CDC Head Rachel Walensky: Hey, I've Got a Great Idea. Now That the Covid Pandemic Is Diminishing, Why Don't We Wear Masks Forever to Reduce Infection By the Flu and Even the Common Cold?

Those of you who said "they're addicted to the pandemic" or "they will never let the pandemic end," collect your winnings.

Spoiler alert: Your winnings consist of a box of drug store masks.

Where is she getting that fantastical, farcical, medical misinformation claim that masks reduce the spread of covid by 80%? Even the N95 masks that actually work only reduce transmission by 60%. The drug store masks that almost everyone actually uses reduce transmission by 10-12%, tops.

Even leftwing Covid Karen AllahPundit has finally found a covid-panic hill he isn't willing to die on. Those numbers on mask effectiveness are from him (though of course they're widely available).

Compare her "80% reduction" claim to the claim I noted in the sidebar, highlighted by leftwing comic Jimmy Dore, by a doctor on NBC's Today show that covid has killed 146,000 children.

Actual figure? Less than 700.

You are allowed to lie about covid so long as the lie supports the officially sanctioned state propaganda.

Philip Klein of the corporate neoliberal blog National Review has had enough of the Forever Masking push.

And we do seem to be in the early stages of a Pivot to Forever Masking, as he calls it. In addition to Walensky's suggestion that we should mask to protect even against the common cold, he notes an ABC "News" article by a doctor urging the same Forever Masking line.

[The ABC News tweet] linked to a story from contributor Jay Bhatt, a doctor and public-health professor, arguing that people should resist returning to normal after receiving their vaccine booster. But of the five reasons he lists for continued masking and social distancing, two of them are "it's flu season" and "other viruses are out there."
One of the reasons why I have tried to avoid making the argument that we don't mask during flu season, so we should not be masking for COVID-19 given that vaccines are widely available, is precisely that I was always worried that at some point, somebody would respond, "Well, we should be masking during flu season!" It seems that moment has arrived.

An analogy that just occurred to me:

Viruses have what I'll call an unstable core. This term is not accurate but it works for the analogy. Their genetic code is not well-guarded against misreplication and error. They reproduce sloppily. They lose chunks of their genetic code in replication. They also just grab up any stray genetic code in their vicinity and incorporate it into their genetic core. That's what makes them so incredibly changeable -- so mutable. It's also the mechanism that allows them to suddenly become virulent and lethal.

It occurs to me that many, many people today lack a stable core. They do not have much by way of a core of fundamental being inside of them. The old pillars that provided strength and solidity to people -- church and family being two of them, friends you actually know in the real world being another, engagement with thought longer and deeper than scrolling through twitter Hot Takes -- are largely absent from many people.

The genetics of their psychology and personality are thus not well-guarded against mutation, and like a virus, they readily pick up pieces of Identity and stray strings of Meaning they find floating in the medium. They incorporate these new pieces of Identity and begin infecting others with it. Suddenly lost and lonely people are all Non-Binary Femme-Trending Anti-Racist Equity-Working Science-Believing Fat-Positivity Graysexuals who believe Black Lives Matter and that Hate Has No Home Here.

And many people have incorporated an exciting, potent new string of personal meaning, the "People of Pandemic" string, into their identity code.

Being a Person Who Is Very Very Concerned About the Pandemic is just as serious (or, just as trivial) a personal commitment and identity choice as being Non-Binary. It defines them. It determines who their kinship group are. It makes a tribe, it makes a culture. It cleaves them from one mass of humanity and connects them strongly with another mass.

It determines what they believe about a great many other things. You automatically know what all Pandemic People think about CRT, for example -- it simultaneously doesn't exist and is critical to teach children.

We live in viral times. People themselves have now become viral in most essential sense of the word. Having no fundamental spiritual DNA, they now mutate dozens of times a year, becoming more virulent with each mutation, and spread their diseased Codes to the other Viruses who look like people.

This pandemic won't end. It can't end. If it were to end, the Viral People whose primary code is being a Person of Covid would themselves end.

And even that is hugely optimistic, since it depends on perfect behavior and sanitation habits. Nobody does that, because it is a monumental pain in the ass. No one has good mask habits, and without those good habits efficacy collapses. Even if she weren't outright lying, it is a very sunny interpretation of potential. We've had no mandates here (suburban Baltimore) since July. There was a brief bit of high compliance when the news was shrieking about Delta all the time, but it's gone very low again now. They aren't made to be worn for hours. You should throw them out after couple hours. They do get some bacteria to stick in them on the way in and out and in the moist humid environment in a couple hours you are walking around with a Petri Dish over you nose and mouth. You can't wash them and if you use them again over the course of days or a week. You are massively increasing your risk of bacterial pneumonia.

