Gun Thread: Pre-Christmas Edition!

santa pic 2021 scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Christmas, the holiday best loved for receiving gifts, is nearly here! Have you dropped lots of hints for what you want under the tree? A new range bag perhaps? That nice brass cleaning rod with ball bearings you've had your eye on? A Nightforce Competition scope? 10,000 rounds of 175gr Federal Gold Medal Match ammo? A fully automatic H&K MP5? Whatever is on your wish list, I hope you have been a good boy or girl and find Santa has left it for you on Christmas morning!

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!

With that, let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

Welcome!
Last week, at the suggestion of our pal Oddbob we invited lurkers to creep out of the shadows and say hello, and what a great job they did! We saw a lot of new nics in the comments and I want to welcome and thank all of the new contributors! Hope you find the time to visit again this week and tell us about your shooting, or even your lack thereof if you didn't manage to get to the range. Let us know what is on your mind, and if there is a particular topic you would like to see covered in a future thread just speak up and we'll do our best to address it.

Math? I Was Told There Would Be No Math!!

121921 sliderule scaled.jpg

You were lied to. There will be math.

So this week I have an assignment for you. A homework problem to study over Christmas break, if you will. I have always said shooting is mostly a big math problem, and this will give you an idea what I am talking about.

The assignment is to watch the video and come prepared next week to discuss how you would apply the covered concepts to shooting. Important: If you already have an idea of the answer, please do not mention it in the comments this week! The video is 48 minutes long and it's only fair to give everyone who would like to think about it a chance to come up with an answer for themselves. This might be a tough one because you have to think a little beyond the material as presented and apply the concepts to certain shooting situations. The nugget you're looking for is discussed throughout the video so you may not have to watch the whole thing, but its certainly not a waste of time if you do.

Here are the questions I'd like you to answer:
- Which of the concepts presented are relevant to shooting?
- What particular shooting problem can you solve using the concept?
- How would you apply the concept to solve the problem?

Good luck!

I couldn't resist including this pic - Weasel

First up we have a really great idea from or pal Bonecrusher.

It may interest you to look at the low powered end of the spectrum of rifles; in this case - air rifles.
The pre-charged pneumatics have improved dramatically over the last decade or so, giving air rifle shooters choices of .177, .22, .25, .30 and up to .50 cal projectiles. Energy levels in .25 of 90FPE and above using pellets or slugs. Probably the best overall in terms of power, shots per fill, flexibility, and most importantly - accuracy, is the FX series. Expect to pay $2000 or more for a fully dressed item from this maker. On the other end of the price scale is the Air Venturi Avenger at about $350 for the nekkid gun. This one also features both an externally adjustable regulator and hammer spring. According to the Tube vids, pellets work best at around 850-920 FPS, slugs can handle greater velocities. The beauty of these two is that they can be fine-tuned in pressure and volume to achieve the desired velocity while using the minimum of air charge.

What intrigues me so much about the air rifles is how quiet they can be, sound moderators are legal and outside the purview of the ATFE as they are not firearms. Being able to dial in the pressure and volume equation with a screwdriver at the shooting bench makes life real nice. Much simpler than handloading gunpowder cartridges, which, after all is said and done is achieving the correct pressure and volume for the given rifle twist, barrel length, projectile specifics and desired muzzle velocity. Air rifles are not for picking off big game at 500 yards; they can, however take feral hogs at 50 yards with head shots, without a whole lot of noise.

The big benefit to air rifles is the ability to shoot in the back yard or inside the house without bothering the neighbors. Of course this requires a proper projectile trap and I have found that a stack of magazines taped together about 3-4" thick will do the job nicely.

Perhaps more people could be brought into the shooting discipline by starting at the low power end.

Wow! Things have really changed since 1970 and my Red Ryder days! How about the rest of you? Anyone else shooting air rifles? Seems to me like not a bad idea to have one around for these uncertain times we're living in together.

Next up, our pal Ed L sends in another excellent review!

ed L 1 121921 scaled.JPG

I picked up this Benelli M4 right before COVID hit, adding the Aimpoint Comp M5 later. This is one of the military/law enforcement models, with a full 7 shot magazine tube and three position collapsible stock. Arguably the creme de la creme of tactical shotguns, it still has all the drawbacks of shotguns. There are a lot of pluses to this, not the least of which is the relatively mild recoil when firing full power defense loads of buckshot or slugs. But this shotgun still has significant drawbacks, which include:

Length of pull: Most Benelli M4s have fixed, full length stocks. If you have short arms, this can be a potential dealbreaker because the ergonomics just don't work. SRA Blaster and Iris found that the middle position of the stock suited them much better than the fully extended position.

