I gave away my hundredth rosary today. Within ten minutes, the keyboard tray fell off my desk with 3 of the 4 right-side holding screws pulled out. Interesting coincidence, or hostile action, who knows?
But if the latter, not going to work. I am going to keep making and distributing free rosaries, even though my typing is suffering. I may be too old and frail to fight physically any more, but I'll keep doing what I can in other ways. Not bragging, just hoping to encourage others. Brother-in-law took the keyboard tray home to see if he could fix it. If so, great; if not, no major problem. I've used the desktop or my lap before. My husband and I did a wild lion walk in Zimbabwe. You are armed with a stick to put in the lion's mouth if they try to bite you. LOL. Anyhow, the male and female teenaged lions are loose and you walk through the bush with them (and their unarmed handlers) and are encouraged to pet them when they lie down. We did, and it was something I'll never forget, because I lived to tell about it.

That bullet spinning on ice video is from 2005. More on Mythbusters. They tried to recreate that "in the lab" with test ice blocks and all that. They could not replicate, but they did recover a pristine bullet, which was cause for optimism. They went out to a real frozen lake and were able to replicate that spinning on the ice effect. The angle had to be just right, and cause the bullet to bounce backwards from my quick reading over of a description. That ice/bullet thing is amazing. ace, like you my first "huh?" was the angle, and why didn't the bullet bounce off at a similar angle.
Still don't understand it. Was shooting some steel at the end of the day yesterday and while I've never had any issues with own set-up, I have been hit by jacket fragments bouncing straight back in matches (no big deal as long as eye protection in place), so I was standing off a bit further than usual. In this case the bullet hits a loosely hanging steel plate, pushes the plate back a bit, and angles down into the soft earth. Posted by: rhomboid at December 17, 2021 07:54 PM (OTzUX) 83

The dam is unusual, but makes sense ... a long stretch for the spillway, distributes the flow.
"built between 1837 and 1842 to improve New York City's water supply. By 1881, after extensive repairs to the dam, which was 50 feet (15 m) high, Old Croton Reservoir was able to supply about 90 million US gallons (340,000 m3) a day to the city via the Old Croton Aqueduct." From reading that Mythbuster's description. If the angle of the bullet is too steep, it just deforms in the ice. Too shallow, and it just skips off. But there is a narrow window were some interesting shit can happen. It's some complexity of the interaction between that bullet and the ice. What apparently has to happen is the ice absorbs enough to the forward momentum/energy of the bullet, but still gives a tiny little backward kick. The spin rate is not slowed materially. But the ice does kill most of the translational momentum. They could not get that with blocks of ice. It had to be on a YUGE frozen lake. That is, a big mass of ice. It would be interesting to do high speed camera footage of that. They should have done that. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at December 17, 2021 08:05 PM (Mzdiz) 122

A robust "Don't Try This at Home" caveat really should accompany all those videos of shooting into ..... ice. Shooting into water, in any state, is a big no-no, for all the usual reasons. Into ice? I suppose in a remote location, at least one big reason not to do so is removed, but, still.

