Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Saturday Overnight Open Thread (12/11/21)A young man with his pants hanging half off his ass, two gold front teeth, and a half-inch thick gold chain around his neck walked into the local welfare office to pick up his check. He marched up to the counter and said, "Hi. You know, I just hate drawing welfare. I'd really rather have a job. I don't like taking advantage of the system, getting something for nothing." The social worker behind the counter said "Your timing is excellent. We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur and bodyguard for his beautiful daughter. You will have to drive his 2021 Mercedes-Benz CL and he will furnish your clothes." "Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You'll also be expected to escort the daughter on her overseas holiday trips. This is rather awkward to say but you will also have, as part of your job, the assignment to satisfy her sexual urges because the daughter is in her mid-20's and has a rather strong sex drive." The guy, just plain wide-eyed, said, "You're bullshittin' me!" The social worker said, "Yeah, well... you started it." Violent brawl breaks out at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City: video A violent brawl involving dozens of suited-up men broke out inside a casino in Atlantic City this week, chaotic footage shows. Police in New Jersey said the fight erupted at Harrah’s Resort just before 3 a.m. Tuesday, the Press reported. At least one person was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the melee, according to cops. Footage of the fight shows multiple people being thrown to the floor and punched inside one of the casino’s dining areas. Michael Nesmith, co-founder of the Monkees?
They were a total corporate invention by Don Kirshner. He invented them, and had a team of song writers (Carol King and Neil Diamond among them) write all their songs, and had session musicians do the music on the first record. They started flopping when they insisted on writing their own songs. Michael probably had some real talent, and wrote and recorded some songs after the Monkees disappeared. But they were just a fad. There's a guy named Alan Swinney. He is a Proud Boy, and he is not a nice person.
At two demonstrations in downtown Portland in August 2020, he brandished a loaded revolver, fired paintballs, and sprayed bear mace at Antifa people. The Portland judge hearing the case sentenced him to ten years in prison (one month less than the prosecutor wanted), in part because "he had not shown any remorse". Ten years. A couple of years ago, an Antifa person at a riot nearly beat someone to death with a metal rod in downtown Portland, resulting in a concussion and 35 stitches. He got less than six years. Curiously, when Antifa people convicted of violent felonies are sentenced, judges in Portland don't inquire whether the Antifa person has shown remorse. Given the lack of serious injury, without the politics I would bet that he would have gotten a couple of months in county jail, at most. Shuffling tv shows on Plex, watching an episode of Wonder Women, thing that just hit me was one of the reasons Lynda Carter was so beautiful was that she was tall, 5'10", so that made her long, coupled with her voluptuousness and gorgeous face, black hair blue eyes and the, ahem, smile.
So if she was 5'10", that means in a modest heel she was 6ft, if she wore a larger heel, she could be as tall as 6'2" Wow!!!! Posted by: Thomas Bender at December 11, 2021 10:18 PM (TO6k5) 77

Posted by: Tonypete at December 11, 2021 10:07 PM (mD/uy) I've known two instances where children died. In one case a young boy from my neighborhood was shot to death. As I was driving down the street I saw someone from a local tv station news van go up to his family home and knock. No one answered the door. In the other instance a girl died at a sports team practice. It turned out she had had a heart issue that could not have been predicted. A local news person tried to go into the funeral home to "interview" the parents. A friend of the family took the douchebag aside and gave him a statement. Newspeople are vultures with no common decency. Posted by: nerdygirl at December 11, 2021 10:20 PM (+lVUW) 83

76 Shuffling tv shows on Plex, watching an episode of Wonder Women, thing that just hit me was one of the reasons Lynda Carter was so beautiful was that she was tall, 5'10", so that made her long, coupled with her voluptuousness and gorgeous face, black hair blue eyes and the, ahem, smile.
So if she was 5'10", that means in a modest heel she was 6ft, if she wore a larger heel, she could be as tall as 6'2" Wow!!!! Even some of the Antifa twitter accounts are disturbed by the ten-year sentence - they seem to dimly realize that imposing draconian sentences for fairly minor politically-motivated violence may turn out badly for them at some point. A person who is probably terrified is Alissa Azar, an Antifa "journalist" who is charged with felony riot in an adjacent more conservative suburban county, along with bear spraying an unarmed woman. Emmie, me too (grilled veggies with a grilled tri-tip).
You just moved from somewhere to somewhere, so don't know about availability, though these days such things are widely available, especially compared to years ago. I like to grill some anaheim peppers to serve with the tri-tip. No seasoning - just grill them on the grates, blacken 'em up a bit. They cut with a fork and knife nicely, and their outer skin doesn't need to be peeled as with other peppers. The heat of the peppers varies quite a bit, no way to know in advance. Another great option, if you can find them - shishito peppers. Little green finger-sized ones. Grill them up, toss in a sauce of sesame oil, bit of soy sauce, dash of sugar or agave syrup, and black pepper, and (if preferred) some hot oil of some kind. Fantastic with the grilled beef. Reminded me I've got a nice big tri-tip in the fridge, need to trim it and put on the dry rub, maybe grill it tomorrow. Emmie they're grown in CA (and maybe Mexico) now so I've noticed them in big chain grocery stores (but this is SoCal). They're Japanese, as far as origins and familiarity, so availability in Asian stores will vary. The big Korean chains (H Mart, et al) have them, not sure if because half their stuff is Japanese (shhhh, don't mention this, sensitive), or as part of more broad Asian offerings.