Complexity: This shotgun's manual of arms is more complicated than most pump action shotguns. It includes a bolt hold open feature that allows the shooter to swap the round in the chamber without feeding another from the magazine tube (useful for swapping buckshot for slugs or vice versa). You can also "ghost load" the weapon by placing the shell on the lifter before loading a shell in the chamber to raise the maximum ammo capacity to nine rounds. But this isn't instinctive for new users. It takes a lot of practice to learn.

Benelli M4's are hard to find and cost a lot ($1,800 - $2,000 for starters). The military/law enforcement models are even harder to find and run right now around $4,000. That said, if you have the $$, want the very best shotgun money can buy, and can live with the downsides, grab one of the military/law enforcement models if you see it. Converting one of "neutered" versions from five shots to seven and adding the collapsible stock is doable but is problematic right now due to parts shortages.

Then Ed L decided to do a patterning comparison.

ED l 2 121921 NOBEL SPORT scaled.JPG

ED l 3 121921 fiocchi scaled.JPG

I also looked at the differences in pattern spread for a couple of buckshot loads. First picture is a nine pellet load of Nobel Sport 2.75" 00 buckshot at ten yards. Second picture is a nine pellet load of Fiocchi Home Defense 2.75" 00 buckshot at ten yards. The Nobel Sport load appears to have a wider spread than the Fiocchi load. That said, it may not matter at typical home defense range. Ten yards is pretty close to max range for a typical home defense scenario. But these pictures should debunk Hollywood's depiction of a close-range shotgun blast taking out most of a room like a grenade explosion.

Great work, Ed L! Thanks so much for sending this in!

Next up, our pal JTB shares a great YouTube channel he has found, and this particular video has an important message.

By chance I came across this YouTube channel this morning. It is 'Target Suite'. This latest video is called 'Don't Lose the Magic' about taking time to just enjoy some casual shooting now and then. George is sitting in a comfortable lawn chair with an old Remington bolt action 22 plinking at some steel targets.

Most of his videos are about lever action rifles and single action revolvers so they are near and dear to my heart. The ones I've watched have been both pleasant and informative.

We spend a lot of time here on the Ol' Gun Thread talking about shooting accuracy and, sometimes at the expense of just having fun. It can be easy to get so wrapped up in training and related objectives that we lose sight of the fact that the sport is supposed to be fun. However, there is a time for training and a time for purely recreational shooting, and if you are just a little creative, you can even get some practice on fundamentals at the same time. As I have mentioned before that oftentimes I do exactly what the guy in the video is doing, plinking with a .22, just for the fun of it. Although precision is important, so is remembering the reasons you became a shooter in the first place.

Excellent find, and great lesson JTB. Thank you!

121921 deep creep scaled.jpg

A couple of weeks ago I recommended a new product, Sea Foam Deep Creep and a few people have mentioned ordering it. Have you used it yet and if so, what are your thoughts? Good? Bad? Indifferent? As I mentioned, I am also a big fan of a similar product, Aerokroil, but Deep Creep is about half the price and makes a lot of sense as an alternative especially when being used purely as a surface protectant.

Let us know in the comments if you have an opinion!

22 Nice thread.

The M4 is a great shotgun, but I picked up a Benelli M1 Super 90 with a 7 shot tube for $800 about 10 years back.

I patterned about 8 different loads, and found the Federal #1 buckshot (15 pellet) with Flight Control wads patterned the best. Pancake size spread at 10 yards. Absolutely perfect.

Oh, and for Christmas this year, I want a Colt SAA in .45 Colt.

54 It was a good ammo week at Chez JTB. First, I found a small ammo box buried under some other gear. It was pretty heavy. Turns out it held 200 rounds of Greek HXP 30-06 ammo. This is the stuff the CMP sells (when in stock) for their Garands. Then I remembered the story. The owner sold his Garand when he had trouble with the recoil of his rifle. Years later he discovered this store of ammo but didn't have a 30-06 rifle anymore. I got the rounds for a real bargain price. Yay, me!

A friend of mine brought his SP1 made in 1970? out for a bit of shooting and I got him zeroed and we put her thru her paces out to 600 yards and she did not disappoint. Excellent rifle and it is so sad Colt went down the shitter like they did.