I'm remembering, you had to get the angle just right. Using a little .22 rifle, iron sights. Too steep, and it would just plop in with a splash and hit the dirt. To little and no cool sound effect. When just right, you'd get the cool buzzing sound, and you'd see a bigger little plop and ripple in the surface of the water. Again, high speed cameras would be nice to see just what was going on. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at December 17, 2021 08:18 PM (Mzdiz) Yes. Not so much deformed. Bullet impacts something, ricochets, and the tumbling (ass over tea kettle) makes the whir/whine. Diff rounds make diff sounds (mass affecting tumble rate) and velocity upon ricochet changes the tone, too. 5.56 vs 7.62 vs .50 vs 25mm. Never been close enough to a tumbling 120mm to hear that. I remember waaaay back just about the time the Macintosh became a thing that everybody was predicting we'd be changing to DVORAK. Never happened. And it's going to take people adopting it to take off. Of course a good typist is going to be fighting muscle memory, that's a lot of deprogramming. In my case, my first typing class was in 1973. I don't think I could ever change. 4 hours though is a joke. Maybe 4 weeks. I wonder if any studies have been done to figure out just how great the gains would be? I suppose of course it depends on the type of business, but with the gains in OCR et al, I'd think that sort of data input is no longer a thing - when there used to be companies dedicated to that stuff. They could not get that with blocks of ice. It had to be on a YUGE frozen lake. That is, a big mass of ice. It would be interesting to do high speed camera footage of that. They should have done that. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at December 17, 2021 08:05 PM (Mzdiz) The Imperial Japanese Navy discovered during test firings at target hulks in the 1930s that shells entering the water a bit short of the target, at the right entry angle, would follow a trajectory hitting the side of a target hulk below the typical location of the side armor belt. The IJN did a lot of research on this phenomenon, and designed special nose shapes for their big gun shells, to optimize underwater trajectory. The problem with this is that the Japanese intentionally aimed a tiny distance short of the sides of US ships, trying to get the marvelous underwater/below armor belt hits. Yet there are so many variables that getting those marvelous hits in combat was highly unlikely. I believe the US Navy determined that only a handful of hits on our ships may have been from the special shells. Posted by: Gref at December 17, 2021 08:39 PM (AMIL/) 189

[i=At one of my jobs we supplied reservation terminals for American Airlines (long ago).
The managers at AA had herd that Dvorak keyboards were much more efficient so we coded up the embedded software and supplied the systems to AA. They took their best typists and gave them 4 hours on the Dvorak keyboard layout and declared the experiment a failure. Managers... Um, well, Dvorak IS a lot more efficient, once you're used to it ... but it takes a lot more than 4 hours to make the transition! On the alphabetic keyboard, only two letters are in the same places (A and M), and it takes a while to get used to the differences. I'd say a week minimum? They used to run through the place we were buying, but stopped when we moved in. There was enough snow to push them down to a clear cut area. There were a few people that stopped to watch them. I did manage to get a picture that enlarges enough I can see them.

The difference comes from it happens to shear but in inverse proportion to the square of relative velocity. EXPODENTIAL! So you take a mass and send it at a high speed at water then it behaves about the same as a solid. So water isn't actually important in rock skipping. Yeah, a lot of times what happens is people start with a project they don t know anything about. It runs and drives - and they have all this enthusiasm - but maybe not a realistic idea of the costs. They tear it completely apart and only then begin to realize what is involved. And how much money is involved. So it sits for years, major parts get lost or misplaced, nobody will pay anything for a basket case, etc.

I got a Christmas card from my TLM parish. On the back was a little review of the year, mentioning the dedication of the new gatehouse, the uncertainty over Traditionis custodes and visits by the various vicars of the FSSP. What was surprising was that the parish increased from 480 to 620 families in the last year; it was about 200 when I joined. We have five Sunday Masses and people are still falling out the doors. The sanctuary is becoming too small for the numbers attending. Good news, right? Naaah, we're a divisive force of reactionary nostalgics who are a threat to unity, according to the Vatican. 256 En banc review by the 6th Circuit may be the first step. Given the relative importance of it. Dunno what the side opposing the mandates will do yet.
Arguably, Scotus was not granting cert in other mandate cases because of expecting this to come down. Ironically, the lottery system actually makes deference to the 6th Circuit's decision de novo meaningless to Scotus. Posted by: whig at December 17, 2021 09:13 PM (9hXN1) 266