ALH, I half it since I'm alone. Cube 4 pieces of bread. Put in greased square pan. Cook 6 oz of sausage to crumbly. Drain and put over bread. Cover with 1/2 cup grated cheese. (I use velveeta) Pour 1 1/4 C milk and two eggs beaten together over sausage, bread and cheese. Cover and put in fridge overnight. Pull out in morning and mix 1 can cream mushroom soup and 1/4 C (or more) of white wine to cover. (I'm out of wine, so beer it is) and bake at 350 for one hour. 1 hour is for a 13x9. Where it really, really gets dangerous is with pure O2 or elevated O2 concentration. Other oxidizers can make the potential worse. Imagine some dust cloud consisting of both fuel and oxidizer dust. Publius, you'll recall I had a ground fault problem with my oven. By process of elimination and conjecture, I determined the source to be the bake element. It is a covered element, and due to the too close lower casing and deflection due to heating, I suspected it was contacting the lower casing, overheating, and causing a slight current to ground at that location. Replaced it, to be sure, and ensured it was not subject to the same conditions. Thanks for your help and tips.

In high school we would ignite the fine sawdust that we scooped up off the floor of our shop class during lunch hour. Kersplosive.
Another dude had (for some reason) a tear gas shooter. He shot the small canister into the senior project house that was being built in the huge shop building. We all ran in and enjoyed the results. That same dude became a Catholic priest. they also began to lock up the shop building during the lunch hour. Imagine that. Man, I miss the 1980s. I am doing Christmas dinner. I would like to roast a turkey, but wife and sons are not big fans, so it will likely be a ham, or a nice beef roast. Hell, at least it's all real meat.
I kind of felt let down not cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the first time in a decade, but we spent a long weekend in Helena Montana, and all I had to do was maintain a nice buzz and hang out with my family. My advice is to look at the Pin Map on Pinside dot com...find some Barcades local to you and go flip a ton of games. There are some very good tabasco-clone sauces out of Japan. How did he test on the White Rage Meter (or has the military not yet fielded that particular testing hardware)? I haven't seen any info about large numbers yet. Not all that important any more. rhomboid. Primary in my case are Manny Lopez El Cubano cigars, in the Nicaraguan Puro Maduro blend, 5.5x52 ring. Torpedo rolled. Made about fifteen miles away from me in Texas City, TX, by a 5th generation Cuban cigar rolling family. The patriarch "Fred" escaped Castro's Cuba via 27" Cape Dory sloop in the late '60s, and established the cigar factory in the early '90s.
Otherwise, I'm a big fan of the Padron (also) Puro Nicaraguan torpedo maduro, same size, and then various of the Romeo Y Julieta line. Most disappointing "prestige" label? Arturo Fuente. Nibbling on R & J, nothing yet from Padron or Fuente. Just had one from La Aroma de Cuba yesterday, their basic blend, quite good. Slowly/methodically sampling offerings from many brands (Oliva, Patel, Joya, Alec Bradley, on and on). Already thinking I'm one who prefers the medium to full end, and maduros and cameroons are looking like favorites. Might get to FL for some kind of trip before too long, will surely find a way to include some cigar element. Posted by: rhomboid at December 12, 2021 02:10 AM (OTzUX) 537

On boards like this (and AoSHQ is very much like a late 80s / early 90s BBS), it's hard to convey conversational nuance in typography. So I've got a relatively thick skin, in this situation.

rhomboid. Please do sample the Rocky Patel "Edge" line in the Nicaraguan Maduro.
Sublime. Absolutely sublime. And do send me some shipping destination info. 5 pack sampler of El Cubano will be going your way shortly thereafter. Jim, thanks, that Patel stick added to the (quite long) "to try" list. Let's hold off on your generous offer on the El Cubanos, for now - I am literally maxxed out on humidor storage space, and only burn about 1 or at most 2 a week, so I've got inventory for a while.

