Want a good spook? Check that photo's name.

I was looking for a bat picture and snapped that one. The name was randomly assigned; I didn't pick it.

It just so happens that that is the 666th screenshot I've taken.

For a bat picture, for Halloween.

oooOOOOOHooooohhhh, scary!

creeeeepyyyyy....!

Back in time for some recut horror movie trailers.

The original one, I think: The Shining recut into a romantic comedy.

Really good one: Happy Gilmore recut into a horror-thriller.

One of the first ones: Mary Poppins recut into a very scary trailer.

Halloween recut as a romantic comedy.

Mrs. Doubtfire recut as a horror movie.

Silence of the Lambs recut as a romantic comedy.

Dumb and Dumber as a stalker thriller. This one's kind of easy, because it's a stalker comedy already.

Here's a cat with his own Deathmobile.

Inman: This guy chose the wrong purse to steal.

Biden is going as a Fighter Pilot for Halloween.

These classic dopes are dressing up as skilled gun owners for Halloween.

Embrace of disgrace.

Exit question: What scary movies are you watching this weekend? Which would you recommend? Or which are you thinking about watching, and want to know if they're any good?

I'd suggest two fun games-oriented movies: "Escape Room," about, well, lethal escape rooms that kill players one by one, and "Ready or Not," a movie about a creepy family with a strange tradition of requiring any new family member (like a new bride) to play a random game from their game room.

The whole family prays that this time the game won't be "Hide 'n Seek," but that's what it turns out to be.

Escape Room is actually PG-13 and doesn't feature any cursing or any gore. The violence is all suggested -- they cut away at the moment of gruesomeness.

Ready or Not is R-rated and they don't cut away. The heroine also curses. A lot. But it's kinda justified. The game of Hide 'n Seek they play is all kinds of fucked up.

Both are surprisingly fun and competently made. Escape Room is kind of a thriller with some horrific tones, and Ready or Not is a horror/black comedy, where some parts are actually chuckleworthy.

Neither is great, obviously. They're horror movies.

One more semi-recent one, from like 2012, that's pretty decent is "You're Next." The basic set-up is a family in an isolated location, beset upon by psychopathic killers similar to those in The Strangers. There's a twist, which of course I can't tell you about. I'll just say this about the twist: It's something I've wondered about in almost every single slasher movie, so I enjoyed seeing a movie explore that idea.

Oh, and The Strangers I liked too.

47 The most perfect horror movie I've ever seen was the original Paranormal Activity. Saw it at a midnight preview, free tickets, at The Ohio State University. At an ancient movie house. Packed theater. The audience made the movie. They screamed at the right spots, were quiet when they needed to be and we all just sat after it was over and the lights came up. The movie itself was ok but that viewing made it seem 1000%better.

it was more of an event than a movie. I guess it was kind of like Rocky Horror (not that I have seen that one but know it is an event). Blair Witch was about the lead up and how they would drop hints online. They hyped it up and made many think it was real. Or at least many pretended to think it was real.

As a stand alone movie, years later, it is pretty much meh. It was about that particular time when it came out. They used the net to push it and people wanted to think it was the scariest thing ever.

The town it was set in was Burkittsville MD. It is a creepy town, or at least it was back then. I took a relative there just for the fun of it as we were nearby. A weird town to be honest. But I bet they were sick of idiots like us driving through.

63 Some of my favorite spoooooky Halloween Prog-Rock albums for the musically adventuresome.

From France comes PULSAR with their 1977 opus "HALLOWEEN" featuring eerie, darkly atmospheric musical storytelling that is poorly translated, phonetically sung in broken English and makes no damn sense, yet it's one hell of a ride and the deeply weird but hella cool ending with a male soprano (!) opera singer who sounds like he's encased in a block of ice, is sure to raise some goosebumps.

https://tinyurl.com/m9yytper

Italy's GOBLIN and their soundtrack to Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA (1977) is a must at Halloween Chez Smiley. Amazing musicianship and the main theme alone is an all-time classic. But the whole album is a winner.

https://tinyurl.com/bsjm53ah

From Merrie Olde, BLACK WIDOW's album SACRIFICE (1970) is often erroneously called a proto-black metal album and/or a serious satanic album. It is neither of those things. It sounds more as if Jethro Tull wrote a tongue-firmly-in-cheek "Satanic" stage-play soundtrack and that turns out to be a whole lot greater than it sounds on paper. 116 I've never been big on horror movies - or maybe more precisely modern horror movies like Saw etc.. When I was a kid I was fascinated by the slow-burn types of movies, or the more camp (anything with Vincent Price).

One I loved at around 11 or 12 was The Shuttered Room. Got me to seek out HP Lovecraft. Really like The Haunting as well. Almost nothing visually but pretty creepy. Spiral Staircase is another. Unfortunately, freaking amazon has decided it's cheaper to buy Rifftrax versions of some classic halloween fair, so I'll be skipping that. I'd really like to see House On Haunted Hill without idiots trying to tell jokes. Meh. There's a bunch of Wild Wild West TV shows on YT, which has been keeping me entertained for a couple of weeks.

I suppose a pretty good "modern" horror movie (well, almost 40 years old) is Phantasm, but it's pretty tongue in cheek. It's free on amazon AND peacock right now (peacock seems to have every single one).

119 So the RNC has been calling the house for reasons I don't know or care, we got tired of the calls so we added their numbers to our call blocker.

We were marveling at both how a simple device can be so useful, and how old that device is and still works. (the second came about because the spouse was whining about the display not being backlit) I reminded that the device was at least twenty-five years old

Which got me thinking as to what was the oldest electronic thing that is still being used in the house. The faithful call blocker has everything else beat by over a decade.

yes it was good on a technical level but... the kids don't even form the losers club until over an hour into the movie.

not to be too SJW, but they introduce the black kid early and then you don't see him for an hour. since he's the only black kid you do wonder, "Wait, did they just forget about the black kid?"

363 I think in the early 70s America realized that the 60s blew the 50s. There was a HUGE 50s nostalgia boom that appealed to everyione, even teens. 460 I don't like horror or gore or gratuitous violence, especially when stoned. One night years ago, heavily-baked, i was watching some historical movie with my gf set in elizabethan england and several catholics (or something) were about to be burned at the stake for refusing to renounce their faith. As soon as the flame took hold, i was so viscerally horrified i had to leave the room.

I was mixed on it. One too many characters were not very likeable (take your pick). And some of the melodrama just didnt fit.

Oh...and more Canadian scenery that we have seen over and over again.

462 It wasn't until after the horrors of the Vietnam War that horror movies got dark.

I noticed something in a similar vein with classic radio programs, the "golden age" considered from the 1930s up until about 1957 or 1960. There were lots of creepy scary and science fiction, murder and whodunit over those years. But after that the character of radio programming and writing changed. Not nearly as well written, and the spooky stuff got really twisted.
