I've always liked Benton's work.
ot, please tell me that the top-of-the-sidebar thing about 1984 is a joke ? joke, right ? lie if you have to. the part about "essentially happy with her life" is particularly horrifying. a morality play for Our Times, "lie back and think about Airstrip One". The depression was a bendy time in America
Bonnie and Clyde was on the teevee last week, so I watched it, really for the first time. I enjoyed seeing a believable depiction of depression era plain states and Texas...(everything so dry!)...but Faye Dunaway was terrible and looked at least ten years too old to be a credible Bonnie Parker. Posted by: Brave Sir Robin at December 13, 2021 09:50 AM (lGrs1) ++++ Mobile, all-terrain steam wasn't a very safe approach to the problem. It was a technically feasible approach, though, and the increase in yields made the risks worth it. Steam in agriculture and construction died fairly quickly with IC engines and electricity, but man was it a force multiplier even with the safety and reliability problems. And I like going to fairs and whatnot that have the old steam equipment. It's awesome. When I was a kid, the county next door had an annual steam festival and had all kinds of machines including a steam-powered press they used to make apple cider. All that big, noisy, smoky steam equipment made for the ideal outing for a little boy, I tell you. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at December 13, 2021 09:53 AM (DU+/6) 84

53 Very neat picture of middle mechanization. You have big steam machines, trucks hauling mechanical equipment, and horses and wagons to carry the comparatively lightweight produce out of the fields. A little bit of everything.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at December 13, 2021 09:40 AM (DU+/6) Looks to me to be a steam powered tractor pulling a mechanical harvester. Horses pulling wagons of harvested wheat to the thresher. I am guessing a gasoline powered thresher and a gasoline powered truck to carry off the resulting grain. IIRC, there is a re-enactor event in eastern WA on this. Around where I live (within an hour or so, anyways) there are "plow days" where folks bring their antique tractors (including garden tractors) and just plow. Good place to learn the finer points of equipment setup. Went to a fall festival about 15 years ago and watched a steam powered machine making shake shingles at a rate of 1 every 2-3 seconds. Haven't found any bodgers making spindles using a tree-branch powered lathe, though. Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at December 13, 2021 10:04 AM (8C7+r) 125

The undulating land with the swooping curvature of its fertile plain displays and reflects the eternal oneness of the earth and womankind. The life-bearing dynamism of the land represents the essential femininity of the earth.
The juxtaposition of the earth mother with the polluting mechanical equipment of industrial farming shows how the tendency of men to rape and destroy transcends the merely interpersonal and extends to all things in all contexts. Not satisfied with dominating and raping his wife, the farmer uses his tools to dominate and rape the earth itself. Agricultural art is often subversive against the zeitgeist in which it was created. This piece is an example, masquerading as a "slice of life" reflecting mechanized farming in the new world, but deliberately revealing the oppression of the patriarchy as it dominates all things. The actual quote was "How you Feel about Inflation Will Determine Its Longevity"
What the actual F. Posted by: Marcus T at December 13, 2021 10:20 AM (YmKky) ++++ Unlikely, but it could help determine its severity. Inflation creates odd incentives that can be self-feeding in a feedback circuit. If you anticipate inflation will continue, you might be inclined to pull forward demand to get whatever the thing is before it gets more expensive. This adds inflationary pressure by increasing demand in an already supply-constrained environment. I am a prime example. I will need a roof sometime between three and five years from now. I am tempted just to do it now while it will be probably $14k in stead of in 3-5 years when it might be $22k. I might do this, but it will also contribute to the overall problem to some small degree. But there's a problem here, I suspect. The National Guard are mostly part-timers who have day jobs. So for the NG to send medical staff to a hospital, they're going to have to call up ... medical stuff from other places that were working there until they were called up. This should be a criminal act. The State decimates its medical staff, then takes people who probably have paying gigs in the same in industry, pulls them away from their homes, pays them pennies for their highly valuable services. In the meantime, all hospitals have their tribal procedures and traditions such where an interloper takes time to get up to speed. Furthermore, just jamming an unvetted person into a role that has not gone through any interview or certification process doesn't help the hospital other than receiving free slave labor to do scut work. This is an entirely demeaning process that trivializes the specialized knowledge expected in the medical profession. We are not widgets. I see Anne Rice has assumed room temp. Considering the topics in her work, I don't suppose that would bother her any.
The only book of hers I enjoyed thoroughly was Belinda, a semi-Lolita story (but with twists) that she wrote early on as "Anne Rampling." It plays out partly in Noo Awlins, yeah yeah yeah, but also in San Francisco, where AR lived for a time. It's not supernatural at all and has some real suspense, though not the action-adventure-danger kind. Her other things I've read were long and talky, full of "Look how well I'm writing" prose and attitudes. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at December 13, 2021 10:33 AM (txdEq) 289

