I don't think they have Christmas in Australia. Vegemitenacht is what they celebrate. The night The Great Roo delivers vegemite to all the children, especially the bad ones. I could be wrong though. The Australian language is hard to understand and presents certain translation problems.

Posted by: Infidel My advice is don*t buy a Dell. The laptop I purchased is a total piece of crap. My college student child had to purchase a course of study specific high end Dell. Don't know which model you got, and while none of my Dell systems have died outright over the years, I've had a few lesser problems. They're not perfect. The reason I keep buy Dells though is they give you the service manual. If you're handy with a screwdriver you can take their laptops completely apart and replace every component. Two things. Look the model up and read the reviews? CAREfully go over the specs. My current desktop system is no longer OK to buy in Calif, because they say it uses too much energy (meaning, its too damn powerfull)... Dells are OK, depending on the specs of WHAT you buy. Just like any other computer company. Posted by: Romeo13 at December 25, 2021 02:55 AM (oHd/0) 25

Hey Pixy - What is your opinion on 'ethnicity' facial recognition? Say you had 20 photographs of an individual and while they did have some divergence - in the end the majority leaned in one direction. Posted by: Traitor Joe's Military Surplus at December 25, 2021 03:02 AM (dQvv7) 27
26 Hey Pixy -
What is your opinion on 'ethnicity' facial recognition? Say you had 20 photographs of an individual and while they did have some divergence - in the end the majority leaned in one direction. I'd show it a picture of a grapefruit with Post-It note with the word "Irish" stuck to it and see what it says. Those systems seem to work as long as they're fed data that's within the boundaries expected by their designers, but go completely haywire when the data goes outside those boundaries. (sips coffee) Yep, I'm workin' today. It's fine. It will be slow. Was watching 'Holidays at Murray State 2021' on PBS, briefly. They're wearing masks while singing. Dumb. Posted by: Pixy Misa at December 25, 2021 03:08 AM Thanks. I think you can't expect anything accurate from one image alone, but it seems to work the best when fed multiple images. In the end, in the example I tried, once I disregarded the outliers, it was remarkably close to the results of a DNA map as far as location and percentages. Christmas seemed to come faster than expected this year. I guess it's because NYC just hasn't felt very christmassy the last few years between Covid and BLM justice looting the place, since everything closes at like 7PM. Also having a week from vacation starting until Christmas cut in to the usual time I'd roam around after work and enjoy the sights.
After a week of probably having Covid I reached the point where i have no real sickness symptoms (didn't have much anyway, just stuffy, little achy a day or two, and headaches the last few days) but now I really can't taste anything unless its strong, which blows the most since tomorrow is a day of chowing down. If I got this damn cold two weeks earlier or two weeks later i would have had 2 more damn weeks of paid vacation. Posted by: Rbastid at December 25, 2021 03:23 AM (8gEhb) 31

"Is it even worth working on open source software anymore?"
1990-2020 - Open source software is the future. I don't like the corporate machine, so I will write code to be free as in beer. Itt is the true socialist/communist way. Nobody should be making money from ideas, it all needs to be free and open. 2020-today - Why should I develop OSS and not get paid for it? All these companies are stealing my hard work. I am giving away this code for anybody to use, and they are using it! I don't want a real job, I want to sit in my parents basement and get those big bucks and stock options while claim I have a moral high ground while fighting for the socialist/communist way. If you don't like how open source software is used, stop writing it and demanding money for what is supposed to be "free" and "open". Posted by: nohone at December 25, 2021 03:55 AM (HlOZV) 35
A lot of companies would be less terrible if everyone had to spend a day a month performing the shitty jobs at the very roots of the corporate tree. I'll go it one step further -- every teenager / young person ought to spend a month collecting garbage, or cleaning public restrooms, or cutting grass in public spaces, or digging ditches, or washing dishes. There is dignity in work, even menial work. Dare I say it, there is egalitarianism in it. Enough of the internships, compensated or not, into which you got because Daddy or Mommy. A Merry Christmas morning to all!!! Chekov, the Cat of Cats, wishes good cheer to all!
(Well, actually, he doesn't; he wishes I'd give him his breakfast. But let's be imaginative and picture him spreading benedictions everywhere.) Miss Linda and I went to church last evening, had our usual Friday night pizza, and watched some YooToob vids about cats -- Siberians in particular, and Maine Coons too. I'm up to work out in a while -- I plan to drive to the riverfront when it gets light and trot along the bike path, just for a change. After I clean up, I need to wrap Miss Linda's gifts. I'm good at that -- but they are different shapes, and I don't have many boxes. Oh, well. I may have to wait to open and smoke the pipe I bought myself until this evening. Again, oh, well. It's Christmas. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at December 25, 2021 06:12 AM (c6xtn) 67

Christmas falling on a Saturday or Sunday always seemed so weird. You'd already be off from school or (most) work, so it didn't seem right, like you'd lost a day of the break. Two days if Christmas Eve was Saturday. And remember, when I was a kid, we didn't have endless holidays, spring and fall breaks, etc. Labor Day, then nothing until Thanksgiving, then a long slog until Christmas-New Year's; in Da Swamp we got the Monday and Tuesday of Mardi Gras; Good Friday at Easter; then an even longer slog, it seemed, until school let out for summer in late May. Losing 2 days from Christmas seemed like a gyp!

