Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: More December Edition!Notice that is not English on the blackboard [h/t]Kindltot More Not English on the Blackboard Last week our pal Oddbob made a comment that I noted for further discussion this week, and here 'tis. A few years ago, and maybe once since then, the Book Thread did a thread specifically inviting lurkers to delurk. I wonder how much response the Gun Thread would get with something like that. What a great idea! I try and welcome new commenters whenever I can, and even start the thread off each week with an invitation for lurkers to de-lurk and join the fun. Still, I often receive email from people with a question or comment they felt silly asking or were otherwise hesitant for everyone else to see. So first things first, you are always welcome to email me, and I try to respond before the following week's thread goes up. If more than a week goes by and you haven't received a reply, please email me again. I have to admit my system for tracking these things is not the most advanced, and my brain is drying out with advanced age so my memory isn't what it used to be. If you are sending me stuff to include in the thread, I generally reply to those at least a day before I am going to use them. Again, if you have a specific question for me, just ask and I will try to get you an answer as soon as possible. Second, every single person who comments on this thread was a newbie at some point as far as guns and shooting are concerned, so don't feel like your question isn't worthwhile. There may be others tuned in at that very moment who are wondering the same thing, and you would be doing them a favor, too. Please don't think a question or observation you have is too basic. The value of this thread, if there is one, is in helping people improve their shooting and enjoyment of the shooting sports in general. If something is holding you back or you are unsure how to approach a problem, we have a bunch of people here with a wide range of knowledge, so just ask! Lastly, even if you aren't a shooter and are just shooting-curious, speak up and say hello! If you find a particular topic or area of shooting interesting, let us know what that is. I rely on you all a lot for thread material because it's not only way more interesting than listening to my B.S. for three hours, it keeps the content fresh, relevant, and most importantly interesting to you. Hope to see you in the comments! A couple of years ago, Colt licensed US Ordinance to make about 1,000 replicas of its XM177E2 carbine, best known for its use by Military Assistance Command Vietnam's Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG), aka Special Operations forces such as SEAL teams and Rangers. Made more as a collector's piece than a tactical carbine, this retro rifle tries to include as many actual features from the originals as possible, such as the vinyl coated collapsible stock, cut down bayonet lug, selector stops, and the same Colt roll marks as the originals. The production run used the same serial number range as the originals, with a "V" tacked on the end to differentiate the replicas. The target was shot at 20 yards from a standing position. Not bad for a collector's piece. Coming in at just over six pounds and a bit over thirty inches long with the stock collapsed, it's not hard to understand why my platoon sergeant and Vietnam era veterans in my 1991 Operation Desert Storm platoon preferred this over the M-16A1s issued to us. It's not hard to see where the roots of today's M4 sprang from.Nice rifle and nice shooting, Ed L! Thank you! I've shot this! More than once! Ed is an 02/07 and has built 2 more of these, neither of which runs reliably. But Bob's original keeps on keepin' on! Video was done by Rob762 at Big Sandy. How cool is that? Small world, huh? Thanks Blasternaz! Has the Gun Thread cover the Mantis 10 Elite - Shooting Performance System? I've read some stuff and am sort of ambivalent. My son wants to get it for me. I'm not sure. Anything anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.I am almost positive we covered the Mantis 10 at some point, but I can't recall when it was. Almost certainly in the last year, but that still covers a lot of territory. Anyone have any thoughts to share on the Mantis x10 Elite system? A: Second Focal Plane scopes. Why? Because all of my shooting is done at fixed, known distances. I don't need to range, or determine the distance to the targets. When I am correcting for windage, I just convert the correction to correspond with features on the target, say the outside line on the 10 ring or the middle of the 9 ring or whatever. On a 1,000 yd F-Class target, the "X" ring is a 5 inch diameter circle and the 10 ring is 10 inches. When I calculate wind, I solve for minutes (MOA) of deflection based on my read of the conditions, apply them to the target, and take the shot. Say a 2mph wind has a .5 MOA effect on a bullet at 1,000 yards; I hold right or left out on the edge of the 10 ring in that condition (.5 MOA x 10.47" = ~5", or about the edge of the 10 ring) and let the wind blow the bullet back to the middle. Some might consider this an extra step, but with practice it can be done as quickly as trying to use the reticle to measure holdovers. Try it! Precision Rifle (PRS) and some other competitive shooting disciplines involve shooting at variable distances where the ability to measure the range to targets effectively is important, and first focal plane scope might be better suited for those applications. In the end, just use whatever works best for you. Do you have a preference?? Well this certainly seems uncomplicated and convenient to use. Gun Basics 101 Choices for concealed carry? Another fine week in Wyoming!! Gunshow in Laramie this weekend... So, we did not shoot on Friday, and skipped off to the show early Saturday AM. The weather Friday into Saturday was awful so a lot of vendors could't make it. I bought 300 Large Pistol primers, and 100 Hornady 75 grain bullets for the "Weasel educates an idiot" program. My big order of reloading stuff should be here this week.... Shooting went well ish. One airpistol had a catastrophic seal failure when i installed the CO2 bulb. The second is really accurate, but will not pierce a shoot n see target. Will bring NRA air pistol targets next time. Finished with the S&W 45 ACP model 1917. All in all, good day at the range... I thought it might be interesting to try a super small gun/mouse gun. This beretta is somewhat interesting as it has a tip up barrel. At the range, the gun would not cycle = the spent cartridge would either not eject, or would get stuck in interesting ways in the ejection port area. I ran to a nearby Cabelas to get some different ammo. Still no good. I went back the next day to the range with more different ammo, still no good. There are a lot of reviews of this particular gun on YT. With a lot of similar problems, and suggested solutions. Most people have found that CCI ammo works well, but that is not obtainable in my neck of the woods. Anyway. Not looking for suggestions necessarily. The gunsmiths in this area of North Idaho are flat out. So I wrote to Beretta on Friday. Sort of just sharing my week. Posted by: MikeM at December 12, 2021 07:30 PM (YsLaz) 87
Thanks Ed L. for showing us your XM177 replica--it was highly thought of from all sources that I read in about that theater by the people that used them.
There are enough parts floating around via online sellers that people can assemble their own--only caveat is either permanently attach the XM177 clone flashhider to the short barrel using tack welding or blind pinning, or use a longer 16 inch barrel. Brownells sells parts or complete rifles that are replicas of early AR's as well. Dunno about the XM177. Posted by: whig at December 12, 2021 07:30 PM (9hXN1) 88