Very nice shotgun Ed L....top of the line!

67 Well, friends, Illinois is fixing to screw gun owners again. Reported by Molly B. at Illinois Carry, FOID cards issued after Jan 1st will not feature an expiration date. It will still have one, but dealers will have to log into a registry to see if your card is expired. So every time you go to Rural King or Bob's Discount Guns n Gear to buy ammo, the counter clerk will have to check with ISP to see if your card is expired.

How well is that going to work for on line ammo sales? I have an idea.

I hate this place. I sure hope the court throws out the FOID altogether.

71 Been taking the Glock 43X to the range lately. 200+ rounds this week with the shield arms 15 round magazines and metal magazine release button. I shoot that pistol better than any other pistol I have ever shot or owned. With that gun I have quit pulling low left at 7 yards and put almost all of my rounds on an 8 inch shoot and c target. Impressive with my 29+ year old eyes and arthritic arms.

I may start carrying it as my EDC. It fits all of my Glock 43 holsters so that is a plus.

First question: What will it eat? 5.56 is easier to find and cheaper than .300 Blackout.

Second question: What's your budget? Good quality glass or suppressors can easily exceed the cost of the rifle.

Third question: What do you want to do with it? Given the ammo situation right now, I think a 20" designated marksman rifle might be the way to go. If you go w/ .300 Blackout, I think you should set up to go suppressed, since that's .300 Blackout's claim to fame.

83 To continue the good ammo week saga. Natchez Shooters Supply has CCI Maxi-Mag 22 mag ammo in stock. This is the 40 grain jacketed stuff which my 22 mag funs prefer. And it was the best price on 22 magnum ammo I've seen in over 2 years. Wow! In stock and at a good price. I ordered 1,000 rounds which might arrive by Christmas or at least before New Years.

I've become a fan of the 22 mag for plinking and more careful target shooting. Although it is more expensive than 22lr it is less so than most centerfire ammo and reaches out another hundred yards. Heck, it can even stand-in as a halfway decent self defense round. Thirteen 22 caliber rounds moving at over 1,800 FPS from a Henry lever action can be discouraging.

101 The indoor range we belong to hosts 4H air gun shooting, so I have been taking some air guns in there to shoot.
I still have 3 air rifles, a Webley, a Sheridan "blue streak , and a chinese made Beeman. I had the Webley on the range there a couple weeks ago. It shoots well enough, but my eyesight is not happy with certain targets... Still working on that.
I brought a couple air pistols last time. Daisy 777 which is accurate as all get out, but so low powered it will not pierce a Shoot and See target. I will bring NRA air gun match targets next time.
I also brought a Czech Tau7 match pistol. Turned out ( I think anyway) it had a missing O ring, and dumped the CO2 cartridge instantly. I think I have that sorted, and will try it the next time I hit the range.
Finally, I have an S&W 79g air pistol, and a Crosman MK1 which is kinda like a Ruger Mk1. I rebuilt them both last winter, so should be good to go... '

It has a sturdy brass rod set into a heavy aluminum handle. The rod is tapped to accept 10/32 jags and such. The kit also includes jags, swabs, cleaning and shooting patches, and a muzzle guard. It is sturdy enough to use as a ramrod on my single shot BP pistols. With the proper sized attachments the kit will handle any cleaning or loading needs. 137 She Equips Herself is great. I have the belly band from CanCan, and it's a good belly band with only one problem _for me_: if I put it on and move around some, then take the firearm out, the belly band loosens and gradually slides down inside my pants until the legs stop it. That is *really* uncomfortable.

Been looking for a shooting cap for my wife. I think I'll buy one of those SEH hats.

I think of it as more the Final Word.

You plink away with everything else, seeing what kind of group you can hold, and then you bring out the P226.

And there it is. That's the group.

The Gen 5 G19 will be closest to the G44, baring weight/caliber of course.

The MOS will have the red dot of course, other wise same size as other G19's.

The 19x has the grip length of a Glock 17, so longer grip and more rounds, but the slide length of a G19. Sorta a Frankengun, I haven't heard a lot of love for it....nor a lot of hate.

What I hear from the youtubers is that ammo mfgs are mostly focused on the main ammo calibers: 9mm, 5.56, 45 ACP and a few others.

.380 and .38 special are more niche, they make less of it, so cost is higher.

