The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

America has fought many wars, and many hundreds of thousands of our fellow Americans have fallen in countless battles across the centuries and across the world. But Veterans Day honors all who served, and it is an unalloyed good thing. We often focus on the men who saw combat, and their stories are an amazing glimpse into the iron core of America. Yet far more served honorably without being sent into harm's way.

It sounds trite, yet those men who saw combat could not have done what they did without the men who supplied them with ammunition and food and medical care and boots and kept the oceans of paperwork that controlled it all flowing smoothly or repaired their weapons or tanks or trucks or planes.

The honor is in the service. Millions of of citizens decided for many reasons that they would do their duty. Many were drafted, many enlisted. But they put their lives on hold and invested their time and energy and yes, sometimes blood for the good of the country.

I am less interested in their motivation (GI Bill, vocational training, boredom...who cares!) than the fact that they served in defense of the greatest country on earth. And for that they deserve recognition and a simple and honest: thank you.

17 "I am less interested in their motivation than the fact that they served "

This is a very good point. We've gotten so far down in the weeds on psychological belly button diving that we have lost the script. Motives should not be the the first qualifier on whether a good is an objective good. Objective good is good by definition and I think if we pushed back against motives (and I'm just as guilty as anyone on this, it's endemic to our society) and just thanked people for doing good, it would likely help heal the divide.

47 My father was only about 8 when we entered WWI, and 32 at the time of Pearl Harbor. He never served, though I have no idea why; perhaps he was a bookkeeper in some essential war industry? There are big gaps in what I know about my father. My mother was an RN, and while she always admired the Navy, she never considered enlisting. (She'd become a US citizen not long before the war, I think.) I'm sure that both of them (they didn't meet until after 1945) did their parts as patriotic citizens.

When I got to the 3rd ID repo depot in Germany in 75 they pulled me aside and said they looked at my record and saw that I took typing in HS. Sent me to a clerk school in Bremerhaven and got assigned to an Artillery Battery as a clerk. They later consolidated all of us into Battalion HQ S1.

81 This past weekend, my doorbell rang. The person who rang the bell was a member of the local high school J-ROTC, fundraising for a group that spruces up veteran grave sites in the nearby military cemetery for Christmas. He was a nice kid. For the first time, I felt sympathy for someone setting his eyes on a military career and aspiring to attend a military academy.

That is now. Before, the warmaking plans and rationales of an elite class notwithstanding, there was honor. Depending on what those elites and their purged, corrupt and complicit military do in the future, Veterans Day may become complicated. Today, however, I do not think it is.

82 I had a high draft number when I became eligible in 1971, and so missed that little party in Vietnam. Good thing, as I was probably chowder-headed enough that I'd have gotten killed in the jungle or caused some other soldiers to get killed. If it had looked like I would be drafted, I figured I'd sign up for the Navy. My idea was that they'd give me an IQ test, say, "Here's officer material!," and send me to OCS. My dream would have been to get into submarines, the closest thing we have today to starships.

Since I knew no one who'd been in the service or was at that point, I had no one to ask about the feasibility of my notions. Rumors abounded that the Air Force had the easiest boot camp, for instance. I have no idea if that was true then.

God bless you and I pray that you find some peace.

I saw a documentary awhile ago that researched the last deaths of WW1. It was heartbreaking... some officers were ordering charges on enemy lines until the last minutes. In one account the germans were waving the allies back... trying to get them to stop.

90 My Grandfather was on the battlefield on Nov. 11, 1918.

Some men say that they heard the Voice of God that day, in the silence, when the shooting stopped.

He died well before I was born, a man I never knew.
So many, many brave men gave their last full measure for this country.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

The concept they were going for is that 15% of the population should have an advantage in every area because the color of their skin is the only thing that matters. From that perspective, they nailed it.

Every year on November 11 we celebrate Veterans Day and honor all service members living or dead, including these sailors. I think it is four-fold:
1. It was close to WWII but nowhere near as big.
2. It was a relatively short war, as compared to Vietnam or Iraq/Afghanistan
3. It's duration and scale and timing means that most people don't have a relative who served in Korea, and it is not always in mind unlike a total mobilization like WWII or a long-running conflict like Vietnam
4. We were fighting communists but we didn't completely lose, which is an unacceptable thing to acknowledge in Hollywood, much less commemorate (though MASH was indeed set in Korea).

AltaVista was owned by Digital Equipment Corporation, and I never quit using the original URL of "altavista.digital.com" and eventually someone told me that I could drop the ".digital" from it. I never knew.

Excite was stand-alone, I think. Eventually most of them got eaten by Yahoo, until Google came along with its wildly better results and rapidly dominated the market. Now, of course, you can't use Google to get good results.

Sort of. Gopher is its own protocol designed for document storage, identification and retrieval. It had built-in search and was often quite effective. Gopher, although it ran on the IP protocol and used the internet, was not the World Wide Web. The Web displaced it, and its search went away with it.

206 My best friend, best man at my wedding, is giving a eulogy today for a man we will call Sid.

Sid passed away a few weeks ago but they delayed his service until today because of his profound military service.

