Consulted for a nonprofit that provided seedlings sourced from locally collected seed for a number of years. I've planted somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 to 600 seedlings on my acreage over the years. Survivability is a crap shoot. Planted 120 Doug fir and 30 Tamarack this year. We had ten straight days of 100 plus degree days, including records of 112 and 115 in June. Took inventory this fall. Twenty survived. Now they get to see if they can survive their first winter.

45 Mornin', folk,

I too never see the ONT. One week to go before I'm off for Christmas and New Year's, 2 whole weeks, so perhaps I'll stay up later, read and post, and nap in the afternoon. (Oh, who am I kidding? I *know* I'll nap in the afternoon. It's just who I am.)

It's 65 F. here at 3 am. (gahhhh) I'm up to work out before I head off to my office. Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is calling for his breakfast, but I prefer to feed him right after I work out, so he's hungry and will eat his food with the nerve pain pill in it. After his prednisone last night, he seemed to perk up a bit and came out to be petted and brushed in the living room. Maybe he's really improving.

I'm feeling a bit nostalgic today. The 15th of this month was always the day we'd get our Christmas tree when I was a kid as it was dad's pay-day. A bonus of it being my birthday made it extra special. I haven't put up a tree since the year he died. (He was in hospice just before Christmas, and died on Christmas day, 2015.) This is the 1st year since then that I have even felt like 'maybe this year...'

This summer was definitely not a normal one. That stuff happens though. We survived. Had a nasty fire that came close enough to make us pack the car. First winter we lived here we had 158 inches of cumulative snow. Old retired guy down the road measured it every snow fall and sent it in to the local paper. I wondered what we were in for. We've had some some kick butt winters in the 26 years since then but none that compare. Having good neighbors and knowing them helps.

Which is why I've put WI on my list of Possible Places to Retire, ML. Grammie Winger caught my attention in 2019 by saying, "Come to Wisconsin, we're nice," and I was impressed by a lot of what I researched. The Kenosha and Waukesha incidents disturbed me, of course -- but I didn't plan on those places anyway. Appleton looked good.

WV is a front runner for low house prices outside the bigger cities, as is SD, though people are moving there and house prices are going up. But WI is not off the list.

56 I'm considering a tabletop Xmas tree this year because of a practical consideration. Chekov can't climb up to knock it over, and his brother the big black Wolf cat is gone now. This is the first time in many years my table is not a traffic area. And I have a couple of days off before Xmas itself, and a little more disposable income, so maybe.

Eastern Australia is cleaning up from floods just a couple of weeks ago - some areas are still under water. Fortunately it looks like only light rainfall for the next week, so things won't get worse.

Beginning of 2020 everything around here was on fire. Then it started raining sometime in March, and hasn't stopped yet.

But I'll take gray skies over red ones any day.

The tree article is pretty much leftist thought. Plant trees but don't harvest them. So it's sorta like communism but instead of sharing a small reward, there is none. Let the old growth, which provides little in the way of CO2 absorption and oxygen generation take up space in forests, like a boot on the face forever.

My wife has been busily working on Christmas candies and the containers are filled.

99 The tree article is pretty much leftist thought. Plant trees but don't harvest them. So it's sorta like communism but instead of sharing a small reward, there is none. Let the old growth, which provides little in the way of CO2 absorption and oxygen generation take up space in forests, like a boot on the face forever.

100 mornin yall. It's happened again here. A family passing thru and staying at a local hotel had their Uhaul truck carrying all their possessions stolen last night. This happened to another family a few months ago. This family has 3 little girls, all of their stuff is gone including Christmas presents.

People suck and some need a severe beating.if you ever rent a truck to move, don't leave it unattended. Nowadays the criminals are brazen and unafraid of reprisal.

127 Went to see at the cinema last night Macross Plus the Movie for its one night screening.

I must have blinked because the fight scene between Isamu and Guld in which the YF-19 is trashed is missing.

Interesting the YF-21 not only has thought control but the toyed with but never developed Mission Adaptive Wing while the YF-19 borrows from the X-29 and German WWII research in forward swept wings.

