The Morning Report – 10/18/2021

Friends, Morons, Countrymen. Be patient – J.J. Sefton will be back by the end of this week. There’s no smorgasbord of links today, but here are a few things to chew on.

*****

Who’s In Charge Here?

Pete Buttigieg was given a cabinet position, Transportation Secretary, for which he has no qualification or experience, as consideration for dropping out of the Presidential race just days before Super Tuesday. Panicked Dems had to stop Bernie Sanders, and getting candidates like Mayor Pete out of the way cleared the path for Biden to consolidate the non-Bernie vote and win the nomination.

We are now finding out that during this economic crisis, caused in part by a complete breakdown of transportation and supply chains, Pete has been off the job on a two-month paternity leave. Having just discovered that he was completely unplugged from his job, most of the media celebrated of course – a gay man taking paternity leave is catnip to the press.

The most revealing thing is that no one in media or politics really had any expectation that the Transportation Secretary would be involved in running his department.

Paternity Leave - 2.JPG

In the real world, jobs still have to be covered when someone is on maternity leave. If a harbor pilot is on leave, ships coming in to the port don’t just wing it with their own captain…another experienced harbor pilot is still necessary. If an Accounts Payable Clerk is on leave, someone else has to pay the company’s bills.

Buttigieg can actually take off the entire four years of the Biden presidency because he does not actually run his department, nor is there any expectation that he does. What’s scary is that the permanent bureaucratic class knows that they are the ones running this country, and unaccountable to whatever resume-padding person has the title of Cabinet Secretary.

An Open Border and the Criminals It Begets

This is from the Customs and Border Patrol’s website.
Multiple Criminal Aliens Arrested by RGV Agents

On September 30, Falfurrias Border Patrol agents apprehended a group of eight migrants, attempting to circumvent the checkpoint.

During processing, record checks revealed one of the subjects, a Guatemalan national was previously arrested in 2009 for sexual abuse, a second-degree felony by the Buena Vista County Sheriffs’ Office in Buena Vista, Iowa.

On the morning of October 2, Weslaco Border Patrol Station (WSL) agents apprehended two single adults shortly after they illegally entered the United States. During processing, record checks revealed one of the subjects, a Mexican national was convicted of criminal sexual offenses by the Oakland Police Department in California.

Saturday night, Kingsville Border Patrol agents arrested a migrant illegally present in the United States at the Javier Vega Jr. Checkpoint near Sarita, Texas. Criminal record checks revealed the subject, identified as Hilario Teodoro-Hernandez, was arrested for indecent liberties with a child in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Also on Saturday, McAllen Border Patrol agents apprehended a group of four migrants near Hidalgo, Texas. All subjects were taken into custody and transported for processing. Among the group was a 28-year-old male from El Salvador who is a confirmed Mara-Salvatrucha [MS 13] gang member.

By opening the southern border, the Biden administration has knowingly and deliberately thrown out the welcome mat to these hardened criminals. Joe Biden and Alejandro Mayorkas (Secretary of Homeland Security) are complicit in every rape, murder, and violent crime committed by an illegal alien who has entered this country under their watch. Mayorkas should be criminally prosecuted, and also taken to civil court for damages, for every one of these crimes.

NeverTrump’s Ongoing False-Flag Conservatism

Ace commented on Friday about the slap-fight going on between the NeverTrumpers at The Dispatch and the NeverTrumpers at The Bulwark. He pointed out that they’ve each chosen a different lane to try to elect Democrats, while pretending to be conservatives:

Bulwark / Lincoln Project: Vote Democrat to protest Trump and the Trumpification of the GOP.

Dispatch: Vote Third Party to protest Trump and the Trumpification of the GOP.

I’d like to add one more lane from the rainbow of faux-conservatives:

National Review: Don’t vote at all (or at least don’t vote Republican) to protest Trump and the Trumpification of the GOP.

Of course, they’re all working toward the same goal – convincing people to not vote for conservatives, and to elect left-wing Democrats.

Speaking of The Dispatch… It won’t surprise you to know that one of David French’s criticisms of Hungary’s Viktor Orban is that Orban’s government will not allow children to be sterilized and have their private parts mutilated as part of the gender transition fad.

Hungary Is No Model For The American Right – David French 08/05/2021 (Warning – link to The Dispatch)

And the regime just passed a law sharply limiting any promotion of homosexuality or gender transition to children. He has banned gender studies programs at Hungarian universities.

