Critical race theory was addressed years ago by Jesus Christ's teaching of "Love thy neighbor as thyself" and Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech. The problem with 'Central Planning'? It only works in the heads of the vacuous. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg appeared on the DC narrative shaping program hosted by swamp gatekeeper Chris Wallace. Within the interview Buttigieg was questioned about why West Coast port backups are worse now than before the White House announced their solution to operate ports 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Buttigieg proclaimed the ports are being impacted by the pandemic, and ships stuck in China are the reason why ships are sitting off the coast of California. Yeah, try to square that circular logic. LOL. The scale of incompetence, even in common sense politispeak, is off the charts. The illogical statements by this guy are legendary; however, he outdid himself today. Eventually Pete weaves his way through fourteen nonsensical catch phrases to get to a point where he proclaims nothing in the supply chain will start being more efficient until everyone is vaccinated. And yes, it appears that he is so stuck in pretzel-speak, Buttigieg actually believes that. The Left wants to ban coal. Supply and demand say, 'Not so fast'. Top U.S. coal miners are experiencing a massive surge in demand as power companies restart coal-fired power plants due to high natural gas prices to prevent electricity shortages ahead of the winter season. According to Bloomberg, Arch Resources, the second-largest U.S. coal miner, has sold every lump of coal it will extract out of the ground for 2022. The company has sold next year's coal for 20% over the current spot. Peabody Energy Corp., the top U.S. coal miner, has sold 90% of all its coal from the Powder River Basin area for 2022. Arch's CEO Paul Lang said the company's thermal coal output for 2022 is "fully committed." According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, Arch sold the coal for $16 per ton, well over last week's $13.25 spot price. The ONT moves into the Artsy-Fartsy world............ There is no such thing as "Man made climate change." Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' £48million Gulf Stream has led a 400-strong parade of private jets into COP25 including Prince Albert of Monaco, scores of royals and dozens of 'green' CEOs - as an extraordinary traffic jam forced empty planes to fly 30 miles to find space to park. Some environmental activists at the COP26 climate conference will be urging others to cut down on air travel and eat less meat, but little has been said about the billionaires flying in on their own planes on routes already served by commercial airlines. During President Trump's presidency we constantly heard about him and his children's business pursuits. Hunter "Snort" Biden's biz? Not so much. The latest round of art shows featuring paintings and other artwork by Hunter Biden are being funded by a radical far-left billionaire with a history of political activism, according to the Daily Caller. An exhibition of Biden’s work took place on October 1st at the Milk Studios in Los Angeles; Milk Studios is owned by billionaire businessman Moishe Mana. Mana has repeatedly donated to the Democratic Party, and was also behind several vulgar art displays with political messages behind them, including an infamous nude sculpture of President Donald Trump. A Florida woman was allegedly told by local police not to wear a planned Halloween costume or she would be deemed a protester, and fined or even sent to jail. When Catherine Uden picked out her Halloween costume, which resembles a condo tower, she probably wasn’t expecting to hear from the police. Uden isn’t a fan of a plan of a local condo building project, and integrated a mocking take on it as part of her Halloween costume for Hollywood, Florida’s Hollyweird Halloween block party. There’s no disputing that Uden has been a vocal and prominent critic of a local developer’s plan to build a 30-story condo on beachfront land. Currently, the land has a park and a community center. Since the land is publicly owned, a vote by city commissioners will be held later this year to decide on the matter. The reason I don't want to go is related to my comment at #11. Son of Doof has a volleyball playoff game that evening. Down in Baltimore, about a 40 minute drive. Doof, assuming you don't want to be on the jury in order to render a jury nullification (in the right case, of course), then you have two options.
In a criminal case, let them know a proper verdict in your eyes would be anything up to and including the death penalty. In a civil case, when asked if you could award a lot (and I mean a LOT) of $$ damages to a plaintiff, say you are against big jury awards because it always hurts corporations. Good luck! Not sure how your jury duty works there.
In Tennessee, there is a day where the entire jury pool comes for orientation, the grand jury is selected and you are given pool assignments and then leave. Then later, if your pool is called for selection, you show up and they select jurors. Neither of those meetings tend to take very long. Of course, other states may not meet at 8 am like we do, or follow this process. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at November 01, 2021 09:40 PM (L3SZH) 197