Yoko Kanno delivers the soundtrack. But we are treated to Minmay's "My Boyfriend is a Pilot" in the karaoke scene. Myung's song we will see again as the lullaby Ranka Lee knows in Macross Frontier. But what is jarring is one song is really from Ghost in the Shell, the almost atonal chanting this is really like a prayer and we are hear this song as we are treated to a tour of the future that Motoko Kusanagi lives in.

But still being able to see officially any Macross in the US is a win that needs to be supported.

Being a midwest girl, I knew nothing of NASCAR until I met Mr. Black some 30 years ago. He was and is a big fan of the sport. I've been to Daytona and Charlotte speedways and it's fair to say it's quite an experience. I used to be semi-interested in it...with the drivers of an era that has passed. These current crop of drivers bore me to tears. They're namby pambys. Polished dorks who have none of the grit of those who really made the sport.

I've read in the past that the human brain can only process and react at land speeds of right around 200 miles per hour. They always seem to keep speeds at right around that number. Perhaps that's the reason. I suppose fiery crashes would keep fan interest high, but front row attendance low.

That was *really* hard to get used to when I moved. I came from a police state that did enthusiastic traffic enforcement for *everything.* Moving here to the South, I had to relearn how to drive. People just drive 80+ on the highways here. If you go the speed limit, you're a hazard. It works well because everyone follows the same actual rules. In town is pretty tame, but the highways are *fast.*

I am still haunted by my first trip through Nashville toward the end of rush hour. Five lanes of bumper-to-bumper traffic moving at an average speed of about 85. No margin for error.

278 Columbia U:

Comparing our estimate with the CDC-reported VFR (0.002%) suggests VAERS deaths are underreported by a factor of 20, consistent with known VAERS under-ascertainment bias. Comparing our age-stratified VFRs with published age-stratified coronavirus infection fatality rates (IFR) suggests the risks of COVID vaccines and boosters outweigh the benefits in children, young adults and older adults with low occupational risk or previous coronavirus exposure.

There are state safety laws obligating employers to shelter their employees during tornado events and prevent them from leaving the premises. Not clear yet whether this was wrong at all on Amazon's part. Where and how they sheltered within the facility is another matter altogether.

Fistful of Steel: The Rise of Bubba Wallace is an E:60 special airing tonight on @espn to give fans a candid look at NASCAR's lone Black driver beyond the headlines.

Let's take a look at what Wallace has accomplished thus far in his career.

Bubba Wallace: Along the Road - Boardroom
Taking stock of the star NASCAR driver's story so far ahead of the premiere of ESPN's new E:60 special "Fistful of Steel: The Rise of Bubba Wallace."

Going to be a short show, since Wallace has accomplished nothing in his career so far, except to become the Juicy Smollett of NASCAR.

Providing a shelter is one thing. FORCING you to stay on site in an emergency is something completely different.

295 I do feel kinda bad for the Salvation Army bell-ringers, who are usually good people trying to help. I am sure a lot of people are telling them exactly why they aren't put cash into the kettle this year and leaving them dejected and a bit shell-shocked.

It really sucks what their leadership has done to them, and to the organization itself. They took one of the last good charities and then wokified it and likely ruined it.

299 Queensland, Australia, has expanded existing laws to protect workers who are required to turn away unvaccinated patrons, fact-checkers say

New vaccine mandates will be enforced across entertainment venues in the state from Friday, December 17, requiring vaccine certificates to be shown in order to enter establishments such as theatres, cafes, restaurants, pubs, and clubs. Existing laws are being expanded to protect workers who are required to turn away unvaccinated patrons, including possible fines and jail time for anyone who deliberately coughs, spits or sneezes on staff, AP and Reuters report.

To think that my dream vacation was to someday visit both Australia and New Zealand. Post-COVID, so much for that.

308 I would have zero problem with a "face your racism" message if it were universal.... EVERYONE is racist to some degree or another. It's part of being human. Part of a multi- ethnic society is everyone getting over their hang ups, treating people as people and not instances of a class. But fuck you if you think I'm going to bow and scrape while you act like a paragon of unimpeachable virtue.
