CNN: Brandon's Ratings on the Economy Are Officially Lower Than Carter's

(CNN) President Joe Biden is struggling in the minds of the American public. While his approval rating is down on a slew of issues, his difficulties are perhaps most noticeable on the economy. Biden now sports the lowest net economic rating of any president at this point through their first term since at least Jimmy Carter in 1977. In the latest CNN/SSRS poll, Biden comes in with a 44% approval rating to 55% disapproval rating among registered voters on his economic performance. This makes for a -9 point net approval rating. The average of all polls taken in December is quite similar with Biden at -13 points on the economy. To put that in perspective, the average president at this point in the last 44 years (since we have been polling on the topic) had a net economic approval rating of +5 points. That means Biden's is 18 points worse than the average. ... [T]he issue of inflation hurting a president helps to put Biden's bad position in perspective. The public reaction now looks at least somewhat similar to how the public was reacting to another president under whom inflation was an issue: Carter. A lot of Republicans like to draw parallels between Carter (who was a one-term president) and Biden. And at least early on, when it comes to public perceptions of the economy and inflation, there are some similarities between them. Carter's economic net approval rating of -8 points in an early January 1978 CBS News/New York Times poll was the lowest around this point in a presidency before Biden's -13 points. The economy, and particularly inflation, was listed as the nation's top problem in a late October 1977 Gallup poll. Importantly, far more Americans (52%) in a November 1977 Time Magazine poll thought that Carter was not making a good start to fighting inflation than thought he was (21%). In other words, Americans felt his efforts were not enough to control inflation.

Americans all over are sitting down at their local greasy spoon and freaking out at the cost of a burger, fries and drink. And that's besides the prices at the gas pump.
I can't imagine that the restaurant business isn't going to further suffer from these price hikes. I know they have to pass on the price increase from their suppliers, but as a result many will just decide to cook at home.

There's a huge shopping complex near me that was built at the beginning of that JEF's admin. It was supposed to be 2 phases. They built the first, and a huge portion remained vacant. They eventually scrapped plans on the second phase, even though they'd already started some pads. Trump comes in and in under 2 years, the place is completely full, and then they start up with phase 2. Another mall started going in down the street.
Now? Phase 1 has lost many tenants, Phase 2 has stopped (again), all equipment has been removed. Don't know what's going on down the street, but they got a 7-11 and gas station that's mostly finished. The high density homes will most likely go in, but that might be it for now. A lot of downtown proper is booming - mostly because of the town being absorbed by San Jose. Most mom and pop places died.

The Biden administration on Wednesday extended a student loan moratorium that has allowed millions of Americans to put off debt payments during the pandemic.
Under the action, payments on federal student loans will remain paused through May 1. Interest rates will remain at 0% during that period, and debt collection efforts will be suspended. Those measures have been in place since early in the pandemic, but were set to expire Jan. 31.

With working from home since March 2020 and only leaving the house to pick up groceries once per week since that time, I need to fill up my Jeep Patriot maybe once every 3-4 weeks now. As opposed to about once per week in the before COVID times. So I won't feel it very much.
That said, gas shortages affect everything, even if someone does not have a car or drive anywhere. Anything delivered to stores via truck will be affected, anything delivered to homes (i.e. Amazon deliveries) will be affected. With everything now so dependant on gas supply, I am not looking forward to gas rationing.

This is a preposterous comparison. Under Carter, we faced the doulbe-whammy of both the second oil embargo and its effects on energy prices and the demand-pull effects resulting from a long period of untenable union contracts throughout the economy. Both had major inflationary side effects. Moreover, the world economy was still working through the hangover that resulted from decoupling the US from gold, which was not Carter's fault. Carter wasn't to blame for the economic issues that blossomed in his administration - and this is the only way it is fair to compare him to Biden.
Biden is dealing the problems of a global pandemic after having been left a deplorably bad overall condition by his predecessor. The people are unruly and refusing to cooperate with vital anti-pandemic measures. The Congress refuses to take vital steps to energize the economy through plans like the BBB agenda. His hands are tied both by the incompetence of the prior administration and by the recalcitrance of the people and the legislature.

A person of average intelligence can figure out the risk of dying or serious illness from COVID is not only comparably lower then other diseases, but for most age groups not at risk well below 1%. The risk of side effects like myocarditis is being found to be much higher, especially as the age gets younger. That and most people have seen or know someone who had it and gotten through it. It's not pleasant but it's not going to kill or hospitalize most people. Facts eventually won over pathos with many people. Not all. But many.

I've been WFH for about ten years, part-time WFH for seven or eight before that. It's really nice not having to buy gas more than once every month or so, and it's also nice having vehicles paid off that still have less than 50k or 60k on them. I save a lot of money by skipping other non-necessities as well, like soap and pants.
The thing is, when I *do* actually have to gas up a vehicle, I see the impact a lot more than I otherwise would. My frog is only occasionally in that pot, and so notices the temperature changes a lot more.

When Brandon was elected, I told Lady YD to expect a rampant inflationary spike, and she asked why. I said there were going to be a lot of things done to print more money, etc., but a big, huge problem was that fuel prices were going to explode immediately.
She was all "well, we don't drive much, and we're economical with the heat, so at least there's that."
So I explained how fuel prices affect *everything in the economy,* and it was like a light clicked on, because she hadn't really considered that angle.
A year later (a week ago), I asked the gas price after one of her trips to the gas station... she said "I don't know. I can't bring myself to look. I just pump and go."

The new admin continued those policies, but I'm laying blame on them for the much huger problem of the energy economy, and many other things. One I didn't even consider - that an Administration could cause a near-immediate crisis in the largest and most sophisticated transit system in world history, making a supply shortage at the same time as an inflationary spike, while the ladyboy in charge of the DoT nursed his gay baby on paid vacation. That was very special. But there's also lots more.

This is such a shame. Danny Meyer is one of the great restauranteurs and food entrepreneurs in America. He built his reputation on an outstanding customer experience, and great food. Huge fan of the original Shake Shack in Madison Square Park, but would rather go to McD's than the Shack for a burger today, to be honest.
Shake Shacks, if I remember correctly, are in mostly Blue cities, so he's probably going to get away with this nonsense.

My buddy and I have literally begun to take screenshots of tracking numbers where you see things sit in the same post office for 2 or 3 days before they even move. I've given up on even screaming at their customer service people anymore. It's just a sick joke.
California is the absolute worst. I had a package last month take 5 days to go from the guy who shipped it to a postal hub about a hundred miles away in California where it then took several more days to make it across the country to me

It's hit or miss around me. Walmart is constantly out of bacon and sausage when I go in there lately and eggs are often times wiped out. Stuff usually shows in a day or two but it's frustrating to have to keep going back. Worse one lately was gatorade. That stuff was gone for almost two weeks.

I’ve seen items supposedly leave the same node twice, hours or days apart. I started taking screenshots of those because they usually erase the earlier departure.
I’m pretty sure that the USPS tracking system uses the phrase “in transit… arriving on time” to mean “we’ve lost track of it somewhere between point a and b, and we’re hoping it shows up again”.

Its been done forever when Ibuprofen went OTC Boots made a pro-drug Profen. Instead of 2 4 Iso Butyl Phenol it was 2 8 and when metabolized it became 2 4 on the first pass through the liver.

I don't mind that so much as I do that the carriers apparently can't read as they keep giving my the mail from the person who lives on the street one over from me. The number is the same but the street names aren't even close.
After all these years of doing this route you'd think they'd realize where they are. And we even have street signs.
