The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

I am not saying convict Byrd. I am saying try him, if only for the peace of mind of a nation that no longer can trust its federal government. Don Surber

Quote II & III

“Look, there is no federal solution. This gets solved at the state level.” Joe Biden December 2021

“I am not going to shut down the economy, period. I am going to shut down the virus,” Joe Biden December 2020

Quote IV

“We are so encouraged by the strength and determination you have shown during this very difficult time. You will remain in our hearts for complete care and comfort as you continue to recover. With your steadfast spirit, and the unwavering strength and support of your wonderful family and many friends, your future potential is limitless. May God bless you and your family.” President Donald Trump

Unfortunately, hypocrisy once again hits Chicago like a hammer. What good are gun control laws if you don't enforce them?!?!

A Chicago man who has been linked to guns and violence in the city since at least 2013 opened fire on two cops who tried to arrest him for openly carrying a handgun on a Near West Side street corner Christmas Eve, prosecutors said. The man posted just $500 to get out of jail for allegedly carrying a gun in his hand at the exact same location in March, according to prosecutors and public records.

Nokomis Jefferson, 29, was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a weapon for the latest incident on Sunday. He was still on bond for the March case when he allegedly tried to kill the officers.

Jefferson is the 62nd person accused of killing, trying to kill, or shooting someone in Chicago this year while awaiting trial for a felony. A total of 95 victims are involved in those crimes — 25 of them were murdered.

Woman Hit With $6,864 Airbnb charge for "Damages” After She Let Friend Book With Her Name

If you're the kind of person who has a hard time telling your friends, acquaintances, or random folks who ask for favors "no," then you're no stranger to heartache, and headache, that could've probably been avoided. Learning to be an "a-hole" for the sake of not only your own sanity but to instead be available for those who should matter more to you is a hard habit for some to implement.

Saying No is pretty damn easy.

COVID Outbreak on 100% Vaxxed Ship: Should Unvaxxed Military Get Their Jobs Back?

There are (at least) two rival explanations for why veterans lost their jobs for refusing the vaccine… and the justifiable reason just had a big hole blown through it.

The military, despite any protestations of the hard left, has one primary objective. To remain a lethal enough force that (a) other countries will think long and hard before picking a fight with us and (b) that it can protect both the American homeland — and our interests elsewhere — by hitting our adversaries with the kind of on-demand overwhelming force that gives teeth to any threats we make through diplomacy.

Sometimes you just have to "Man Up" and confess. Genius Award Winner.

ECEMBER 20--A Florida Man denied ownership of baggies containing cocaine and methamphetamine that cops found “wrapped around his penis” during a search early Saturday morning, according to arrest affidavits.

Investigators say Patrick Florence, 34, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped around 4 AM for traveling without headlights or tail lights on a Clearwater roadway. The driver, Darius Owens, 27, was subsequently arrested on DUI and marijuana possession charges.

A search of the vehicle turned up a handgun under Florence’s seat, leading to his arrest on a pair of felony weapons charges. Florence denied ownership of the .38 Special, reported cops who noted that the ex-con’s rap sheet includes “dozens of felony convictions” which barred him from possessing firearms and ammunition.

They're irresponsible idiots with money and decision making, and if you loan them money, they will not pay you back. If you help them out, their need will expand.

There have been, over the years, several near fist fights at my family church. And yep, it's Southern Baptist.

I learned early on the church politics are just as bad as regular politics, and oft worse.

When I was a kid, my father was a deacon. One Sunday morning, after service was over, a little girl came up and kicked my father in the shins. Turned out she had been hearing her father, also a deacon, bad mouth my father over some controversy of the day.

She kicked the Bad Man for him, of course.

I don't think even German has a word for this astonishing, endless, relentless piling of one baseless "intervention" upon another, this tweaking of all equally meaningless "policies" to prevent that which has likely already happened and is unpreventable in general. Years ago, a smart, witty, charming, and impecunious friend of mine came to me and explained that the Handy-Dandy E-Z Loan Company would lend him a few thousand dollars that he needed, if I would just cosign the loan.

I replied: "Of course they will. If I cosign, they're not lending the money to you. They're lending the money to me."

