Retriever and cat loving on each other.

Dogpile!

It's my turn to play with the iPad!

Clever dog assembles a makeshift stepstool to reach a treat.

Pretty interesting: The monkey has someone's eyeglasses at the top of his cage. People offer it what looks like a juicebox in exchange for the eyeglasses. The monkey takes the juicebox, and gives back the eyeglasses.

Maybe the two actions are unrelated but it looks like the monkey has engaged in, as the caption calls it, "Monkey Business."

Beautiful swan family having some family time.

Polite chipmunk.

I know a lot of you guys don't like cats, but this cat is a dynamite acrobat.

Inman: What game is being played here?

Porch pirate gets instant justice.

Last I heard, there's no hunting allowed there because of these facilities.

The deer have figured out when hunting season is and that McNeil Island is a safe place to be during that time. They swim a couple of miles out to the island and wait out deer season.

Yea, it was kind of a glancing shot. She was in the stall cleaning and the horse kicked out at a fly. He caught her as she was bent over with the rebound oh his hoof. Looked scary but she was more or less ok.

My mom was out trail riding with a friend one day and they stopped to talk and her friends horse kicked out, presumably at a fly and caught my mom in the leg. Compound fracture.

Very real. Lots of venture capital money from Silicon Valley types who legit thought it was gonna be the next big thing for people who don't have the time to cook or eat well 'cause they're too busy changing the world.

Very real digestive issues in early versions too. They made some ingredient swaps without warning people on subscription plans, and it turns out that "one size fits all" foodstuffs are more complicated than they first appear. Frisky's cinch strap wasn't as tight as it should have been, so my saddle began the slow slide to to starboard, with me in it. Thud. One of the stable guys told me later that Frisky liked to bloat before being saddled and, usually, the saddle guy would give the horse a knee to deflate the beast. But that didn't happen for me. 150 @111: "And Walter got there before me re: explosive intestines."

Soylent is a good example of unintended consequences, and the hubris of smart people trying to innovate in unfamiliar industries.

All meal replacement shakes tend to be strictly vegan these days, and it gets complicated when you're trying to mix and match fat and protein sources at scale from a bunch of suppliers who are basically new startups themselves. Even harder when you begin to maximize water solubility and mouth feel texture.

Turns out one of their fat source swaps wasn't universally digestible, and it passed through some people's guts without, umm, being digested.

I was just reading about how an electric car company includes two weeks (per year?) of car rental with the purchase in case you need to use an actual car to go places.

Pause to appreciate that. The people buying a new $50K-$150K car are acknowledging that they need to have an entire other internal combustion engine car built and waiting on them not to use, but just to sit there in case they need it.

Riding modern design/engineered bikes helps avoid all of these problems. Although they're not as awful as the AMF days. I had a friend who had put a brand new HD brake rotor on his front brake (because the rear was an awesome drum), he was out for a ride after putting new shiny's on, had barely gotten 2 miles from his house up Marin hills and the rotor turned into a potato chip, instantly seizing the front wheel, and throwing him from the bike. Luckily he was only going about 35 around the corner and didn't go down the cliff. The heat was just too much for the quality pot metal. And *that* was made in USA Kwality.

I remember tank slap especially on those old Kawasaki Z1000's, or as the nickname that stuck "Flexi-Flyer". Hey I know! Let's put a liter 4 cylinder engine in a cheap, tubular frame! It'll go like stink!

One thing none of us can really fathom is just how much all large cities stunk before the Industrial Age. There was a famous summer in 1858 in London called "The Big Stink" where hot weather and no rain for a few weeks created an unbearable stench that lasted for months, driving even the Royals away from their London residence.

Significant because it finally made London get serious about building a working sewer system, which cities around the world copied.

My step dad ran a dude ranch in WY for many years, and my place in the hills was surrounded by various stables raking in the lucre for storing little Ashly's horse until the bi-monthly visits.

I'll admit though, one neighbor had a horse that was a dog trapped in a horse's body. Incredibly smart, understood commands, would fetch, and was super affectionate. He'd climb in your lap if he could. Not one of the Arabians, just a good old mutt horse. IIRC he was a rescue of sorts from OR.

Why is it, do you think? You think it is drugs? Culture of being a counter culture rebel not tied down by petty morality?

Once you start realizing that a lot of writers put themselves (or the stuff in their heads) into their stories you realize that a lot of them do not hold up. Tolkien, certainly. CS Lewis, sure. Modern gets harder. Jordan (aside from some male female relationship dynamics.) Butcher (who is a good dude, but even he has had some sloppiness get into his stuff with his personal life going into the crapper.) Sanderson, who might just come off as weird, but a nice, normal kind of weirdness.

324 The thing most people can't grasp is how horse-centric culture was before the car. It was your only realistic long-distance choice for travel until the train, on land at least. And that meant the entire city or town had to be built around horses. Stables everywhere, feed, water troughs, hitching posts, kids cleaning horse poo out of the way for the people to walk by (and hope to get a tip). It was all built around horses.

