Mount Saint Helens did not look like this; its shape was more rounded and dome-like. Instead, Bierstadt is sacrificing reality for the sake of beauty. A rounded dome would not give this painting its power, and it wouldn’t provide the needed contrast against the foreground that this jagged myth provides. In your mind’s eye, change the mountain to its more natural smooth dome-shape. Notice how the view and the experience changes. Bierstadt constructs the foreground as a soft, gentle slope covered with thick, green foliage. Deer lounge peacefully in the tall grass. Tall trees, just beginning to change color in the early autumn, frame the picture. They lift the landscape’s contours into the rich blue field of the sky. The colors in this section: blue, green, yellow/orange, are adjacent on the color wheel. They provide a gentle transition from cool hues to warm. This quiets the palette and allows for a peaceful viewing. The deer are puny and blend into the landscape. Animals have more energy than plants and they can easily dominate a composition. Here they are small and are a similar color to their surroundings. Instead of competing with the scene, they are part of it and are almost lost in it. Around the central vertical of the work, the tone shifts. The calm green on the left drops off suddenly, revealing the purple and white of the background. Notice there is no middle ground here. Bierstadt’s focus is the volcano and he composes the foreground in a way where it pulls back like a curtain to reveal the mountain. The foreground and trees fall down the edge and fade until they are cut off by the bottom frame. The foothills in the lower center and right lack any real definition. They are almost rendered like large swaths of color and shape that are dwarfed by the mountains. The patches lay flat and are stacked gently on top of each other, then, suddenly, the mountain explodes upward. The bright white cap attracts my eye and washes out the hills below. Where the majority of the lines and forms in the painting are flat, curvy, and horizontal, the mountain is angular and aggressively vertical. The ridges on the mountain’s slope, lit up by the early morning sun, lead my eye up to its peak. The sharp highlights and shadows give the mountain a craggy texture that also contrasts against the smooth landscape. The ridges don’t go straight up though. They rise in a slight right-hand spiral that, to me, resemble a girl’s twirling skirt. This creates an energy that conflicts with the tranquility of the rest of the work. Combined with the bright whitecap on the peak, this allows the volcano to dominate the entire composition. Even though the left foreground is brighter and has more detail and definition, my eye has a hard time leaving the mountain to take in the rest of the view. The mountain becomes powerful and majestic. This is the mood Bierstadt wanted the viewer to feel. For me, the memories of the 1980 explosion add to my feelings about this work. Bierstadt wanted a work where the viewer feels the energy radiate from the volcano, where the mountain spins and growls like a tiger behind the confining bars of the surrounding landscape. By adding the images of the 1980 event to this work, the energy in this work is not just felt in an abstract way. The energy suggested here is real, and it’s spectacular. Saint Helena was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, and played a significant role in re-establishing Christianity in the Holy Land. She is renowned for discovering the site of Calvary where she claimed to find the relics of the True Cross. She was canonized as a saint in both the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, and is still venerated today.

The modern name, Mount St. Helens, was given to the volcanic peak in 1792 by seafarer and explorer Captain George Vancouver of the British Royal Navy. He named it in honor of fellow countryman Alleyne Fitzherbert, who held the title 'Baron St. Helens'. Fitzherbert at the time served as the British Ambassador to Spain. Vancouver also named three other volcanoes in the Cascades -- Mount Baker, Mount Hood, and Mount Rainier -- for British naval officers.

A beautiful description and analysis of the painting. I like the way Bierstadt contrasts the foreground, which is large but on a more human scale, with the distant but clearly huge mountain areas. The color shift from earth tones to the cool blues and whites marks another aspect of the size differences and distances.
Having never been west of the Mississippi River I only know the area through paintings and photos. Bierstadt may romanticize his images but, damn!, they are exciting. Thanks for choosing this artist, Kris. It is always a pleasure to see his works. Have a great Thanksgiving. Posted by: JTB at November 24, 2021 09:49 AM (7EjX1) 111

110 A beautiful description and analysis of the painting.
This is a good example of Bierstadt's style--a beautiful view of a majestic, idealized, but not necessarily realistic, landscape. Mount Saint Helens did not look like this; its shape was more rounded and dome-like. Instead, Bierstadt is sacrificing reality for the sake of beauty.