168 A quick update on something I posted about a week or two ago: some of you will remember back in November when one of the stories involved firearms attorney Andrew Branca, and Branca himself posted in the thread and made an offer for AoSHQ folks. Well, like a fool, I took him up on it. I got the free download book, of course, and also spent an additional roughly $60 to buy three hardcopy volumes of his Law of Self Defense books to give as gifts. Since then, the email address I used to place the order has been constantly and relentlessly spammed by Branca's company, and no books ever arrived. After a while and an inquiry, I was provided with a tracking number, which has now been in "Shipping Label Created, USPS Awaiting Item" status for three weeks.

I am left to conclude that Branca is a crook and a huckster and a fraud. He is, however, no fool. The only fool was me, for giving him my money, a mistake I'll not make again, and which I will vociferously encourage others to not make.

174 He's a Democrat career politician. He'll say whatever his pals in the media will get a majority of stupid people to believe. The reality is the Democrat party is at least as incompetent as the Republican party, they just have better media and far too many people including those who should know better fall for it all the time.

Posted by: JackStraw at December 27, 2021 10:46 PM

The sad thing is, no matter how many people on the right want to claim that "no one watches/trusts/believes the media", everything the right/GOP does is based on how it will play with the media. Because the media still has the most power and influence in society, no matter what the ratings say.

It's why the majority of political people were so against Trump in 2016. He was not following any of the political consultant suggestions of how to run a campaign. "He can't take position X, because that's too divisive", "he can't say X, because the media will use it against us", etc. Even after he pulled off a major upset, people on the right were still uneasy about his "mean tweets". Not because he was saying anything wrong, but because the media was using them to smear the GOP.

186 I still say we don't know how the rank and file police and soldier would react to "crackdown" Australian type orders. All we know so far is that the top brass is corrupt, the Capitol Police and FBI are corrupt, and that cops won't risk their jobs and pensions to defend corporation and neighborhood property against their orders, and that National Guard will stand around defending a fence against noone. It's a much bigger step for them to go out and go after what is basically their people. I think the Junta knows this, which is why the coercion is threats in the media that never happen actually instead of Australian type actions.

203 If I were an elected official in Portland, I'd be getting a bit nervous. Someone posted on Portland Reddit - the first paragraph of which was:

Last night I was held at gunpoint, over a fucking $20 bill. Ive had my window smashed out, twice, in the past 6 weeks, for nothing, in a fucking parking garage mind you. And about 3 months ago, a vagrant drug addict took a 2x4 to my entire (brand new) car for no reason as well.

He's moving to the suburbs.

This post has generated over 1200 comments, the vast majority supporting what the guy was saying, and more than 1600 net upvotes.

The pro-Antifa moderators of Portland Reddit took the post down, but then thought better of it, and put it back up.

244 They already knew that they were going to lose in court. Biden even said he didn't have the authority to enforce the mandates back when he first announced that the mandates were coming. I think this is more of a "We were kinda hoping that this thing would have resolved itself by now, and we're out of ideas, but there are too many hysterical Karens out there who won't let it go. So we're going to make it the states' problem, and wash our hands of it."

Which doesn't help all the people fired from their jobs over the past year due to COVID protocols (military, "healthcare" industry, corporations, etc).

I disagree that they thought this was going to be over by now. I believe this was all to usher in vaccine passports and China-style social credit system. The Great Reset. And that still hasn't been stopped. They are slow-walking all of this stuff. When there is no one on the right (in a position of influence), not even Trump or DeSantis (who supports "vaccines", just not mandates), standing up to "vaccines", we have a problem.

Nope. Crime spikes only pause and delay the leftward drift of urban governance. It'll take something otherworldly to move the needle back to center in any meaningful way.

310 you'd lose middle class whites to the suburbs en masse

That is the problem - 70% of the people in the Portland metro live in the burbs already, and the dissatisfied will vote with their feet, like I did.

OTOH, it will be fun when the leftists can no longer point to rising real estate prices in Portland as proof that Portland is doing great.

A big business park area in an adjacent suburb already has higher office lease rates than downtown Portland.