I'm sure it depends on jurisdiction, but around here they are pretty chill about Jury Duty. I get the sense they have a problem with people blowing off the summons and not going through the routine, a simple phone call ahead of time goes a long way. Now if you want to be stricken from duty they will probably ask on the questionaire something about "Fully Informed" jurists.
This is something they Don't Like. The intent of a jury under our system was not only to determine innocence or guilt of the accused, but also to weigh on the specific law itself. They don't want you to know that. For example, a jury or series of juries could repeatedly refuse to convict people for possession of the marijuana (or whatever). I'm not sure if this "fully informed" concept will get you a citation for contempt, but they don't want anybody on a jury who will refuse to convict because they think the law is stupid. A local fairly prominent Leftist has spent years denouncing homeowners - you see, houses are magic ATM machines, providing an enormous benefit to a small elite class of homeowners, who are probably Republicans. (Reality: more than 60% of the households in the Portland metro area own their homes.)
Well, needless to say, he has joined the Exploiter Class, and has bought a house in Portland. (Since the only jobs he's ever had are low-paid political hack jobs, and his girlfriend runs a thrift shop, I suspect a lot of Mommy and Daddy money is involved.) From Twitter: it's not an original thought (and i can't find the most recent viral tweet about it) but as someone that now owns a home, it really hits home how the cool thing about a mortgage is that it is essentially buying into a thirty-year guarantee of very strict rent control Why, the costs of homeownership are fixed and locked in for thirty years! He almost certainly bought an old house, and Portland voters always approve new taxes. Good luck with that. Posted by: The ARC of History! at November 01, 2021 10:03 PM (I2/tG) 307

And how can we be surprised by 11 million open jobs, combined with a massive labor shortage? The skills gap is not a mystery - it's a reflection of what we value. Unfortunately, many Americans don't value skilled labor. The are other reasons, obviously, for the current labor shortage, but the problem begins there - with a fundamental lack of gratitude for the lifestyle to which we have become accustomed. If you're not grateful to the people who bring you affordable energy, plentiful food, smooth roads, heating, air-conditioning, steel production, or indoor plumbing, you probably won't encourage your kids to explore careers in those fields. Likewise, can we really be surprised that many people - myself included - would rather be paid to not work, than to work? This is not a criticism - it's just a fact. Given the choice, most people will hit the easy button every time. [ ... ] I'm afraid things must sometimes go "splat," before the masses wake up. The idea of jury nullification came from when juries were empowered to try questions of both law and facts early on in our republic. This was a time where most of the law was common law and not statutory. Now, almost (perhaps all) state criminal law is now statutory and not common. Common law still applies in civil cases under some circumstances and jurisdictions.

I have never served on a jury. While I was active duty I got summoned every year. After I left the military I got summoned and dismissed every year.
I only ever got to hear part of a case I was asked to serve on. Most years I would get dismissed with out ever even sitting in the jury box. No idea why. I dressed business casual (jacket no tie) still had short hair and a trimmed mustache. These days I have longish hair and a beard and never get summoned. I was summoned several times in San Diego l although toward the end summoned just meant calling a phone number every night to be told my services wouldnt be needed the next day. Only served once. The last Corvettes that did it for me still had chrome bumpers.
Don't misunderstand, I'd take one if I won it, or I'd consider one if someone I knew was selling it for dirt cheap just to drive it for a year or two. Miley and I tried a little experiment with catfish tonight. We broiled it, using the oven's broiler for the first time. My mother had an heavy old time broiler pan that came with an old stove that I remember from my childhood. It dates back to at least 1960, maybe a few years before, and it had never been used. Big heavy one. Miley found a recipe for some marinating, and she broiled a mess of catfish, and that was some of the best stuff. I've decided I like the grilled/broiled better than deep fried now, but I still love the latter of course. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at November 01, 2021 10:19 PM (Mzdiz) 373

I had a bit of a scare the other day in a vintage mo'chine. The OIL light lit, and stayed lit. Pulled over right away. Full oil on the stick, no leaks, no knocking sounds. Tried reseating the connector, light still on. Oil pump almost new. I got the sense this was a sending unit problem and not an oil pressure problem.