Sid was a small Jewish guy who volunteered in world war II after Pearl Harbor. Through merit he worked his way up to a mid-level NCO in a frontline infantry unit that was used for hard jobs. He did Italy, he did D-Day, he went all the way to a concentration camp liberation, he was offered a commission and post-war career slot. He went home and married his high school sweetheart instead, and became an extraordinarily successful businessman. He excelled his entire life and was healthy and competent until he quietly and peacefully passed away.

His eulogy is given today by his stepson, to whom Sid was a lifelong inspiration. His stepson was Ranger Battalion (first wave Panama jump) crossed over to SOF and then mavericked into an officer position and retired out as a Major with 32 years in.

I had the privilege of editing Sid's eulogy for my friend. If you lift a glass today think about the Sids that have protected our country and raised our parents, our siblings, us...

What an embarrassment. It's not like Canada doesn't have a long history of heroic and effective combat. Just because it has often been a subordinate power (to Britain or to the US) doesn't mean they don't fight like motherfuckers when they've needed to.

Hell, they even had one of the better WWII mascots for the home front. We had Rosie the Riveter, but you had the far superior Ronnie the Bren-Gun Girl:

Great-grandfather Poppins was in the Navy during the Spanish-American war. I have his "service book" somewhere. 239 I think the ratio (at least during the Vietnam War) was about 4 guys in the rear to support 1 guy on the line.

This included the Air Force who's bases were in Thailand mostly.

I know we performed SAR (Sea, Air Rescue) for the flights into N. Vietnam. Our ship had 300 guys supporting about 50 - 150 planes. And there were more than one ship acting as SAR.

Then there were the Medevac Helos which were a combination of rear support and front line.

Plus a lot of guys who couldn't manage combat were put into places where a warm body was needed while another went into combat. Many women serving supplied personnel for supply and clerical in all wars. They too deserve our gratitude, prayers and honor.

He never talked much about it to any of us. He was called back to service during Korea. He was the back seat radar operator in an F94. He was under orders to Korea, when President Truman released from duty any one with 3 dependents.

My uncle Joe was in a tank in Pattons division during WWII. His brother was pinned down at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. My uncle volunteered to be in the first of the tanks into the battle, and he was in that first tank. The Sherman tanks he was in were nicknamed "Ronsons" after a popular brand of cigarette lighter who's motto was "Lights at the first strike", since the tanks usually caught fire the first time they were hit by enemy shells.

I spent two tours in Vietnam, it was probably the easiest assignment in the war, as I spent most of it living in Saigon. I had an air conditioned Hotel room downtown. I had exactly one combat patrol during that time, but there was no action. Other than guard duty, that was it. Mostly I counted boxes. (Army).

243 Somehow my grandfather missed service in WWI, he'd have been around the right age, but we have no record of him being drafted or serving either in Denmark or the USA. I wish I had asked more questions when he was alive. Even in his 90s his accent was pretty thick and it was hard to always understand him.

Probably worried that some of the Prosecution's table-pounding sunk in with some of the duller jurors and wants to make sure. But yeah, longer trials annoy jurors and they may harbor a grudge against the guy who was last up making it longer.

The lawyer panel is blasting them for being boring and not presenting a narrative. I have to agree. Richards needs to have the expert present the whole sequence of events as one continuous video. It would take about 3 1/2 minutes. Run through that fast. Talk about how quick everything happens. Then do quick breakdowns of key evens and how things happened in sub-second time frames.

Yeah, the usaf typical tac base, presumably sac as well, had about 25 or 30 support for every pilot. My estimate based on personal recollection. And there are several commands that support the strategic and tactical air commands, so ring up another big number of support personnel. The names of commands have changed but not the mission. Call it fifty airmen behind the point of every sword. But those can be some hellacious swords. And some crazy fks flying them. Look up the wild weasel mission.

I'm just old enough to feel the backstab there along with the more recent ones. All my SNCO's and more than a few O5's and up got their start sitting across the border from the Warsaw Pact; my time as a new guy was spent in the Clinton years rattling around in the hollow former shell of that military. My '78 Rolex Sub has, if you believe the watch sales sites, tripled in value from the $1500 I paid in 1998. Though mine is in great shape, it's not pristine or unworn, and didn't come with all the docs and the box. The Sub probably cost about $500 during Carter's term -- so it might have gone up 9-10x in value.

Service doesn't come with a government check. Stop conflating our Founders and Revolutionary War soldiers with the soldiers of today.
Founders - Fought to defend his property on his own soil against a foreign enemy.
Today's Military - Fights against a foreign enemy who's trying to defend his own property on his own soil.
We fought a bloody revolution against our own countrymen. The Founders all considered themselves to be "loyal British subjects" right up to the point where we started shooting each other. They fought against the most powerful standing army in the world.
The Founders feared and loathed standing armies and that's what our military is today. They are the ones who will follow orders when the time comes. And when they drag you naked from your bed at 3 am, I hope to God your children thank them for their service."