Thanks, found this. He didn't ban mandates, he banned mandates without exemptions.

https://abcn.ws/3qqUjNX

The new law prevents businesses from having vaccine mandates unless they allow workers to opt out for medical reasons, religious beliefs, immunity based on a previous infection, regular testing or an agreement to wear protective gear. The state health department, which is led by Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo, who opposes mandates, will have authority to define exemption standards. [ ... ]

The bill also includes fines for businesses that fire a worker without allowing the exemptions. Additionally, it bars schools and governments from having vaccine mandates and allows parents to sue schools with masking requirements. A separate bill blocks the public release of records regarding state investigations of vaccine policies in businesses.

367 Guys I have a question.

Bought an 07 4Runner. Seems to run great except when under load. Going up hills on the interstate, for example, it doesn't have the pep to pass another car. It won't go over 2000 rpms when I drive it. Ever. Shudders a little when going from 35-45mph.

Took it to the shop today. They said they couldn't find the issue. Got it up to 80mph and 6000rpms and the engine runs great.

They charged me $100 for this.

Now I'm wondering if it could be the spark plugs, and I don't know if they checked them. Is it unreasonable for me to call and ask them to check the spark plugs tomorrow under the same $100 diagnostic fee? Was that likely part of their test or did they just hook up the computer?

Before I bought the car it had an engine light on. The previous shop said that was engine coils. This shop said coils are fine. I think the code was random misfires caused by a bad battery, which I've had replaced.

I know, I know. Y'all aren't mechanics. But if you have strongly worded hot takes on it, I'm open to those too!

More people have died with covid during the Biden presidency now than died with covid during the Trump presidency.

The reality is nothing we have done has had any real impact on covid. It has all been cosmetic theater bullshit, especially masking, which clearly has virtually zero impact. This has all been clear to anyone with a functional brain since last fall at the latest.

Democrats used covid to get independent & suburban voters to turn on Trump. They dragged Biden across the finish line from his basement by claiming they'd "follow the science" & "shut down the virus." It was all deceitful bullshit. And most in media were happy to spread the lie.

Hah!

That actually happened a few times at one bar where I worked. Which resulted in Legalities and Increased Insurance Premiums.

I was good at talking the obnoxious gonna-fight drunks outside to the back parking lot using my Native Guile and Lies.

Then Big Ray could take over. Cheaper, easier, more pleasant all-round.

387 got to the pumphouse, tightened the coupling and all was good. Now the grandson had wandered out to the above ground pool and was testing the ice and was successful. So Grandpa decided to test the ice also. With grandson safely on the deck I tested it. and it held! For 1 sec. at that point grandpa joined the polar bear club, with 30 lbs of winter clothing on...grandson busted a gut while I dragged my ass onto the deck. So even in my old age, I can serve as an excellent example.

388 After almost 50 years of reading about WW2, with a special interest in naval operations in the Pacific theater, I finally noticed, tonight, for the very first time, that all of the big 6 Japanese carriers in the Kido Butai which hit Pearl Harbor, all but the Soryu had their islands/bridges built on the PORT, not starboard side of the ship. American carriers of course have theirs built on the starboard side, which is right and just.

How the Hell did I miss such a thing? "Attention to detail saves lives!!!" screams Chief Francis at OCS in 1988.

Talk about a total fail of observational skills.

Anyway, back to whatever everyone is talking about.

Engine codes, at first are almost always pollution control.
You know how to pull codes? If not, O'Reilly's and Advance Auto do it for free.
Next thing, if no codes, check pressure in each cylinder. Again, free rentals at most auto shops. Variable cylinder pressure? Spiff it up, and sell it.
Posted by: MkY

Ditto on the variable cylinder pressure; it means you have either valve problems (the over head cam has to be removed and the valves reground), or maybe a cracked head or a burned cylinder.

But it might just be bad fuel, a dirty fuel filter, or a dirty air filter. Or just sparkplugs (but the sparkplugs now last over 100K miles). It could also mean dirty fuel injectors. I like to use Techron in the gas at least twice a year, to help clean up the fuel (water) and clean the injectors.

Mere guesses on my part: refusal to go over 2000 RPM could mean the computer has gone into limp-home mode because it sensed a serious fault. The shudder could be a slipping clutch within the automatic transmission, which could trigger the limp mode. Worn spark plugs could cause it to lose power on hills, but it would miss randomly, and be jerky.

I would take it to an independent shop. Never hurts to get a second opinion.