Two scopes FFP for practical rifle, the rest SFP. I'm proficient in mildot, but for the regular match I ran that had unknown distance targets, I counted my steps from a known distance. I had calculated how many paces per click of elevation and fed in the clicks as I went. One class I attended I was partnered with a guy who never heard of a mildot and never touched his scope settings, and I had to make up an entire new system of communication so we could spot for each other. It wasn't optimal but it worked out OK.

Oh, and the DT-28 in the Soviet classroom pic is interesting. Long out of service by then, though probably still in storage in big numbers, and possibly in use by Bloc countries.
Two young (30s) Russian immigrants had one at the range 2 years ago. One of the guys had re-welded the parts kit receiver back together and of course had it set up as a semi-auto. The Fat Man came early for my furry ass this year.
I had entered a raffle drawing for a 1903 Springfield Mark I way back in August at a gun range I visit periodically. I forgot all about it and they called last week to say I was the winner. Shit, I never win anything. I picked her up Friday and got her home and cleaned her up. Barrel is dated 1/19 and the bolt is correct with the swept back handle, but the stock is wrong with no relief under the Pederson device cutout and the mag cut off/on switch is a standard one and not the original "W". Barrel does have a "P" with small letters to the side marking back toward the chamber but no markings whatsoever on the stock. Receiver is in the 1050000 range and has the Hatcher hole. I will shoot and zero her and maybe donate her to a certain group of morons who meet in Texas every year for a door prize. Not bad for $20.00. MikeM, Check the chamber as a rough chamber can fail to extract properly. Those can be polished out.
See if a cleaned extracted .22 LR fired casing or .22 LR dummy function testing cartridges go into and out of the chamber. If it sticks when manually working the fired casing or the dummy function testing round in and out of the chamber, then you might need to have the chamber polished. The other, if it is well used, could be a worn ejector and/or extractor. A function testing cartridge dummy should show you if that it the case as well. 137 Rhomboid, if you ever need an expedient fix for something like that pinion--heavy grease can work in a pinch as it provides enough resistance to jarring by recoil for it to continue to hold position.

andycanuck, you were looking for "papasha", of PPsh-41, my grail gun. I'd also accept a PPsh-40, the forged metal version. These were instantly very popular with the invading Wehrmacht, which of course captured a crap-ton of them. Trying to guesstimate how many rounds of Soviet/eastbloc surplus 54R I've shot, without a problem - probably somewhere 2-3,000. Once did have some untrustworthy 54R yellow tip (heavy ball, 182g) given to me by a fellow RO, tossed 'em after 2 or 3 "click ..... 1/2 second ..... bang!" rounds. I figure temperature, and most likely during my friend's custody of them. Those vaccuum sealed spam cans of Soviet ammo keep quite well in most conditions.
And as I saw in the Far East, the Soviets had some pretty impressive low-tech storage designs that avoided extreme temps. Posted by: rhomboid at December 12, 2021 08:00 PM (OTzUX) 179

