On Zir Majesty's Secret Service: Producer of James Bond Franchise Says The Next Bond Might Be "Non-Binary"

James Bond will return... for bottom surgery.

Barbara Broccoli confirmed the next 007 won't be a woman, but the character could identify as non-binary during Friday's episode of the "Girls on Film" podcast. Non-binary is defined as someone who doesn't identify as being male or female, usually choosing to go by "they" or "them" pronouns.
"I do, because I don't think that we should be making films where women are playing men," Broccoli replied.
"I think we should be making more films about women," she further explained. "I think Bond will be a man."
"Non-binary, perhaps, maybe one day?" host Anna Smith asked.
"Who knows?" Broccoli replied. "I mean, I think it's open. We just have to find the right actor."

Honestly, it sounds like she's offering "maybe... possibly... one day..." to an activist "journalist" who won't take "No, Bond is a man" as an answer, but why hedge?

Why not just say "No"?

Barbara Broccoli used to answer this question clearly when she'd be asked "When oh when will James Bond finally be a woman?" As if... as if it's some rule that male characters must be made into women.

She would say "Never, James Bond is a man."

And now... well, maybe he'll be non-binary.

The Bond franchise has been getting more and more woke with every movie. I've been seeing them later and later. The last one I saw in theaters was Skyfall. I paid for Specter on video on demand; I will wait until this last one is included in something I already pay for (like Amazon prime) before seeing it, if at all.

I just don't care. This isn't James Bond.

Is it #Woke? Well... it's so #Woke that Spielberg decided to not use any English subtitles for all the Spanish spoken in the film, because the English subtitles would...

Spielberg's racial patronizing was so pathetic, he decided to punish and exclude anyone who's not bilingual by not including subtitles in scenes where everyone speaks Spanish.

What does that even mean?!?!
I'll tell you what it means... It means his West Side Story remake is more homework than entertaining.

So I guess this means non-Spanish-speakers just shouldn't go see the movie at all -- they won't be able to understand the story -- and I guess a lot of them are making that exact choice.

I've never seen the original -- is it political? Is a major idea in the original that... the American dream is a lie? Or that "gringos" kill everything they touch?

India was so ruined by it, for centuries, that they were easy pickin's for the East India Company and British colonization. There is a lot of thoughtful reasoning that the British colonization actually helped to resuscitate Indian culture and nationhood. But they still hate the Brits.
Kind of written out of (or frankly not included) in most history books.
Saw something about it on a bathroom wall in Singapore.

It's not clear if No Time To Die was profitable.

$771 million is a lot of money...but not for a movie that cost about $300 million to make another $300 million (at least $200 million) to market and just sat on a shelf for a year which affected EON's balance sheet in material ways (interest payments, starting and stopping marketing at least twice, and such). All while theaters had their cut of each ticket.

I would honestly not be surprised if EON ends up losing $50 million or so on the box office returns, that it should make up rather easily through physical disc and streaming sales, though.

More franchises could be as infinitely rebootable if the producers were willing to simply recast their primary actors regularly, but they're terrified. LucasFilm could have rebooted Indiana Jones easily in the 90s with a new actor replacing Harrison Ford (possibly the plan with River Phoenix before he died), but they went the TV route instead which, ironically, tied the franchise to Harrison Ford more tightly than loosely.

87 If you put me in charge of Bond films here's what I would do:

First movie is him as a young man, in WWII being recruited to work as a Commando. Show his training and how despite being so raw and young, he's a natural who learns quickly and catches on after some really terrible mistakes. Show him on a raid where things go horribly wrong (someone leaked it to the Germans). He escapes and recovers in France with a girl whom he falls in love with, but no longer trusts anyone else.

She betrays him to the Germans but he manages to escape, make it to England, and eventually kills the guy who betrayed him and his fellow commandos. Churchill awards him and says that young fellow has a future. The future M is there and agrees, and has a proposal about building a new intelligence services after the war.

The next films are period-accurate films in order closer to Fleming's original books, set in the 50s and 60s.

90 I still say Skyfall was one of the best Bond movies of the entire franchise -- an adventure with all sorts of layers that did not detract from you enjoying it as an adventure. It would have been a dynamite movie even if it had not been about somebody named James Bond. Not only did we get a number of great action sequences, we saw Bond as a strategist as well as a tactician; a glimpse of what made him what he is; and the scripters even went back to the original Fleming material for part of his backstory and the names of his parents.

Grand stuff.

Yes "Troilus & Cressida" (Chaucer's original about 250 yearliet) does have some similarities, BUT the story "Romeo & Juliet" was based on a "true" early Renaissance story.