This is part of the agreement. I don't understand people who can't just follow the agreement. If you don't like the terms, don't fly. It doesn't matter if it's right, wrong, based on science or based on bullshit. That's the deal.

This is where I fall. I have no interest in flying for the time being. The cramped quarters of an airplane are bad enough, having to wear a mask would be miserable. So I don't fly. During the mask mandate, I also spent a lot less time in stores.

Same here. I stopped frequenting any place that mandated mask-wearing the last 22+ months. I also choose not to fly.

That said, while I agree that flouting the mask-wearing rules on airplanes is being an asshole, I think times like these call for people being assholes to make the point to reject tyrannical non-sensical rules like this. Because if everyone against the rules just decided to not fly anywhere, the media would just spin that to claim airlines were suffering not due to protest of the mask mandates, but because "people are afriad to fly because of COVID".

----

You've got it backwards. There were two carriers in the Pearl Harbor raid that had their islands on the wrong side. Kaga was one of them. Either Hiryu or Soryu was the other.

Since Japanese carrier doctrine was that carriers would work in pairs, the idea was that putting the islands on opposite sides would streamline certain operations when carriers with opposing islands were operating alongside each other. Then it was realized that planes losing control on a carrier deck had a tendency to veer to Port. This was learned after the first four IJN fleet carriers were finished. So the subsequent Shokaku-class ships (Shokaku and Zuikaku) had their islands on the "planes don't crash into the island" side of the flight deck.

I spent Jan-Aug 1998 in Kansas City, MO. Worked an internship at TWA at their engine overhaul facility at the KCI Airport. Loved my time there. Lived in apartments about 5 minutes from the Airport. Discovered a nature park I think a bit north of the area with a 4-5 mile paved trail that went around a lake that I went to almost every day to rollerblade.

Meant to go back sooner, but I only made it back in 2015 to go to a Bears-Chiefs game at Arrowhead with my brother and his wife when he was stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas. Had an awesome time and then had some awesome Chicago-style pizza from Rosati's in Overland Park after the game.

You also might have old spark plug wires, that may have intermittent shorting going on.

I think Alberta Oil Peon may be on to a big part of the problem. You may have a slipping, old clutch, and on a hill, the computer is making the engine "limp". The computer may be limiting rpm (power) due to a slipping clutch. I think that's what AOP said. In the shop, in neutral, on level ground, the engine revs fine.

529 Re: 367 by Plague Rat:

Bucking that feels like a miss under power is often the coil packs. It depends on the year and make but they are usually one per cylinder on newer vehicles. When they fail, they will set a check engine light code but when they are starting to go bad they will often fail to fire once in a while depending on weather and temp and usually under accel at higher speeds. Generally aftermarket ones (not OEM but the ones you find on eBay) aren't that expensive and they are usually accessible and just need a connector disconnected and one bolt taken off to replace. First thing I would do is to get a cheaper set and replace them all. On the 4.6s in my Crown Vic type cars it costs about $50 bucks and takes me a half hour of not strenuous work to do it. Just don't go to the likes of AutoZone or the dealer, they will charge you $50 to $100 each for basically the same part. If you look up coil pack replacement on You Tube for your vehicle you will probably find a video that will show you how hard it will be. Good luck!

That switch proved to be interesting. If you haven't noted, it switches both sides of the line, can be completely disassembled should contacts need burnishing. Another thing I discovered, the 'On' indicator is a neon lamp. As a matter of minor interest, I checked the firing voltage, 51 VAC. Also, the terminals (conveniently 'insert' screw terminals) are marked L(ine) and N(eutral). Now, if there is a convention for line and neutral connection for polarized zip cord, I am unaware of it...but a curious thing that I meant to research.

Oh yes, indeed. This generational stuff does not apply to all. See Strauss and Howe and that 4th Turning Turning stuff and the generational archetypes.

That fascinates me (and there's no question we're in a Crisis phase now). Basically, each generation in the cycle has it's good points and bad points, which sow the seeds for the cycle.

I see it in a similar, but slightly different way.

Sociologists call it the "Three Generation Phenomenon". The first immigrant generation never fully adapts, linguistically or otherwise. Their children want to be More American than American. The third generation starts to wonder and want to know more about the grandparents' generation and culture.