Weasel! Thank you for the thread and the content.
Interesting experience this week that involved 2 trips to the range. Bought a very used Beretta 21A, aka, bobcat, wood grips. It came with 100 rounds of ammo. Sort of just sharing my week. Posted by: MikeM at December 12, 2021 07:30 PM (YsLaz) My best friend has this exact pistol. For him, and his wife before she passed, it would only digest CCI's MiniMags reliably. Nothing else. Speaking of Russians (apparently), range trip yesterday featured a Bulgarian Makarov in 9mm Mak of course.
These 8 shot single stack pistols run like a truck, I've had the safety come loose and still keep firing. (But don't keep firing once you notice the safety is swinging loose) The sights are fine and a little hard to pick up but they have lots of daylight on either side of that super thing, Walther PP style front sight. That, plus the fixed barrel and a good SA trigger press makes for a very accurate pistol. Very. Present and fire drills (two shots each) put everything in 10 ring and damn near everything but 3 rounds out of 20 in the X ring at 7 yards. The real enemy is just the usual trigger jerking. I can't really endorse carrying a 8 shot DA/SA pistol when you can get a 15 round 9mm for roughly the same size and weight, but it's a good range toy and a man could do much worse if he needed to poke holes in someone 8 times. Ran fine. Turned out, he was using that "thumb forward" style and jamming the slide with his grip. I realized it when I was watching him shoot.
Maybe have someone watch you to see if you're doing anything like that. Posted by: Former Gun Owner Check the chamber as a rough chamber can fail to extract properly. Those can be polished out. Posted by: whig Much appreciated both of you. About the polishing, yes, one YT commenter suggested that. A simple procedure with some super fine emory type material (he called it crocus cloth). And about the way I am holding the gun. You may be right. The reason I say that is that I did take a couple shots after cleaning and lube at a nearby, but safe location, and the gun worked fine. But it was only two shots. Then I went to the range and it was a shxtshow. So that was a bit of a mystery to me. But if I am jamming the slide with my grip, that would make sense. When I carefully aim, use two hands etc, I am messing up the gun. Posted by: MikeM at December 12, 2021 08:02 PM (YsLaz) 185

Hey y'all! Jesse and I hit the range Saturday. I shot the P365, which I hadn't shot since my embarrassingly bad day at the range in Texas (literally no shots on paper). I shot only 10 rounds this time. I put the target at 15 ft. 1st few shots... not on paper. Range Master Roy had given me a fresh piece of cardboard so I was able to see holes a couple inches below the paper. OK. This is helpful info. I adjust my sight alignment and try again. 6 of 10 shots on paper, most of them low. But a little better. After we got home Jesse measured the sights and found a slight difference between the front and rear, so it's possible they may need adjusting to work for my vision. I'm probably still flinching (although Jesse watches my hands and doesn't see anything obvious).
I finished up with the S&W model 1917 .45, which I hadn't shot in awhile. I tend to be a little high with it, and the grips aren't quite comfortable, it feels a little contorted to get my finger on the right spot on the trigger. It's still fun to shoot. My target isn't pretty but I made progress. I have some info to work with. Posted by: screaming in digital at December 12, 2021 08:02 PM (kTRt4) 187

170 EdL. Those front sights if not moved can have some stiff resistance. I would be seriously surprised if the front sights were permanently fixed. You might find an owners manual online that would tell you or buy a reprint from somewhere like Ebay/Gunbroker.
Alternatively, try some Kroil (or other penetrating oil) and light tapping all around the periphery of the sight itself with something like a non marring punch and a brass hammer. If the sight depresses at all, then it is adjustable, just stiff--possibly has crud in the spring making it difficult to compress. Posted by: whig at December 12, 2021 08:03 PM (9hXN1) 191