Post from a friend of mine....
"If you want an idea on where staffing is going within the healthcare field, think about this. Before Covid if there was an occasional critically staffed shift you'd get $20/hr shift bonus. Post Covid they've had to implement the scheme I've told you about with $30/hr bonus for the first 8hrs worked over your assigned shifts and increasing to $60/hr after that per pay period. Well now, for the Holiday, they're increasing it to a flat $72.50/hr right out the gate with an added $75/135/200 shift bonus depending on a 4/8/12hr shift. Then, after the holiday, it goes back to what we're at now with the $30/60 scheme, except they're adding an alternative to still earn the $72.50/hr without the bonus if you agree to a 12 week contract picking up assigned overtime. "Both of the judges involved in that decision should be ashamed of their work and violation of oath of office." - whig
Doubtlessly true, whig. But even without working or thinking too hard about it, how many other rulings just in recent years could be described the same way? Think the problem with the judiciary is two-fold (at least). There's the enormous institutional collapse, constitutionally, where the judiciary simply has far too much say over far too many things (mostly a result of congressional abdication of its responsibilities). But there's also the human problem. Simply not capable or suitable people for the jobs. If what are essentially super-clerks are going to become gauleiters and CPSU republic central committees, they at least should be staffed with capable people. The ignorance, unworldliness, even leaving aside the alien mentalities, so evident in the courts are stunning, and disastrous for the country. Dec 17 (Reuters) -- The risk of reinfection with the Omicron coronavirus variant is more than five times higher and it has shown no sign of being milder than Delta, a study showed, as cases soar across Europe and threaten year-end festivities. December/January are NORMAL peak times for ICUs, specifically dealing with seasonal issues, primarily influenza.
As recently as 2018, in "news" not 1 in 200,000 Americans was even vaguely aware of, a comparatively bad influenza season had US hospitals in several regions 1) deferring elective procedures 2) setting up tents in parking lots for overflow business 3) other capacity-boosting short-term measures that are 4) familiar, routine, and often lavishly subsidized by the federal govt. under schemes to ensure surge/crisis capacity. Normal. It happens. ICUs with below 90% occupancy typically are cash-bleeds of large proportions. They're sized to me mostly full, most of the time. Is there anybody here in the insurance business? If so, do media companies carry insurance to assume the risk of deliberately false statements leading to liability for libel/slander?
I'm just saying that seems like a crazy risk for an insurance carrier to assume. To even have such a policy in place is to admit to being a lying organization. The reason I ask this is the usual dolts on Twitter are spinning Sandmann's recent settlement with NBC as being nuisance value only, and that the confidentiality agreement is in place at the insistence of NBC's insurance carrier. (NBC would LOVE to tell everyone their insurance paid Sandmann only pennies, but gosh-darnit that mean old insurance policy insisted on a confidentiality agreement, so I guess we'll never know). For my money, to even have such a policy in place is to admit to being a lying bastard. It's so easy for a media company to not get sued for libel/slander. If they were the least bit honest they could assume the risk themselves. Posted by: Jack Squat Bupkis at December 17, 2021 09:58 PM (0V/8D) 413

I'm surprised they released the name of the 17-year old who attacked the opposing player...

Skipping bullets: we used to go "hunt" snakes and gators near Dewalt Texas, out in the stix off hwy 6, on the banks of the Brazos. There was an old washing machine someone dumped on the far bank and I threw a shot at it with my Gramps old issue .45 it skipped three times with a slight curve matching the currents direction. A couple of shots later I was able to mentalfloss the calcs and get 4 skips and a WANG! as the round hit the Machine.
.22's, .25's,.32's didn't skip as well, went sailing of to who knows where most of the time. The .45ball shit had enough mass to stay in play, in fact after the second skip was "Visible" in the air. Later we tried it under the Hwy 59 bridge and the acoustics were "Unique" to say the least.echo, ping, and a different Rick O'Shay note after every skip. (PS: contrary to lefty expectation, the "minority" folks occasionally down there fishing were not afeared of our horseplay with pistols, but laughed along with us, and even traded a couple of beers for a chance to shoot a couple times as well) Posted by: birdog at December 18, 2021 01:14 PM (uAI4S) Processing 0.08, elapsed 0.0837 seconds. |
