Meet The PetMorons

20210923_161048 (1).jpg

My beloved Jack Jones a dog found on the street (the vet said it looked like he had lived there for 4 months). He helped me through some tough times and is now around 14 years old. Unfortunately he has lumps appearing and he won't be around much longer. As I tell Jack he is the bestest dog ever and he will always be in my heart. - Mark

Hopefully Mr. Jones will be around a few more years and that the lumps are just fatty tissue. We are happy to hear that you have both been there for each other. Thanks for sharing.

Finally sending a pic, exactly one year after we picked up Sparky from the Rescue Shelter. On the way home he chose my wife as his goddess, by peeing on her lap. Won't leave her side. He's made progress, but is still very timid. I have to believe some guy mistreated him; now that I'm his friend, I'm the only male he's not afraid of. He is very protective of the green pillow in the first shot.

Half Chihuahua, half ? (they guessed Yorky). His head is smooth, but his coat looks as if he's wearing the pelt of his defeated enemy. He thinks he's a little badass.

When I'm here at the computer, he comes up and stands up like a meercat. Always gets him a treat, which always gets him spinning around in enthusiasm. That's a good sign. When we first got him, he seemed uninterested in food. That changed completely. Now, when we're at dinner, he puts his paws on the side of my wife's chair, begging. When he gets something, he scoots under the chair to do the same on the other side, as if he were a different dog.

As a bonus, here's a shot of our late lamented Sally, proving that Bassets CAN look happy. - Eeyore

Hello Eeyore, nothing quite like a pooch marking its territory. Sparky has quite the lifestyle it sounds like. Sally looks adorable. Sorry to hear that she is gone.

These two raga muffins enjoying a beautiful evening on the back patio are Dozer and Emma. Dozer is a pit-mix and Emma is a Bichon-mix: both fell into our laps and hearts for different reasons. The big guy is a goof and completely attached to me while little girl is an equal opportunity snuggler.

And a little late for Halloween, but here is one of our regulars at the horse rescue.

Including legs, it’s slightly larger than the size of my palm.

MW in Texas

P.S. It was pleasure meeting several of you at the TX MoMe. Special thanks to Tonypete and Mrs. Tonypete, Jak Sucio, AltonJackson + 1, NaCly Dog, Iris, Nurse Ratched, Beserker, Sponge (and several others) for making a lurker feel included. Many thanks to the 3 wonderful hosts as well.

Hello MW sounds like the Texas MoMe was a success. Thanks for the interesting photos you sent. I favor the doggehs over the spider.

Meet TC, short for TuxCat, or maybe Truncated Cat. He was a stray, and when I first met him he would alternate between crying for food and hissing to warn me not to get too close. Based on his behavior, I think he had been somebody's house cat who was either abandoned or got lost at a very young age. He had a terrible injury to his tail, so I had to capture him and take him to the vet. Part of his tail had to be amputated, so now he looks like a little doggy.
And he acts like one, too. Now he follows me around wherever I go, and can't get enough of being petted. I had a hard time getting a good picture of him because he he's always up around my ankles, so all you could see is his back and the top of his head. - Toad-O

TC is a handsome lad who definitely used one of his 9 lives to land in your world. Sounds like a dedicated and joyful pet. We appreciate you sharing with us.

Lady with shark (1).jpg

This is Lady. She's two years old and after seven races decided she preferred a less active lifestyle. After retiring, she went to a prison as part of a program where inmates get to train dogs. Ten weeks later, she graduated and arrived at our house. And she's cluing in to what toys are. - NR Pax

What an interesting life this sweetheart has lived. It really looks like she lucked out landing in your life. She certainly appears to be well taken care of!

Hi Mis Hum,

You have featured Quinn and Morgan before. My wife unearthed this picture while getting ready to prepare Christmas cards. We have a nice picture of the four of us ready to go for the front of the card, and she wanted to put this one on the back side. Quinn and Morgan are litter mates, and we call them the twins. When they wag their tails, it is synchronized. When they sleep, they are most often in the same position. If one of them scratches their ear, the other one will scratch the same ear. It's a bit spooky, almost like they are sharing the same brain.