My favorite recent-ish related story was the discovery of 5K (?) Sturmgewehr 44s in Syria during the start of their little unpleasantness by rebels, in a guvamint warehouse. Makes perfect sense - probably very early Soviet aid under their Friendship and Cooperation treaty, the 1970s. Soviets would send lots of WWII stuff, mostly their own, to their allies or partners around the world. Never did hear what happened to those. Talk about a treasure trove discovery. Whig, my platoon sergeant and another E-5 in my platoon spent time with MACV-SOG (67-68 or thereabouts, I think). They carried them for a while, until officers pulled rank and took them away. This is off-topic, and yet it isn't. You mentioned up thread that we are losing our heroes from WW2. We're losing those from the Vietnam War too. My twin brother had a heart attack Wednesday and made it to the hospital but his heart has stopped twice since. I'm afraid tomorrow I have to say goodbye.
And he was a hero. I once described here how he won his silver star. His bronze star with a v was so unbelievable I don't think they could put it in a movie. His battalion's job was to make a base safe. He would tour at nightfall. If the villages were noisy--cooking, children playing--he knew it would be a quiet night. Quiet villages: probably an attack. Once he and two of his men surprised an entire battalion. "So I drove through the side of the building," he said. "WHAT?" I said. "It was a flimsy building." And he and his men set their jeeps up in a triangle and took on the battalion. They were rescued by helicopters. One very big one, others for defense. They unscrewed their machine guns from the hoods of their jeeps and one by one were pulled up a pole to the big helicopter, shooting their way up. Oh, buddy, I'm going to miss you. The late 1800s were a great, inventive, fascinating explosion in gun design. Some stupid crazy crap was tried and discarded, a lot of brilliant stuff was invented, and some great ideas that should have stuck around were abandoned (like the revolving shotgun). Gun design has kind of slowed in recent years, like we've either run out of ideas, or there's not much left to figure out for percussion black powder weapons.
I liked ideas like gyrojet rounds and electrothermal but neither was really practical. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at December 12, 2021 08:07 PM (KZzsI) 205

Yeah ... moving from target to combat and focusing on mechanics and platform is/was a huge shift. But I'm finally seeing consistent results. FWIW - it helped to to change up training drills regularly around some variation of the 5x5 drill. That really moves me away from aiming and back into "seeing and shooting." My platform is good enough that pushing up from 1shot/sec to 5/second actually improves my performance. And holding off any analysis until 5 shot groups are complete ... another real help. The most productive deer-hunting scope I've ever used, was a Leupold MKII Gold Ring, in the 6x40 spec, attached to a Ruger M-77 International (18" bbl., Mannlicher stock) in .308.
The finer reticle in the Duplex setup, corresponded to exactly 16" at 100 yards, the commonly accepted estimation of a mature buck from ear to horizontal aspect ear. If the ears were smaller than the fine duplex, the deer was either a juvenile, or standing well further than 100 yds away. If the deer overfilled the inner reticle, he was closer than 100 yds. And you could make reasonable guesstimates that were well within 20 yds of correct. Took at least 35 deer with that rig. That rifle went to help funding a 1999 divorce. Having to sell it was cause enough for divorce anyway, right? Count in the 2nd fp/MOA cult, please. Ommmmm. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at December 12, 2021 08:17 PM (QzJWU) 228

Weasel, imho, I agree with Pillage Idiot.
Reloading ammo is a bit scary before you have done it and rifle cartridges can be more complex to reload. A lot of people would benefit from even learning to reload handgun cartridges for example. What also might be useful is to demonstrate how precision reloading affects accuracy at the range by comparing different ammo with the same rifle. And then explaining the different steps to match your handloads with a particular rifle. Posted by: whig at December 12, 2021 08:18 PM (9hXN1) 230
Newsweek posts this headline tonight: "Donald Trump and Bill O'Rielly Tour begins with empty seats in Florida!" Har! Har!
Except, nope..as several actual photos of the event and the organizers explained - the upper-level seats were off-limits, no one could buy seats there. Ther actual venue was - sold out! Newsweek reporters of course know this, because liberals would check that first hoping against hope that it wasn't sold out - but when these 8 year olds found out it was sold out, they tried to use the "off limits" seats to get a "no one showed up" narrative going...you should see the actual photos of the event - it was packed. With the fact that an M-4 with a red dot is really a 200 yard and in rifle due to how fragmentation works, I use a 50 yard zero on all of mine. Hold center mass from 25 to 200 and I'm assured of a hit. 2" offset for 25 and in due to sight height over bore.
If I know I'm going to go farther than that, I pick a different rifle, something with magnification, an 18" barrel, and shooting 77gr OTM. And yes, I know the M-4 can go a lot farther than 200, but not with the same lethality it can't, and with a red dot the shooting gets difficult. I would definitely attend the MoMe reloading class. However, I believe at least two of the "yes" answers above are from people that already reload their own ammo. You might need an "intro" to reloading portion for the noobs, and then move into the "advanced" class where the noobs can at least follow the terminology. 226 MAE, make sure he used NATO gauges instead of .308 Win. On old military rifles, the chambers are generous so as to load dirty, corroded ammo and often using commercial cartridge gauges results in a false out of headspace rating.
Using a field gauge is pretty common for old rifles as headspace greater than GO gages but not closing on the field is pretty common. Either you accept short brass life, necksize for it only, or reset the barrel back a thread or so and rechamber. Under such conditions, using the cheaper steel ammo for one time use makes sense. Enfields, in general, have never been known for their long brass life for reloading anyway. Posted by: whig at December 12, 2021 08:22 PM (9hXN1) 244