That's probably only true if an infected person coughs or sneezes right in your face, while standing directly in front of you. The cloth/paper masks gape open on the sides, so you get no protection from even big droplets there. And the masks only stop the large droplets, not the microscopic ones, so even if you're wearing a mask and some infected person coughs or sneezes directly at you, you're still not really protected.

Then there's the fact that lots of people wear the masks on the bottom part of their faces, without covering their noses, which makes them even less likely to do any good.

The metric that determines an ICU's capacity is not actual number of rooms or number of beds. It is number of STAFF available to support patients.

You might have an ICU with 80 rooms, but only enough staff for 20 of those rooms to be functioning. Twenty people are in that ICU and so guess what - ICU IS 100% CAPACITY OMG OVERFLOWING CRISIS! Pay no attention to the other 60 doors with darkened rooms and nobody inside down the hall.

Now...if only there was a reason we suddenly had a shortage of staff...hm. Oh well. It boggles the mind. I can't think of a single reason.

If you have loved ones in medical facilities such as hospitals or nursing homes/rehab hospitals, you might want to check on them on a more regular basis. This is especially true if they cannot advocate for themselves due to medical conditions.

Two things - one, flu stats were blurred by everyone having to have covid - you cannot have both. Hospitals are still compensated more richly for covid. Until that disappears, flu will remain remarkably light.

Two, flu is spread by surface and close contact. Covid is almost entirely spread via aerosol, which is why prolonged exposure in tight quarters is a problem - and why stay in place orders were almost criminal. So the social distancing impact on flu spread actually had some basis in science based upon the way flu spreads.

Even granting there *might* be a benefit to wearing a mask, you also have to assess the risk/cost to wearing a mask and weigh that against the benefits. Especially considering we're talking about viruses/diseases (COVID, flu, common cold) which all have 99%+ recovery rates.

FYI - they actually STOPPED testing for flu. The converted most all of that type of testing to COVID. So of course the rates of flu were approaching zero. They stopped testing for it. They actually took it off the panel of tests available to order by a Major Medical Corporation. It was not available to ordered from EPIC.

I think aromatic molecules are a wee bit smaller than a virus. Also, give that the virus is transmitted by fluid transfer/droplets, you block the droplet. That being said, yeah, masks don't do much; If you glasses get fogged, a good portion of the air going in/out is bypassing the mask material.

And remember, those 80k numbers were with a widely available flu vaccine to the general public.

Ive said forever that Covid was like humanity getting 2-3 flus in on year. I'm not saying that means nothing, but we really over reacted to all of it.

I also still believe Covid deaths are vastly overstated. If someone is dead (like a car wreck) and they have Covid in their body, I genuinely think they are counting deaths like that. I have a real world anecdote where they did something similar.

I bet the actual death count is like half or less.

We have no mandates here, but the hospital allows only one visitor in the room and one visitor in the waiting room per patient. Everyone else has to stay outside. My aunt had a knee replacement a few weeks ago and I had planned to go because I thought I might be able to do something helpful. But then I realized that if I went, her closer relatives wouldn't be able to visit her. Sure enough, her son told me he had to go outside and wait in his car whenever someone came to visit.

Actually this is inaccurate. Covid is passed primarily via aerosol transmission. Not droplets. And some studies/experiments have suggested that masks actually improve the atomized discharges making the potential covid spread greater. This tracks well with actual spread data showing heavily masked locales actually had higher rates of covid spread than lightly masked populations.

CA is totally batshit insane. I actually think they like wearing masks. And kids after almost 2 years know nothing else. And I still keep walking into stores without the mask (required) and nobody has said shit yet. I can't tell you how many times a day I see people alone in their cars masked up - or even out on trails in the open space district.

Oddly when I was recently in Orange Co. almost nobody was wearing them - I'd assume San Diego is similar. But the Bay Area loves them cheap paper masks and disposable gloves.

I got the covid in early December 2019. My doctor said it was bronchitis and a sinus infection and gave me antibiotics twice neither of which worked. Took me over a month to get rid of it and I still have some breathing issues. He couldn't order a flu test because I didn't have all of the necessary symptoms and my insurance wouldn't authorize the test.

I'm not sure this is correct. CV19 is also spread (and maybe even mainly spread) by aerosols. They are not any larger than aromatics. But the second part of your comment I agree with and underscores my point: it almost doesn't matter whether CV19 can get through the mask material, because just slapping on a mask -- like 99% of people do -- will leave huge gaps for air to travel through unimpeded.

Actually this is inaccurate. Covid is passed primarily via aerosol transmission. Not droplets. And some studies/experiments have suggested that masks actually improve the atomized discharges making the potential covid spread greater. This tracks well with actual spread data showing heavily masked locales actually had higher rates of covid spread than lightly masked populations.

