Sunday Overnight Open Thread – 11/21/2021

DISASTER MOVIES

When I was a kid in the 1970s, Disaster Movies were all the rage. And boy did they have some star-studded casts, often reviving past-their-prime stars of yore whose names still had a little cachet. For other big Hollywood names, their appearances in these disaster flicks turned out to be the end of the road for their movie stardom.

As I recall, Airport was actually a good movie (Moviegique might need to weigh in on this) but after that, the genre became cliched. We meet average people living a variety of average lives before being thrown together in a desperate bid for survival. Here are a few memorable posters, with more at the link.

MATING RITUALS

I’m a big fan of the male Bower Bird’s mating rituals. And if I’m being honest, I was a little nervous when first asking the future Mrs. Throckmorton out. She might tell you that my moves were not much different than those of the Bower Bird.

After building and decorating a “bower” to which he wants to bring a female, the male Bower Bird shows his game:

“First he expands his pupils alternately, an oddly mesmerizing display.”

“A spot of limbering up, accompanied by a weird and wheezy call from deep in his throat.”

“He waves his wing like a matador’s cape.”

“It’s all going so well, it’s time to get physical with a few head butts to her chest.”

This is very funny. Sadly, the Bower Bird we’re cheering for in this video has a competitor show up and spoil his plans in the end.

We can’t all have the game of a Bower Bird, but we’ve all done some crazy things to attract or be with a potential mate. Do y’all have any embarrassing stories you’re willing to share? Maybe a dad who really wanted you (or your boyfriend) gone from his house? A suave pickup move that ended in slapstick comedy?

SPEAKING OF BOWERS

“Will You Come To The Bower” is an Irish folk tune written by Thomas Moore in the early 1800s.Thanks to Irish immigrants, it had become a popular fiddle tune on the American frontier. It was to this tune that Sam Houston’s Texians marched into battle and whipped Santa Anna’s Mexican army at San Jacinto in 1836.

The lyrics are not typical of martial music, but you can’t argue with success and how the battle turned out.

Your bed shall be of roses, bespangled with dew.

There under the bower on soft roses you lie

THE ORIGINAL YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS

And still speaking of bowers…and Santa Anna…

The woman revered in Texas as The Yellow Rose of Texas was a young mixed-race woman, Emily West (aka Emily Morgan), who came from Connecticut to Texas with Col James Morgan.

From the 1842 journal of William Bollaert, an Englishman who traveled throughout Texas from 1842–1844:

“The Battle of San Jacinto was probably lost to the Mexicans, owing to the influence of a Mulatto Girl Emily [in the employ of] Colonel Morgan, who was closeted in the tent with General Santana, at the time the cry was made “the enemy! they come! they come!” and detained Santana so long, that order could not be restored readily again.”

She likely wasn’t alone with Santa Anna by choice. On the other hand, some Texans still claim that she patriotically put herself in that position to keep Santa Anna distracted while Sam Houston’s army made its charge.

Emily West was employed as a housekeeper at the New Washington Association’s hotel in Morgan’s Point, Texas and was there on April 16, 1836 when Colonel Almonte swept through the town in pursuit of Texas President David G. Burnet. Emily and a number of other servants and residents of Morgan’s Point were apprehended and forced to accompany Santa Anna’s army when it departed a few days later. Emily and her fellow captives were in the Mexican camp on April 21, 1836 during the Battle of San Jacinto.

Emily likely moved back to New York or Connecticut soon thereafter, but she is still the most beloved of all yellow roses.

The song “The Yellow Rose Of Texas” was spread far and wide in the 1860s and 1870s. It was sung by homesick troops during the Civil War and it went up the trail with cowboys in the 1870s.

Michael Martin Murphy recorded a very good version of the song on his “Cowboy Songs” album.

Are these things still around?

When I was a child, a lot of my friends’ families had these awesome combo bumper-pool / poker tables. I rarely saw a real pool table as a kid – just these contraptions. Childhood bumper-pool left me woefully unprepared for barroom billiards when I hit college.

The natural setting for this table was in either a rec room or a basement. In either case, the room likely had walls covered with fake-wood paneling.

And of course, it had a bean bag chair in it.

Tell me about your rec room. How did you break the Ping Pong table? (If there were boys involved, the Ping Pong table always ended up broken, and the ping pong balls had a very short life expectancy.)

James Garfield served as President for less than a year in 1881 before being shot down by a would-be civil servant who was bitter about not getting a consular appointment. I don’t know much about his brief Presidency, but he had some good words of wisdom.

Poverty is uncomfortable; but nine times out of ten the best thing that can happen to a young man is to be tossed overboard and compelled to sink or swim.