Manufacting oils and greases often harden over time due to oxidation into a polymer as the solvent dissipates. Thus, your spring could literally be glued together. I think Kroil has acetone mixed into a very light oil to help it to get into the smallest of crevices and dissolve old hardened grease or oil. Breaks up rust as well. Mark brought his Marakov to play with. I compared the 9mm and the .380 with the Russian bullet. Kind of a thicker, slightly taller .380. Nice pistol. A little snappy on the recoil in comparison to my G42 and G19. I could certainly feel a difference between the all steel pistol vs a polymer. Got reacquainted with my G19 as I hadn't fired her for over a year. I hit all head at 15 yards. Flocks may be clunky, but, they work. And they run dirty or wet or muddy. Having had some very (for me) informative conversations to you, you'd mentioned several interesting tools that I, a causally experienced reloader had never heard of. Your tool that measures one bullet's ogive to the next was a revelation to me, I'd never heard of that. And the one that determines the ideal ogive to base-rim length, as more important than overall cartridge length, too. Hence, my idea. Maybe not go through the entire Zen of producing your Match Quality rounds. But a PRIMER (swidt?) on the tools and processes they allow, that we common reloaders likely have never heard of, nor know how to use. Kind of a "Show & Tell", if you will? Quite seriously, you had a whole list of tools, vendors, suppliers and gurus, and I could not keep up with the taking of notes. Maybe have some xeroxed handouts of those lists for the interested parties? Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at December 12, 2021 08:27 PM (QzJWU) 257

If Weasel is offering a class in reloading and you're at all interested in shooting rifles over 100 yards, you should go!! Shooting rifles and reloading are two sides of the same coin. Weasel's buddy and top F-Class shooter Erik Cortina does interviews with other top shooters in their reloading rooms. The first question is usually, "do you shoot to reload, or reload to shoot?" The answer is almost always a combo of the two.

Greetings all -- lurked here for the last year, never posted 'till now. Yup, I'm one of the deplorables who joined the ranks of gun nuts in the last 18 months. I've owned a Browning BDA .380 since the mid '80s, but only took it to the range a couple three times in those years. When buildings started to burn last year I broke down and purchased an M&P15, and then a Mossberg 930 this year. Figured between the three weapons I'd be able to cover pretty much any self defense situation. Took rifle and shotgun classes with range time, and have gone to the range on my own a half dozen times trying to get more comfortable with these firearms. I'm not ex-military like a lot of ya'll, and didn't grow up with guns, so a lot of what I'm learning (and unlearning, thank you Hollywood) is new to me. My ultimate goal is to become comfortable with these tools without becoming complacent, but I'm not close to being there yet. Thanks to all of you for the advice you've offered us newbies in these interesting times.

What sort of MGB question? Posted by: jesse in dc at December 12, 2021 08:21 PM (kTRt4) Jesse, I was driving my 1980 a couple of months ago and when I pushed in the clutch to stop at a red light there was a loud grinding noise that stopped as soon as I let off the pedal. Later, I saw some smoke, or steam wafting from under the chassis. Took it to one of my usual places that has a guy who owned a GT at one time, and he said they found shavings in the gear box. I asked the guys on the MG Experience and they all said he's wrong, it's the throw out bearing on the clutch. It happened once more only, but never again when I've used the car. I only use it for short trips, but wife doesn't want me to fix it, just let it set and rot away in the garage as a lawn ornament. Didn't buy it for that, so trying to find out if a new clutch might solve the problem, as the kits seem to be only around $75. Of course, I'd have to have someone do the work for me, and convince her to let me do it. Even if just to make it sellable. Thanks. Posted by: OrangeEnt at December 12, 2021 08:32 PM (7bRMQ) 272

