Happy Fun Thread: Day After Thanksgiving Edition!

day after snoopy 1 112621 scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all, and welcome back to the Happy Fun Thread, Day After Thanksgiving edition! You can stop eating now! Well, right after you make the post-Thanksgiving sammich I invented.

Weasel's Turkey Sammich
2 slices squishy white bread with every possible nutrient removed
Some leftover turkey
Duke's mayo
S&P

Turkey, mayo and S&P go betwixt the bread slices. Prep time: < 2 minutes. Enjoy!

Welp, another Thanksgiving is in the can. Friends and family are thankfully gone, the kitchen is clean and the extra dining room table leafs are back in the hall closet. Did I forget anything? Is your refrigerator jammed full or did you send stuff home with any guests you may have had? Inquiring minds would like to know in the comments, below.

******

fallout shelter 1 112621.jpg

So yesterday we strolled down memory lane looking at the idyllic life in America in the 1950's. Looked pretty dang idyllic to Weasel, that's for sure. Dad went to work and mom took care of the house and the kids did went to school, washed their hands before supper and were never brought home in the back of a police car. Did I miss anything? Was there anything not included in this wonderfully wholesome view of suburban America from yesteryear?

CD Logo 1 112621 scaled.png

Well, there is one teensy-weensy little thing that was on people's minds at the time which wasn't covered in the material yesterday. Of course I'm referring to nuclear annihilation at the hands of the Rooskies, and the amount of time and attention devoted to Civil Defense education in the 1950s.

Let's take a look!

Duck and Cover!
Atomic Attack!
Warning Red!
Atomic Alert - Elementary School
Civil Defense in Schools
Food Supply After the Bomb
Survival Under Atomic Attack
Protect yourself From Fallout
Self-Preservation in an Atomic Attack
Flash of Darkness
Atomic War
Distant Early Warning

I wonder why these aren't still airing? Any ideas?

7 Okay, so I made yesterday's Thanksgiving meal.

Ribeyes and Halibut (we don't like Turkey)
Candied Yams
Roasted brussels sprouts with pearl onions
Broccoli with cheese sause
Twice baked potatoes
Asian cucumber salad
Crescent rolls
Two pies

Not bad but I'm a nervous wreck.

8 Hey Weasel, thanks for the thread.

I was talkin' 'bout old CD bomb shelters under colleges a few weeks ago I believe.

I think it fell out of the public's conscience more or less once US/USSR relations started to thaw in the 1970s. It didn't hurt that it was obvious by then that Lenin and Stalin's Great Socialist Experiment was a massive failure (or, obvious to anyone but liberals of the time).

14 Good evening everyone.

I certainly remember all the films and warnings in the early 60s but I don't recall any of us kids being overly worried about the Red Threat. We went about our business sled riding, playing smear the queer, red rover and hide-n-seek.

Certain winters we didn't eat the snow though due to our mothers' warnings of it being contaminated with fallout.

17 One of the elementary schools I went to in CA in the 60's had big steel louvers over the windows to keep us safe when the H Bomb dropped on Moffett Field 12 miles away.

There's still some air raid sirens hanging out around here - 90% of the people probably have no idea what those yellow towers are for.

It's invisible. You can make people close up their business and go broke. You can sell vaccines that make people get sick and maybe die. You can make them wear stupid masks or even four masks. 41 As for leftover turkey sandwich:

oatmeal bread - the pepperidge farm kind.
schmear of cranberry sauce on the bread, then layer with bacon, sliced tomato, leaf or butter lettuce, sliced turkey breast. Make sure to slice the sandwich on the diagonal, because that makes it taste better.

Or...

Toast white or wheat bread, place on a plate. Chop up some turkey and heat with leftover gravy. Pour turkey and gravy over toasted bread. Crumble bacon over the top and enjoy!

The gym in my grammar school was in the basement of the building. That's where we went for fallout drills.

The building was the proverbial brick house. I think we would have survived and be left to rebuild society like The Lord of the Flies. Probably wouldn't have worked out well.

56 An Atomic attack prior to intercontinental missiles was sort of "doable" (sure, we might get our hair mussed a little ...) in the thinking of the time.

Once hydrogen weapons came online and the means to deliver them accurately, then fallout shelters and the rest of it became a moot point.

