UTOPIAN DREAMS

Get a load of this:

Apparently, the animation is a yogurt commercial with all of the yogurt edited out. So Magee turned it into a late-night dorm-room bull session fueled by lack of sleep, naivete, and weed.

I would point out to the dorm room guys before they nodded off: this cartoon doesn't show everybody. This is definitely a "haves" vs. "have-nots" view, whether they acknowledge it or not. What you're looking at in this cartoon here are the "haves".

But there are a number of things they're not showing you, namely, lithium mines, rare earth processing facilities, farms, factories, steel mills and all of the rest of the manufacturing infrastructure necessary to make and maintain all of the cool stuff shown in this animated fantasy cartoon.

Oh, and if you want to make things out of plastic, you need: petroleum, and lots of it. So those dirty, unsightly oil wells aren't going anywhere.

The fact of the matter is, much the world is a dirty, smelly, disgusting place and must be maintained by dirty, smelly, disgusting work, work that is absolutely necessary.

So my question to all of the airhead utopian socialists is, "so, comrades, what are you willing to do to bring about the Glorious Socialist Revolution? Are you willing to sling bales of hay, work a 12-hour factory shift, spending all day on a ranch mucking out sheep stalls? Do you really think the Glorious Revolution needs your gender-studies degree? Because what it needs is people who are willing to work and work hard. Duty now for the future, comrade! Oh wait, you thought you were going to be awarded some administrative position where you sit behind a desk on your fat butt in a comfortable office all day moving papers around and telling other people what to do? Did you really think that? Because, let me tell you, those are the jobs that everybody wants, so they're really in short supply. Meanwhile, crops lie unharvested, the factories are idle", there are mouths to feed and poverty to alleviate. Prove your worth to the Revolution by toiling away in nameless obscurity doing work that is necessary but most likely will not be recognized."

Because if the dorm room guys weren't so ignorant of history, they would know that the kind of people who make it to the top of the heap in a socialist society are the most ruthless, cut-throat, violent amoral people imaginable. It won't be them. They don't have the guts to kill people who stand in their way. They will be up against the wall in the second group of executions, the ones that inevitably occurs when the Revolution begins to devour itself.

It's always fun to ask commie utopian dreamers, "OK then, say you've set up your socialist utopia. Who cleans the toilets?" It's a very simple question, yet they don't want to answer it. Because if they answer the question at all (and most don't), the answer always boils down to "someone else, not me."

Wednesday Who Dis: I would think that Lizabeth Scott would be better known, as she appeared in films opposite such A-listers as Humphrey Bogart, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas and Charlton Heston. Bur she never achieved the level of stardom that would be expected. She eventually lefty Hollywood and got into real estate. As did Stuart Whitman, who amassed a personal fortune of $100 million thanks to his shrewd investing. He appeared with Scott in the western film Silver Lode in 1954.

23 So the equipment shown in the ad would require a ridiculous amount of power. You cannot, mathematically, get that much energy at the surface level of the earth.

You could, in theory, do so with a large enough solar array in orbit, beaming energy down via a mazer. But...that tech is banned by treaty because it is also an effective space weapon.

And if your alignment is a little off...oops, just wiped out NYC. Sorry everyone!

27 The utopians never seem to realize they will have to work hard to get the limitless, free energy required to drive their utopia. That apple picker? LOTS of energy.

Oh, and the apple picking jobs? Gone. (And the automated apple picker apparently goes 10 times as slow, so don't expect lots of fresh apples in the proletariat grocery stores.) Of course, now they're free to contemplate their navel and evolve into non-corporeal energy. They might die before then, though, since they don't have meaningful jobs to get adequate food.

Anyone else note that the future (according to that video) is vegan? Uh, yeah, now I *know* the proletariat are not getting enough nutrition.

What's really funny to me is that these people never got the backstory on Star Trek, just the "present" of it. They see the limitless 'clean' energy, the instant wonder of making food from any old atom, the floaty cars and spaceships. They don't remember that it all came out of a horrid time of elitists forcing their ideas onto the masses. You know... just like their 'elites'....

Do you really think the Glorious Revolution needs your gender-studies degree?

The gender studies folks will have the same choice most other people will have in the new technocratic order as envisioned by the WEF types. There are three classes of people in their vision:
1. The rulers, to whom all material progress accrues

3. Pod people, drinking Soylent and living an ersatz life in the metaverse 20 hours per day

I disagree with you philosophically, Fen. Not only is there nothing wrong with pursuing a humanities degree, it is an admirable pursuit that helps you learn how to think, how to understand where you are and how you got there, and the underpinnings of your civilization and those that broke up on the rocks before it.

The humanities is a noble pursuit. It is not job training. The humanities are now, sadly, dead. The humanities have been destroyed by the academic class and their weird and grotesque experiments and perversions. It's horrifying. The humanities are important and vital and valuable in their own right, and they've been subverted to the point of destruction.

Somehow the knowledge that women used to spend every waking hour doing "fiber arts" and food preparation and barely managing to keep their family clothed and fed escaped them. Idle hands do the devils work. Or at least every child over the age of five is carding wool by candle light while listening to their oldest sister read dire proverbs about not being lazy.

There's nothing stopping a one of them from their compassionate utopia NOW except a reluctance of meeting their own needs entirely with enough left over to support someone else TOO. 229 There's nothing wrong with pursuing a humanities degree. It's just that the people doing that need to realize that the job prospects are limited and they shouldn't act pretentious about it.

I agree, although these days its not easy to get a humanities degree that has a shred of respectability or reason involved in it.