Cool fact: the Nurse reference an earthquake when Juliet was born. We know from the play, set in July, that she was born 2 August (Lammas, or Loaf Mass) and that she would be turning 14. There was a recorded earthquake on that date in the 1300s.

French playwright Edmond Rostand, who wrote "Cyrano de Bergerac," wrote a comic version in which the father are plotting to bring the kids together by pretending to forbid their relationship...

112 Ian Fleming's 'Casino Royale' is one of my favorite genre novels. The thing I like most about it is Bond's transformation as the story progresses. When we first meet him, Bond is presented as brutal, even animalistic, and views women solely as recreation. Then he meets Vesper Lynd and falls in love. At one point, he admits to her that he's killed good people in the course of his career and feels badly about it but goes on because the stakes are high in the spy game and it's all he knows. We genuinely feel it when she betrays him even though she was being horribly coerced into doing so.

So much yet-to-be realized potential in the Bond character. So many good stories that could be made with him. Instead, we get this. Fleming deserves better.

My doctor is actually from South Africa. She is a generally nice looking woman (at least 10-15 years younger than me). At first I thought she was Australian, then looked it up and she grew up and got her Medical Dr from Witwatersand in SA.
She does still have kind of a charming accent, when she is not mad at me about something.

Some channel was playing Star Wars movies over the weekend. It got me to thinking about how I'd seen A New Hope six times in the theater as a kid. And when it came on, I realized I hadn't seen the latest installment at all. Nevermind that this completely stands the books on their head. The idea is that men and women access magic in different ways, and that the male way of doing it has been corrupted so that any man who tries will go crazy.

Only the Dragon Reborn can learn to do it. So a female Dragon would be just like any other woman.

And Rand Al'Thor is the Dragon Reborn, so if the series makes it anyone else, they'll need to do a complete rewrite of the source material. No way that can end badly.

Correct, men use the male-half of the magic which shows up as black "weaves", and the women use the female half, which shows up as white weaves. The effects in the show are pretty cool. Anyway, I think part of Robert Jordan's tale is that men and women are at odds, at least those in power, with deadly consequences. The dragon-reborn, if he is a savior instead of the anti-christ, can bring the sexes to work together to 'break' the wheel-of-time they are otherwise stuck having to repeating over and over. Work together and break the wheel, or not and break the world again to repeat. That's what I remember anyway. YMMV.
New politics says that view (men and women working together) is problematic. Hopefully they can reconcile their woke bona-fides in the intro with something that works closer to the theme in the source material.

It is. It still has a few silly Moore era bits, but was overall one of my favorites. Lots of good suspense and interesting interplay: who's the good guy? Who's the bad guy?

Said below, just watched it again last week. Its a pretty racial immigrant bigotry preach fest. the kids run wild, bad homes (officer Krupke song) and its kind of a law of the jungle lifestyle. Couple senseless deaths later you get a morale.

It was pretty preachy. Couple good songs. A lot of "dance fighting" which Garrett would probably enjoy.

I saw a Forensic Files type show years ago, where this buttoned-up, staid Texas sheriff was explaining to the interviewer that he stumbled on to a sex criminal because other local perverts knew him as a peeper who was "in to, uh, what they call, uh, 'golden showers,'" and that the MO fit the crime in question.

This guy was evidently physically disgusted by all of this, and very uncomfortable answering these questions about this suspect. Like, pulling on his collar, turning red, spitting the words out. That's how I felt explaining what furries are to my stepdaughter.

The 1974 outbreak killed 77 people in KY, 29 in the town of ~1200 people I was raised in, some only 100 meters or so from my Folks place. There were over 300 total killed over several streets.

442 I actually liked "No Time to Die". Much better than what I had expected. Then again my expectations going into the film were as low the Marianas Trench, so I suspect it was hard to be disappointed.

One thing about that film that was really disturbing was the baddies genetically modified super bioweapons. Yes I know much of that tech is fiction (for now). However malevolent rogue intelligence agencies, mad scientists with no ethical or moral restraints and the peril posed by these bioweapons in the wrong hands are not fiction.

Can't speak to theater peoples intelligence, but about 90% of the male dancers in stage and movie productions (and a good proportion of the crew and non-dancing cast) are really fun-loving fellows.

And no matter what dialect they used there are subtle differences between them so that it's possible that not all Spanish speaking people will understand exactly what the dialogue is meant to convey.
It just reminded me of an old TV show in which the man being honored as Hispanic Police Officer of the year pointed out that while he was of Columbian descent, the awards dinner had a completely Mexican atmosphere.
