And lets you detect cognates with the Romance languages more easily. When I was in high school Spanish class, the class was puzzled when the teacher described the Spanish "solamente" ("only") as a cognate. That doesn't make sense unless you also know "sole" or "solely."

Knowing Latin-derived English words like "pensive" helped me enormously in first-year (and later) Spanish. "Pensar" = "to think." It always amazed me that my classmates in 2nd-year and later could not understand the idea of gerunds in Spanish, "-ando," "-endo," etc. I finally realized that most of them couldn't get the idea in English, either.

On the pendejo topic, knowing old English words helps with Welsh. For example, the Welsh word for writing is ysgrifennu, which sounds a lot like scrivener. And the word for rabbit is cwningen, which sounds like coney.

Because English is a Germanic language but routinely goes rifling through the pockets of every other language for useful words. It's why our language is so rich and so flexible and so expressive, but also why the grammar is full of exceptions and the linguistic roots of our vocabulary are all over the place. The people speaking it probably liked the Norse word better, so it stuck. Just like how we sometimes manufacture words. Like the Latinate "autumn" for this season, even though the native word in English in the German-derived "fall" but someone wanted a prettier word...

Just pulled that song up. Having a hard time isolating the drums. I recognized the drum loop for its use in Erik B and Rakim "Paid in Full" -- but that most certainly could have been a sample. I don't think it's a sample in "Come Undone" (a fantastic song, by the way) -- seems more like live drums on that track, but it is definitely a similar beat.

Yes, that word is an oddity. As many have noted, Welsh words often lack traditional vowels and makes extensive use of the semivowel "y" in many positions. Few, however, know the reason for this.

When Britain became an imperial power, the colonial outposts often dropped the surplus constructions, as vowels were no longer oversupplied.

I hope that movie is better than the novel. It was written by a French novelist, if I recall aright. Not only does it have no quotation marks, just the dashes (--) to introduce dialog, which gives me the creeps, but it also was very hard to follow as a narrative.

Seriously, that's hilarious - especially because the "Great Vowel Shift" is a real thing, when vowel pronunciations suddenly changed inside of a couple of generations throughout central and northern Europe (for example the word "boot" took up it's modern pronunciation, whereas before the Shift it was pronounced closer to how we would say "boat").

Not just because of the so-called "safety nets" but because far too many now realize that their management actually hates them. You don't work hard for someone who hates you. You'll work hard enough to not get fired, but you're not going to give it your all.
Productivity is falling and it is going to keep falling. Over the next 6-36 months, people are going to start raising alarms over falling production and productivity but not one of them will figure out why.

For comparison look for pictures of the USS San Francisco that also hit an underwater mountain. One sailor on that boat died as a result and the sub was nearly totaled. It took 4 years before it returned to service.

About five years ago, NASA Johnson Space Center tried to reduce Center operating costs by reducing janitorial services. We were told restrooms would be only once a week instead of daily, and the few remaining janitors would no longer empty office waste baskets - we'd have to empty them in the outdoor dumpsters ourselves.
That plan lasted about two months before it was dumped by the Center Director (pun intended) and she restored the former services. Good luck to Fed employees in their soon-unsanitary office buildings!

I think Scorsese was leaning into the cliches intentionally to heighten the stylistic form of the musical, contrasting it with the character work that was more grounded. It was an experiment, his first attempt at big budget filmmaking in his early career, and even he calls it a failure now.

Back in the late 80s I failed a room inspection in the Navy because I had a Confederate flag on my wall and the black command master chief was offended.
I confronted him. Asked if I'd ever shown him one iota less respect that his position deserved. He said no. Had he ever see, or heard of, me treating anyone with less than the respect they deserved. Again, no. I pointed out that the flag was displayed in my private area - insofar as such exists in the military - and he could always refrain from entering if his sensibilities were threatened. He changed the grade.
That was a better outcome than the female officer who got her panties in a bunch over a Carol Alt poster.

My morning commute ca. 6 am (my choice, so I can park, then loaf on the 'Net before my formal start time) is a breeze. It's 25 minutes with 10 miles of it being highway at 50-70 mph depending on conditions. The afternoon tends to be 35-45 minutes with speeds not much over 30. And there is only one sensible way to drive then; in the morning I have 2-3 possibilities.

Yeah, I like my doctor a lot, but she's 100% committed to following the official guidance on stupid stuff like vaccinating people who already have natural immunity.
It's disappointing.

You need to miss work or cancel a flight without penalty? No prob...here's the note. For a fee of course.

So it'll get harder, not easier to find a doctor willing and able to treat you before you are in hospital. There is no approved pre hospital treatment. Meaning the guidelines don't talk about prophylaxis or ambulatory care at all.

I kind of take that with a grain of salt but that is my wont these days. I did the same thing with the reports that the ERs were "filled with unvaccinated patients". Guess I've become a permanent skeptic. Having said that, if this turns out to be the case, I am confident that the public at large will never be truthfully informed of any correlation between the jab and subsequent complications.

The CDC does track the hospitalizations, hospital usage, etc. on their site. I'm sure the data isn't perfect (It's government!), but it really doesn't appear anywhere has approached the levels from late last fall, and numbers are in sharp decline for most of the US. Yea, it's one of those memes that a lot of Boston residents cultivated cause it sounds tough. There are some rougher sections of the city like Roxbury and Dorchester which are ironically not the whitest sections of the city and Southie were they hate everyone who isn't a leprechaun but where I lived was very mellow.
Our neighborhood bar was called the Bull and Finch. You might know it as the Cheers bar but it was a real place before it became a t-shirt shop and that was more like my neighborhood.

Most blacks can swap between the local accent and the "black" accent depending on what group they are among. I mean we all do this to a certain extent: we'll speak and behave slightly differently around our grandparents than around our peers for example. They just take it to a nearly schizophrenic level. Baldilocks and I have gone around about this in private chat a few times. She's grown up with it and sees it as perfectly normal. I view it as pernicious and bizarre.
Its like having white people who speak like everyone around them, then when in small groups together talking with an outrageous Irish accent and dancing jigs while playing the pipes, because its "their culture".

Concierge or boutique medical practice. It has been around a while. Need a locale that will be able to supply several hundred people willing to pay 3-5K subscription fees for yearly service. Sometime people try to get their insurance company to pay for some or part of it. The docs don't bill your insurance.
You pay a yearly subscription fee and then you get private doctor service. They come to your house for house calls if needed. So it maybe they charge 4 or 5 grand a year and have about 250 patients for one doctor. In a normal medical practice these days you have thousands and thousands and thousands of patients and you can't see them most of the time because you are overbooked. If you want to able to see your doctor at a moment's notice, literally call and he says, come on over I'll see you when you get here, that's how you do it.
They outlawed this in Canada for obvious reasons. It will be outlawed here eventually.
