Daily Tech News 2 December 2021

Top Story

  • Qualcomm has announced the 8cx Gen 3, its new Arm-based chip for PCs. (Tom's Hardware)

Unlike the 8cx Gen 2, this actually seems to be a new chip - the Gen 2 was exactly the same silicon as the Gen 1, and both were, to put it mildly, bad.

The Gen 3 is supposedly 85% faster and built on a 5nm process, which is interesting because that means it's not the same device as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 announced yesterday. In fact, it is most likely last year's Snapdragon 888, which - if true - would further cement the fact that Qualcomm just doesn't give a shit about the PC market. PCs need more power, not less, and last year's chips just don't cut it.

The 888 and also the newer 8 Gen 1 are also limited to 16GB of RAM, which also doesn't cut it. That's enough for many users, but it's not enough when it's the maximum your chip can support.

This being a Qualcomm announcement, there is no specific information about anything. There never is.

Tech News

  • This shouldn't have happened. (Project Zero)

Mozilla's NSS library had a 2k buffer for digital signatures. What happened if you gave it more than that?

If you think the answer is memory corruption and a security nightmare, you win a kewpie doll. (Horrible things, kewpie dolls.)

The bug was there for 9 years before being discovered, despite extensive testing.

Stop writing code in a language best described as a portable PDP-8 assembler and start using something modern, well-designed, and with a solid team behind it like...

Okay, yeah, point taken. Keep using C, but treat any fixed-length buffers as radioactive waste.

  • Nvidia has confirmed the RTX 2060 will be available soon. (Tom's Hardware)

Yes, the 2060 launched more than three years ago. It will also be available soon.

  • Intel's entry-level Alder Lake i3-12100 is faster than AMD's 2019 entry-level Ryzen 3300X. (Tom's Hardware)

I mean, it would be kind of embarrassing if it weren't.

  • Making websites small. (Santurce Software)

Not every image needs to be 2 megapixels.

And not all text needs to be font-weight: 500.

Why is it that sites espousing a faster, lighter web are so often themselves fucking awful?

  • The hack is coming from inside the house. (Bleeping Computer)

Networking company Ubiquiti was the target of a hacking and extortion attempt earlier this year, with the hacker leaking damaging information to the media in an attempt to get the company to pay up.

It was one of their own staff.

Not only did he allegedly hack the company, steal confidential data, and attempt to extort them out of $2 million, the FBI claims he doubled down on this activity after they raided his home and seized evidence of his crimes thus far.

Ten out of ten for determination but minus several million for good thinking.

Of course, this is the FBI, so there's at least an even-money chance they did it all themselves.

  • Square is now Block. (BusinessWire)

Jack Dorsey's other company, which owns Cash App, TIDAL, and TBD54566975, has a new name.

    That's it. That's the story.

  • Qualcomm and Razer are partnering in a new Android-based handheld gaming device. (Hot Hardware)

The device is based on the all new Snapdragon G3x Gen 1, which, this being a Qualcomm announcement, we know absolutely nothing about.

661 Not such cheery news here, I'm afraid. Last week I began experiencing an excruciating headache. Finally got so bad that I drove myself to the VA ER. the right thing to do, it seems. They immediately ran a CAT scan. Turns out it was a brain bleed, a subdural hematoma. They immediately had me transported to the local large hospital where a craniotomy was performed. Now in a rehab facility. the last week hasn't been much fun...but then I don't remember much about it.

lots of opioids involved. don't feel well enough now to type any more, but wanted to check in.

28 Mornin', folk,

It's 58 F. here now, clear and as dry as it ever gets at night around this dump. Yesterday was a good day: I slept enough, my boss was out of the office, I left 15 minutes early and had a smooth commute, and I had a pleasant pipe smoke before dinner (the first in 3 days, which works well for me).

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat continues to maintain his new low-energy lifestyle. He's pacing around, albeit slowly, hoping I will feed him early. I want him hungry, though, so he eats all of his pain pill-charged breakfast.

30 So, my youngest was in a minor car accident yesterday. Thankfully, no one hurt, but the car will be totaled. Bummed about it, mostly because we've had that car forever. Was looking forward to it getting to 300,000 miles. (It was only 30K away!!
I know, I'm a nerd!)

Posted by: My Life is Insanity at December 02, 2021 03:56 AM (1R0vU)

Same with the line in Jimmy Buffett's "Changes in Latitudes": "Good times and riches and son-of-a-bitches, I've seen more than I can recall." Either stations didn't play the song at all, or they switched out the line, but I don't remember what they used that rhymed with "riches."

43 Yesterday would have been what I decided long ago was the birth date of my late big black cat Wolf. I took him in during early May 2011, and the vet estimated he was about 1.5 years old. So I counted back, settled on a date I could remember (Miss Linda's actual birthday), and decreed that Wolf had been born 12/1/09.

He didn't quite make it to 12. But he had a good happy life with me, I think.

I know the actual birth dates of Chekov and his late aunt Tatiana, since I have their papers. Strange; always before with my cats, I've had to estimate.

No car payment either! I just paid my '16 Buick off (2 years instead of 4), and got a .58 refund of my overpayment. Still waiting on the title. It gets about 22 mpg w/ 70% city driving on E0 gas, and I've seen 32 on the open road, amazing for such a big car with a V-6.

Insurance pricing here is horrifying possibly the highest in the entire country. Another reason I want to flee.

Too bad on the car MLiI. My SIL had inherited a 2003 Chrysler minivan a few years back. It only had 30,000 miles on it. Some dummy putting on her makeup while driving rear ended the thing at a stop sign. The insurance wanted to total it because it was mainly the back hatch that was ruined.
Her insurance agent pulled some strings to instead get it fixed because the car was is such nice condition to begin with.
She was able to drive it for another 4 years.

They immediately ran a CAT scan. Turns out it was a brain bleed, a subdural hematoma. They immediately had me transported to the local large hospital where a craniotomy was performed. 180 Why do websites that advocate for smaller download size usually suck? I think there's two answers. One is psychological: it is rare to find people who believe efficiency is its own reward and people who take the time to learn the mechanics of visual appeal. Second, because there's an 80/20 rule for visual appeal. It takes 80% of the code to generate the last 20% of visual appeal.

If you make the decision to jettison visual appeal completely, you can get by with 1% of the code.

I say this as a programmer who took a lot of convincing that the designers could actually see the differences they talked about.

181 Regarding "Making websites small": I have been having problems with my browser (MS Edge) consuming excessive memory. So, I opened up the browser task manager (Shift+Esc in browser) to see which sites were sucking up the memory.

The worst offender by far was AoSHQ. 92M for the base site PLUS 431M for a twitter subframe, 330M for a youtube subframe, and 35M for a rumble subframe. It was the by far the worst memory hog, by at least 6x the next worst site and 10x an average site.
