That's a whooole lotta content! And I only understand a few basic words of it, but recognize that it took effort to put it all together!
I'm sorry. Hope you're not offended that I comment (gasp!) off-topic here, Pixy. It's the middle of the night for most here anyway. That's how I justify it. But do let me know if OT is an issue! Posted by: JQ, out of that Christmas mood at December 21, 2021 02:19 AM (dB4Iz) 4

Really there's only a few types of stories I post: 1. Trillion-dollar company does something indescribably stupid and/or reprehensible. 2. Ordinary people do something with technology that is indescribably stupid and/or reprehensible. 3. Here's some little bit of tech that doesn't suck. 4. Here's some little bit of tech that doesn't suck and if you're lucky might actually be back in stock sometime in late 2025. 5. Here's some little bit of tech that at first glance didn't appear to suck but on closer inspection turned out to be a swirling vortex of nightmare fuel. 6. Politics ruins everything. 7. Here's something that was already terrible that just got ruined by politics and now we can all laugh. 8. Hololive. Maybe I could label the posts... Oh and Pixy? I know you like Nim. Have you looked into Erlang/Elixir? Well, Elixir, really. Seems like something you'd find fascinating. No Java or Javascript there... in fact, the leading web framework (Phoenix) just ripped Node.js out of the default install and reworked their entire asset pipeline so you don't have to use Node. Well, actually back in July or so.
Nim and Elixir seem aimed at different domains, really. But both fascinating. Posted by: Rafal Gan Ganowicz at December 21, 2021 03:33 AM (DN0pc) 31

Redbean is intended for small websites or web apps - the whole thing including your entire site is a single binary file. Drop it on Windows, MacOS, Linux, or BSD and it just works. Same file across four different operating systems. And the magic part is that it's also a valid Zip archive so you can drag and drop files into it to update the web content. Back before Facebook got their paws on it, WhatsApp was running on six servers that ran Erlang. That's it.
Can't beat Erlang for massively capable scalable server architecture. Of course Elixir compiles to Erlang, but it's not written in Erlang's Prolog syntax... *shudder*. It's not a drag and drop like Redbean sounds like, though. I'll have to look at that. Doesn't Nim kind of sort of promise the same thing? Or do you have to compile for each platform? Oh hey, look at that. After 3 hours, my homebrew update finished. And my poor mac mini's fans are spinning down. Posted by: Rafal Gan Ganowicz at December 21, 2021 04:01 AM (DN0pc) 52

By the way, Miklos: if you put some straw, about 2 feet thick, over your root veggies they should last most of the winter in the ground, unfrozen. If, that is, you have to worry about frost. Oldschool Tucows was a cool company; it's unfortunate that they seem to be in the divest-and-disengage phase because that usually doesn't end well. I've used their wireless MVNO (Ting) for years, though that's apparently been sold to Dish lately. The fact that it was Tucows was a major factor in my going with them, since I much prefer dealing with not-evil tech lords.

The combined IQ of the adults in the story and the reporter and the car is barely into the double digits. As a tech person, ever drive down the road and imagine your car has complete control and then you see a scenario that you just *know* is not built into the code and could get someone or everyone killed? A long tractor trailer going around a narrow curve toward you, a car pulling out of a sidestreet, a young child darting out of a house and making a beeline for the street, the car in front of you driving in an erratic manner, to name a few of hundreds. I'm waiting for software version 5001.b at the earliest. Which should be in about 100 years. Posted by: Traitor Joe's Military Surplus at December 21, 2021 04:26 AM (dQvv7) 67

I'm glad I stayed in my niche of writing accounting software. I didn't kill anyone but probably helped bankrupt a few. Probably got a few into trouble with the IRS when I revealed a 'back door' into the data base where they could hide some money. But no fiery crashes of out of control automobiles. This job is actually a tragic story, condominium was finished and people moved in, couple years later someone was getting work done and city found out it wasn't anywhere near code. Every unit had walls like your house, not multy layers of fire code drywall. So they all had to move out while this work is being done. We are fixing these issues, wasn't any part of the original.

While in Orlando, Her Majesty was working with our handler's team, several of whom tested positive for COVID during the course of the show weekend. At her request, I went to CVS yesterday to ask when and if she should get tested. They said they didn't do the tests but could provide me with a test kit, but don't use it unless HM was displaying symptoms. This seemed pretty sensible. An amusing "best laid plans of mice and men" incident: Google has been working on quantum computers. Turns out they need error correction, and they we were working on that. But they found that about once every ten minutes or so, their error correction process would blow up. Go FUBAR. Turned out it was cosmic rays and another natural radiation. This problem appears to be a show-stopper. So, their very expensive quantum computer may turn out to be nothing more than an extremely expensive radiation detector. "Obscure medical blog" the British Medical Journal is in a fight with a FB fact checker "Lead Stories"
Lead Stories response to BMJ is: Your headline that there were "Data integrity issues with the Pfizer Vaccine testing" was wildly overstated and clickbait. And when combined with the fake news of the time that Pfizer CEO was arrested for fraud, made your story get shared by the rubes. By slapping your story with a "Flaws Reviewed" label, we are not saying your article was flawed. We only said you lacked context. When we say a story lacks context, FB puts warnings and threats on the post, but it has no intention of acting on those threats, so shut up. We asked pfizer, and a guy who is paid to do research for pfizer, and they said pfizer is great, and the study is great, so get the jab. Please. Dumpsters have incredible value in waste management and disease prevention and there's nothing more saddening to me and the members of our team then seeing one on fire.

Six Reasons Why Jesus Still Matters in a Secular Age The old good news/bad news joke is Jesus is coming back. The bad news is he's really pissed off. I think the same thing in relation to Trump. He's coming back and he's gonna be pissed off. I wanna see angry Trump start firing. Posted by: Ace Dumpsters, Inc. at December 21, 2021 07:45 AM (dQvv7) 285

Hallmark movie about a beautiful but unlucky in love DC Dem consultant who goes to WV to yell at Manchin over Christmas and falls in love with a rough-hewn carpenter who drives a Tahoe with a Trump 2024 sticker.

I live in a short walk of a crematorium, haven't noticed any unusual traffic or smoke coming from the place. Looks pretty quiet to me, unlike the Nazi death camps where it rained pieces of humans all day and night.

Posted by: SMH while awaiting His return at December 21, 2021 07:47 AM You don't remember angry JC overturning the money changers tables in the Temple? Angry with the apostles when they couldn't stay awake? I think a lot of his message was passive resistance, but when pressed he could get angry. But scroll over if you disagree. Just had to read the new style guide for work, which includes a guide on how to refer to anyone who is not white.
The differences in the distinct cultures of Native peoples, people from Africa, or Asia must be respected and noted where possible. However, white people, who come from Europe, North Africa or the Middle East, can all just be lumped together, because there's no difference between Italy or Ireland or Germany or Algeria or Iran, right? I am thinking this Omygod scare is to tee up a victory over the virus right before the midterms. Spread fear then claim victory. Or, in the worst case, set up the blame game in the event this or another variant turns out to be something to worry about. Cant lose.
