Dogs prove what humans have long known: there's no such thing as perfect sharing in a three-way.

Would you like to see my fairy pink armadillo?

Carcaral gives come-hither ear flicks.

Prancing big boy.

Human: Promise me you won't take my phone

Fox: yeah sure right lol

What is more fun than a swimming pool filled with dogs and tennis balls?

I know Halloween is over but...

Vampire cat!

Steve Inman raps as Michael Myers. Myers was 17 in the original Halloween, huh? Seemed older.

In Soviet Russia, donuts dunk you.

Soyfed punk is introduced to the asphalt.

Door doink.

Serious question: Is Kamala Harris always stoned? What else could explain the bizarre things she says?

The power of courage:

22 The farming video reminds me of Clarkson's Farm which is on Amazon Prime video. If you like Clarkson, you'll like this series. He decides to farm his farm which had been farmed by a tenant farmer.

Since we bought a farm this year, it seemed like a good watch. Main lesson learned is that if you want to be a farmer, it helps to start out as a millionaire. Of course, it is reality TV and a year edited down to 8 50-minute shows will highlight the dramatic, and some of it was clearly "scripted."

As we just bought a farm this year, it was a little scary...

30 Long story.
Used to live in an urban area when kids were young. We made a paper mache head from balloon, and put it on a scarecrow... one week before Halloween. Put it on the porch, propped up on straw bales.
Night of Halloween, I replaced it with me. Head, with holes cut out. Straw hanging out of cuffs, sleeves.
Seeing the reactions when I just lifted a finger were hilarious.

Just as with many AOSHQ commenters, apparently these people were "exhausted" by ridiculous media lies and distortions set against a backdrop of their own ignorance and bigotries.

Full employment, best economy since the 50s, reindustrialization, some small steps to restoring rule of law, and sane foreign policies - surely these were not the source of "exhaustion".

One family (a dad and his kids) came by, and I was holding the dogs while my wife was chatting with the dad. One of the kids, dressed as spiderman, came up, and was petting our bigger dog, and telling me his life story - about his dog, about how he has two moms, one of which lives in another state, and how he was going to see her at Easter, and over the summer. He was also going to visit his grandpa, too. Went on for a good ten minutes, just petting and talking.

People are always getting bit at work. It's more like a pinch but it can leave a blood blister. They nest by the ponds and the parents get aggressive. But I've walked by them a hundred times and we make eye contact, "hey goose", and on I go. I think people get skittish when they see a goose coming at them or they see the wings raise and they start acting weird. And when that happens the goose puts them on a list. "people to bite tomorrow" But they never bother me.

There's a video game where you play geese that drive people crazy. "Untitled Goose Game" It's fun for coop and it is ok for kids too.

- I believe that was one of Hall & Oates' earliest albums, from around 1975 or so, when the Bowie androgynous thing was still big but fading. I don't believe they ever had a single memorable hit from that album. Daryl passes as a chick far better than John, obviously...

- The official name of their band/group is "Daryl Hall John Oates," which I've always found interesting. If you look at all their albums and official merchandising, that's how they're always billed, never as "Hall & Oates."

The Glam movement was never very big here with folks like Marc Bolan, etc big stars in England but so so here. Bowie was probably the most successful in the US at it during that phase of his career.

True true. If I could lease it out for farming for the next 3-5 years that would actually be a good thing. Problem is all those dang trees. It would have to be cleared.

So right now my notional plan is subdividing a 40 acre parcel and marketing it as a "Prepper Acres" that provides 8 5 acre plots that are zoned agricultural and can be totally off-grid. Thinking shipping container homes with solar arrays.

207 171, qdpsteve, Muddy mixes on album were the issue for a lot of top bands in the late 60's and early 70's. That was also made worse as record companies pumped out cheap vinyl in the States that made many bands recordings sound worse than they actually were. Then there was the weird MCA debacle in the 70's where it was rumored that MCA was ripping off their own artists making off the book copies of albums and selling them without royalties. Think some of the acts sued over it.

Also there's overmodulation, that fart-like sound you used to get when you recorded a cassette tape and set the recording levels too high. You know what I'm talking about, right?

It's been re-mastered and re-re-mastered over and over again, it sounds like, to get rid of most of the overmodulation, but still sounds weird. I once read the reason it's like that is because the original tape was accidentally destroyed by the record company and they had to use a bad-quality circa 1964 acetate to make the mastering tape.

277 Qdpsteve,
A lot had to do with the studio equipment, the sound engineer, and how quickly songs were pushed out the door.

Glyn Johns was one famous sound engineer that made clean recording of the Stones, the Who, and other brit groups. Kit Lambert, on the other hand, when producing Tommy had crappy sound of a great album. Listen to a cut off of Who's Next engineered by Johns and then one off of Tommy and you can hear the difference. The Beatles greatly benefited from George Martin at the Helm. You can tell the difference between his Abbey Road and Phil Spector's putting lipstick on a pig of a recording in Let It Be.

