The bedpan at the ready in the corner is a testament to the awful ejecta the Trump maladministration will bring to all right thinking women. They are afraid of being grabbed by the Bad Orange Man. Outside we see the storm clouds gathering that will engulf the whole world while the evil one rules.

What the hell is that above the doorway?
Posted by: dantesed at November 30, 2021 09:52 AM (88xKn) ++++ When originally designing the Panopticon, Jeremy Bentham envisioned a series of mirrors to allow the overseer to keep tabs on everyone. This worked, but was expensive and inflexible. Cameras subsequently displaced the mirror arrangement, but the people living in the new Panopticon found them unsettling and those who stuck to traditional ways could not countenance such an intrusion. To overcome these concerns, cameras were placed into objects such as statuary and light fixtures. In this case, the aristocratic family has maintained a traditional estate environment and so statuary was chosen for camera placement. The statue in question here is a low-quality piece that was in storage. It was repurposed and placed outside of traditional sight lines to serve as cover for the surveillance equipment. It is a poor work that is also somewhat unsettling. The family rarely noticed its presence, and assumed that a housekeeper or one of the ladies of the house reinstalled it in the unobtrusive location. Well, this is a transition from yesterday's. Yes, it's a scene in a room with a woman at the center and there are images party obscured in the dark corners of the room. But this painting isn't making a political or social point, like Monday's.
I love the humor in this painting, best shown by the expression on the woman's face and posture and partly by the men's faces who seem to be oblivious to her 'dilemma'. The detail of the dog and objects in the room and the realistic look of the wood floor help establish the everyday aspect of the scene. The bright color and sheen of her clothes focusses the viewers attention on her in the middle of the image. It's a very entertaining and effective painting. "Doctors were familiar targets of parody in Steen's native Leiden, the home of a famous medical school. Borrowing from the comic stage, Steen identifies the old man as a quack by his peculiar clothing, while the nature of the young lady's malady is suggested by the Cupid over the door, and other intimations like the open bed. The picture dates about 1660.

Do not underestimate the entrepreneur just giving the market what it wants. There are billions of dollars out there looking for viable projects of this type. I occasionally point out that there is no reason why electrolysis of water to make hydrogen needs to be coupled with a renewable power source. That means that one or the other is going to be run inefficiently and even more uneconomically than it otherwise would be anyway. No one wants to hear it. For those sick who have killer sore throats, if the medicine is failing, I'd suggest raw honey in warm tea (so you don't kill the rawness in the honey) and sip all day. It will both coat the throat and has some anti-viral and anti-biotic qualities that may help on top of the "coat" effect. You can also spread raw honey on toast and have it with the tea. Manuka is the "best", but any raw honey will give helpful qualities...
I'd also suggest some outdoor sunshine sitting midday for the vitamin d and the non-constantly-germed air... Posted by: Nova local at November 30, 2021 10:34 AM (exHjb) 303

For me, if I have a sore throat/chest cold that isn't due to something like Strep, I have great results with saline nasal irrigation (it's unpleasant, but it works well for me) and a mild OTC steroid nasal spray like Flonase (not right after each other - I do irrigation then follow it up an hour later with nasal spray, and do that twice a day for persistent sore throats and chest colds). In May 2015 I bought two of the few remaining new-in-box plasma tv's. A 51-inch Samsung and a 50-inch LG. I'm very satisfied with the imaging of everything from old movies to live sports. The Samsung does everything except sports slightly better to my eye, though. I have no idea what I'd get today for a replacement if one failed.
I have a 2013 (last year they made them) Panasonic top-of-the-line plasma that I got for half price after they were discontinued. The 2021 LG OLEDs look as good and are pretty cheap ($1800 for the 60"), and high-dynamic range is a much better gimmick than 3D was. But my existing set continues to work so well 7 years later that I'm not in a hurry to change either. Posted by: Ian S. at November 30, 2021 10:37 AM (ZGrMX) 313

347 The sad part is, this is a clear case of what the founder's intended- laboratories of democracy. Citizens could look at what worked and what didn't and go from there.

358 The Vega had the misfortune of being in production during the time that the UAW was actively trying to sabotage GM.
==================== They just finished what the designer's started. IIRC, didn't some wild-ass-country boys drop big blocks in Vegas and tear up 1/4 mis? The Vega platform was a nice design, badly made but a nice design. The engine...well, just about every German manufacturer ended up using the same high-silicon die-cast aluminum block technology that GM and Reynolds cooked up for the Vega (Kolbenschmidt Alusil = Reynolds 390) but where GM effed up was that they took this open-deck aluminum block and put an IRON HEAD on it with a CHEAP STEEL SHIM head gasket and you ended up with radically different thermal expansion between the two. Add to this general American unfamiliarity with aluminum block engines and the coolant requirements thereof, and you had a pasty white mess of an engine. But, like I said, thirty years of German engines have used that same technology, with aluminum heads and good head gaskets. Posted by: JEM at November 30, 2021 10:53 AM (cZPWv) 379