- One, for those who know a bit about how to play poker. - Another, for those who *don't* know anything about playing poker. What surprises me, is why anyone is surprised. Currently, I'm trying to get to Vegas for this years SEMA show. My flight just took off, an hour and a half late. Why? No flight attendants. According to the gate agent, hundreds have refused to comply with the vaccine mandates. Maybe more. Maybe a lot more. Is anyone seriously surprised by this? We can discuss the wisdom or the foolishness of complying, but how can anyone be surprised that millions of workers in many critical industries have resisted the Biden mandate? All things considered; how could we think otherwise? I'm afraid things must sometimes go "splat," before the masses wake up. In this case, I'm not sure what "splat" looks like, but if I were to guess, I'd say it will involve a serious spike in the cost of food, energy, and construction. I'd say a lot of packages are not going to be delivered on time. And I'm pretty sure air travel as we know it, is going to get worse before it gets better. a 1960 Buick convertible which was strait out of the Jetsons. Beautiful car ! I would kill to have one!
If everything doesn't go completely pear shaped, if you can wait 10-15 years, there will be a glut of non-super special 50s and 60s cars on the market. The hobby revolves around people in their 50s and 60s with money wanting the cars they had or wanted in their 20s. Once they age out, there's a lot for sale and the supply exceeds the demand and the prices drop. In the 70s and 80s, most collector cars were prewar. Right now the prices on the normal 30s-early 50s cars are dropping (with inflation taken into effect of course) and 80s and 90s cars are increasing in price. Of course this doesn't apply to "special" cars, just " normal" cars. An LS-6 Cheve!!e SS of 1970 is always going to be a ton of cash. But a 396 may well drop in the future. Doof, QDP. Stand down, please. Let me suggest that you first ATTEND a TxMoMeet before you start throwing your own schedule bombs into the mix? WDS has it right, if you're gonna card-game, do it after TxMoMeet hours, at your hotel or RV. Otherwise? In the general assemblage, setting up a card-table will create an exclusionary environment. The players at the table are in the game, and those not, aren't. That'd be a NOT COOL at the TxMoMeet. And a "tournament" is right out. There's reasons that we don't do "competition" at the shooting events, and we're not going to shoulder the organizational load of a card-match, either. Take my advice, please. ATTEND, first.
Suggest, later. If at all. Posted by: Jim at November 01, 2021 11:03 PM (QzJWU) Point taken, Jim. Was actually talking about before or after the "official" activities. Yes, two piece broiler pan. Top piece is a "grill", or rather a slotted tray, which fits into a pan to catch the drippings. This old one of my mother's did a damn good job with the catfish. I can't remember the marinating recipe Miley found, but she was trying to get as close as close as she could to some of the local restaurant grilled catfish offerings. Soak the fillets in that for a couple of hours, then a total broiling time of just 6 minutes. Put it under for 90 seconds, then pull and brush some more marinating on, go another 90, then flip, marianate, 90 more, marinate again, and the final 90s. Came out damned fine. There are ONLY three people who determine the course of events at a TxMoMeet. Rancher Bob, his bride the Cow Horse Queen, and Ben Had. Weasel, myself and a select few others have "input", short of decision or control. And that "input" was either invited or earned, over time. Read Weasel's Gun Thread from last night. A LOT of preparation and work goes into the days leading up to the TxMoMeet. No small number of us show up days early to accomplish that work. The best input you could offer? (and I don't mean this as an insult, not in the least). Bring a truly premium bottle of *fill in the blank*, and set it out on the open bar. Quite the opposite, in fact. But DO please show up with a bit of quiet humility, use your ears n' mouth in the proportions that God provided, and arrive having erased all preconceived notions about the event from your mindcasting. You're lawyering the "endless card playing." Which is the very definition of a tournament. How bout you forget ANY card playing (other than in your own hotel or RV), altogether? Go with the TxMoMeet flow of events, and forget about even ever having even one of your fingers anywhere near the rudder of things? Run your own MoMeet as you wish. At the TxMoMeet, you'll be a welcomed guest. Enjoy your welcome, and your fellow Hordelings. That'll be quite enough to satisfy both you and your hosts. ..A poker shoot might be fun. Tape 12 cards, face down, to cardboard. Player gets six shots with revolver. Best 5-card poker hand wins. Not really competitive, because players are shooting the cards blind. Like a poker run with horses or motorcycles. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 01, 2021 11:59 PM (P3gRi)
That sounds like legit, actual fun! But, alas, the limiting factor is always time. We do the Handgun 101 thing for the newbies, and that chews up about three hours, right there. And we had a bit less pistol bay time this year, than last. The rest of the time? We try to keep open for folks to shoot the vast collection of toys we leave out on the table. Rotate as many shooters through as we can safely manage. And that's the larger point. We just try to keep it loose, keep it fun, and keep it SAFE! another way out, which may, or may not w*rk, is to dress uber casual... if nothing is said, wear shorts & a t-shirt, preferably with a non-PC theme.

