Meet The Pet Morons

0842d1a8-ca52-415b-b01d-b45f7db11baa.jpg

These 2 have been here awhile back but we lost Bruno the Lab (age 9) early this year and lost Tibby the Tibetan Terrier (age 13) on Thanksgiving Day. They were both great dogs (but aren't they all?) We're still so sad about both.

Now to start thinking about rescuing another great dog.

Thanks for the pet thread. - No nic provided

So sorry your pals are gone. Looks like they had a great window seat. One of the best lines we've seen here at the Pet Thread, " They were both great dogs (but aren't they all?)". Good luck with your search.

Not mine but at a barn where I volunteer with the hippotherapy program. Two are used for therapy and are absolutely delightful ponies, which is saying a lot as ponies can be little stinkers. (Truly they all are delightful)
Griffin, Romeo, Bang Bang and Spongebob the donkey. - SS
Well an interesting crew. The spellcheck picked on hippotherapy. So here you Morons go, "Hippotherapy is a form of physical, occupational and speech therapy in which a therapist uses the characteristic movements of a horse to provide carefully graded motor and sensory input." Thanks for sharing today.

I'm a lurker who's contributed to the garden thread. I've also read the Pet Thread for years, but never felt ready to contribute until now, for some reason. Here we go:

I grew up with as many as three cats at one time, all Siamese or Siamese mix. At the first opportunity I had to care for cats, I adopted two through the local humane society, where I'd put the word out that I was looking for Siamese mix. I first saw them in a cage with about eight other orphan kittens. The seal point ("Precious", female) came up to the door to check me out. The little flame point ("Booboo", male) just sat in the middle of the cage and cried. I learned much later he was borndeaf, which only made him more dear to me. It also explained why his "sister" picked on him with near-impunity. When he grew older and heavier he got even, though at first he appeared to be the runt. I later learned they weren't from the same litter based on age when the vet neutered/spayed them. They both lived almost 20 yrs, and died within a year of each other from kidney failure. I'd never been so grief-stricken. It's been 15 years, and time's passing hasn't been that much help. - No nic provided

Your cats truly had a great human. It's amazing how big a hole their passing can leave in one's heart. Gorgeous kittehs. Thank you for stepping out into the Pet Thread.

This is Carlos the barn cat. I feed the feral cats that live in the shop on the ranch. I see them come out in the rear view mirror. One day this guy came running up to me and he rubbed against my leg and was purring. He has a tipped ear and is fixed. I started moving his food dish closer to my house day by day. After about six months he would run next to my Gator and follow me home. It took months but now he sleeps in the house. I let him out during the day but he won't stay outdoors by himself. He's no dummy. He is happiest spending time with us.

He had to have been dumped by someone because he is too friendly. He is now living his best life. His name should be suerte but he looks like a Carlos. - CaliGirl

Barn cat my butt. Either that he gets dressed up for work and has comfy seating in that barn. Wonderful photo, thanks for sharing the Holiday spirit with us.

This is Prissy.

Prissy is our resident canine congregant at church.

I'm not a fan of "take your dog everywhere" that is so prominent these days, but I have to be honest, she's a valued church member.

She comes every week to Sunday school and service with her elderly owner, waddles up to everyone at church until they say hello, at which point she walks off to find the next congregant. She finds the Pastor's voice soothing, I suspect, and when he prays or sermonizes, she dozes off and begins to snore. More than once, visiting parishioners have looked towards the back and thought someone was sleeping during service, only to later figure out it's just the dog.

She recently lost an eye, but keeps on trucking. - Bitter Clinger

Sounds like the old Bitter Clinger has a soft spot in his heart for old ladies and dogs. Doesn't it gang? Thanks for sharing this warm story today.

Pet Thread 2.jpg
(Spock and Mirror Spock)

Hello!

I'd like to submit two pics for the pet thread, please. My AoSHQ nic is "Pennsyltucky."

----------------

First pic is my old orange buddy, Syracuse. He was an old kitty and had a long, happy and spoiled life. He was my best friend, and saw me through a lot of upheaval in my life over the last 12 years. He passed in September and is sorely missed.