- mortality is worse than a transitory heart inflammation that goes away. Now the rate of each is probably what you mean. they are estimating 175-200 cases of heart inflammation per million shots. Not nothing. Its is probably not more concentrated in the young. Its is probably in everyone. However it is easier to pick up in the data in the young because they have no background disease to offer a confounding alternative explanation. If you are 50 and got the shot, you had as much a chance of getting inflammation - its just easier to attribute that event to underlying cardiac disease due to your age.

425 I can only offer my own limited anecdotal perspective on this, it's a hard no from me, and here's why. My kids go to our local Parochial Catholic School in NJ. They were out of school during the spring of 2020 same as everyone else. We had the good fortune of being able to reopen and stay open the entire 2020/2021 school year albeit with masks. We had a few hiccups here and there, and it was a weird school year especially for our kindergartener, but we were beyond blessed to have returned to a quasi normal. I remember specifically saying to my wife the first day of school... well, maybe with the masks we wont have to deal with the usual beginning of the year kindergarten crud/colds that the kids seem to get each September, with masks, sometimes face shields, and bathing in hand sanitizer what can go wrong? Like clockwork, all three of our girls were felled within 2 weeks of the return to school and they gave it to our son. No covid or flu, just regular colds. Back to school this year, still in masks, same damn thing, and we just had another round last week, with the added bonus of now needing to get covid tests to go back after illness. Still negative, just colds.

Remember, don't let them keep moving the goal posts, at least not in your mind. "Two weeks to flatten the curve" was precisely that: try to reduce spread for a brief period of time to smooth out the curve and keep hospitals from being overwhelmed. It was out in the environment and therefore would become a common thing. The goal wasn't to stop its spread or eliminate the virus - that is impossible and everyone knew it - it was to try to slow things down to let us respond.

Trying to eliminate COVID or get it to zero or whatever is insane and dishonest and obviously so.

Yup, definitely. This is much more of a consideration for the young, and the whole "known risk" versus "unknown risk" equation changes with age, sometimes dramatically. But young people don't usually get heart inflammation and they also don't usually get COVID (kids, anyway) and when they do get it, it is only very rarely severe. Those are lots of unknown risks, but if you get the shot then you are accepting known risks, immediately, every time. I think most young people (under 30, at least) probably *shouldn't* get the shot. If you're older, do your risk assessment.

The .30-40 is a perfectly cromulent deer-load in the Krag, or any other rifle so chambered. Much like the .30-30 Winchester, the deer won't know the difference between those or an aught-six, it's all the same .308 diameter bore, just different velocities at the outset.

Yeah, this is about Wisconsin's self defense law, which is a bit weird. Andrew Branca over at Legal Insurrection has been providing the analysis of their law, if you want to read more about it.

Historically, most jurisdictions have made some kind of exception for self-defense claims in circumstances where the person claiming self defense deliberately provoked the victim into the first blow. For example, if you call some guy's wife or mother a filthy diseased whore because you're trying to goad him into taking a swing at you so that you can then flatten him, you don't usually get to claim "hey, I was just defending myself. He hit me first."

But the argument that Rittenhouse "provoked" the attacks on him by Huber and Grossface is a long way from that kind of situation.

Frank DeHaas, in his bolt action rifle book, has the barrel specs of the bolt action rifles in his book including threads at the back which is an excellent reference on barrels for bolt action rifles.

532 412 Xipe, glad that you have a tight Krag--they especially like long heavy lead bullets about 220 gr. That also should lighten pressures. If you don't cast bullets, there are several sources online that do including the Lyman mould 220 gr. bullet for the Krag or Springfield 03.

Try Grafs and Sons for brass and even loaded ammo if you need it. Also the Krag Collector's Forum is another place to scrounge. You can convert British .303 brass but that is a pain.

Remington, before bankruptcy, used to do special runs of Krag hunting ammo with their 180 gr CoreLokt, during hunting season.

I don't hunt so my restoration of old military rifles including from bare receivers was a hobby that I pursued while laid up for about 10 years or so. Too expensive to do that now. Got back to the early black powder Mausers, Trapdoors, and some other foreign rifles before calling it quits.

To do so safely required doing quite a bit of research including old archival materials and spending a lot of time on Gunboards, etc. Had everything doublechecked with a family of gunsmiths familiar with old war rifles just for peace of mind.

By the way when I did that, I got an objection sustained by the judge against the prosecutor, who turned purple with embarrassment when it happened. The judge was delighted to sustain it. After the trial the bailiff came up to me and said "Wow. You got an objection sustained. Good job." I still lost, but I really learned a lot about the legal system.

541 535, .303 brass is ok if you are using the Lyman 220 gr cast, not so much if you are using jacketed bullets. There is a rare .22 LR Krag training rifle conversion made by no less than legendary Harry Pope for the US military.

Had a chance at one of his Krag .22 LR barrels for them once at auction but let it go as I had too many projects at the time.
