Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Coming Soon To An AoS Near You!I've been doing pop culture all week, and I thought I'd finish the week on the same theme. My first offical job as a teenager was in a movie theater. I started as a doorman and usher, then did concessions and box office, finally working as a manager. One summer I worked as an operator (non-union projectionist) when I was living in Ocean City, Md. Always in demand were old posters (one-sheets) from movies that had left the theater. I've still got a big box of them somewhere, I always thought they would make a dandy wallpaper for a game room or something, but I never had a house with such a dedicated room. In any event, the first question of the day is, what are your favorite movie posters? Doesn't matter how good the movie was, I'm just talking about really good posters themselves. Here's mine, I have it framed and hanging on the wall of my office: One other thing that was always fun was collecting reels of trailers, previews of coming attractions, called trailers because originally they were shown after the feature presentation. We would get trailers in every week to put at the beginning of films, but after the film was released and then gone from theaters, they would be thrown out or rolled up and tossed into a dusty cabinet in the projection booth, where they were forgotten. Some of my friends and I would gather these up and splice them together onto hour long reels, and sometimes at night after the theater was closed we would run private shows of these trailer reels. It was really a lot of fun. Question number two is: What trailers did you really enjoy? I offer you this: Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I was never much into movie posters. The only one that comes to mind is Jurassic Park.
I loved Something Wicked This Way Comes. My favorite scene was the "funeral" the carnival folk had through town, and Mr. Dark showing the kids faces as tattoos on his palms. As I recall, that was not in the book. Posted by: No One of Consequence at November 26, 2021 06:37 PM (CAJOC) Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at November 26, 2021 06:37 PM (/U27+) 14

I always liked Roy Schieder, he had that old school quality about him. But I don't recall many of his movies. Sure there was Jaws, of course that one. There was also The Seven Ups, though I am not sure I ever saw it. I do remember Blade Runner. It was woke before it's time but we loved it because we were not angry and it was cool. The last one was about some guy trying to blow up the Astrodome. I don't recall the name of that one either, but I remember Roy Scheider.

I'll be a poser and say Star Wars IV and Pulp Fiction are amazing movie posters.
Also, my copy of The Hunt For Red October (the novel) has a cover rendered in movie-poster style. The first page (this is a paperback) has still photos from the movie. We have Netflix and Amazon Prime for streaming shows and films, and I keep swearing to drop them because there is so little to watch that is not SJW crap, but I got tuned into a guy named something Van Dam.
He has a YouTube channel focusing on films that can be streamed, and I watched his latest about what's worth watching on both those platforms. Made a list of almost 30 films to try on each. Am still thinking it's all crap, after viewing a few on each, none of which I watched to the end. One was shot in Poland, another in Spain, and one thing that can be said for films done in those countries, is that the producers and casting directors don't feel compelled to flood the zone with POC actors. Both countries have allmost-all-white populations. Not that I am racist (or am I?) but everything done here feels a little otherworldly to me, not living anywhere near a big metro area. Rainbow casts full of every letter in the alphabet just doesn't match reality, IMHO. Posted by: Mr Gaga at November 26, 2021 06:45 PM (KiBMU) 41

When she takes over that organization and stops showing, will she travel as much? In January, it's Glen Rose, then Corpus Christi, then Westminster. Then it all stops. She's the judge of the 2022 BCOA National Specialty and doesn't want to be out in the four months before the show. The breeder of her principal rival has been on the warpath trying to influence the national board either to make her stop showing or strip her of the National assignment. Read the contract, HM says, doesn't say anything about that. And a contract trumps any standing rule that might be slipped by. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at November 26, 2021 07:16 PM (/U27+) 116

Among the many pertinent things I don't know due to giving up on it all a year ago - whether there's been any rigorous look at the medical cost of deferred screenings and treatment due to unscientific virus idiocy.
It's not a new area, all of the interval recommendations for screening tests are based on statistical analysis of benefit and risk/cost. And for many serious non-emergency conditions, there is lots of good data on the risk of deferring treatment. Waaay back at the start, spring 2020, of all places Ontario's health chief announced they'd already calculated the number of deaths likely due to deferred cardiac screenings/care. Surely they just used the existing statistical framework to generate that estimate. And on the other side of the scale, let's see any rigorous or persuasive analysis showing *any* benefits to *all* the "mitigation" policies. Any. All. There are control groups (Sweden, FL, SD, others). We already know there's been no interesting variation in results between the two groups. Let's see the medieval witch doctor/lysenkoist totalitarians attempt to show one. Posted by: rhomboid at November 26, 2021 07:19 PM (OTzUX) 124

He was in "52 Pick-Up" with Ann Margaret (who played his wife). He was also in "Blue Thunder", a police helicopter movie. Well, what we feared is happening.
In an age where the dominant themes of Catholic Church architecture are postmodern joylessness and paraboloid severity, there was no guarantee that the beauty of Notre-Dame wouldn't be replaced by something ungainly and grim and awful. That possibility, alas, appears to be coming to pass: Paris's fire-ravaged Notre-Dame cathedral risks resembling a "politically correct Disneyland" under controversial plans for its renovation seen by The Telegraph. Critics have warned that the world-famous cathedral will be turned into an "experimental showroom" under plans to dramatically change the inside of the medieval building. Under the proposed changes, confessional boxes, altars and classical sculptures will be replaced with modern art murals, and new sound and light effects to create "emotional spaces". There will be themed chapels on a "discovery trail", with an emphasis on Africa and Asia, while quotes from the Bible will be projected onto chapel walls in various languages, including Mandarin. The final chapel on the trail will have a strong environmental emphasis. - I guess we should be happy it doesn't include a mosque.