I just learned a new phrase: "haute horlogerie", or fine watch-making. It is to watches as "haute couture" is to fashion. We once discussed Purdy firearms. Well, there are some Swiss watchmakers who are the Purdy of watches. The one that took the cake. One such name is Vacheron Constantin. They took the cake of haute horlogerie with this: https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Reference_57260 That's a $10M watch. 57 complications, including sidereal time and a Hebrew calendar. rhomboid. Good enough. I'll keep the sampler in storage. I get those for the asking from Manny himself, for such as you who merit the introduction.
Now, a reverse question. I enjoy a bourbon (duh!) with my cigars. What've you found to be your preferred spirits to accompany? And, which should I look to towards expanding my horizons? *feedback* I love Vodka, but it's meaningless with a cigar. Adds nothing, takes nothing away. Merely wets the palate while adding buzz to the blood. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at December 12, 2021 02:19 AM (QzJWU) 548

ROFL, Jim. You know, the phrase "more money than they got sense" comes to mind. But damn, I'm still impressed. I can get off some tangents, and I got off on this watch tangent after the shenigans of me and Miley and the "atomic" watch. The quartz revolution or "quartz crisis" as the Swiss watchmakers called it, knocked them off the top of horology. But, of the last decade, there has been a resurgence of interest in mechanical watches, and precision movements. The high end Swiss watchmakers have enjoyed a return to the top. This is not a mass market, of course, but a market for the more money than sense crowd. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at December 12, 2021 02:28 AM (Mzdiz) 554

Posted by: CaliGirl at December 12, 2021 02:27 AM (2DYau) I spent my entire adult life as a metal guitar player. I seriously have no bubblegum pop tunes that I love. On the other hand there have been certain songs that I liked for reasons I don't even know the answer to. Berlin's "metro" for example. Obviously the chick singing was eye candy, and she had a good voice, but I think its the way the guitar player blasts out the power chords during the chorus, which was kinda rare for new wave, but it gave power to the song. Didn't care for anything else they did though. Not sure about guilty pleasures. I'm either metal, classical, or RUSH. I would have to think about this. I was reading about the "pure mechanical" accuracy. Back in the day, before the quartz revolution, a Swiss standard for a "good watch" was at -4 to +6 sec/day accuracy. Why the asymmetry I don't know. Better movements could exceed that, maybe in the range of +/- 3 sec/day. (this for wrist watches, not larger mechanical clocks and such). Then came quartz, the simplest of which can beat that by an order of magnitude. Swiss outfit Zenith recently (2016ish) came up with a revolutionary new pure mechanical oscillator. The thing has a base frequency of 15 Hz, and the latest versions 18 Hz. This gives accuracy on the order of 0.3 sec per day. Price range for the first of these was $10Ks. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at December 12, 2021 02:51 AM (Mzdiz) 567
There is sort of a hybrid mechanical/quartz movement they've come up with. Rather than battery powered, it is mechanically powered, which turns a little generator that keeps a capacitor charged. No battery is needed, and you get quartz accuracy. The best of these will give you a few seconds per year accuracy. Are they really mechanical, or are they electronic? The purists argue. I have an old pocket watch from the 1920's that works like a charm, and Rolex from the 1980's. Thats about it for my watch experience, lol. I don't wear watches or jewlery. I got the Rolex to piss off the snobs, because seeing a long haired freak in a t shirt and jeans wearing one really burns their ass. lol

I have my grandfather's Howard gold railroad watch. I had a very interesting chat with the manager of the jewelry store I took it to to be cleaned and time. This gentleman, as it happened, collected Howard watches. He had never before seen the style of box that it came in, and he commented that, to collectors, the box might be more valuable to them than the watch.

If you're interested the world record for most expensive watch, sold at auction, belongs to Patek-Philippe, a Swiss haute horlogerie outfit. $31M in a 2019 auctioin. Patek-Philippe holds the record for the most price fetched at auction. The #3 price came in at $17.7M for the "Paul Newman Daytona" Rolex. But Patek-Philippe is apparently the grandest of them all. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at December 12, 2021 03:27 AM (Mzdiz) 572
I knew a dude that was pretty up on watches, and I asked him about the patek watches, and why they were so pricey. He said well, do you expect bill gates to wear a stinking rolex that any regular yuppie can afford? lol
Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at December 12, 2021 03:48 AM (VwHCD) 573
Patek-Philippe dominates the list of "most expensive watches". It's all P-P with a smattering of other names. Rolex is a piker by comparison. There is one notable entry by a lowly Bulova, but that is David Scott's Apollo 15 "moon watch". It was a backup. Bulova lost the "moon watch" competition to Omega. But Bulovas were used for backups. The US govt. claims ownership of just about all the moon watches, and they're not for sale. But somehow Scott's Bulova escaped that and was sold for $1.6M in 2015.