Merry Christmas!
God's greatest gift The compassion of the Father is ever moving towards the world. He so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, and from the great sea of His love He is aways giving us all we can use. That is the measure of the gift of Christ we can use, all that we can hold, filling out hearts and being, occupying, blessing, comforting, ever opening new fields before the heart and mind that we may look up and come more into God. It is a wondrous grace. It is a mystery which we can understand only as we come into possession of the Spirit. That is why God says that "spiritual things are spiritually discerned." To know anything of the redemption of Christ we must enter into Him. If we would know about the measure of the gift, we must speak more of His Spirit's enlightenment in our hearts." Dr. Henry Foster Physician and Christian He lived until the early 1900's and started a sanitarium in the Finger Lakes Region of NY for depressed and overworked ministers, missionaries and others. Skip, if you play a CD on your computer, download the VLC Player. It's free and downloads fast, and it will play just about anything from movies and CDs to stuff you download from the 'Net.
There is a neat little utility, too, called youtube-dl.exe. Search for it and download it. You run it from a DOS command window, the "Run" command that brings up the black window, you remember that. Type "youtube-dl" followed by a space, then paste the URL of the video and press Enter. It downloads to that directory on your hard drive, or if you create a config text file, to the location you specify. This includes supposedly non-downloadable YooToobs, too. I don't know if it works on Macs. But VLC has a version for Mac as well. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at December 25, 2021 07:18 AM (c6xtn) 158

My husband and I are getting our J&J boosters tomorrow but we both either have a slight cold or omicron Covid. Can't get a test so we don't know. No fever just sneezing and a little gunky throat and runny nose. I wonder if we should cancel the boosters. Do any of his have experience with this?

Posted by: Jaimo Probably omicron? It has more cold-like symptoms. Few get a fever or lost taste/smell. I would get tested before boosted. But understand that the boosters protection is limited and you will eventually get omicron. Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at December 25, 2021 08:11 AM (bKdTl) 215

Psychologist Stanley Milgram found that 80% of people do not have the psychological and moral resources to defy an authority's order, no matter how legitimate the order is. Only 20% have critical capacity.
The Milgram Experiment - The Milgram experiment was a shock experiment by Stanley Milgram in the early 60's that tested people's willingness to shock others if instructed by an authority figure. Conclusion: 65% of the participants would kill someone if an authority figure told them to. The Asch Experiment - The Asch experiments were a series of experiments by Solomon Asch in the 50's that tested the extent to which social pressure from a majority group could affect a person to conform. Posted by: Colin at December 25, 2021 08:28 AM It's not really that so much as it is the airlines test their people for covid often and if they test positive they have to go home and stay there for 14 days or until they get two negative tests in a row. Posted by: Mrs. Peel at December 25, 2021 08:10 AM I finished watching the TV mini-series "Dr. Death" yesterday about Dr. Christopher Duntsch. That true story combined with what we have experienced last 2 years with the Plandemic, I will never trust the "healthcare" industry again. Doctor played by Joshua Jackson. Also has Alec Baldwin and Christian Slayter as doctors trying desperately to work within the system to get him stopped, only to find the system completely broken. At the end, it states that as many as 440,000 deaths due to medical errors occur every year. During one episode they specifically blame the state of Texas for implementing Tort Reform for making it difficult to hold healthcare industry accountable. As patients entering the operating room of Dr. Christopher Duntsch for routine spinal surgeries start leaving permanently maimed or end up dead, two fellow surgeons and a young Assistant District Attorney set out to stop him. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9179552/ Posted by: Clyde Shelton at December 25, 2021 08:46 AM (Do5/p) 267

That stat is as accurate as the fauci flu death count. If you die, and there is some sort of "error" in your medical record, you died due to a medical error. Stage 4 cancer, liver failure and bleeding brain? Yeah, but the nurse gave 325mg tylenol instead of 650. Medical error!
Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at December 25, 2021 09:03 AM Yeah, the range they stated was pretty large. Stated 20,000 to as many as 440,000. Regardless of how many it is, the true story of Dr. Death was horrifying. Not just that this lunatic was allowed to continue butchering and killing people, but that the industry's love of money trumps the best interests of patients. As I said, combining that true story with what we have all witnessed throughout the Plandemic, I am never trusting anyone in the "healthcare" industry again. I'll have that luxury since I am alone and will never be married or have a family. So I just have to worry about me. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at December 25, 2021 09:08 AM (Do5/p) 305

How do they know it's omicron? Posted by: grammie winger at December 25, 2021 09:02 AM At this point it's an educated guess. If the R= value of Classic Covid was 1.4, and Delta was around 2.something, Omicron is somewhere in the range of 3 to 5, possibly higher. R= reproduction. Subsequent infections from one case. If cases skyrocket to levels never seen before, it's almost certainly Omicron. That's what I'm seeing in my county. Highest levels ever. But very few deaths. The American system is garbage because for every doctor there are 20 nurses, ancillary staff, and administrators telling him he can't do it that way. Then when things go south, it is the doctor who "botched" it. This has nothing to do with Dr Death. That is a completely different situation. Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at December 25, 2021 09:21 AM Understood. That still does not give me comfort if I ever had to put my life in the hands of the "healthcare" system. Prior to the Plandemic, I naively thought that doctors and nurses had the best interest of their patients as the top priority. And it may be that the majority do. But the facts show from the last 2 years of the Plandemic, that they are completely helpless to prevent administrators and politicians from taking over the process. Hospitals denying treatments and people having to go to court just to get something as simple as Ivermectin. Hospitals not having the correct treatment protocols for COVID, even 22 months later. Hospitals making money from the CARES Act. That's unforgivable. And downright horrifying. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at December 25, 2021 09:26 AM (Do5/p) 337

Each of us, including developers, had to answers calls on the tech support line once a month. It was a pain in the tuchus, but it kept everyone in touch with the customers and their complaints. Some of the customers were simply too lazy to RTFM, but others pointed out bugs that needed fixing pronto. It's also good to put a face (or a voice) to the people for whom one is building the software. As for Richard Stallman, the guy is a first-class nut ... but he gave the world GNU C, and that alone puts him head and shoulders above most of his detractors.