French has established a very disturbing brand for himself, but he is sticking with it.

Like Joe Biden, David French is someone I would never allow to be near a child. And like Joe Biden in 2020, David French was NeverTrump’s presidential candidate in 2016.

Recycling Follies

Savannah has not recycled the glass that it collects in its recycling bins for several years. Yet Savannahns still get the smug satisfaction of “recycling” when they put their wine bottles into their single-stream recycle bins. Then the city has to separate the glass back out and take it to a landfill.

It’s been more than five years since the city of Savannah quit recycling glass, but now it looks like that could change.

Savannah still accepts glass in its single-stream recycling program. But that glass does not get recycled.

City officials estimate glass alone costs the city $150,000 annually. They said in 2020, 25 percent of Savannah’s recyclables, including roughly 1,000 tons of glass, ended-up in the landfill.

It would be easier to have citizens just put the glass directly in the trash. But they won’t. They believe that the act of putting glass in the recycle bin means that it magically gets recycled.

My town has a recycle center that people bring much of their trash to. When the market for recycled glass collapsed, the recycle center quit accepting glass. But people insisted on “recycling” glass anyway, continuing to mix it in with cans and newspapers, forcing someone down the line to separate the glass back out. So finally, the recycle center established a separate glass-only dumpster. A great many residents of my town now dutifully bring their wine bottles to the recycle center, put them into the dumpster, and then the recycle center empties that dumpster at the landfill.

*****

That’s it for today. Be nice to one another, but be a thorn in the side of your oppressors.

I applied for an exemption to my company's vax mandate. Got a reply back that evening from the head of HR's account with the form I need to fill out. It has all kinds of questions like "Would complying with the COVID-19 vaccination requirement substantially burden your religious exercise? If so, please explain how."

My HR department included a comment that the questions did not originate from them but came from the government.

So...we should be putting it in a landfill.

16 First, there is no federal vaccine mandate. He announced that OSHA would be formulating a mandate, but that has not happened yet. In anticipation of a possible federal rule, many companies have gone ahead and implemented a mandate. They are not answerable to the government for their mandates or for their religious exemption policies. Not yet. Maybe not ever, as Biden seems to have gotten most of what he wanted just through threats and intimidation. If you have issues with your employer, then an attorney could help as you are not fighting OSHA, you are fighting your employer. There could be local or state mandates for certain industries such as health care. These mandates may not recognize religious exemptions in all cases, so you may end up in court fighting a government after all.

The vaccines are daily proving less effective than originally stated. New treatments are coming online. Countries around the world are opening up fully, with no vaccine mandates. Highly vaccinated areas are awash in COVID illnesses. Time is against this type of vaccine.

21 We had a county recycling center that we dutifully supported for years with separate bins for glass, plastic, metal and paper. The county let the waste contract to a new firm last year that went curbside single stream only, and only in the largest town in the county, and shuttered the public facility. My quality of life went up dramatically and my dumpster is happy happy happy.

IIRC, Pete still managed to take time during his manternity leave to announce that he was considering a vaccine mandate for all air travelers. He's only on the job for implementing socialist policy like a mileage tax and vaxx mandates, not the boring stiff like making sure our transportation infrastructure doesn't collapse in response to Biden's declarations.

And this is why cleaning up elections won't matter. Elected representatives, cleanly elected or not, don't run the government. Dirty little secret here: The Republic isnt.

Decimation of the bureaucracy with strict term limits on all gubmint jobs, all levels, is the only way back. That or blow it up start over.

Real answer - it makes the Karen's feel better if Maria washes their trash before she throws it in the recycling bin.

48 Which Contractors Are Subject to the New Requirements?
Covered Contractors are those who enter into a new contract or contract-like instrument that contains a clause incorporating the Guidance, which is to be developed by October 8, 2021 by the Federal Acquisition Regulatory Council (FAR Council) prior to a formal rulemaking. The new requirements must be incorporated into covered[1] contracts awarded prior to October 15, 2021 whenever an option is exercised or an extension is made. The new clause will have to be incorporated into covered contracts awarded on or after November 14, 2021; for covered contracts awarded between October 15 and November 14, 2021, agencies are encouraged to include the clause but are not required to do so except where the solicitation for the contract was issued on or after October 15, 2021. Prime contractors must also include flow-down provisions incorporating the clause into subcontracts, which must flow the clause down to all lower-tier subcontractors.

