4 Inflation never really goes away unless you revalue and go for deflation.

How many countries 'don't' use fiat currency these days?

*looks it up on bing*

Answer from four years ago: There is no country which does not use fiat money. It is the natural evolution of currency. There is no need to back money by any single commodity. Fiat currency is backed by the whole economy of the issuing country, or every single product/service produced by it.

Back to me: Hmmm, well I guess we will see if this hamster is right.

9 how the hello does Microshaft link my passwords to the cloud when i don't, to the best of my knowledge, use "the could"?

"the cloud" just screams security risk at the top of it's lungs, and i can't imagine using it willingly.

can someone break me off some knowledge on this subject?

10 Up early after a busy night handing out candy to very polite kids and some older kids at the end. One older boy had a 'Lets go Braden' written with a marker on old sheet he was wearing, sort like a ghost. No masks in all on the kids who came to my door. There is hope yet...

11 Mornin', all,

Up with coffee, Dr. House on the TV (Olivia Wilde episode!), Chekov sprawled purring on the floor. It's a new month in a weird year.

I didn't get a chance to re-read one of my favorite spooky stories, John B.L. Goodwin's "The Cocoon." I read it first at age 11, and it gave me the creeps then and still does. Not that I completely understand it even as an adult -- but maybe that's part of the secret of a frightening story, that sometimes it presents something you don't understand and therefore fear.

12 the NPR article is, unsurprisingly, so much bullshit...

and today is the day that the Ports of Lost Angels and Long Bihn start fining shippers $100 for each container that has been there too long.

tomorrow the fine will be $200/ea, $300 on Wednesday, etc... and there are approximately 60,000 of them this applies to.

how long before the shipper abandons them as being uneconomical to claim? and yes, this was a Slow Joe Biden administration "idea"

21 Intel is shoveling out the terminology barn with this 12th generation chip. First they're masking that it's a 10 nanometer process by giving it some phony name that implies it's on a seven nanometer process. Plus they're getting rid of TDP, a measure that has been rather spiffy for heuristically comparing various chips from various vendors and replacing it with two measures, PBP (Processor Boost Power) and MTP (Maximum Turbo Power). The PBP doesn't measure anything boosted ,it's identical to the TDP measure while the MTP does more or less what it says which is how big your electrical bill is going to be. Then there's the alphabet zoo of chip types. We're basically going to need a lawyer to sort that out. And then there is the core I inflation factor. 9 is the old 7, and so on though I can cut them some slack here cuz it does seem somewhat reasonable. Other than that Intel it's copying ARM architecture. Overall looks like a pretty solid chip, I want to core i9 for the side of horseradish.

on purpose... the medical field is full of sensitive souls, and even the slightest bit of colorful language can send its inhabitants scurrying for the fainting couches.

true story: i was breaking in a new graveyard pharmacist, serving as the native guide for her first few weeks, who had *very* poor English language skills, and who was *very* much an observant Christian (as in over the top obvious, but sincere/innocent, not self-righteous "i'm so wonderful" hypocrite type).

i forget exactly what happened (early 90's) but i hit or tripped or otherwise inflicted great bodily pain upon myself in the pharmacy, which traditionally would have called for much Infantry language as i recovered.

out of respect, i limited myself to non-word verbal exclamations. for my restraint, i was confronted a day or two later by another Vietnamese pharmacist, who said the other one was offended by my language... i tried to explain that i had deliberately NOT used Infantry speak, out of respect to home girls faith, but i'm not sure i was believed.

28 The two Google 6s look to be fairly nice phones with the regular Pixel 6 at $599 USD the best bang for your money device. The most interesting aspect here is the proprietary Tensor chip. Apple M1s are basically a GPU with a CPU attached because they have too. The Tensor is a AI/ML chip with a CPU and a GPU attached because they had to. These custom SOCs I rather groundbreaking especially in a consumer level device and to my eye and experience are the future. Meanwhile Intel is shoveling out the terminology barn.

When our company went to using computers for everything back in maybe the late 90's, my buddy sent out an email and somehow sent it to everyone in corporate USA.
It was stopped early and he got a nastygram from IT. Before this had happened many people were using it to send the chain letter BS to get their free computers from Bill Gates, so IT was vigilant on the mass emails.