Regards to the pet horde! - TN Deplorable

Hi TN Deplorable. Those dogs certainly seem deplorable as well. I think that's a really neat photo. I hope it makes that Christmas card. Thanks for your submission.

November kill (1).jpg

Hello Misc, it’s Otto Zilch again.
We don’t ever see much of our Pet Morons at work, so I thought I’d share some shots of Dusty, our AOS-certified badass, and some of his prey. Like a lot of house cats, he hunts out of instinct rather than for necessary food, so he often brings us mice that are partially, but not completely used up. When that happens, we take the mice over to a nearby field so the neighborhood owls and hawks can have an easy meal.

Maybe we can have a AOS Pet Thread just for the hunters/killers. --Otto Zilch

Well Dusty certainly looks like a bad ass from the photos you submitted. Nice to see he has retained some of his original characteristics. Thanks for displaying his prowess.

Howdy. Levon has been on the pet thread before but here he is doing his imitation of a pretzel. What a smart boy! He has always figured that this was his chair. Who says dogs are color blind? It's a perfect fit! Cheers Tom

A Setter taking life easy. How adorable!! Looks like Levon requires a larger chair. Just a hint, Black Friday sales are coming up.

Great pets and spider everyone. We love to see and hear about your pets. The Horde's pets are so spoiled.

The Pet Thread is taking next Saturday November 20th off. Don't worry we will be back the following week and if you have something to submit. We are at petmorons at gmail dot com.

Have a good week.

4 Sad news to pass along. My sisters kittuh, Casper, died last night. He was 16. He had various health issues. She heard what sounded like a cat throwing up. She went down stairs and he was lying on the floor, dead. She's guessing a heart attack. He died quick. Anyway, my sister is sad. I'm sad. He was a good kittuh. A very laid back, mellow kittuh.

One of my SiLs had a hunter/killer farm kitteh named Jorge. Last year, I went out to their place a bunch of times to house-sit at the farm while they were out at their cabin. Jorge was a hell of a hunter, I once saw him carrying a rabbit half his size into the garage.

Last time I saw him before he passed, we were all in the backyard having coffee when he nailed a mouse and started throwing it into the air. Repeatedly. SiL kept telling her hubby to get it away from Jorge because it creeped her out, but Jimmy just laughed "GOOD kitty!".

22 Elvis and I became famous this week for the wrong reason. I take Elvis to a park here in town 3 or 4 times a week for a walk. It's a beautiful place but in the offseason almost empty other than a few other dog walkers and some fishermen. We have a leash law but it's never been enforced at the park so we let the dogs run and play.

Karen complained. So there is a town council meeting scheduled to discuss whether we will start enforcing the law or just take it off the books.

Last Tuesday Elvis and I are walking around and we have the whole place to ourselves so naturally he's off the leash. Woman pulls up near me, gets out of her car and introduces herself as a photographer for the local paper and says her editor is doing a story on dogs and needs some pictures of of local dogs. Small town, lots of puff piece articles like this.

I get the paper on Thursday and there on the front page is a big picture of Elvis under the heading in red letters TO LEASH OR NOT TO LEASH? and then goes on to name both of us. We've been on the run from Johnny Law ever since.

28 Sadness yet i will not mourn.

Jack our diabetic kitter crossed to the other side 11 days after i entered the hospital. He was 14. Took insulin 2x a day for around 8 years. Vet says in his years of practice he had never seen a feline kept healthy with diabetese for that long. Jack, a fine specimen of grey American Shorthair, was just a strong cat. He would never run up the cat tree, but climb slow and deliberate like a lineman! Champion mouser. Pussy around a vaccuum or even a friggin broom. I could not picture him living anywhere but with us. If i slept in, he was at my bedside " mow, mow, chirrrp meow" (translation - ' hey, hooman, imma hungry and need my stingy thing in the back of my neck") and he would run and jump in his chair where he would wait for his insulin.