---------------

Second pic is my two current porch patrollers, Spock and Mirror Spock. They showed up here in summer of 2020. Both were so tiny that I was surprised they were away from their mother. My guess is that some cruel person abandoned them. It turned out well for them, though, as they are now both spoiled, fat and happy. Also, in only a year, they have caused the extinction of all chipmunks within about a 2-mile radius. With winter coming, they've mostly abandoned the porch and spend all their time on a big comfy cushion in front of the shop furnace.

---------------

Thanks and have a great day! - (Pennsyltucky)

We are sorry to hear of Syracuse's passing. Sounds like he was a faithful companion. But it does look like you're in good hands with the Siblings.

Thank you all for your submissions today. Great group of pets and their "owners". If you have something you wish to share, please contact us at petmorons at gmail dot com.

He managed to ambush on the way to bed last night from beneath the Christmas tree on the upstairs landing. Swear he's trying to kill me at the top of the stairs. I paid him back though, I just got through brushing his big Maine Coon ass for ten minutes while he purred himself to sleep.

33 So somebody I was going to visit this afternoon, I can't go see because they changed the rules again and they can only have one visitor a day (!!) and I wanted to allow her daughter who's from out of town to be able to visit. So I spoke with the dear woman on the phone, but I can't give Holy Communion over the phone! Aaaaargh!! Anyway, I thought I was going to be out but here I am instead, so I thought I'd share this devotional which is a combination devotional and nice animal story. For those that want to look up a reference it's 1st John 4:19-21 which is the passage about "We love because he first loved us" And for those that don't want the devotional bit you can just read the first paragraph below

Loving First:

Our hearts were broken. A few months earlier we had lost our beloved dog. One day my husband and I felt it was time to visit the local animal shelter and find a pet who might fill the hole in our hearts. And we found him! He was in a small cage with his head down and his tail between his legs. We thought, He needs us and we need him! Now only weeks after bringing him home, he runs to greet us, he holds his tail up high, and is the happiest dog.

41 33 devotional and dog story continued:

If the love my husband and I gave to that little dog can completely change him in such a wonderful way. how much more can the love of God change all of us? First John 4:19 says, "We love God because he first loved us." And because God loved us first, we are able to do things we couldn't possibly do otherwise. We can replace anger with forgiveness, can replace rejection with acceptance, and we can work towards peace in our families, neighborhoods and the world. We can love!

I think it's amazing that you can walk into a place like that and instantly ID and bond with a doggeh. We've had
that happen with every dog we've owned over the last 30 years.

Rescue doggehs are the best doggehs.

45 "Why is Luna so popular for dogs and people."

Ha ha. Our recent rescue is named Luna and as she's a 4-year-old so we weren't going to try to change it. I wouldn't have chosen it myself, but it's really a pleasant name and a distinct call name. It also lends itself to nicknames riffing on it: Luna Tuna Moona is a favorite. Also Lunacita bonita in Spanish (pretty little Luna).

Can't speak for why it's trendy (ick) though.

We waited several hours before we tried to brush/cut/shave it out. That was almost as traumatic as the initial incident. Looks kind of mangy now, but is in good spirits.

84 Okay, so my daughter does a video tribute to all dogs that have passed at Shep's. She just puts music to all the pictures that we have and puts it up on the Sheps site. We recently lost Jenny our sweet doxie. She was in so much pain and it was time to let her go. Daughter is stumped on a song. I know it's not a dog song but for some reason the song If by Bread came to my mind. Just think of a dog you loved so much when listening to it. IDK.. am I weird lol?!

85 Yay! Pet Thread! We've had pretty mild weather here the past week, and the cats, Ony and Charlie, have been outdoors a lot. Ony comes in at first hint of chilly evening - she likes to be warm. Charlie is a little hardier. Or too dumb to come in from the cold. One of those.

Short tale: Years ago, when a little yellow kitten walked up to us one day, he was immediately adopted. At that time, we had male cats Jack, Buck, and Spark, so I thought to call the new kitten a similar-sounding Chuck. I could never say why, but it didn't stick. He was always Charlie.