I think this applies to generations entirely from the US, whose grandparents were freaks back in the 60s-70s.

Tom Wolfe's "A Man in Full" dealt with some of this.

This stuff is fascinating, and I think they're on to something, but don't quite have the full picture of it. There's an element of curve-fitting there, which I don't like.

Nonetheless, their hypothesis is that American history is driven by generational cycles that take 4 generations to complete. Every 80 years or so, American has a Crisis, an existential crisis that questions her going forward as a going concern. This is a result of those cycles, with each cycle sowing the seeds of its own destruction.

By "curve fitting", I mean this. You can take the data points of the Dow, the stock market, however you like to define, and fit that curve to as many digits of precision as you like.

That is, you can come up with a function that will match the DOW curve over the last 100 years to match as closely as you desire.

And that will do you exactly Zero good in predicting what the DOW will do next week. Past performance is no indicator of future results, as the disclaimer goes.

It is such a moron movie, I love the sign outside the brain dispensary which declares, after 5:00 p.m. slip brains through the slot in the door. This should be modified to after 10:00 p.m.

Gene Hackman's ad-libbing "I was about to make espresso ..." is hilarious. Mart Feldman did steal the show.

I must say, I'm listening to that Ludwig 5th stuff on some pretty shitty computer speakers. To really get the magnificence of that, you need some audio equipment with some what ya call dynamic range. Able to go from whisper-quite to wide-ass open with little distortion.

You want that eruption of joy from sorrow to be flawless, with no clipping and other distortion. You want the explosion of all them fiddles and horns to be just perfect.

608 Jim, how are we going to resolve this, I cook a few things well, otherwise I am quite average, I have only ever held a gun once in my life and I was nine years old and a friend of my Dad's who was an old time sheriff handed me a little Derringer that certain ladies used to shoot and he assured me it was quite lethal. I want to make soup and learn to shoot at the same time. I have an elderly uncle who surprised me with an early inheritance check just days ago. My trip to the MoMeet is now paid for, but I don't know what curveballs life is going to throw at me this year.

Posted by: Debby Doberman Schultz at December 28, 2021 03:08 AM (a4EWo)

609 Jim, it needs a bit more flavoring, not quite sure what it is, but we can figure that out, I am tempted to add some worcestershire sauce but I'm not sure if that's it, maybe a bit of heat, I don't know, I'll work on it.

610 Beethoven, while deaf, was to sound what was Michelangelo and DeVinci as to sight, touch, texture, feel and design, when blessed of all of their senses.

It would be like Ace, typing with all of the input of Helen Keller, and the output of Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas, and the like. But without the links to them, their pages, their books and their music files.

Trust, m'dear. We will resolve this all within trust. I did not fail to drop you at your hotel, nor pick you up the next morning at the appointed time. Nor fail to see to it that you enjoyed a rather pleasant breakfast.

Likewise, you shall succeed at the firing line, and you shall succeed at the stove. It has been decreed, and thus, it shall be so. Don't MAKE ME get Miklos involved in this?

614 Miley, Yup. I think tomatoes are in order and I like mushrooms too, soy sauce is a kind of ninja ingredient, forget about worcestershire, soy is probably the way to go. I know someone who took our favorite Italian restaurant sauce to a chemical analyst to find out what was in it and soy sauce was the only unusual ingredient that popped up.

I know where to get certain kinds of mushrooms.

They like to grow on "cow patties" and there are wild cattle just down the river.

630 Byrd going on trial would be the biggest farce anyway. You'll have a judge, prosecutor and defense attorney all on the same side, and likely a jury picked to be filed with partisans. They'll be no cameras allowed, and only carefully selected media, to make sure the trial is a joke, where they'll paint Babitt as a Rambo figure storming the capital, and all the state media will make sure to plaster the airwaves with similar stories.

In the end he'll quickly be found not guilty and then be given a promotion or giant severance package for his troubles.

We need to just hope Republicans take control in 2022 and have the balls to clean house and also investigate the highly partisan Capitol police.

Posted by: Rbastid at December 28, 2021 03:43 AM (sPpzQ)

631 Byrd should be sued civilly - at least then the prosecutor is not pro-gubmint.