Cars are a lot more self sufficient and need only a place to park and a few gas stations around. Horses needed constant care and trouble and housing. You can't park your horse out in the rain like a motorcycle.

So these go to my sister, who gives them to the church, which tries to sell them. From this, I may get information as to which colors or styles are preferred, to give away the better-liked ones.

The Model T - Internet - this, that, and the other - really did Democratize society.

When everybody can drive where they wish - access the entire encyclopedia of the world - and publish their opinions on a collective media ... Ben Franklin would have creamed his pants.

Some folks don't like that. They like to be able to say "you may speak". Some of those people live in New Jersey and enjoy doing so.

That's all it is. That's really, really all it is.

335 Why is it, do you think? You think it is drugs? Culture of being a counter culture rebel not tied down by petty morality?

Part of it is that authors are insane. I say this gently, and as an author, but we're just broken in a more or less benign way and do not see or interact with the world the way other people do. Its why we can write.

But also, if you're an author and successful you start to think like the director in Bullets over Broadway that you "create your own morality" because everyone loves the words and ideas you create. You're above their petty problems, and UNDERSTAND the world, you see.

Plus, usually authors in youth and in life are loners and do not associate very well with others, resulting in a lot of drinking, depression, and um, unusual ideas about sexuality and the other sex.

Yep, rode hard and put away wet. Once you're done with your travels, you don't get to close the garage door and go inside for a nice cool one. You get to clean, brush and feed the sucker, put a blanket on it if it's not in a warm stables, or you'll come out to a sick horse the next day.

Hardly any acorns, this year. Almost none.
Last year, tons of acorns. They were dropping like tiny bombs. Oak trees, turns out, only dump lots of acorns every couple of years, not every year. I did not know that.

Also, Oak Trees and Squirrels (and chickmunks) have quite the symbiotic relationship. Not only do squirrels live off the acorns, squirrels are directly responsible for new oak trees!

A big oak tree will dump thousands of acorns in a particular year. But the oak isn't stupid enough to want a thousand new baby oak trees growing within a 50 foot radius. That's where the squirrels come in. Squirrels collect acorns and hide them Everywhere. Squirrels have more hiding places for their Winter's food supply than you'd guess. So many hiding places for acorns, the Squirrels forget about many of them. Some of those tucked away seed-containing acorns, far away from the original oak tree, end up being new oak trees.

Having a designated person to go to in order to say all and get it off your chest, that's a good thing. Having them able to point you to Christ to remind you that price was paid, then to the scripture to show you how you can show your gratitude and try to be better next time, that's worth gold. I mean you can DO that in protestant churches, but there's no system or sense of anonymity or safety from gossip. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at November 16, 2021 08:43 PM (KZzsI)

The Church of Leftism will gladly accommodate you, thus:

You'll be strapped to a hard, straight-backed chair, placed under hot lights, and your "Priest" will encourage your Confession, by means of sap, truncheon, waterboarding and other delights.

Your penance will be to impregnate Greta upon the Altar of How Dare You, or die trying. Or, just die. They really won't care which, either.

Knows most of her competition are going to be white men, so setting the scene early that the frontrunner has to be her or else they're all racists that have been conspiring against her.

Resigning as VP absent some giant hate crime hoax outside the Naval Observatory is just going to mean the complete end of her political career.

Social interaction is pretty vital for being stable I think. I think it is one reason happily married couple are happy and why the unhappy ones usually note communication as a big problem.

And the internet does not count (or it does, as long as there is give and take and an actual discussion. Still face to face time is beneficial. Twitter is horrible. Pretty much the worst of the internet tendencies distilled down into a single app.

409 John 20:23 is supposed to be the basis for the sacrament of confession:

If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld."

Posted by: artemis at November 16, 2021 08:51 PM (AwPyG)

Interesting. I was raised Catholic but one of the reasons I am now Protestant is confession. I believe that only God can forgive sin. And I don't believe we need a human intermediary. We can not sin against each other - only against God. Confession of sin and forgiveness of sin is between the sinner and God.

As always, the original language of Scripture must be considered.
From the Wikipedia page for the verse you referenced... "Jesus' promise here is given to the whole group of disciples (the verb is plural), parallel to the promise in Matthew 16:19; Matthew 18:18. The disciples' power to forgive sins is linked to the gift of the Spirit in John 20:22, and not in human power. The verbs for forgiving and retaining are in the passive form, indicating that God is the one in action."

Very interesting!

They are. They eat their way under the roof tiles and into the attic. Done thousands in damage. By law they fall under fish and game. When the house was a rental I had to pay a guy to try to catch them - and they're too smart. If he does, it's like $150 because they have to release them.

Now? Pellet rifle. But they're skittish and fast. Slightest movement sends them scurrying. But I know they're trying to get back in, so they can breed and chew wiring. I removed all the trees they could use as a highway, but they can still run right up the stucco walls. Fuck I hate those things.