He's still afraid to send emails

44 It's a good camera and an okay phone. Sounds like the solution is Nova Launcher, which does for Android what Stardock does for Windows.
---
I am partial to the Microsoft Launcher mostly because Bill Gates owns my soul; that is a consequence of being an ex Microsoft person. I have used Nova and it's excellent. You can never fully get rid of Google from an Android phone, That's kind of like getting the Pope to stop being Catholic. However if you're not invested into all the Google applications you can get rid of them by deleting them or shutting them off and substituting them with applications of your choice and then drop a proper launcher on them machine and you have a pretty excellent box. I've been studying the images from the Pixel 6 phones and they are excellent. The wizards at Google do magic when it comes to photography. I own a Pixel 4a 5G and it has extremely limited cameras resources and it mostly goes toe to toe with the top of the line Apple boxes.

I tried Stardock cuz I was so fed up with the Windows 11 start menu. It works reasonably well but at the same time it's like 80% done. I found it to be a bigger irritant than the dumbassery that Microsoft implemented.

Here's The Hill on the Psaki pstory. It states that she tested daily "for four days" (from Wednesday to Saturday), all negative, and subsequently (Sunday) tested positive. That is not, I think, conclusive evidence that she regularly tests daily; these tests might or might not have been prompted by the positive test of a family member (day of that test not stated in the article; Thursday or previously).

63 The neutrino is something to hold in your head and recall every time a Uniparty asshole says they believe in science. If the quality of their utterances matches the real work described in this article you will know they do believe in science; if not everything passing over their tongue and teeth is propaganda.

Sterile neutrinos, all I could think of was, so they're mules. And the Garden of Forking Paths kept reminding me of a gay bar up on Capitol Hill in Seattle. Articles like this sometimes make me wish I could live for another thousand years or more to see how all this stuff plays out. But then the reality sets in that I'm not a very good scientific person and that I would waste all that time bitching about what Apple is doing with the notch on their computer screens.

Being less irreverent, if I read that article correctly the standard model could collapse over this stuff and that's a big deal.

65 Tests and vaxes . . . I'm okay at work with my religious exemption for the latter; employer says they are going to a random testing routine, so I won't have to dodge a weekly test email. And they've lifted the silly face muzzle order too. Of course we've been here before, only to have them panic (in fear of lawsuits, no doubt) and insist on the diapers again.

My boss still wears his when someone comes in his large office, and puts it on when I stick my head in his door -- 10 feet away from him. He requests that we all wear one when we meet with him in person. Jeez. Fortunately I can communicate with him mostly by email and phone.

68 The crew who shouted "defund the police" and "ACAB!" Are whining because the police wouldn't protect their bus from ultraviolently driving texans waving trump flags. Bonus points for the KKK reference

As a result of the harassment, which resulted in at least one traffic accident, the Biden campaign ended up canceling three events in the state, and the FBI opened an investigation into the incident. The suit claims the police department violated the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 because they were aware of "acts of violent political intimidation" that were taking place and yet did nothing to stop them. The suit requested compensatory and punitive damages, legal fees and a jury trial, citing "ongoing psychological and emotional injury" the plaintiffs still experience.

Posted by: Colin
---
I have commented before that you should really know how to restore a machine before you let Microsoft upgrade your box. I have been taught this lesson the hard way and rolling back doesn't help, it just leaves you in an indeterminate state. OS environments and all the stuff hung off of them are too complicated for any single mortal person to understand let alone an automated process.

Windows 11 is just fine if you prefer a screwed up start menu and a bunch of new icons sporting highly saturated colors. Other than that Windows 11 is basically Windows 10.5 so far. Plus you get another 5 years of service packs, by then your current Windows 10 machine will be out of date. The bigger issue here is a very natural fear of missing out kicks in every time a new OS rolls out. In a few years we may see some very specific feature differentiations that make windows 11 worth considering on older machines. Until then party on like it's 1995 all over again.

Posted by: LostInSpace at November 01, 2021 05:02 AM (ESLBo)

70 Which is a more realistic scenario in 2021:

A bunch of trump flag waving texans forcing a Biden bus off the road and killing everyone inside

Or

A bunch of Feds waving trump flags forcing a biden bus off the road and killing everyone inside.