There are men and women who make the world better just by being the kind of people they are. They have the gift of kindness or courage or loyalty or integrity. THROCKMORTON’S FIRST LAW OF LIVE MUSIC: IF THERE’S AN UPRIGHT BASS IN THE BAND, IT’S PROBABLY GOING TO BE GOOD

I miss bands like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band that could rock with the rest of their generation, but also put on some boots, grab some acoustic instruments, and play some authentic hard-country music.

In this version of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” NGDB is joined by a cavalcade of stars ranging from John Hiatt to Vince Gill to Roy Acuff. And if all that doesn’t appeal to you, the amazing late 80’s hairdos are worth a look.

By the way, I’m often asked if the upright bass is my favorite instrument. It’s not. It’s just a signifier that good music is going to be played. My favorite instrument is probably the dobro (a slide guitar with a resonator that looks like a hubcab.) Jerry Douglas makes some beautiful sounds with his dobro in this video. His solo is at 2:33.

That was my thought too. If you're in a hurry to get away, why back in. Only thought now while typing this is, if they just got done with stealing something, they backed in in order to empty the contents of the SUV at the house? I dunno, none of this makes any sense.

17 I did see Airport recently because reasons, and it is kind of a cool time piece. I think the ...spoiler...bad guy was a polock living in a tenement just trying to get airinsurance money for his bastard family. You know, as Poles and slavs did back then.

So, I would recommend that one. I still want to see OJ in the Towering Inferno.

Grew up in a small townhouse with no basement or rec room. So first time I played ping pong was in college in the residence hall rec room. Oh the nights of procrastinating from studying we spent playing ping pong tournaments. It was glorious. We learned right quick to make sure to move all objects from the area of the ping pong table we didn't want broken.

That both parties are run by fools is a relatively new phenomenon that runs parallel with the business world's shift from highly motivated visionaries to headless-chicken managerial mediocrity and the disappearance of pop-culture role models.

They are prepped and ready to be shown, probably by FFA kids. The heifer in the top picture is absolutely gorgeous-good back line, capacity, she should ribbon. The steer in the picture below is pretty okay, but not as spectacular as the heifer.

Those cows were pampered and primped from the time they were born. At least the heifer gets to live. The steer will probably be auctioned off to a local meat company, with the proceeds going to a college fund for the kid who showed him.

85 Worst rec room incident involved a standard pool table. I'm a bit of a ball magnet (go ahead, laugh it up...) and get hit more often than a non-player should at sporting events. Anyway, group of teens playing pool and I was sitting on a stool at one end of the table with my cue standing up in front of me. Before I know what's happening someone hit the cue ball so hard it jumps off the table and hit my cue, right in front of my nose. Split the cue but luckily not my nose.

Our rec room in our daylight basement in Seattle had an old pin ball machine, a fireplace we never used, my brother's weird chemistry sets (with actual mercury), a slot car track and eventually a pool table we seldom used. Occasionally my dad had poker parties and I'd serve ritz crackers with onion soup dip and walk around wide eyed trying to figure out poker. The basement was a bit cold and damp and the house is long gone, but I'd love to be able to spend another evening there with my dad and mom.

CaliGirl, I think it's just the winter coat, just...floofed. The blowers for drying after baths plus brushing makes the hair look like that. They both look like Hereford crosses, although I have no idea what they crossed with - simmental or limousin maybe.

Not necessary. Everyone was worried about mass shopping mall shootings in the months and years after 9/11. It's not like we had to strictly reinforce security measures throughout the country. Heavy, ten-wheeled (not semi-trailer) dump trucks, loaded with sand. Fine barriers they make, and they're far more temporary and portable than flatbed-delivered "Jersey Barriers", at the intersections. Plus, three or four or five wide leading the parade and following as a rear guard.

You can make the parade vehicle-impregnable, all along the parade route. Marshalling and dispersal areas are separate problems though.

Persimmons are prone to biennial bearing. You can mitigate it to some degree with some extra labor in the good years.

I'd like to suggest Savannah but I can't. Prices on property are going up and up, utilities are going up, rent is higher than it should be and all that is coupled with terribly high crime for a small city, horrible schools and SCAD, the local overpriced art university is sucking away the tax base. Its a poorly managed city that has hard times ahead. I'm probably moving across the border into SC or north of the airport

Saw someone with long, flowing blond hair go into one of the bathrooms, so when I needed to go, I went to that one. There were these funny-looking open toilets in there that I had never seen before - I just figured that when girls got older and went to college, they had different facilities.

It wasn't until I went to leave and saw a girl combing her mustache in front of the mirror that I realized I might be in the wrong bathroom....

So glad that no one was taking a leak when I was in there; Mom and Dad would have had an interesting dinner conversation that night!

Stay safe dude!