What a joy to have this big boy in our home for daughter unit and i. Movie nights meant wifey, popcorn and jack in my lap or on the sofa back on his blankey.

I celebtate a happee cat given a life who would most likely have been put down in any other household.

We had Amber a Rhodesian Ridgeback for 13 years and she was fine, still going on walks but she was on some medication for her hip arthritis but overall she was beating the odds for her age and breed. Woke up one morning and she had suffered a stroke overnight and was paralyzed in her back legs. Took her to the vet and the vet confirmed there was nothing she could do so we had to let her go. That was the only time she was scared to go to the vet.

It happens but she gave us 13 years of doggy happiness.

We had a diabetic cat who got diagnosed with it later in life. One good story that came out of it after he died. I was paying a visit to my local humane society and asked if they had need for needles and insulin. The lady's eyes went wide and she said "Thank you so much for coming in. We just had a lady call us and ask if we had any because she's on a fixed income and her cat was just diagnosed."

Those aren't tears must be an allergy...

Certain breeds of dogs are prone to tear ligaments in their legs and the resulting surgery called tplo is several thousand dollars. If one tears the other will eventually. We budget $5,000 for every dog we bring in the house just in case because we know once they're in we will never let them go willingly

40 Yaaay, pet thread. Smiles and sniffles as always.

I began smelling rodent in the house. We have some stacks of boxes, and I'm always concerned about some critter nesting in them.

I started nosing (literally) around to find the source of the smell. Then Milady spotted a tiny baby mouse. Poor thing didn't know how to hide, just cowered by some boxes. Milady easily caught it with one of our Bug Cups™. Two days later, another baby mouse, again huddled against a bookshelf, easily caught. Couldn't bear to bash their cute little noggins in, so we let them go, well away from the house. Probably to be snake food or something.

Plainly, they hadn't come inside from the cold, and the rodent smell persisted, even worsening. Finally, following my nose, I got down on hands and knees with a flashlight, and peered under a heavy wooden table's base. There was what must've been momma mouse, deceased. Took a while to clear the table, drag it aside, bag the corpse, and hit the carpet with deodorizer. No more stink.

Did one of the cats injure momma? Did she just die hiding there? We'll never know. A little sad. A lot yucky.

64 So, not a pet question, but to those of you who are wise in the ways of cats...I have two barn cats, and one of them has recently decided that it amuses him to crap on my front porch or immediaty in front of it instead of out away from the house as usual. This little guy has killed many a rat as noted by the tasty bits they leave (usually along with a tail) on the front porch. I certainly do not object to that, but this latest action feels...political in nature. I think I"m going to move their food dish to the place (right by my front porch) that they have begun to consider a rural litter box. Is this a good course of action?

81 We have no cats, but when there are field mice or prairie voles in the vicinity, we have a feral cat (different each time) that will be around the house. When they sun on our deck, my wife gets indignant, but I allow no harm to come to the cats.

You'll eat Meow Mix and like it! (Nice move getting in the chicken house by the way. Betcha won't do that again, huh? Them roosters is mean.)

How is it, by the way that a cat will eat the most disgusting bits of a rat, rabbit, squirrel, bird, whatever...leave parts to the sun and the flies for a bit, then go back to it...BUT, get the wrong type of Meow Mix and they act insulted and won't touch it for days?

Lovely poet morons, all.

I still have the granddog, and he's unhappy with his new diet (kid 2 started it here...how thoughtful), so I went to the store and bought the old diet. Voila! Happier granddog.

84 We had a diabetic cat who got diagnosed with it later in life.

93 Afternoon, all,

It's cool and sunny here, and is supposed to be actually chilly tomorrow morning. a tremendous relief and change after 7-8 months of sticky heat. Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is doing well, considering he still moves like he needs a Hurry-Cane and doesn't, or won't, jump up onto anything. He gets his topical pain med on the inner surface of his ear 2x a day, and his liquid anti-inflammatory down the hatch each evening. He has begun to let out a whining meow as we surround him for the latter treatment; he knows what's coming, but he doesn't try to lumber away and he doesn't hide. We consider we're lucky.