Range Report...
Does anyone shoot AR's with a suppressor? I decided to take the plunge last March and purchased a can at my local gun store. Over 260 days later, I'm still waiting for the ATF to review my application. But, I can use the suppressor at the store's indoor range, which I found time to take advantage of last Saturday. First off, shooting suppressed is a lot of fun, especially when using subsonic ammunition. It really does make the shooting experience that much more enjoyable, and your fellow shooters really appreciate the reduced decibel levels as well. However, there is a downside. Suppressors redirect gas backwards. This increase in back pressure doesn't present much of an issue in side charging automatic weapons, bolt action rifles, or most pistols. But AR type rifles usually employ a rear charging handle, and combined with a direct impingement (DI) gas system, all that gas is directed straight back into the shooter's face. So, after firing 10 or so rounds of 300 BLK down range, I managed to personally experience "suppressor gas face". It's no myth! Initially, my eyes started to burn, followed by a nasty coughing fit. I can't imagine using a can on a full auto AR! Posted by: PacosMojo at December 12, 2021 08:33 PM (cOyfh) 276

Does anyone shoot AR's with a suppressor?
Posted by: PacosMojo The smell of gunsmoke is normally pleasant, but it's a bit much when the charging handle gap shoots a plume of smoke directly into your nose with every shot. The solution is an Adjustible Gas Block. I haven't looked at the state of those for a few years, hopefully there are new ones with improvements. The most important feature is that the adjustment screw/knob needs to have some sort of lock or tensioner on it so that it doesn't walk itself out under recoil. PacosMojo,
If you are using a suppressor on a gas impingement system like the AR--you have several choices--install an adjustable gas block (one of the higher end ones if you want to switch between suppressed and non suppressed, install an adjustable gas key on the bolt--see Rubber City Armory for that, (or there is a whole bolt that is made to easily switch back and forth)--think that is made by Gemtech, or put in a piston system--Superlative and Adams arms make those. That should reduce your blowback. Posted by: whig at December 12, 2021 08:42 PM (9hXN1) 305

Range report: a pretty good morning at ESS today. In the pursuit of accuracy, I slapped an accuwedge on the AR and finally got around to using a rear bag rest (cue berating by Weasel for not doing that sooner). The groups tightened up nicely albeit with an occasional flyer which is fine with me considering it's M193 ammo and a Frankenstein build.
On the pistola side, I'm almost there with the recoil mitigation. The Beretta 92FS has a big butt (even with the slim alumagrips) but after paying attention to how my grip was breaking after every shot, I was able to make adjustments to prevent it. With a little tweaking and practice I can start focusing on working the trigger faster. Posted by: Thicc Boi at December 12, 2021 08:44 PM (zThcc) 311

There's still some innovation taking place. Check out the Laugo Arms Alien pistol. It employs a gas-delayed operating system, along with a slide which moves independently from the top strap. Apparently, barrel flip is nearly eliminated, making it easy to place follow up shots on target accurately and with great speed. Of course, all this innovation comes with a very hefty price tag. PacosMojos,
To continue, each of those work--the piston replacement system works really well on short barrel rifles or AR pistols, the adjustable gas key works when you cannot easily remove the front sight gas block ensemble, and the more expensive adjustable gas blocks have detents or even a switch. Make sure you can get to the adjustment with your handguard in place and that the adjustable gas block fits under your handguard. The cheap adjustable gas blocks use screws that carbon fouling makes impossible to adjust over time. Those are more useful for a dedicated upper for a particular load. I used the Rubber City Armory gas key adjustable on an AR pistol and it works fine on regular 55 gr. range fodder. I use the adjustable gas blocks on my larger caliber ARs to reduce the need for heavy recoil buffers and to adjust between ammo. I use the cheapo adjustables for range carbines dedicated to specific sd loads. Posted by: whig at December 12, 2021 08:51 PM (9hXN1) 332

The shop said nothing about the clutch. Still gotta get the wife to ok it because she's the only one working now. I don't want to let it just sit and rot away. 328 Paco, the Gemtech suppressed bolt carrier is pretty neat and reviews are good but I have never used that one.
Adams Arm kits have been around for a long time and Pat Sweeney (AR15 gunsmith guru and AR rifle competitor) really likes them. There are some issues with the buffer retainer pin due to bolt tilt that you may want to investigate--think they have a cheap fix for it. The Rubber City gas key is the easiest to install on a stripped bolt carrier. Posted by: whig at December 12, 2021 08:54 PM (9hXN1) 337