87 Prettygirl has what may be an "indolent ulcer" on her upper right lip near her nose. She's got a vet appointment for 12/20. I think it's from the skunk blast she took, full face, a few weeks ago. She's otherwise fine. In fact, this morning she protected the integrity of Dark Acre from an invader (a black cat whom I haven't seen in many months). She wasn't having none of it. I think her favorite song is Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More".

On other in-my-life feline news, Maceo, my nephmew, has taken to dipping his paw in his mama's glass of milk and then licking his paw. The video she's sent me is very cute. Of course, in doing so he "sours" the milk so she now saves some in the bottom for him. He's polydactyl so when he sticks his big ol' catcher's mitt in there, it's funny. They both lucked out in getting each other. And PG and I lucked out too. All animewls who end up with the right humans, and vice versa, are lucky.

89 Piggy, a red heeler who passed away a few years ago, loved the Christmas tree because we'd hang candy canes on it. She'd steal them and eat them. We'd find the discarded wrappers. She always patiently unwrapped the canes before eating them. That dog grew into her name. She was a first-class food thief. Still miss her and her antics.

I let him out in case he needs to go but he is usually just checking the yard. He did this last week and I wouldn't let him back in the bedroom.

He woke me up Friday night, then came over and started licking my arm. It's like he was apologizing for waking me up. And he really did need to go. It's taken six years for us to get to this point.

109 He was in a small cage with his head down and his tail between his legs. We thought, He needs us and we need him! Now only weeks after bringing him home, he runs to greet us, he holds his tail up high, and is the happiest dog.

I have to admit I too look for the ones that aren't perfect, or have problems in their history.

The fourth of our current four is about maybe four now, when we got him around two he was a mean little bastard, he'd been thrown out of a car and survived for a couple months and trusted nothing.

I bled a lot. But he's still here. And he's a complete sweetheart.

Okay, 18lb rat terrier, maybe not always possible with someone big enough to do you real harm.

My sister-in-law had a Pekingese that she grossly overfed, and he eventually lost the use of his hind legs. Poor dude was dragging himself around with his front paws. She left him with us, and little by little he decided he was a dog again. He lasted a couple more years, running around our yard.

I knew one exception to that rule. He was a Papillion and his owner raised him to be a dog instead of a purse accessory. Now our playgroup is greyhounds so you can imagine the reaction his presence got.

What did he do? Stood his ground and barked at all four of the dogs that converged on him. He was left alone after that.

Our four more or less get treated equally, when given the chance I'll walk the elder two a little further just because I want more time with them, and a fear that they need it.

They're healthy, they still play like young dogs, but I still worry.

I say this every week when I can: Best thing you can do for a dog is another compatible dog that'll keep them active. We are secondary.

135 >>I've seen single elephants. You don't understand how big they are until you see them in their world.

On the second trip we came upon a bull elephant with a few of his ladies. The game warden who was our guide told us that the make was in musth, kind of like being in heat, and they get very protective of their mates.

He chased our jeeps down the road swinging his trunk and tossing dirt in the air. A couple of German tourists in our jeep were very scared so naturally the warden kept slowing down and letting the elephant catch up. He was enormous.

139 The Seal Point and the born-deaf cat were both special, I'll bet. It's been 22 years since I lost Arizona the big red tabby Maine Coon mix, 15 and more since Marie-Antoinette passed -- and yet I miss them both every day along with those who went on ahead of me more recently.

For those following along: Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is in fairly good shape. He eats enthusiastically, uses the box, sits near us often, and purrs as we pet him. He's due for another vet visit next week. I don't know if his life is still happy without his mobility or his "brother" the big black Wolf cat, but he hasn't given up on life. It was pretty funny. This was one of those specially made jeeps type vehicles with like 6 benches for us tourists. The two Germans were in the last row so closest to the elephant.

Every time the elephant would close in on us they would start screaming "Must go, must go!". The game warden was laughing his ass off. So were the rest of us after a couple stop and goes.