In no way can the technocratic dream of the WEF types that envisions a world of all assets accruing to the cartelized ruling class, produced by automated machinery maintained by engineers, and the rest of the people in pods living in the metaverse actually succeed. It is the vision, but it will fail as they continue to try to implement it. And when it fails, the blood cost will be astounding. Their vision is insane and cannot work, but it sure can get people killed as they either comply with it and commit suicide or launch revolution against it and make the streets flow with blood. There are many possible outcomes, but "success" is not one of them.

what's fascinating about those giant bugs (there were also dragonflies with 2' wingspans) is that insects, which don't have an active lung system, required much higher oxygen levels to reach large sizes. It's believed that in the carboniferous period, atmospheric oxygen levels hit 35%, rather than the 21% we have today.

There was a short story by Asimov that touched on this in his "I, Robot" collection. Robots were eventually sent up to the platform housing the beam in order to make sure it stayed on target. The robots ended up developing some very odd ideas, but they did the job even in the middle of a solar storm that would have otherwise caused the beam to cause mass destruction on the Earth's surface.

Real world? We don't have robots or computers that are that advanced.

256 Here's the thing. They don't have the whole millipede. They just have a section of it. Based on what millipedes are like now, they extrapolated the likely full length to get the 240cm version.

The problem is, without the whole bug, there's just not any way of knowing how long it really was. It might have just been really wide and short. or 3 times that long.

Most of paleontology is done using this kind of extrapolation. They don't have a full T-Rex skeleton, they have bits and fill in the gaps based on guesswork and usual physical structure, for example. Its not only plausible but extremely likely that they've gotten a lot wrong (and have in the past, needing to greatly revise their reconstructions).

People these days tend to err heavily in the omnibus fallacy: if you're bad in one area, you're bad in everything and must be shunned.

I don't care what kind of horrible monster a classical composer might have been, that doesn't make their music any less beautiful. I can see why, for example, holocaust victims might not care to hear Wagner, but not because of anything the man did personally. That has to do with context.

But you take the good and reject the bad, that's how humanity has always worked. To do otherwise is an insane delusion that somehow we'll become a people who are without sin or flaw.

what's fascinating about those giant bugs (there were also dragonflies with 2' wingspans) is that insects, which don't have an active lung system, required much higher oxygen levels to reach large sizes. It's believed that in the carboniferous period, atmospheric oxygen levels hit 35%, rather than the 21% we have today.
Posted by: Tom Servo at December 27, 2021 12:05 PM (trdmm)

Even with high atmospheric oxygen, I can't imagine that would be enough to sustain a 50 kg insect. The internal organs would probably still be fairly nutrient-starved. I can't even imagine how CO2 would be able to exit such a creature without a strong circulatory system. Spiracles wouldn't be enough for it.

367 @256 Most of paleontology is done using this kind of extrapolation. They don't have a full T-Rex skeleton, they have bits and fill in the gaps based on guesswork and usual physical structure, for example. Its not only plausible but extremely likely that they've gotten a lot wrong (and have in the past, needing to greatly revise their reconstructions).

----

There are some fairly close to complete T-Rex skeletons out there. The most complete one is supposed to be 85 percent complete, while the second most is 70 percent complete. Given that, and given that the second skeleton likely has parts that the first skeleton doesn't (along with other bones discovered in other finds), I suspect the number of "guesswork" bones left for the T-Rex is likely quite small.

There are a number of dinosaurs, though, where we basically have a parts of a skull, and figure, "Well, it looks like this other dinosaur we have, so it probably was related, and looked sort of like this drawing here..."

And then two years later, someone else comes along and insists that the skull was really a juvenile of some other species...

368 Not only is Kwanzaa a fake made up holiday, as my liberal Jewish history professor pointed out, the winter festival it's roughly based on is a traditional celebration by a tribe which was known to European slavers as a reliable source of human chattle.

The African descendants here in America are being forced by whites to celebrate the traditions of those who sold their grandparents.

Yep, I remember those few mandatory credits we had to take in college. Those of us in engineering majors considered them blowoff classes. It was funny going to classes like freshman speech class and then later when I took Spanish 201 (I was able to test out of Span101 and 102 thanks to 4 years of Spanish in HS) and seeing people taking those courses so seriously. The contrast of atmosphere compared to engineering classes was stark as well. It felt like I was back in HS in those classes compared to the engineering classes.

This so-called 'Dr' reminds me of my daughter-in-law. A smug piece of crap. People like her would be called 'idiot savant' in before times but they now are more politely referred to as 'savant syndrome'. You know what else comes with savant syndrome? A low IQ and Asperger's. Throw that combination of smugness, low IQ, a steady diet of NPR, and a fondness for playing games, together with a weak chin, and I have zero clue what my son saw in her.

I will go to my grave before I'd ever refer to her as Dr.

While some guy who did well in HS but is a bit of a loner can't get a scholarship to a STEM college and get a Masters or PHD in like real chemistry yet this bing probably got a scholarship for the full bore just because she's female and going into being a Dr. of Dance and Disability like because we need so many of these.

Posted by: jakee308 at December 27, 2021 01:26 PM (3YVDU)

393 That's what happened with the Kmer Rouge. They rounded everyone up in the cities and herded them out into the rice paddies. Along the way when they'd stop for a while the Party leader would start questioning the people who were slow and falling behind about what their skills were. If they said anything that was no farm oriented and did not have any special farming skills; off to the ditch and BLAM. One shot and NEXT!

Estimated about 2-3 million died like that and the rest of the toll was taken over the few years they worked in the fields as they died from overwork and little food or someone in power got mad at them or just didn't like them so: BLAM. Soon the cities were deserted and all sorts of things started to fail then.

But that's communism for you. The details may be different but usually the commies start killing those they feel are parasites once the revolution is won. Sometimes with the help of those very parasites.