263 The fascinating thing about sin/cosine is that derivatives are necessarily derived from the summation of these angle measurements - ie if you have a stock price that ranges from x to y over a certain period (the summation) - you can "derive" the arc of stock prices (if given history of the sticks price variances) and therefore know what the risk is for the suggested purchase price - it's just a Black and Sholes model it - if anyone wants a formulation of it, I have it.

Too much math for most Horde folks, I get it, but most blue-collar folks do this in their heads without knowing it - ie. the price of eggs each year is done by calculating the elasticity of demand - which is a derivative of time and price thru 1-N, with a price being set as an equation - egg farmers do this in their heads - people outside the egg industry have to do it using these formulas.

Profit.

Not long ago, 9mm was going for what, 20 cents a round? Then COVID and crap and you saw 9mm going for 80 cents a round or more.

So every ammo manufacturer thought: "Wow, that's like 400 percent profit. I think I'm going to shift production that that rich vein of pure gold."

As 9mm production catches up with demand, they will shift to other calibers. At least that's what I hope.

279 One of the things that helps to apply sines and cosines to shooting is that, for small angles, the sine of an angle is very nearly equal to the angle itself expressed in radians. So if you're talking about a few thousandths of a radian (or a few milliradians if you prefer) you don't need to know the sine if you're using radians.

If a Colt AR-15 is fun, you've got to get an M203 grenade launcher from LMT. Most Colt AR-15s come w/ the "government cut" on the barrel in front of the front sights to accommodate mounting the M203. Lewis Machine Tool has them for sale. Prices are steep, but in reach. Of course, there's that ATF paperwork for a "Destructive Device," but wouldn't it be cool to say "Say hello to my little friend" before squeezing off a shot?

Posted by: Ed L at December 19, 2021 08:32 PM (NacE+)

293 Sharon, to generalize (subject to the abusive, harsh correction of the commentariat and host here), long guns are naturally easier to shoot than handguns.

Something I'm trying to beat into the heads of some friends who want my help gunning up before they head off to their multi-year (I doubt it will go that long) journey around North America with a fancy new trailer.

They're not "shooters", in the sense of the hobbyists and serious geeks here. They just want something for, you know. I'm still convinced best option is a 12-ga pump (or 20 ga if she isn't comfortable with the 12). Also, gun laws and b.s. as you travel around the US.

15 plus one in the chamber if you wish. You will want a speed loader as the last 5 rounds are hard on the hands. And that's with both the Glock and the PPQ.

If you have the Glock 44 it makes more sense to stick with Glock as you can train with the cheaper .22 ammo on the same frame and trigger as the 9mm.

The Glock 48 may be a better choice for you . Only disadvantage for me personally is it's a single stack and not compatible with my Glock mag carbines.

It has a slimmer handle but it's lighter than the G19. It's even smaller than the G19 though the barrel is longer. It's getting rave reviews.

301 Range report: Another fine morning at ESS today where I learned the valuable lesson of ensuring scope rings are nice and tight, especially on a red dot in a circular tube (in this case, an Aimpoint Comp M3). It explains why my accuracy shifted last weekend after I finished zeroing. When I put the turret caps back on, the sight shifted every so slightly. Fortunately, the ring had worked loose enough this morning for me to actually notice it before wasting (more) ammo.

On the pistola side of things, I've been sticking with the 92FS and I think I actually have the recoil mitigation issue sorted out. At the very least, the sight picture is back before I'm ready to pull the trigger again so next up is working on faster controlled trigger manipulation.

The acting is quite good, everyone gave 100%. I'm not sure this type of film demands a theater experience. More of a drama than the other films.

I wrote to Beretta. They wrote back that they would be in touch. But they have not been in touch. Patience.

Yet we cannot deny that weight has some advantages in terms of accuracy. There's a reason Walther started making all-steel PPQs.

It's a tradeoff, and depending on your rig and circumstances, it can make sense.

Please give every Horde Member 10,000 rounds of their favorite ammunition.. Every single on has been gooder than good this past year.

As for bad old me, I won't ask for much this year. Just a mint Johnson 1941 rifle, a mint Mauser C96 Broomhandle chambered in 7.65 x 21 Parabellum, a mint Luger P08 chambered in 9 x 19 Parabellum, and a 75 mm pack howitzer with 5,000 rounds HE.

Merry Christmas to you, Mrs Claus, the Elves, and the Reindeer!

+1, particularly the X version.