When I was in my 20s, I got called for jury duty for the first time. That was one of the most disillusioning episodes of my life. Sort of induced cynicism in me. I could go on, but a poor ol' guy had to admit he was illiterate early in the process -- he could read the form he had to fill out. Damn judge let him through, and had a clerk read the questions for him and take down his answers. I felt sorry for the guy -- he was clearly embarrassed and ashamed, but damn, he should have been sent home right then and there. Reminds me of another funny Law and Order moment. It was good until there at the last when they got so damned political. But a few of those were still good, when they occasionally did a decent story without the politics. It was one of these, after Jack McCoy got to be the big DA (or at least acting big DA, before he got elected), and they had this new guy doing the exec ADA job, Cutter, with some hottie as his assistant (this was Alana de le Garza). Cutter notices a male juror has the hots for his gal. So he gives her the big break of letting her handle a crucial cross-examination. She thinks he thinks she's got real legal talent. She finds out later it was just because that juror was staring at her legs and ass, and Cutter used that to their advantage. She gets in a huff and complains to McCoy. He replies, "Well, you want me to put you in a burka?" Oh, before I go, something I just saw Karl Denninger is working on, and he'll have a full post about it in a day or two. I saw something about this a few days ago, he did too, and decided to run his own analysis of it. There appears to be some wide variation in AE (adverse event) reports in VAERS between various lot numbers of the vaccines, Moderna being the worst. He downloaded the entire VAERS data set, and that prompted a righteous rant in the Bar section of his forum. If you didn't know better, you would conclude that the govt. makes it as hard and convoluted as possible to use their supposed public data. It's like they want Joe Sixpack with a computer and some analysis skills to give up. Seriously, everybody public and private does this with data they are required to release but don't want to. They obfuscate the hell of it. Anyway, he's seeing this, and it's stark for Moderna. Huge variation of AEs vs lot number of the jabs. Most innocent, best case explanation for variation of AE with lot numbers: heavy confounding. Different populations get different lots, say, some lots were early with the elderly first and most high risk at first, other lots came later. Worst case: severe quality control problems of manufacturing. Hint, it seems to be more the latter than the former. I'm still reading, but some others have done the lot number analysis. We'll see if Denninger comes to the same conclusions from his own analysis. But, looks like that all vaccine associated deaths in VAERS came from just 5% of the lot numbers. And, my God, there is "curious" variation in which states got which lot numbers. This is chilling. Using flu vaccine as a control comparison, you see nothing like this lot number variation in VAERS. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at November 02, 2021 02:13 AM (Mzdiz) 734

Something I just saw. Orange County, CA, suspended one Moderna lot based on a ridiculous number of allergic reactions. This was early in this year. Funny, how we never heard much about that in the MSM. Moderna is the worst of this, but Pfizer has lot variation too. the one trial i was on, as up thread, was two drunken illegal aliens who had a domestic dispute.
after the trial, i asked the prosecutor why they weren't both just deported... she was not pleased. i voted to acquit, as did half the jury: the state had fuck all in the way of hard evidence, the "victim" recanted on the stand, and the arresting cops saw nothing to validate any struggle, in part because they never went inside the apartment. as i said in deliberations (i was foreman because no one else wanted to be) "would you want to be put away on such flimsy evidence? half the jury was willing to do so, because "you know he did it..." total waste of 3 days of my life, and for less than chump change. Up early to work out, esp. while the weather is cool(er). Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is purring near me on the floor, and I have coffee, and can look forward to my shave this morning. And my boss is still out of town. Winning! Felt strange not to have Wolf the late giant black cat here on Sunday, though -- the first Halloween in 10 years without his spooky panther-like presence. I hope the crematorium people call soon so I can pick up his urn. It needs a good spot to put it; my bookcases are crowded with his predecessors, and, well, books. Very interesting article by Daniel Greenfield at FrontPageMag, as linked by JJS in yesterday's Link-O-Rama, about Nicaragua...
It seems that the country has entered into the typical end stages of socialist control, with 40% ! of the country unemployed, midnight burials, and so on. Ya know, the country had a brief period of sanity, but the 'revolutionaries' never sleep. And so, Ortega and his merry band of country killers persisted and finally took full control. The outcome was certain. This is what is planned for us. Read this piece. https://tinyurl.com/2bk5xdpb John Kerry and Bernie is right in the middle of all this, fwiw.