Improvisation is an art. When my unit mobilized at Ft. Coy in November 1990, the NCOs killed some time at the base museum. Among the vehicles on display outdoors was an old M16 halftrack equipped with a quad .50 mount. The NCOs wanted to "acquire" that quad .50 mount really bad to build a gun truck, but the museum folks said no. "Moonlight requisitioning" was out of the question because the halftrack was too visible from the post HQ. We ended up settling for some extra ring mounts instead of building the "Brinksmobile" the NCOs and mechanics wanted. Which was probably a good thing in the end. Hello Orange Ent.
It is the release bearing. Trans has to come out to change it. If you do not have over drive, the trans can be removed by itself. They will need a lift. Otherwise, just pull the engine and trans together, and separate the pair on the floor. Replace the entire clutch assembly, Pressure plate, disc and release bearing. I prefer Borg and Beck parts... It is what they came with. Things you might want to do while you are at it...Trans mounts. Flush and fill the tranny with the correct oil. MGBs are great fun cars. I use Kroil in small amounts, indoors, have never found it to be an issue.
Way back when I was trying every trick to clean up a few Mosin bores, I stood a receiver, bore plugged at chamber, vertically, filled with Kroil, for a week or two. Don't recall it making much difference. After draining, and crude patching to remove most of the oil, I would brush it out vigorously when doing this. I think this, plus my redneck/garage gunsmith attempt at electronic bore cleaning, might have brightened up one out of 5 bores. They shoot just fine, though. Maybe I'll try one out on my suppressed 300 BLK. And BTW, do those "gas busting" charging handles actually work?
Posted by: PacosMojo That has a mixed reputation from what I've read plus pricier than good adjustable blocks on sale. I generally build my own AR's and so adjustable gas blocks are as easy to put on an barrel as a fixed one. I used the Rubber City gas key on a short barrel AR pistol simply because it had a fixed F sight-gas block pinned to the barrel. Was a Rem/Bushmaster bankruptcy inventory sale which was chrome lined and cheap. Posted by: whig at December 12, 2021 09:10 PM (9hXN1) 368

As for gun in school, I think one of the best things for my youngest son was his learning how to shoot a shotgun in Boy Scouts. Being entrusted with a gun and being trained in how to handle it safely teaches responsibility like nothing else I can think of. I'd need some scuba gear, but what the heck. Posted by: RI Red Thanks. Well, old bushmasters usually have chrome lined barrels so drain the water and clean out the fish and it will be fine. I've used adjustable gas systems since I started building AR's years ago. They have come down a lot in price and usability. Part of the need for it was that the AR was designed around a 20 inch barrel and shortening that gas system led to hickups in functioning and parts wear. Posted by: Nemo You might try using something like a spray cleaning solvent first before disassembly. See if that helps. Your gunsmith might also have an ultrasonic tank to clean the bolt (if it doesn't have aluminum or plated parts) without disassembly. Some of those shotgun bolts are a pain to disassembly and put back together. Some aren't. If you disassemble, wear safety glasses and you might try disassembly in a cardboard box--if the spring lets loose as some do, the box will capture the parts. Hrothgar, yes. Guns can be an appreciating asset if you take care of them. This is especially true of desirable guns like the SP5. Cars (especially new cars) are a depreciating asset. Taking care of a car only slows the depreciation rate.

Posted by: JQ No problem JQ, There are some nice holsters for the XD in leather if you want--Bianchi makes several as do other makers. Just thought of one other thing that will help recoil, consider putting a light/laser combo on the accessory rail as that will hold the muzzle down when firing and make it easier for repeat shots. Reduce recoil a tad too. Posted by: whig at December 12, 2021 09:46 PM (9hXN1) 437
nurse.. maybe text me a good close up of the front receiver ring of your son's Mosin? With wood that beautiful, it very well might be a Polish made (1952/1953) variant. Which are relatively scarce, and very highly sought after.
Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at December 12, 2021 09:48 PM (QzJWU) 438
435 Nurse, most of the Mosin stocks are stained birch with shellac over the stain as issued. If it has extreme striping, then it is probably a laminate stock where slivers of wood are bonded together with glue. If you send a pix to Weasel, we can help identify it and what to do with it--shellac seals the stock so putting oil on it will simply make a mess, ditto for any poly finished stock.

