Even if it looks staged, why are we going along with the idea that there's something wrong with a guy wearing the Confederate flag patch? I don't know what it's like where you all live, but in southern Indiana you don't have to drive far into the country before you start seeing the Trump flag + Confederate flag combo on porches and sheds. I always enjoy Tissot's paintings for the way he utilizes light and color and detail. Also, the way he captures realistic expressions on his models. The scene may not be of historic or philosophic importance but they are at least pleasant. This one catches my eye because of the contrasts: the bright figure of the woman against the darker background of plants and water, and the utilitarian wood and structure of the boat against the so feminine gown and throw.
Beyond the obvious artistic talent Tissot displays he illustrates a scene so well, prompting the viewer to seek more information about the image and characters. Posted by: JTB at November 05, 2021 09:11 AM (7EjX1) 194

Also that drum loop was in other hit songs in the late 80s/early 90s (the one Milli Vanilli song and Duran Duran's 90s comeback "Come Undone"). Thanks to the Internet we now know it's from "Ashley's Roachclip" by The Soul Searchers.
Posted by: Ian S. at November 05, 2021 09:08 AM (ZGrMX) Interesting. You're dropping knowledge on me -- thanks! Just pulled that song up. Having a hard time isolating the drums. I recognized the drum loop for its use in Erik B and Rakim "Paid in Full" -- but that most certainly could have been a sample. I don't think it's a sample in "Come Undone" (a fantastic song, by the way) -- seems more like live drums on that track, but it is definitely a similar beat. Because English is a Germanic language but routinely goes rifling through the pockets of every other language for useful words. It's why our language is so rich and so flexible and so expressive, but also why the grammar is full of exceptions and the linguistic roots of our vocabulary are all over the place. The people speaking it probably liked the Norse word better, so it stuck. Just like how we sometimes manufacture words. Like the Latinate "autumn" for this season, even though the native word in English in the German-derived "fall" but someone wanted a prettier word...

Too many vowels for Welsh.
Posted by: rickb223 at November 05, 2021 09:14 AM (OCTRt) ++++ Yes, that word is an oddity. As many have noted, Welsh words often lack traditional vowels and makes extensive use of the semivowel "y" in many positions. Few, however, know the reason for this. During the various wars for dominance in what is today the United Kingdom, the Welsh were rarely dominant but also rarely capitulated. This caused extensive, long-term conflict between the Welsh and the dominant English. In the lead-up to the Acts of Union in the 16th century, England thoroughly defeated Wales but feared a recurrence of Welsh opposition and non-cooperation. To help preclude this possibility, the English dispossessed Wales of a majority of its vowels following their military victories. As the number of vowels was eroded, Welsh communication was impaired. It also led to significant vowel inflation in English, with such constructions as "colour" becoming the norm in order for the language to absorb the vowel surplus effectively. When Britain became an imperial power, the colonial outposts often dropped the surplus constructions, as vowels were no longer oversupplied. You don't work hard for someone who hates you. You'll work hard enough to not get fired, but you're not going to give it your all. Productivity is falling and it is going to keep falling. Seawolf class SSN's: Seawolf, Jimmy Carter and Connecticut.
USS Jimmy Carter is a one off modification and considered a sub-class in its own right. Longer that the other two subs to accommodate Navy Seals and the various gear they have (mini-subs, ROVs, etc.) as well as underwater cable tapping gear and "stuff" for the various black ops the submarine is typically used for. All boats in this class were also designed so they can sit on the ocean floor and not get stuck. If true that the Connecticut hit a previously unmapped seamount it's amazing the damage isn't more severe. For comparison look for pictures of the USS San Francisco that also hit an underwater mountain. One sailor on that boat died as a result and the sub was nearly totaled. It took 4 years before it returned to service. Posted by: Martini Farmer at November 05, 2021 09:44 AM (BFigT) 403

"People now realize that they have more options and more flexibility and can work for firms in other states. Many people are taking advantage of that." Also discussed: the work-from-home schemes. In a recent survey, the number of people in the company who want to return to the office is essentially nil. The number of people who want to sometimes work in the office is low. The company would like to move to a hybrid scheme (something like three days in office, two days from home) but is tabling it because they have concluded that such a requirement would cause attrition to dramatically accelerate to the point of significant business risk.

I confronted him. Asked if I'd ever shown him one iota less respect that his position deserved. He said no. Had he ever see, or heard of, me treating anyone with less than the respect they deserved. Again, no. I pointed out that the flag was displayed in my private area - insofar as such exists in the military - and he could always refrain from entering if his sensibilities were threatened. He changed the grade. That was a better outcome than the female officer who got her panties in a bunch over a Carol Alt poster. Most blacks can swap between the local accent and the "black" accent depending on what group they are among. == Concierge or boutique medical practice. It has been around a while. Need a locale that will be able to supply several hundred people willing to pay 3-5K subscription fees for yearly service. Sometime people try to get their insurance company to pay for some or part of it. The docs don't bill your insurance. You pay a yearly subscription fee and then you get private doctor service. They come to your house for house calls if needed. So it maybe they charge 4 or 5 grand a year and have about 250 patients for one doctor. In a normal medical practice these days you have thousands and thousands and thousands of patients and you can't see them most of the time because you are overbooked. If you want to able to see your doctor at a moment's notice, literally call and he says, come on over I'll see you when you get here, that's how you do it. They outlawed this in Canada for obvious reasons. It will be outlawed here eventually. Posted by: the whole thing is designed to cause a system failure at November 05, 2021 10:28 AM (sGfAT) 621