108 Today in the RC calendar it is All Saints Day, in which the all Saints in all the calendar of Saints are celebrated. Some "high church" Protestant traditions celebrate it as well-such as Lutheran, Anglican, some Methodist. No, people don't pray to Saints. They ask for their prayers, just as you would ask for the prayers of friends here below. And yes, I have Jesus to intercede for me as the great high priest, but I sometimes ask for the intercession of the saints because I need all the help I can get . In the Protestant tradition in my church we celebrate the lives of people who followed Jesus and have gone to glory
as well as living followers of Jesus Christ. Here is a prayer for All Saints Day:

We bless your holy Name, O God, for all your servants, who having finished their course in faith now rest from their labor. Give us grace to follow the example of their steadfastness and faithfulness to your honor and glory, through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Even in "at will" states, it is questionable if they can change terms of employment for something like vaccine requirements. The gov't hasn't issued any regulations yet. Everyone under a gov't contract has a contract which does not list the clot shot. They don't have to do anything.

Through propaganda and fraud, the CCP under Xi Jinping transformed the snake oil of lockdowns into "science," the greatest crime of the 21st century to date. This is the story of how he did it, and why. 1/

Simultaneously, hundreds of thousands of clandestine social media posts - later flagged as state-sponsored - used identical terms to admire China's lockdowns and urge governments around the world to emulate them, denigrating those who failed to follow. 105/

The bots stormed governments including, but not limited to: Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Namibia, Kenya, France, Spain, Colombia, Brazil, Canada, Australia, India, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. 106/

However, McAwful does put his foot in his mouth quite a bit, and people are genuinely upset about the leftist School Boards. The only thing McAwful thinks are fine are school boards having complete control to spew their leftist garbage without any imput by parents.

I refer to these as stunning and unexpected come from behind victories. The modern-day prototype for election rigging was the 2004 Washington State Governor race. It included mail in ballots unmonitored drop boxes, third party post office mail drops, fake ballots, ballot harvesting, ballots found in the trunks of cars days after the polls closed, and strategically placed election officials who may or may not have corrupt intent in the most populous county in the state. The critical part of stopping counting is so a sense of what the actual vote counts are. Once those are determined the number of votes that need to be ginned up is a known quantity.

I wasn't in the "smart" math class where you get fast tracked to take algebra in the 8th grade. Until my seventh grade math teacher realized that I was helping some fellow classmates learn and understand the stuff we were doing. So I got to skip the "smart" 7th grade math stuff which is what the normal students learn in 8th grade and proceed on to algebra.

He went on a propaganda tour of nations, but it sounds like he did not have to do much convincing for all the "leaders" to believe his BS and enact the economy-crippling and population-controlling measures he recommended. But it was also a big effort to spread propaganda online as well. The thread has numerous articles and videos about the efforts to spread lies about the early days of the virus in Wuhan (i.e. lying about a woman who died in an accident and saying that she was shot by authorities trying to keep her from leaving her home or something).

225 I don't know why a woman would tell her neighbors she miscarried, as a male, I don't understand. Seems that's something I wouldn't go around the 'hood telling people.

Perhaps FenSpook can 'splain.

After being married *mumbling* years, I can tell you that most women share everything. I usually make a point to tell the wife, "I don't want people to know about X." Otherwise she'll be talking with all of her friends about it. I've watched the wife go on a two minute talk with the doctor when he had a multiple choice question. For guys, it is baffling.

226 222 Among 3958 participants enrolled in the v-safe pregnancy registry, 827 had a completed pregnancy, of which 115 (13.9%) were pregnancy losses and 712 (86.1%) were live births (mostly among participants vaccinated in the third trimester). Adverse neonatal outcomes included preterm birth (in 9.4%) and small size for gestational age (in 3.2%); no neonatal deaths were reported.

Modern day Thalidomide. Sure not every baby was born with flappers, so it was safe.

227 It isn't perfect. I ended up in the lowest reading group. The teachers eventually realized the mistake and I moved up. That being said, it's better than no tracking.
Posted by: WiNO at November 01, 2021 06:33 AM (EpDzw)

True. I just wonder how much tracking is really being done. And how well teachers are made to recognize that oh this kid is actually a couple levels above everyone else and is just kind of coasting because it isn't a challenge.

This is Monday morning math.

So, does that mean only about 20% got pregnant and carried to term? Or were all of those women pregnant and only 20% carried to term?

That's just the start of the questions.

I'm not understanding how "pregnancy losses" are a subset of a "completed pregnancy" count.

