Woke Marvel Comics Uses White Woman to Lecture Hispanic Woman About Why She Should Call Herself "LatinX" Instead of "Latino" or "Latina"

No, this isn't a parody of the woke position.

This is oblivious woke people doing what oblivious woke people do: stupidly lecturing about things they are perfectly ignorant about.

Bounding Into Comics explains how Marvel's attempt to pander to Hispanics turned into Woke White Leftist Women lecturing Hispanics.

As usual.

This is from Marvel's tryhard pandering title, Marvel Voices: Comunidadex Vol. 1: Latinx and Proud. (Why not Marvel Voces: LatinX y orgulloso, you bigots?*)

[T]he aptly titled 'Latinx and Proud' story begins with the Hispanic Spider-heroes Miles and Anya rescuing a woman from a mugger as she was headed down to "an immigrants rights rally at city hall."

Yes there are "Spider-Heroes" now of every race and gender because everyone needs their own Spider-Person. Or Spider-PersonX.

Helping the woman pick up her protest signs, Miles and Anya then agree to attend the rally, swinging off to Miles' Brooklyn home to create their own set of protest materials.

Zam! POW! KERRRANGGG!

Shortly after their arrival, Miles' mom, Rio Morales, returns home from the grocery store, only to find herself puzzled by the use of 'Latinx' on one of their signs.
This leads her to ask Anya, "What does that mean? Latinx. I've heard the term thrown around lately but I've never had the opportunity to really ask about it."

And thus begins the Woke Lecture about LatinX, given by a smug white leftist woman (Anya) to an actual Hispanic woman (Rita Morales).

I guess I should say that Anya's last name is "Corazon" but she's obviously white coded (redhead) so she's Spanish/European. A "White Hispanic," as the New York Times would say.

Rita is confused by this silly nonsense-talk of her deranged and smug white guest, but when Miles points out that the Spanish word "ahorita" can have different meanings depending on context, she realizes that language is messy and we should call people whatever they like -- especially if that language involves "personal identity."

Which is exactly the way that middle aged Hispanic mothers talk, in my limited experience. They talk exactly like 26 year old white leftwing hipster Twitter-Addict Brooklynites.

I mean, this is a convention a lot of people use, but Woke Marvel should do better. If you're going to do a LatinX Pride book, commit to the bit and do the whole thing in Spanish. Don't be COLONIZERS and write it with English with only a few TOKEN Spanish words here and there.

This is really fucking stupid. The word "hero" is gendered. We have "heroine" for the feminine form.
Hero is male. Heroine is female. Hero is also for if the sex of the person is unknown. Exactly, in other words, like "Latino."

Page after page of dreary "slice of life" with terrible writing, with like 1-2 pages of action, in which the heroine yawns as she effortlessly defeats a villain which all the boys have to fight so hard against, and Teaches Him An Important Lesson in the process.

Its tedious as hell, and there's a reason that American comics combined for the entire year sell less than one issue of the most popular Manga.

106 The thing is, most comic book "writers" allowed in the big two these days are either celebrities brought on for sales (or, sort of celebrities), and webcomics chicks brought on for diversity points.

None of them like comic books, superheroes, or the medium and are only doing it so they can hopefully stage into something "better" like movies. There's no passion or even understanding of the work any more.

And honestly, for DC and Marvel it doesn't matter because comics are almost always a net loss. They don't make money on Spider-Man, they make money on Spidey merchandizing. So both aren't about the comics, they are just an idea house to come up with stuff that maybe can be made into a movie or TV show later, and hopefully t-shirts, bed sheets, 'action figures', video games, and so on.

I had written off that movie. (Ugh... another reboot. And the "everyone is Spiderman" marketing that went with it screamed woke-fest. And it came on the heels of Black Panther and Black Lightning releases, so I was blacked out.)

But I was pleasantly surprised. Visually stunning. And the storyline actually lifted up a two-parent family (dad was even a cop!) and villainized a black gangster-type character. Its not terrible, its just really bland and not dynamic. The last panel is a bit more interesting, but the angle is exactly the same "me sitting in the room looking at them", the characters are bland and not expressive, the background is minimal, and there's no actual storytelling.

Its not terrible, its just really bland and not dynamic. The last panel is a bit more interesting, but the angle is exactly the same "me sitting in the room looking at them", the characters are bland and not expressive, the background is minimal, and there's no actual storytelling.

Because traditional comic book artists from concept to inkers to colorists were all concerned with form. Most artists would put a lot of thought into conveying exaggerated motion, inkers would put tons of detail into muscles, colorists making sure the important parts didn't get lost in the backgrounds.

Literally you could put the names of the characters in a hat, scramble them, and the dialog would end up working in almost every scene. Only a few specific exceptions change this up, like if a rank or job is mentioned.

The vast majority of comic book art is created and colored in photoshop.

It may start with a pencil sketch but ultimately it's going to be scanned.

You may get the occasional Alex Ross or Kim Gung Gi cover illustration/painting but that's few and far between.

295 The Bechdel Test isn't so awful in principle: having women be more than The Love Interest or simply interested in men is better writing. It should apply to all sorts of peoples though, men should be deeper than praising the female character and failing all the time, black characters should be more than street hip wisecracks and being the wise character that advises the white hero, etc.

The problem is that the left uses it as some sort of absolute test. If the story is literally a romance and the plot is about the girl finding a man, then having her talk about that is not unreasonable or out of place.

Having a movie with zero women in it is also reasonable based on the story being told. Or zero men.

When it's over, we find that the only effect the RK had is to give him an extra finger on each hand. And when you went back, you saw each panel with his hand showed exactly that. It pointed up how unobservant most people are.

To this day, I have no earthly idea WHAT his use of Micah Synn was supposed to be doing, although that is, in fact, a pretty good arc in Daredevil. (The character was, to be kind, every stereotype of a primitive tribal warlord, only he was a white descendant of King George, which SOUNDS dumber than a box of hair, but worked surprisingly well as a counterpoint to the Kingpin and a commentary on how savagery isn't much of a match for civilization in the long term.)

I always thought that comics were for folks who didn't like to read. (or worse I admit). Now I don't have a view but it sure seems they have a very committed following.

And then along comes this stuff. They are expressing things that previous comic book heros would never have agreed to nor agree with. In fact much of what they're expressing go against the supposed goals and ideals of those previous comic book heroes. And yet here they are. And enough people are accepting the change and so it continues.

I guess if you can make the jump to a different generation you can make changes to a whole lot of stuff no one would've thought possible.

Oh, I loved Superman, Jimmy Olsen and Batman . . . when I was 9-11 years old. I outgrew them. Then years later, a friend showed me the cinematic style that was going into the X-Men comics of the early to mid-'80s under Chris Claremont and John Byrne, the more mature themes and characterization and dialog, and I enjoyed the stuff. (I admit I have a volume on The Phoenix Saga on my bookshelf at home.)

CNN just had a report on their latest survey, which shows Biden with a 49% approval rating (??!!!). They compared the rating of his ability to manage the economy (45%) with Obama's rating, and not Trump's - they skipped over one of Trump's strongest approval points for a comparison.