96 Nurse, Lucy the cat does not look happy to be wearing Christmas garb. The only cat I ever knew who did not just endure a costume but actually trotted around wearing it was the late smart black cat Marie-Antoinette, about whose exploits and adventures I've spoken before. 99 Last night Prettygirl came in the window (I leave a back window open for her to climb in) and it looked like she got a faceful of skunk anal gland juice. Freaked me out though she was acting like "been there/done that before". I got her cleaned up as best I could and there's only a little residual stink. As I mentioned last night, it smelled more like really oily, vinegary, peppery salad dressing (and, honestly, not all that bad) than it did skunk, though it did have a slice of that sharp skunk scent (not the green or hoppy skunk scent). She's out patrolling the wild backyards of Noe Valley so all's well that patrols well.

100 Cicero, I can't say that Arizona the big shaggy red tabby welcomed his insulin, but I had no trouble giving it to him. I'd prepare his dose, feed him, and as he gobbled his Rx food I'd kneel quickly, pinch up the loose skin between his shoulder blades, zing! and it was done. I'm sure it stung him. But the food was vastly more important.

He lived to be 16.5, the last 2 or so on the insulin, a quiet steady friend to the last.

101 I was supposed to be attending the National Red Setter Field Trial assoc, Nat Championships this weekend in Pinkneyville Illinois...but weather and "issues" with my 91yo father created first a delay, then finally a cancellation of us going. I was sooo looking forward to getting him there, up on a horse, behind the red dogs (perhaps for the last time).
Ah well...we'll try again for the Spring Trial.
We no longer campaign any dogs, but much of the field has our dogs names in their heritage, blood in their veins, and in particular..have my dogs "Tails"(Getting a high, straight tail when on point has been one of the toughest aspects of restoring the once great Field Irish Setter confirmation back from it's near extinction due to the popularity of Show Irish, and the 60year dominance of "Whyte Dogs" in the Field Trial Game) I have "meant" to post some pics, never got around to it....yet

The only cat I ever heard of who did that was the dilute tricolor stray, Lil Bit, whom I rescued and brought to my mother's house when our incumbent cat, Rusty, was about 9. At first he disliked the girl kitten, but in a few days they were good friends. When he passed away about 3 years later, my mother said that Lil Bit trotted all over the house, calling urgently, as if saying, "Where are you, buddy?"

They form attachments just as we do, I think.

111 We pet sit when the neighbors travel the last few years. Their dauchhund? lab cross Bella loves it cuz we feed free choice (a bit less so when she is her )

Well S and the kids left early Thursday morning, S is helping an old friend in Indiana recovering from covid and friends DH died. P will fly out next Friday and they'll all drive home after T-day. P put the dogs in the kennel for the day while he was at work on Thursday. I went over when dad was chatting with P and Bella followed me home, usually she goes back home after coaxing a treat out of me but she decided she is boarding with us starting now. She is always eager to go back home when she hears them come home after they've been gone, but I guess she mostly misses the kiddos. Their mini aussie is staying with P so I don't think he is feeling unloved.

We got our first Golden when I was a kid from a friend of my parents. He trained Golden's for field trials and Zeus was a retired champion. He had no use for pets, once they were retired they were just eaters to him.

To this day I've never seen a dog that was as obedient as that dog. I could walk him through a dog treat factory off leash and just tell him to heel and he wouldn't even look at the treats.

114 110: You probably know the answer. If the dog is barking while its people are at work you might possibly alert them and suggest dog would be less stressed with a snug dogloo to hang out in, or in a crate in the house. If they ignore it barking while they are home you know you'll get nowhere. LEOs consider a nuisance barker as very low on the priority list.
