tad colder but there was not much wind.

Both the anal swab and the nasal swab must be used for all tests. Using one swab. In that order.

768 junior the bombings were in fact seized on by the peace faction to end the war, but it was definitely more a rationale than a reason. The positions of the two factions hadn't changed in some time. The hardliners were holding out for a conditional surrender (with ridiculous conditions, of course, complete non-starter).

And while it's not absolutely certain, it's pretty clear the momentous imperial conference in the bomb shelter of the Gobunko was a set-up by the peace faction, working with the emperor and his adviser Kido. The Bix Six (war cabinet) were deadlocked, 3-3, on accepting the Potsdam Declaration. Then the PM made the highly unusual move of asking the sovereign to break the tie, in effect.

I was only asserting that the bombs did not in fact have the "shock" effect that was very much part of the US plan and objective in using them. It doesn't appear they did.

Well they didn't have the best record in the AFC, so the game was in Ohio. And a very atypical Ohio winter at that.

There was a saying then that the two best offenses in the league was San Diego and who they were playing that week. They overcompensated on one aspect of the game and that cost them when it wasn't clicking. A year or so later the Bengals beat them by a similar score with a 105 yard INT for a touchdown. Usually a team needs better balance

775 Well, we are now in the thick of the crud even though I have taken and made the kids take the vit c, d, zinc for this past year. 3 kids had it over Christmas and I have it now. Yes we are 3 states away and we're visiting family. We are now stuck, they have evac'd grandma and have helped us tremendously. My son tested pos but the local family neg. I have it but haven't wasted a test. We are in a big city, there are no tests to be found. We have a couple left but no stores have it.

So far it is a bad fever cold. But youngest got over it in a day sleeping it off. Older is lingering a bit. 2 oldest and hub don't have it, yet. Waiting for the hammer to fall.