This is like mandating people get a flu shot in 2021 which was designed for the flu spreading in 2018. This is basic logic. Yet, I have seen no one - not even someone like Tucker Carlson - call this out. What is annoying is that they push the vax "because the delta variant is spreading!" Um, all the vaxxes were designed only for the original variant of SARS-CoV-2. None of them were designed for any variants. This is like mandating people get a flu shot in 2021 which was designed for the flu spreading in 2018.
This is basic logic. Yet, I have seen no one - not even someone like Tucker Carlson - call this out. Also, I speculate that the Plandemic people know the vax doesn't work, want the spread to continue, so they can keep the Plandemic going. It is instinct but some explanation (such as you provide) and maybe practice can improve the viewer's appreciation. One of the huge benefits for me when I did photography as a serious hobby was learning to see the way patterns appear and how direction can suggest movement, among many other factors. It was all there to be seen before but wasn't always noticed. My attempts, poor as they are, at drawing have still improved my appreciation of what makes a painting or sketch appealing. I know this isn't popular, but I genuinely don't believe incarceration is the problem. We have jails. Recidivism is something like 80%. So jails aren't really stopping crime, they're containing it as much as they are able, since they are being overfilled. So jails aren't really stopping crime, they're containing it as much as they are able, since they are being overfilled. Our culture does not value citizenship or personal responsibility and I don't believe more jails are going to get us there. We've got to start valuing proper parenting and individual responsibility. Those are what is missing in our culture, not more jails.

The largest collection of Bierstadt paintings on the West coast is tucked away in a small little museum in Stockton, California -- the Haggin Museum. They have a dozen in their collection and they're all wonderful. This guy did not paint small; all of the paintings are at least the size of a table top, or greater, and they dominate any room they're placed in. He always has something small of human interest lurking somewhere in the foreground or mid-ground. The paintings in the Haggin Museum collection almost burned up in the Great San Francisco earthquake/fire of 1906. Thanks for posting up this one of Mount St. Helens -- I hadn't seen it before.

I know this isn't popular, but I genuinely don't believe incarceration is the problem. We have jails. Recidivism is something like 80%. So jails aren't really stopping crime, they're containing it as much as they are able, since they are being overfilled. Our culture does not value citizenship or personal responsibility and I don't believe more jails are going to get us there. We've got to start valuing proper parenting and individual responsibility. Really fast after whatever trial you may have had. Sometimes you were sold into slavery instead of immediately put to death. Or if you were in the upper class, you may have been exiled for life. Posted by: kallisto at November 24, 2021 10:45 AM Yep, which means that if I take a stand and reject this religious request workaround to keep my job, I'll have 30 days unpaid leave and then likely fired. Then I'll have to depend on some organization to take up my case and... what? Will I end up getting my job back? Who knows. In the meantime, how long will it take for them to take up my case and get the company to give my job back? Considering it took over a year for Rittenhouse to get justice, will I be waiting a year to get my job back? That's the reality millions are facing with this decision. Companies are banking on people not having the will - or the time and $ - to stand up to this. And they're right. 99% of people don't have the will, time or $ to do so. So the path of least resistance is to go through the religious exemption request process. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at November 24, 2021 11:09 AM (Do5/p) 497

If this was actually a public health concern, and the clot shots actually were a useful tool in reducing transmission, the FNM/government would have gone about all of this differently.
As others have pointed out, a shot so effective that it won't protect you if everyone doesn't get it, so safe that they have to specifically censor any data about the safety, and so powerful that literally everyone on the earth has to get it to protect anyone. Posted by: Clyde Shelton -------------- I don't know what the right answer is for you. Everyone is in a different situation. I'm guessing most companies don't really want to be doing this - their HR department probably does - but even the company CEO's would probably rather not have to deal with all this. My guess is many companies will not fall through with the terminations after receiving "new advice" and some will end up hiring people back when they realize they need people. I'd say this - if you are truly someone who has value - you will likely be fine whether at current company or a new one. Posted by: SH (Overturn Roe) at November 24, 2021 11:15 AM (sX1BW) 523

Biden appears to read instruction off teleprompter: 'End of quote'
By Joe Tacopino[ November 23, 2021 9:28pm Updated President Biden appeared to have a "Ron Burgundy" moment Tuesday while reading a speech about gas prices off a Teleprompter. Biden was compared to the fictional newscaster from the movie "Anchorman" when he recited the words "end of quote" after referencing a statement from the CEO of Walmart. "And, by the way, you may have heard the CEO of Walmart yesterday on the steps we've taken. He said, and I quote, 'The combination of private enterprise and government working together has been really successful,'" Biden said in the speech. "He went on to say, 'All the way through the supply chain, there's ... a lot of innovation.' Because of the actions we've taken, things have begun to change. End of quote." The president then moved on to the next sentence. Posted by: andycanuck (UHVv4) at November 24, 2021 11:18 AM (UHVv4) 525