She could do a "Joe Biden is not the man I thought he was" kinda resignation after the mid-terms. If she assumes Biden's reelection is doomed at this point, then there's no real downside to trying something radical to preserve her own chance at the presidency.

The distraction of Biden trying to get a new VP confirmed through a Republican House and Senate would be a Aaron Sorkin level extinction event that would wipe almost all other political news -- anything short of a major war -- off the map.

It would be a cable news channel wet dream, and who knows, it might even make everyone forget she was once his VP.

Yep, they suck in urban/suburban environments. In Los Altos there's a park called Cuesta Park. People started feeding them because cute. They started getting huge because no natural enemies. But there's a great channel called Shawn Woods on YT, this guy has "mousetrap monday" where he tests various traps (not just mice) and there's some real beauties these days. Put bait in a location where you have a clean line-of-fire. I use roasted and salted peanuts in the shell. The tree rats are often still wary and keep looking around while munching. Sometimes they just grab the bait and run off to bury bit. But you will gain some advantage if you are patient.

483 Wonder if it's worth going back to read comments on the RINO thread. Dentist just asked, as he always does, for a political update and musings. He's normal, i.e. doesn't easily or instantly see beyond the superficial binary "two party" perspective, but he actually knew the outrage of the "infrastructure" bill.

Of course I didn't know about the McCarthy/Roy spat when talking to him, but he seemed to understand the country is trapped, as the GOP rarely constitutes much of an alternative (other than expedient defense or speed-bump).

Will be astonished if the GOP commits to any useful specific agenda over the next year. The desperation to avoid standing for anything in 2010* will probably look mild compared to how infuriated they will become if pressed to offer anything concrete.

* of course they wanted to repeal O-care, honest, and would never stop in that quest; well, not really

Posted by: hogmartin at November 16, 2021 09:08 PM (P4LRL)

Don't @ me, please....

I used to bring a mega-can of wd-40 with me to the field. Made my platoon "soak" their m-16 with it. Platoon sgt, and my super '7' maintenance sgt would vent their mentral cyclas at me. When we got back to the forward base, everyone would dump their weapon with men and go recover their radar/launcher/fuel tanker, etc. I and my platoon sgt woukd simply dump all the m16s into a 55 gallon of jp4 while the troops were busy.

As they cleared their major equipment, they would report to me for comsec, then hardware, then MOPP. Finaly they would pull their m16 out of the jp4, run the (chief warrant officer provided) air compresor over their m16 and move out to the arms rrom.

My platoon was consistently first on recovery of equipment at the end of a ftx.

Whoever comes next gets to either fix all of these things or be blamed for not fixing them. And Joe may be losing it mentally but he doesn't look like he'll be dying any time soon. And there is no way a Dem Congress will kick him out and no GOP Congress would would let her in.
Kamala has never had a job where she was expected to know anything about what she was doing. Now she has one and she's blindingly awful at it. She can't even give a speech without her own supporters cringing.

521 Riding modern design/engineered bikes helps avoid all of these problems.

Posted by: clutch cargo - processed in a facility that may contain lead at November 16, 2021 08:25 PM (wAnMi)

The only time I ever saw a rotor do that was if the caliper itself was seizing and the piston not returning. Stick a new rotor on, which is thicker, force the piston into a depth its not used to being, and poof, cooked rotor. Rotors just don't cook on their own. They are also either iron or stainless. You did say AMF though, so its anybody's guess. lol

How one could doubt that after 2020, or even 2008 and 2012, is mystifying.

Her current boss barely ever got further than she did in the primaries, in multiple tries. He was one of the least respected buffoons in the Beltway, and little known. He had no campaign, was obviously in cognitive decline (on top of always being one of the dumbest and most bumbling public figures of his generation) and he is now president.

Really...I've never hear that before, interesting.

Is it an age thing or seasonal?
Posted by: browndog Official Mascot of Team Gizzard at November 16, 2021 09:34 PM (BgMrQ)

We had black squirrels in the Bronx. Up in Northern Westchester, they're rarer. Often they'll have black bodies with a dark brown/red tail. Mostly grays though. Its not a seasonal phase thing, like deer fur. They're black all year round.

There is a town north of me, Marysville, Kansas that is the Black Squirrel City. An isolated community of all-black squirrels make their homes in the town. The squirrels are said to be the result of escapees from a traveling circus

The last time through, it was festooned with little black squirrel statues with creative logos and designs.

601 I am amazed by Ohikhobo's remedy. I Have had herpes for over 6 years with frequent outbreaks. Sometimes I average 2-3 times per month. Before one breakout could end, the next would begin. Nothing has helped me. I came online in search for a possible way to see how I can fight this virus so I found Ohikhobo here online after seeing a lot of testimonies of how he cured herpes and other diseases with natural herbs so I decided to give it a try I only took his remedy for two weeks and I was completely cured. I recommend Ohikhobo's remedy to anyone suffering from herpes that wants to be completely cured too.