230 Innumeracy is just as much a problem if not more really, than illiteracy. Include myself in that, I'm OK with some numbers. My dad was old school, not really an accountant but he had taken statistics and had a sharp pencil.

He could take a look at an inscrutable phony balogna financial report and in just a few minutes find out where the jiggery-pokery was being deployed. It was amazing.

I know, the numbers didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but a nearly 15% rate of miscarriage seems awfully high. I wonder what the average was pre-vax?

I assume not all of the women in the study had come to term and the study was focusing on early negative outcomes.

Well, a miscarriage is an end of a pregnancy. It's complete, finished, over.

Here's a good study:

One study in Denmark, which included 1,221,546 pregnancies between 1978 and 1992, found the overall miscarriage rate was 13.5 percent.

235 This is the summary in the American Thinker article where I found the study: https://bit.ly/3n4SdTO

The mRNA vaccine is not safe in pregnant women. An article in the New England Medical Journal showed a rate of spontaneous abortion of 12% which is close to what is normally expected and the conclusion was the vaccine was safe to give. However, the study was skewed to include mostly women in the third trimester (84%). The remaining women in the 1st and 2nd trimesters had a 75% spontaneous abortion rate (96 out of 127). (See the footnotes to Table 4 in the article). The CDC also tried to hide this. Pregnant women should not take the experimental vaccine.

237 I love the morons who keep telling us a civil war is coming. Ignore the leftwing violence and intolerance. Ignore the stazi tactics. Ignore gun sales that have increased with every leftwing policy that eats away at our freedoms and liberties.

Nothing to see here. Ignore the antics of all government agencies. Ignore the fact that the Demorat Party would be at home in Venezuela, North Korea, China, or South Africa. Rather negiotiate with cancer, reason with it, compromise with it.

And you too can invest in a time share condo in Harlem.

I've seen conflicts after 30 years abroad. Yugoslavia, Siri Lanka, Uganda, Venezuela, Vietnam, Cambodia, Iraq, Syria, Libya.

When it arrives here I will not reason with cancer, nor compromise with it. And all those ACLU, BLM, Anita types, the Ford Foundation, MacArthur, Tides foundations and all those university boards and denizens of faculty lounges will understand how ordinary Americans feel about them. They will realize "equity" and "CRT." You sowed it, now reap it.

238 Worser, it took him a few paragraphs but now we get to the nut of the NPR article -

_Nonetheless, whether it's because they can't afford to, they don't want to or they're being greedy, instead of enticing workers with higher wages, many businesses are cutting back on the quality of their services in order to stay profitable._

That's right, Uncle Joe has nothing to do with it it's businesses fault because they don't want to pay higher wages.

239 "the cloud" just screams security risk at the top of it's lungs, and i can't imagine using it willingly.

can someone break me off some knowledge on this subject?
Posted by: redc1c4 *OTUS Zhou Bai-Din Cheated & we all know it at November 01, 2021 03:39 AM

"The cloud" is about stuff "as a service" which means that you pay for what you get and not for anything you could get, but which you don't, for whatever reason.

I pay for computers in the cloud because it's by far the easiest and cheapest way to set up an Internet server if you aren't going to get a ton of activity. People often pay for cloud storage so that multiple people can share files as long as they're all connected to the Internet. Applications as a service have been used for years, and not just because it's a much better deal for the vendor that a one-time payment for a perpetual license that was the model before.

Of course there are downsides. You mention security, but there's also the fact that when the Internet is down wherever you are, you can't get to your Office 360 documents or to the program that you used to create them. On the other hand, if you're setting up an Internet server...

Posted by: Cybersmythe at November 01, 2021 11:15 AM (dqP+A)

240 ...it's tough to see how you can do that without connecting it to the Internet, and it's the Internet connection that's the real risk. Anything you put on-line is subject to immediate attacks, most of which fail.

Anyway, even though the thread is probably dead and you're probably long-gone, I thought I'd give you an answer to your question. Microsoft pushes applications as a service because it means that they don't have to come up with a new Office every couple of years and convince people to switch to the new one. It makes economic sense for them to do this. Whether or not it makes sense for you to follow them is another matter. If you don't like it, you'll have to make some adjustments to the way you do computing.

this blog loads a lot faster then most. Can you recommend a good web hosting
provider at a honest price? Many thanks, I appreciate it!