Berry Gordy of MoTown was another recording genius of the era--with limited tracks, Gordy as producer achieved at least as good of depth of sound as Phil Spector in a lot of songs.

322 whig, that's what I think too.

I know that Glyn supposedly fell out with Eagles because he insisted they sound more country than rock, which I think pissed off Glenn Frey to no end. By the On The Border album, they wanted to be able to record pretty much anything they felt like.

It also didn't help that Glyn had a 'no drugs/alcohol' policy in the studio. Don Henley liked that, Glen didn't.

323 >>> 313 My understanding of the Covid testing situation is that if you have insurance, the insurance gets billed, and if you don't have insurance, a government fund gets billed. And the reason why it takes forever to get a test in many places right now is that they're spending more time on this billing paperwork than they are doing the actual tests.

Being thin was required/preferred in a lot of cases. Years ago, in the early 80's when I was just getting started I remember reading an add for a guitar player and one other position, bass maybe, and the add said, and I'll never forget it, "No flab, only long, lean, slender bodies need apply".

Posted by: Jane D'oh at November 01, 2021 08:19 PM (ptqGC)

401 If I recall correctly, part of why Pete was so depressed that he started drinking heavily again was that he kept trying to top himself as a writer and felt he was failing and that he wanted to do different music to extend himself as a writer but felt honor bound to bandmates and fans to keep on with the Who (and probably a bit scared to go solo as well). On the other hand, they needed him literally financially and as the creative spark. Regarding touring on Quadrophenia, simply the band could not recreate what was on the album unlike Who's Next as the technology of the day simply was not up to the job. Their more traditional set was so ingrained that even drunk etc. they could soldier on and put on a creditable performance.

That is probably why the other bandmates gave him leeway to produce Who by Numbers which aside from Slip Kid is very un Who like which one reviewer called it a suicide note.

406 When I played in bands (guitar/keys/bass depending on the band and year) I could not play wasted, period. A little bit of weed was OK. Drinking and serious drugs, no. A slight weed buzz tended to make me play better but it was a fine line. I never could fathom how people could go onstage after doing serious drugs or drinking.

Weed? Breakfast of champions. We would have our traditional prayer circle, only it wasn't a prayer circle, and we get torqued up and go conquer the world, and yeah, we played better. It was like we were on a mission.

I would suggest this to anyone since mine turned out so well. If we had anyone to roast a chivo or a pig we would have done that as well, your prospective daughter in law's folks might be into doing that.

492 Early Pink Floyd is interesting psychedelic and moody rock music and I have to be in a certain dark mood to listen to those albums. Have their first lp on an English pressing and Syd Barrett certainly gave off different vibes than on something like Dark Side of the Moon.

Kudos to Mason for bringing that music back to life. Thanks for the link.

495 Holy Mother. A "metal" cruise.

Posted by: artemis at November 01, 2021 08:49 PM (AwPyG)

You have no idea. 60 metal bands on a huge ass royal caribbean ship. No lime in the coconut shit on that boat. Its 4 days of mayhem, but not violent. There are no fights, everybody has a blast. I talked to the captain one night, and he said it was his favorite cruise, because nobody complains, no fights, nobody in the brig, and they break all booze records. One year I boarded the boat, big ass ship, and you know how much cargo they carry. I boarded at 12 noon, and it was scheduled to leave the dock at 5pm. They got delayed because they drank the fucking ship dry..DRY... In 5 hours, so they had to resupply before leaving the port. The bands also have nowhere to go, so they hang with everybody and party.

507 497, Jazz is interesting and I can do work while listening to it. Always energizes me but jazz bands and clubs are pretty far from where I live and I only occasionally get to see live bands when visiting other cities.

521 517, AOP, I agree. I pretty much like most music categories except opera singing or rap. It is also pretty fun to watch the BBC Proms from various performances over the years. 523 517, AOP, if you like boogie woogie, then you would also probably like Professor Longhair. Try the Rock and Roll Gumbo album with guitarist Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown sitting in. They even do the old Huey Smith Rockin Pneumonia cover along with Stagger Lee.

524 Victor Borge is someone who tried to "make it big" in classical music, had tepid success.
Then, he went in to comedy, and he was a real stitch.
Especially when working with the soprano, coloratura.

My life long friend, my brother, really, was on the cusp of making it. Dave Mustaine even approached him t a guitar shop. He also was acquainted with Mark Slaughter (was a fag, were his words). Before a series of strokes he was an outstanding guitarist. He lost the ability to know where his progressions went. Ended up selling all of his guitars. (I have two of them)

But he also suffered from hard-core stage fright. Sucks. Because he really was an incredible metal guitarist.
