The Tappan Zee Bridge

polsnames.jpg

I know this isn't the most pressing problem plaguing America. But it is one of the most obvious and most galling. From post offices and office buildings to train stations and bridges and tunnels; most publicly funded construction eventually gets named for some politician whose claim to fame might be negligent homicide of a young woman (Ted Kennedy), or just a scummy mobbed-up machine politician (Mario Cuomo) whose soon-to-be disgraced son strong-armed NY into naming the new Tappan Zee Bridge after his father.

It's one more indication of their inflated sense of their own worth and the contempt with which they hold the rest of us. The Tappan Zee Bridge should be named after a great New York figure...perhaps a brave soldier or a great scientist or maybe even just leave it the way it was.

But the conceit that elected representatives have some right to have their names emblazoned on buildings and bridges is disgusting, and one that should end.

24 I submit that these projects (invariably named for Democrats, unless it's a wastewater treatment plant or garbage dump) be renamed. It celebrates whiteness. All of them should be renamed after BIPOC. For instance, Robert Byrd's name is on every structure in WV. They should replace it with George Floyd. George Floyd deserves his own state. This Cuomo Bridge should be named for Tawana Brawley. Anything with Kennedy on it should be changed to Kendi. I'm sure Dems will be fine with that. Because equity.

25 "But get rid of that awful Thomas Jefferson guy! What did he ever do?"

Right, all structures, streets or monuments named after those WASPy founders must be renamed, if not demolished. If renamed, they will find some trans or gay figure whose claim to fame is "enduring the hate from traditional white America".

Or maybe the entitles ones decide members of the current Junta deserve to have their name emblazoned down the side of the (formerly known as) Washington Monument ... which will now be painted in glorious rainbow colors.

So far those that helped the steal by fabricating evidence and running the coup are treated as the heroes, promoted with high honors, or Nobel Peace prizes.

I've lived and worked in WV for the Fed and seen what happens when the "urban" civil servant is transplanted in a rural area.

Based on current information, this shooting and death was no accident. It was the direct result of a catastrophic mishandling of a loaded firearm at all levels of the production company.

199 The PJ Media article says there was one, or maybe two accidental discharges before this fatal one. (I'm pretty sure they mean live round discharges). And people walked off the set because of safety issues.

They also note that if someone hired this unqualified girl (girlfriend/relative/whatever) they also are perhaps criminally negligent. ... Several of the crew had walked off because of safety, so the issue was clearly not dealt with ... which is negligence up the chain from the girl.

To me, Baldwin is in the crosshairs, since he deliberately aimed and fired ... apparently not acting, just "for fun". Plus he was in charge of making things safe -- instead he brought in a new crew that didn't care about the safety issues.

I do believe SNL and Mr Baldwin are hateful enough to go there.

Insanely stupid to have crew shooting the set weapon with live loads. Or even a duplicate weapon and having live ammo that fit the movie Colt on the production set. But of course leftists are arrogant enough to think they don't need to follow safety rules established by cis white men who were probably even icky conservatives.

A. This is almost certainly a story being floated by Baldwin's PR hacks to TMZ to give him cover. Maybe true, maybe not.

B. If you're an experienced shooter and you take a weapon to the range, do you not clear it and even clean it when you're done? If you handed that gun to a friend, you'd check that it was clear. What are the chances that they'd be able to just shoot you with it? If you know what you're doing, that chance should be slim.

Yes, I agree. However, how the inexperienced crew acted prior, or dressed or acted on the internet should not be an excuse whether they were male or female.

It helps exonerate Baldwin of the actual act of failing to be responsible with a firearm, AND, let's not forget that he has been involved in at least 11 movies prior that required firearm training, she was not.

So, Baldwin has even more to answer for than an inexperienced 24yo prop handler.

274 CBD--regarding the content: I've been saying the same thing for years now. After living in Illinois where nearly every road or bridge is named after a forgotten politician and where everyone knows who the secretary of state is because he caused his name to be placed on every DMV office accross the state. . . it got tiresome quickly.

In my version of Republic 2.0, I forbid politicians from aggrandizing themselves. No public edifice or weapons system may be named after a politician until 30 years after their death, and then only by 90% majority vote of the legislature and this must be a sole-topic vote--no attaching this as a rider.

275 On a less frivolous note wrt to the Rust camera gal getting killed. This points to big problem. You can have redundant safety procedures or stringent laws limiting who can own a handgun and they are useless when enforcement is not applied to everybody all the time.

276 I have been thinking that one thing we might do is get conservatives to move here. I think that would help. Maybe not much, but I know that my messages are getting through.

I am only one person.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 migrants left the Mexican southern border city of Tapachula on Saturday morning, bound for Mexico City.

The caravan immediately ran into a Mexican National Guard roadblock but appeared to break through, images on social media show. The images show a throng of people making their way past soldiers in riot gear and with plastic shields, yelling, "Libertad! Libertad! (Freedom! Freedom!)"

After pushing dozens of soldiers aside, the migrants could be seen walking in jubilation on their journey north. The soldiers made no attempt to pursue them or draw weapons.

Which one, the secession or the Klansman? For the former, it was during the Civil War and encouraged by the Union. For the latter, West Virginia is one of the whitest states in the nation (see #1, never had many slaves in the mountains). Ironically, the other whitest states are Maine and Vermont.

I think the Blue Mountain counties of Virginia should join West Virginia. They're more culturally akin, anyway. VA takes the punishment hit in population and representation, even if it becomes a blue state. WV gets more population, more income, and more representation. I think most people in WV are more grounded in life than half the people in the nation's 20 largest cities.

310 My first time commenting here, so forgive me if I am not following protocol. I just love this site and the work put in by Ace and all the COBs is impressive. Very interesting and enjoyable comments on the naming of bridges, buildings, and other things. Regarding the naming of U.S. aircraft carriers, Navy practice used to be to name them after historical naval vessels or battles. Unfortunately, this has been abandoned and I'm not sure what the rules are now, if any. And yes, it will always be the Tappan Zee Bridge. Let's Go Brandon!

312 my favorite story about a facility named after a pol is from the outer suburbs of Denver. the new jail was named after the still-living retired sheriff. in his retirement, he decided to go for hookers and blow. he got caught and spent some time as an inmate in the jail with his name over the door.