In my experience, it is WAY easier to limb evergreens while they are still upright. Cut a path into the trunk from the thinnest side, then chainsaw the limbs from the bottom up - so every cut is unobstructed.

Leave a few limbs on in the intended direction of fall, if it is leaning towards the house, etc. It is always safer to fell with 90% of the weight off the tree.

Finally, get some good plastic wedges. They are cheap and will make your felling (in the proper direction) much easier and safer!

I planted 40 American Persimmons at my farm two years ago. They are growing great - except the ones that had their roots ravaged by pocket gophers.

Given previous flight and violent assault charges, I would have expected $25k, but I guess we can probably thank the criminal justice reform folks for the downward pressure on cash bail levels.

But why, if the "vaccines" work, do they require weekly testing? Seems like they require the testing, because they know the "vaccines" don't work, or expect them not to work. Otherwise, they wouldn't require testing, like they don't require testing after having gotten and recovered from COVID-19.

What annoys me about this whole COVID thing is the assumption that no one is naturally immune. I have never had the flu shot in my adult life and have never had the flu in my adult life. But every year they put out the commercials telling everyone "get the flu shot! keep you and your loved ones safe". Um, no, thank you, I don't need it. I know this because of the past 22 years of never having a shot and never getting the flu.

Yet, they treat this differently for COVID. They make it seem like even if COVID does not affect you, you can be a carrier and infect someone else. Therefore, everyone must get "vaccinated". I bet there are tens (hundreds?) of millions of Americans who are immune and won't be symptomatic and won't spread it.

They ripen when completely soft if they are the rounder, astringent type. That sounds like what you ate.
The flatter, non- astringent ones are the really good ones to eat. They are crisp and sweet even when they first start turning yellow. When fully ripe they are bright orange and become really sweet and softer.

La Quinta is also a suburb of Palm Springs/Palm Desert. Played on a beautiful course there. Though by 11AM there were 25-30 knot winds, which was interesting. Put the ball back in your stance, use a low iron, and go for a low weed-burner.

My brother made sand plum jelly from the bumper crop at our farm this year. It was awesome!

I know people in my area add serviceberry to their plantings for quail and pheasant habitat.

Is it easy to get it to maturity and yielding human-edible fruit?

2-3 years. Get multi-stemmed, not the single stemmed. The trunks don't get very big before starting to die back.
Our main (first) plant is 5. I got one pie and 6 half pints of jam from it last year. We did have to net it. No biggie, only 6 feet tall.
This year, everything froze.

I have indian-plum and thimbleberry, I was looking at serviceberry and purple elderberry, though for me it would be going out in the hills and cutting switches in the early Spring. I hadn't thought there was nursery stock!
I have been digging wild strawberry to plant next to the foundation, they grow like mad but the ones I got don't fruit.

I have my eye on some blackjack canes too, but I need to read up on where to plant them, the one I dug last year did not survive.

525 I've seen The Poseidon Adventure countless times. The reason is that we had a weak cable system out of Boston in the late 70s by the name of StarCase. (Our relatives outside of Philly already had HBO, and Daddy wanted a movie channel).

They'd show Movie A at 7 pm, Movie B at 9 pm, and Movie A again at 11 pm. It was hosted by the owner's wife, I think, and as the evening progressed, more buttons on her blouse would be undone.

Anyway, some of the other movies we watched over and over again are "Capricorn One," "Big Wednesday," "Silver Streak," and "Joseph Andrews" (with Ann Margret).

It is running fine. Carb is working as well as it is likely ever to. Got about 45 miles on it, now, and it is not blowing any appreciable amount of smoke. I am very pleased. And engine runs smooth, you would never guess it has mis-matched pistons in it.

Yes, Congress had been changing the official price of silver and gold for a while, and one of the drives in the 1880's and earlier was to devalue the cost of silver or get rid of gold as the monetary basis to drive inflation to allow farmers more ability to pay off old debts.

At the same time the policy of the big banksters was to compel Caribbean and Central American states to move from silver to gold to be in accord with US policy which also caused inflation and lots of local dissent.

General Sherman's brother was a Senator with a lot of pull and was involved with a lot of these monetary moves.

Tammy, I'm sorry that Joseph Rosenbaum had horrible things happen to him, he then committed those same horrible acts on other innocent people, it is hard for me to be sympathetic. Hollywood doesn't mind condemning sexual abuse when perpetrated by evil churchmen or sports doctors but have allowed the film industry to remain relatively unscathed. Harvey Weinstein was just about the women, not about the kids. Sorry for rambling I have a lot on my mind.

I hear you, I do. And agree totally. It seldom works that way, though, especially with little boys. I worked in childcare in my 20s, and had to report two cases. I won't poison your mind with details, but when a 4 year old boy comes in every day with blood soaked underwear and can't control his bowels, you don't easily forget it.