Usual laugh-a-sentence article from The Bulwark today. Even had a Jonah tweet embedded at the end for good measure!
(1) Chris Wallace bails on Fox News. This story is both stunning and significant. And, yes, a story can be shocking, but ultimately not at all that important. Chris Wallace's abrupt departure is both, because Wallace was one of the last redoubts of journalistic integrity at Fox, and it comes at a moment when the network's careen toward crackpottery seems utterly uncontrolled. Posted by: Intrepid Bulwark AoS Liaison at December 13, 2021 10:31 AM (JCZqz) LOL! Gawd what tripe. But I think someone at Fox has figured out that Trump and the Republicans are going to be back on top soon, and they're positioning themselves. That doesn't mean they're on our side; but they're mercenary and at least not stupid, and (as opposed to the Bulwark idiot) have figured out that it's better to be on the winning side rather than the losing one. The left doesn't allow declarative statements of fact that do not comport with The Narrative.
This is why the vaguely worded eupemisms and talking in third person. "An SUV runs over parade goers". "Would be robbers" or "botched" robbery or "attempted" robbery. Or the classic "robbery gone bad", which implies that the natural order of things is for armed robbery to go "good". It also explains calling perpetrators "victims". With government confetti-buck generators set on eleventy for years now monetary inflation was inevitable. But there's a "perception" that inflation is skyrocketing. How do people feel about their purchasing power cut in half while the quantity is reduced by 25% at the same time, and the ingredients imported from golly knows where, adulterated by golly knows what. Ya pays yer money and take yer chances. Fake money gets you fake food, at the end of the day. Posted by: Common Tater at December 13, 2021 10:35 AM (ubFZv) 299
Felenon Spoke: The College of Cardinals chooses the Pope but the Pope does not have to be a member of the College of Cardinals. In fact, he does not have to be a Cardinal. Apparently multiple Popes were not Bishops when elected; one was not even a priest when he was chosen and was consecrated as a priest, bishop and cardinal on successive days before he became pope.

At 06:00 this morning, the delivery window was "7:30 AM to 8:30 AM" At 08:00 this morning, the delivery window was "8:30 AM to 10:30 AM" Just now, the delivery window was "by 7:00 PM" Why do they even bother with delivery window? I told this Anne Rice story last week. In the late '90s, she apparently became enamored with the cat breed called Siberian and adopted several, only to lose interest in them and give them away a few years later -- around '03. That was the year I found Siberian cat Angelique in an empty parking lot. Miss Linda adopted her, since no one claimed her. Now that was not then, and is not now, an upscale area. Speculation: Did AR give one of her Siberians to someone who worked for her, a housekeeper or the like, who lived on the West Bank of the river? And did that person "lose" the cat, or accidentally on purpose let her run free . . .? We'll never know.
Given Angelique's contrary personality, I wouldn't be surprised to learn she spent her kittenhood with AR. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at December 13, 2021 10:50 AM (txdEq) 391

CNN:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi will stay until at least after the midterm elections, extending her nearly 20-year run as the House's top Democrat after she turns 82 and, perhaps, beyond. She is planning to file and run for reelection in her San Francisco district next year - at least for now - in keeping with her pattern of deciding about staying in Congress after the elections, when she likely will have won an 18th full term. And sources familiar with Pelosi's thinking say she isn't ruling out the possibility of trying to stay in leadership after 2022, despite her original vow to leave as the top House Democrat. She'll devote much of next year to raising money for Democrats as they try to hold their narrow majority, those sources tell CNN, adding to the nearly $1 billion her office calculates she has already raised for Democrats in her time as leader. John Stossel is suing Facebook after Facebook's 'fact checkers' labeled Stossel postings as "false and misleading"
So, in a court of law, in a legal filing, Facebook admits that its 'fact checks' are not really 'fact' checks at all, but merely 'opinion assertions.' This strikes me as public relations disaster, and possibly a looming legal disaster for Facebook, PolitiFact, Climate Feedback and other left-leaning entities that engage in biased "fact checking." Such "fact checks" are now shown to be simply an agenda to suppress free speech and the open discussion of science by disguising liberal media activism as something supposedly factual, noble, neutral, trustworthy, and based on science. Hard to believe "getting shit checked" cost $1700. If that shop did some repair on something related to trouble codes, I'd go back and have that shop run diagnostics (usually a deeper check on codes/conditions than what a $20 code reader can do). Then see how that lines up with an auto parts store diagnostic. Thing here is to see if the $1700 work broke something. Could be something like water getting into the wrong thing. I watched Noem's address to the SD state legislature. (Yes, it was refreshing after having to listen to our clown guv here.) There were two things I found interesting. One is that part of their strategy to deal with the homeless is to fund mental health facilities. They want to get them out of the prisons and also off the streets. The second is that they want to put funding into a cybersecurity program at the university. I'm surprised there isn't more focus on this in other states, as it's going to be a major growth industry.

First Omicron death confirmed in U.K. as PM warns of "tidal wave" of infections
Because one person died out of 7 billion? Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at December 13, 2021 11:04 AM Define "tidal wave". Let's look at the average amount of flu infections in USA during the typical flu season. Average taken from '12-'13 season through '16-'17 season. Illnesses: 29.4 million (163,333 per day) Hospitalizations: 458,000 (2,544 per day) Worldometers shows 50.7 million "COVID cases" over last ~2 years. Which is about 25 million per year. Which is 71,022 per day. Less than seasonal influenza. I bet the majority of people who freak out about "COVID cases" have no idea influenza cases are typically more than double in the average year, where no one has ever freaked out about it. Point of my #580 being that if the media and politicians reported on influenza season illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths the same way they have "COVID", people would freak out too. But we've never done that and for good reason. Had we reported COVID the same way as we always have seasonal influenza, this pandemic would have come and gone just like every other pandemic in our lifetimes. Just like H1N1 under Obama/Biden.
