From last night but you don't want to miss these St. Bernards.

Prairie dog demands more pets.

Penguin is a fan of Tim Pool. How many grains make a heap?, he wants to know.

Cat learns how to pet a baby bird.

A different cat protects chicks. From a predatory bird.

Dog has no problem doing the trick.

Miniature donkey.

Cat pulls a real ninja move.

The puppy's in too.

Inman: Playcalls that beat-'em-up of the purse-snatcher I linked yesterday.

Would you?

Update: I'm such a spazz. It's fake.

I knew it was fake. I mean, look at it. It would literally kill you. It's a death machine.

How would that pass a safety check even at the conceptual phase?

And yet I bought it.

Apparently the video was inspired by this video about fake amusement rides.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I would be pretty fucking excited if I was able to do that without dying. The air pressures between the tunnel and open air have to be significant and MUST screw with the plane quite a bit.

We did that back when online buying was first starting out. Carsdirect IIRC. Bought a 2001 model and they beat all the local dealers by $7000. It was incredible. I even contacted three of the dealers and said "I am buying this and this is the price I'm paying, do you want to match it?" and none did. So I bought it online and it was shipped up from Atlanta to one of those dealers and I signed the paperwork in their office (ha).

Last 4 or 5 new cars I've bought have been from out of state. If you shop around you can save ridiculous money. There is always a dealer somewhere desperate to get rid of a car, often the one you want.

If it's a used car, buying sight unseen can be a little scary for some, although I have done it on occasion. But for a brand new car, you test drive locally then buy where you get the best deal. Then a $200 one way ticket on Southwest and fun road trip home. Or have it delivered for $500-1000 depending how far it is.

13-14 years ago I bought a 2005 Infiniti through Ebay from a guy in West Palm Beach. Flew down to check it out - loved it and drove it back to OH. He just charged me $500 to hold it and I could back out or refuse it after seeing it. It was thousands cheaper there than locally. Still have it and it's been a great vehicle.

203 > I never understand why the default setting for the vast majority is to trade in. You might as well take a briefcase full of money and burn it. It has exactly the same effect.

Same for selling used guns. Never take them to the gun store unless you have some seriously special relationship with them. When I wanted to sell some guns, they followed a simple formula. Unless it was brand spanking new, never been fired except at the factory, they were going to sell it at 80% of new, and would give you 60% of that.

Let's say you take a $1000 gun to the store. It only has 200 rounds in it. It got cleaned carefully after every range trip. It was a safe queen.

80% of 1,000 is $800. 60% of $800 is $480.

$480 for a $1,000 gun in mint condition with 200 rounds through it is ridiculous.

212 Oh, didn't see the Kurt post, did it get nuked?

Anyway, he is displaying basic ignorance about how elections work.

It is a two step process, the canvas and the count. You can't count until the canvas is complete. In the canvas ballots are determined to be legally cast. Doesn't matter how many there are, if they don't match the legal requirements they are tossed out.

This is how the fraud was done in most states, especially Pennsylvania. Signature matching is supposed to throw out the ballots and they don't pass the canvas. Instead the matching software was turned down to such a low level that it might as well be off. Interestingly, they didn't use the same matching standard used to get a candidate on the ballot in the first place, those standards stayed very high.

Once the ballots pass canvas, then they are counted. A recount doesn't address the canvas, only the count of ballots. This is why the AZ recount is pretty close to reported numbers. They never looked into whether the ballots were legal in the first place.

Not even close to allowed these days. There are ASTM standards for everything today, F2291 being the one that applies here.

Back in the day there was a park in New Jersey (park is still there as a matter of fact) that instead of having a real water slide just paved over a hill side, ran water down the slope from hoses, and you just slid down on a mat or whatever you felt like. At the bottom you either managed to stop yourself or ran into a wooden wall. They also tried building (with no engineering) a real 360 degree vertical loop waterslide once, key word being once.

I think the one at the old amusement park was called the Graviton, if I'm not confusing it with another ride. I don't remember any securing bars, just hand-holds. Kids would turn up-side down while it was spinning.

I used to really like it. Then, one day, while spinning, I felt like there was a weight on my heart. That was the last amusement park ride for me forever. Then I was old.

Posted by: Just a side note at December 21, 2021 08:16 PM (H/pb5)

259 I mentioned earlier today I hit a mofo pothole today, got a split in my sidewall and even scuffed the wheel - like hitting a GD curb at 70 (dashcam collision waring went off). That sort of shit will have me thinking hard about hitting serious speed on a CA freeway (I know better). Going down to LA 2 months ago, I hit 127 on an empty 5, and was just getting going. But one second there were no cars in sight, the next I was catching up. A pothole like that at 120+ I'd be toast. Fucking CalTrans.