Siblings and others who are older never really worried about global thermo-nukyler war, toe to toe with the russkis. I think the psychological "impact" of the whole thing varied quite a bit, and as usual much more has been made of it by the usual suspects than was actually the case.

Paris's fire-ravaged Notre-Dame cathedral risks resembling a "politically correct Disneyland" under controversial plans for its renovation seen by The Telegraph.

Critics have warned that the world-famous cathedral will be turned into an "experimental showroom" under plans to dramatically change the inside of the medieval building.
Under the proposed changes, confessional boxes, altars and classical sculptures will be replaced with modern art murals, and new sound and light effects to create "emotional spaces".

Notre Dame de Paris was erected to the glory of God and made beautiful to praise Him. If it can't be restored with that same aim, it would be better to tear it down.

It should be noted, however, that Notre Dame is actually the property of the French government; the Archdiocese of Paris only has use of it. Don't know who is calling the shots here.

Once hydrogen weapons came online and the means to deliver them accurately, then fallout shelters and the rest of it became a moot point.

160 As stupid as I thought it was when we'd have to crawl under our school desks for a "nuclear attack drill," I miss those days. Life was better when the enemy was still outside our borders.

Also, by 1st grade I was savvy enough to figure out that a small desk full of pencils and crayons was likely not going to shield me from a hydrogen bomb. I had it in my mind that if it ever happened for real, everyone else could crawl under the desks. I'd go to the window. I'd end up dead either way, but at least that way I'd get to see it, and I figured it would look pretty awesome.

161 Russian for "civil defense" is "grazh-DAHN-skaya oba-RONA". Soviets sarcastically shortened that to "grob" - which means coffin, conveniently.

T-giving related, so the rest of the story.

In the early 80s, one of the least persuasive parts of the otherwise respectable alarmist case about Soviet nukyler war-fighting capabilities/intentions involved highlighting their extensive urban evacuation plans. In a crisis, evacuate cities, leaving the "counter-value" (city-busting) dynamic rather limp on the US side - whose cities would presumably be non-evacuated.

Leaving the other weaknesses aside, it was pointed out that the greatest person/mile day on Earth was the Wednesday before T-giving in the US, in which an enormous % of the population traveled more than 50 miles from home. Without, of course, any "program" or any state involvement of any kind. So - the Soviets (primitive road network, limited rail) were actually in a vastly inferior position if it came to city evacuation to gain leverage.

Pilot climbed away, and seconds later, the shock wave from the atomic blast picked up the plane and carried us to 30,000 feet. Engine quit from lack of oxygen; pilot put plane in dive to get us down to where we could breathe again, got the engine restarted, and we landed several hundred miles away.

I have taken the Boy Scouts there with an old map of the facilities. You can still see almost all of the design features, although many are now massive pads of concrete.

Be ok for a tornado drill, which was that hunkering down against the wall of underground tunnel from the church to the nunnery house, Why that area wasn't used for the nuke drill too I will never understand. Tornado practice we did tunnel but the nuke drill it was just crawl under desk/neck protect. Of course tunnel wouldn't protect much in a blast but it was still odd.

OK.

---------------

My knee-jerk reaction is that they were sticking to the Never Imply Anything African is Bad narrative, but in actuality, the fact is that most of the media types are so pants-on-head retarded that they likely couldn't differentiate between Europe and Africa on a map. So, not devious. Just dumb.

284 Had an interesting talk with my neighbor. He & family have been the most stringent followers of all the gov't issued COVID protocols: the masking, the distancing, the avoidance of crowds, etc. His wife is an Episcopal pastor, which was their impetus, even conferring weekly with the County health folks, to keep abreast with all the latest. Gotta care for the flock. And that's all fine.

You know where this went: the whole family came down with COVID: hubby & wife felt all the carp and lethargy and loss of senses and loss of will that COVID brings to all and sundry. The kids did a little better, as kids are supposed to. He groused to me at some length for having had to endure all this stress and distress despite their most assiduous adherence to all the protocols.

I commiserated with him, and wished him well. I expressed my delight that their cases weren't worse, and shared his hope & joy that they will now have better resilience in the future.

I did not bother sharing with him that I have never given a happy carp about any of the COVID b.s.; nor that we (just four doors up the street from him) had a dozen neighbors join with our family for the festivities. Poor guy.