442 YD scarcity and demand is what sets the price.
Some gun people only collect and right now WWII related gear is hot. 60 years ago, it was old Civil War blackpowder and Old West due to a bunch of Westerns and the Civil War centennial, and so on. WWI centennial spurred WWI arms getting a boost in price after languishing for years. Even new gaming software can spur demand for a particular rifle like the French Lebel. That being said, the M1 carbine is a fun gun to shoot, easy to reload for, and tame in recoil. If a firearm has already been shot, then it doesn't hurt the value to fire it now and again even if rare. Posted by: whig at December 12, 2021 09:57 PM (9hXN1) 448
Weasel, thank you for another edition of your ongoing chronicle of truth, ballistics, and The American Way.
OT: If anyone can get JJ Sefton's attention, please have him email me (see nic) as I have a vintage Dewalt radial saw I'd like to give to his new shop, coming soon to the upper midwest. On topic: Does anyone here have any experience with odd .22LR loads? Recently bought some 60gr .22LR Aguila ammo to try in my S&W 317 revolver. Also shot a couple of Federal .22LR ratshot rounds (all-brass crimped case) which resulted in a straight-wall case just under 1" long, empty. A Stinger case is around 3/4" and a standard .22LR case, about 5/8", with the Aguila case around 1/2" long, roughly equal to a .22 short. It strikes me "they" could make a .22 round with the shotshell brass and a heavy bullet, 50-60gr, taking the velocity from 960fps in the subsonic Aguila up to the 12-1600fps range, that could *only* be loaded into a revolver or a bolt-action with a suitable chamber (which I admittedly know little about). Any suggestions or friends at ammo manufacturers? Posted by: Cowboyneal at December 12, 2021 09:57 PM (U2zo0) 449

My range report from Nebraska: 200 rounds thru a Kahr/Auto-Ordnance M1911A1. Background: Got it for a good price, seller claimed it was a safe queen. It was dry...lubed the hell out of it. Installed Hogue 45000 grips. Didn't like the trigger either, so I installed a GI trigger. Sighting was reasonable...holy crap its been awhile since I was a young 2LT. No issues with stoppages so I was overall satisfied. Next step is to install an extended mag release. Good recoil therapy...and happy to see reasonably priced .45 ACP on the shelves again.

AR sight - Primary Arms 4-14 HUD-DMR ACSS 5.56 this scope gives me holds and ranging for a 19" IPSC target out to 1000 yards, plus 5 and 10 mph windage holds. It also has ranging and leads for military walking and running targets at 3, 4, and 5 hundred yards. It is designed for standard M193, 55 gr, but as adjusted on my rifle gives holds within and inch or so for mk-262 77 Grain as well.
I like this scope very much for its around $300 cost. Plus, Primary Arms is here in the Houston Area, not very far from my house. $300 dollar scope with a $3000 reticle. Posted by: An Observation sez China Joe not my president at December 12, 2021 10:01 PM (ctFUD) 458

Meanwhile, my buddy has an IBM M1 that's only worth about $700. I remember when those used to go for 1K, and that was almost 20 years ago, when the dollar was still valuable. It's a weird market.

449 Jim,
Arisakas used poison sumac as a finish (Japanese lacquer). If you sand those, the dust will be inhaled and cause a reaction on the inside of your lungs. Finish can only be removed by liquid stripping agents with protective gear. Mosin finishes used regular shellac and that can be stripped easily with denatured alcohol. The only issue is that will normally remove some of the stain as well. Another is to layer shellac by sanding with very fine sandpaper, applying a new layer of shellac, let it dry, sand, put another layer of shellac, etc. Depending on what was used, you can normally go from 3-6 layers of shellac thick. Major reason that you do not sand down military stocks is most people use too heavy grit when doing so and damage the cartouches as well as making the stocks out of proportion. Sometimes, on stocks like walnut, you can develop sensitivity to it by breathing in the dust. Occasionally, on newer shellac, it has some heavy metals in it to spur drying which calls for wet sanding if you have to do it. Collectors like the original as issued condition which in Mosins, most of the Russian ones were re-arseneled anyway post WWII for storage. Posted by: whig at December 12, 2021 10:08 PM (9hXN1) 461
YD, these are the factors that impact prices for vintage firearms:
- Original condition (original components as it came off the production line) - High condition (no/minimal wear and tear) - Provenance (where it's been during its military service life) Combine all three, and you have a high value collectible hitting five figures. A rebuilt, reconditioned firearm in poor shape with lots of wear, with no record of its service beyond its delivery date to US Army Ordinance is unlikely to get more than $1,000. Nurse,
I right-kidney carry a G30 in a Vedder IWB and just accept that I'm gonna have to unzip to draw. Here in the South Sound the weather is just as shitty and unpredictable as it is up there. I'm SE of Graham and 'Rainier' is in my back yard... Posted by: ChrisP at December 13, 2021 12:18 AM (GWAwu) 464
Posted by: 449 Nurse. Also, we'll dig you out some research on why you do NOT sand-down a Mosin Nagant with a shellacked stock.
I forget exactly which toxin is in the dust, but it's in the dust. If you do have to strip off the finish, it's done by chemical means, not by way of sanding. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX --------------- Was that the Japanese Arisaka that you were thinking of? They were sometimes finished with urishiol oil, the active ingredient in poison oak and poison ivy. You don't want to inhale that. Posted by: Max Entropy at December 13, 2021 12:22 AM (rGssv) 465