My 91 year old dad has had a lease vehicle for years but when his lease is up next month he is going to buy it. Apparently it is a thing now where people are buying out their leases because they can turn around and sell the car for a tidy sum. At 91 my dad figures he'll keep it until he can't drive anymore then sell it.

80% of 1,000 is $800. 60% of $800 is $480.
$480 for a $1,000 gun in mint condition with 200 rounds through it is ridiculous.

Unless you live in CA, and you can ask for over street price of a new gun if it only had 4 boxes put through it. That's how cops make bank out here - buy a nice CZ Shadow that's off roster, put a box through it and then sell a $1400 gun for $2200+. Wish I was kidding.

276 Dave I'm a bit confused about all this, though part of the problem is the lack of good info and practically zero fair-minded literate analysis - but the Maricopa audit was a sorta/kinda quality control study, that ID's ballots with problems (main one being no record of a voter to match the ballot).

In Clark County it was alleged by both GOP observers and civil serpents involved that the signature-match tech was (as you say) effectively turned off (something like 40% match level). In addition to the GOP observers being excluded, and the opera bouffe creation/distribution of ballots (they were piled up all over town), I keep saying I don't understand how that county's (decisive, for NV) election process, from start to finish, could pass any muster at all.

I'm fairly sure federal elections are regularly thrown out by courts for far, far, far less dubious election process performances.

You get a home inspected before you buy. Property inspection, pest inspection, roof inspection... Makes sense you'd have your car checked out, and especially like going to a doctor who's done nothing but knee replacements for 25 years, get the guy who knows exactly what the typical problems are with a given brand/model, and when something isn't right.

Much better this crappy state pays for it and I actually get some of my tax dollars back for "road maintenance". The tires are basically new, but I'd still need a front set. If the wheel is damaged, then I'm getting 4 new ones (front and rear are different sizes).

319 I lived aboard the Sloop New Dawn from '99 to '06.

She became the "Sunk" New Dawn, when Hurricane Ike wadded her up like a used kleenex. Good thing I'd swaller'd the anchor, moving ashore two years before that storm. Pity, 'cause the far stronger Hurricane Rita slid by in '05, but veered East a half-day early, trashing Louisiana.. I think it did about $7million of improvments there, actually.

But yeah, I'll fess up to loving the live-aboard life. I'd just need a 50 footer now, and a corresponding barge to float all of my tools n' such.

339 but the Maricopa audit was a sorta/kinda quality control study, that ID's ballots with problems (main one being no record of a voter to match the ballot).
--------
Rhomboid - The flaw with the AZ audit is that it looked at a lot of things, but didn't look at the signature matching issue that allowed ballots in Maricopa into the count in the first place.

So they ended up saying "yes, the count in Maricopa matched the ballots we looked at". But they didn't examine if those ballots were legal.

They hinted in their report that this was a flaw in their effort and it should be looked at as well. Hopefully the legislature will address the issue anyway when new voting laws are passed.

Last year I was looking for a 2004 Grand Cherokee (second generation, which is when they hit their peak). We have a '99 with 236K miles, but I wanted the same vehicle a little newer with less odometer wear and tear. Found a few that, according to the dealer listings, were perfect. However, I had them all inspected by local garages (average cost, $125), and it turns out they all had major problems that the dealers just "forgot" to list, or mention when initially queried. So I gave up and just put some money into restoring ours instead.

So, word to the wise. Before buying remote, have it inspected. It's easy to find a qualified garage local to the selling location, they generally have a lot of experience with inspecting pre-purchase, and are happy to oblige.

P.S. Good luck with finding your car. Sounds like it would be a comfy ride.

I am also nervous about the Ariane ride. Riskiest part of the mission in my opinion. Falcon Heavy is not an option because ESA is providing a free ride in return for NASA putting some ESA experiments on Webb. Webb is too way too over budget to ask Congress for the money to pay Musk for a ride.
The deployment operations of Webb are very complex. I have faith that JPL is going to make it all work, with maybe a few glitches that can be fixed by commands from Earth. JPL has an excellent track-record with complex mechanisms and deployment ops. I will keep my fingers crossed for every step, though! Good luck with the bowl party. Merry Christmas!

447 It's the difference between a $3M launch and a $45M launch. You can typically build 2 or 3 300 kg payloads for the difference in launch costs.

The Virgin's of the world are still new and don't have the reliability yet. But their price guarantees they will have enough launches to become reliable enough to be viable in the next 3 to 4 years.

Mission life issues are 90% on orbit failures anyway, launch risk is a low contributor to the equation.