And the cool thing w/P320s (& P365s) is the trigger mechanism is the registered part. You can buy grip modules, slides, etc. relatively cheaply, so you can have a compact, full-size, and some variations in between, and swap the FCM between them as needed/desired. Many parts, one gun.

411 It's still another week until flintlock deer season here in PA, but I want to get some smoke in the air now. Luckily, it's small game season, so this week I'll be spending some time in the woods with my muzzleloading 12 gauge. It's a CVA SxS kit that I built way back in high school, and it's tons of fun (and tons of work) to shoot. Hopefully I can have enough success to make a nice squirrel pot pie for the holiday weekend!

That said, lead shot is getting harder and harder to find. I have a decent supply of #6, which is what I use for squirrels, and a bit of #7.5 from when I still bothered handloading for trap, but none of the shops around here ever have much shot in stock. I do, however, have plenty of lead. Anybody here ever try dripping your own shot? I've been watching some vids on the Tube and I think it might be doable.

I carry it in a generic one-size-fits-all shoulder-rig from an army-surplus store which will fit just about anything except the 629 .44 snubbie. the spare mag pouches on the other side hold 2 quick0strips each.
I know that it's not quite the fashionable carry piece in These Troubled Times, but we have worked together so long that I know that I can put all 5 where they need to be within Tueller drill range and under most any condition, and really, out here in the cows&corn whatthehell do I need with a lot more ? when I go to madison or milwaukee I stagger under the weight of large caliber armament.

Pennsytucky,
I haven't hunted in decades but my last time was with the 12 gauge CVA SxS, open choke. That thing did the job. I found number 6 shot worked fine for squirrels and upland game birds. And yeah, it takes an eternity to reload both barrels. At least it seemed that way in the field.

Good luck in the woods.

418 67 Well, friends, Illinois is fixing to screw gun owners again.

429 "That said, lead shot is getting harder and harder to find.

I poured for West Coast Shot for a couple of years. It's an art form. The key is the tower and good pans. I used to do 40,000#s a day 4 days a week in the 90's, in early 2004 when I went back again we were doing 20,000 3 days a week. Place closed soon after that. I often pondered trying it myself but I would think without the ability to do a large run and get thing good and hot you probably would only make a few decent pieces and a mess.

Blow darts are a hoot to shoot! Go to www.coldsteel.com and look for the big bore kit, or go to slockmaster.com and look there. They are great fun to shoot in the house and you can aim them like a pool cue, then just adjust for the drop. A stack of magazines taped or pegged to a square of plywood makes for a great target - inside or out.

Take a look at the Colt Python's MSRP:
1955 (introduced): $125 (Royal Blue)
1970: $190 (Royal Blue), $210 (nickel)
1985: $688 (Royal Blue), $787 (bright stainless)
2002 (final year in Colt catalog): $1150 (all finishes)

Now check what prices are on-line from any seller. That rate of appreciation is a darn sight better than a bunch of alternatives.

Ours is/was 184 feet from the bottom of the pans to the top of the water. 8 shot is cool about 10 feet out at any temp but 4 shot will "dust" unless it's about 20 degrees out. We managed 2 shot for about an hour once at -6.

497 418 67 Well, friends, Illinois is fixing to screw gun owners again.

How does that affect visiting a neighboring State and buying there?

Don't know what the Illinois Nazis think about it, but in Iowa, in person, you buy whatever ammo you want, no ID, unless you look underage.

Cable/rail system and cast iron carbon sealed pumps. We moved it like water. Whole system for pouring is like a kitchen faucet. Faster fill makes smaller shot. It was pretty hairball. Fun as hell.

Me too, where I am. No idea how fast they are running the production lines. Was the cover gun on the latest NRA mag I just got. Yet another great review.

505 478 Oh I actually got on here to brag about my latest Air Rifle purchase. The Umarex Air Javalin. 300 fps 180 grain CO2 powered crossbow. Just bought it today and haven't fired it yet. Too cold right now. Don't want to go wheeling as I have no idea how loud it is and don't want to freak out the neighbors on the ingarage air rifle range.

Tomorrow after work I'll give it a go.

506 Greetings:

Corks guns were fun too. When the corks ran out cylinders of lawn dirt worked pretty well.

Remington's 550 though was my favorite.

510 My Burris Eliminator III does my math for me. I think. Haven't actually been to a long distance range with it yet. I've mounted it to a DD5V4 6.5CM.