59 Recycling at one time was valid. Prices for glass and certain plastics helped to pay for it. 1992-1995 stuff, ancient history.

The market got so glutted, no one buys the recycled materials like glass or plastics anymore and the meth and crack communities grab the good metals like aluminum, brass, etc.

Recycling curbside is now just another government scam/lie as all of it ends up in the incinerator or the landfill.

Oh dear. Friend in denver relayed the following about a year ago: homeless couple set up camp in the bushes of her church. Church has a nursery school and kids were frightened by the couple, and also, no one wanted to deal with the waste (bio and otherwise). Church kindly asked the couple to move, offfered to assist in transition and other needs. Couple then set the church on fire, half of it burned down -- church built in 1800's destroyed.

So, good luck to that parish, they may be in for some challenges.

On October 12, 2021, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) submitted its draft of the proposed enforcement standards to the White Houses Office of Management and Budget for review (OMB), advancing President Bidens vaccine mandate for private employers to an impending compliance reality.

Part of me still thinks this won't see the light of day. Now that large businesses and the public are finding out the effect of firing a sizable portion of their employees and as vocal resistance increases, I would not be surprised if the draft standards were "withdrawn for review".

Of course, the Left's "damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" approach is another possibility.

69 Mornin', all,

When I took Chekov to his new vet in the suburbs on Saturday, there was no face diaper sign on the door. Not that I was going to wear the stupid thing anyway. But at least half of the human patrons did have the damned things on. The girls behind the counter, when I first walked up, were not wearing the muzzles. A little later, one of them was. She blinked at me and said, "If you'd like a mask, we can give you one."

I chuckled. "No," I said. "I don't wear those things." End of discussion.

Petco also did not give me a hard time, nor did the independent pharmacy where I had one of the cat's Rxs filled. They had signs on the door, and a lot of the sheeple were muzzled, but no hassle.

Lousy-ana it is, God help me, and the nonsense was worse earlier this year. At my favorite grocery a security guard (!) as much as told me my doctor's letter to get out of wearing the thing was a fraud (it isn't); and the manager of an auto parts store called me a liar as well. I got both of them in *serious* trouble with their superiors.

Technically the charade is still on; Dollar Tree, Walmart, and others still have signs up requiring customers to wear the face diaper of submission. I ignore them and walk in without trouble. I suspect the management has thrown up their hands about enforcement of the craziness. The grocery where I had the guard trouble no longer hassles anybody and has only a "recommended" sign up -- which is why I continue to shop there.

110 I have a friend who used to work in a waste disposal company. He used to argue that we should use inmates to sort trash for recycling. He pointed out that what they do, eg, license plates, could be done privately for profit, but the sorting is hard to make money off of.

Posted by: Eeyore at October 18, 2021 07:02 AM (7X3UV)

111 Metals recycle well. The energy transaction makes sense. There is a reason why, in all of the recycling propaganda when I was a kid, aluminum cans were front-and-center. "One recycled can saves enough energy to power a 40-watt light bulb for {x} minutes!" It's true. Metals - especially aluminum and steel - are wonderful recyclers. That's why there's money in it.

Plastic isn't, generally, a good recycler. Paper *never* is. It can "save trees" but even that doesn't work because the paper companies plant a ton of trees. If you want more trees you should waste more paper. Paper recyling is also an extremely dirty industrial process that is a net-negative for pollution. Paper recyling never ever makes sense. Glass, on a net-energy transaction, isn't a good recycler either. Reuse is quite wonderful for glass, and if you happen to be near a bottling plant of some kind, that is often done. A bottle can be sanitized, polished, refilled and recapped for way less energy than making a new bottle.

"Recycling" plastics no longer means taking the plastic and refabricating it to the same or some other new end use. The new push is now to toss it into a refining process and break it down into petrochemicals or even its constituent monomers.

I had this idea about 30 years ago but when I proposed it to my lords and masters, they pooh-poohed it. Maybe it was just because it came from me. Another case of premature innovation.

Speaking of which, I got caught in a traffic jam because of an overturned bit of construction equipment. Naturally, everyone else was using the side roads like I was. I got to work about 15 minutes late and for some reason my badge wasn't working.

I'm done. I have coffee and don't care about much at the moment.

A local children's hospital here, located on the grounds of an estate formerly owned by one of the DuPont family members, is surrounded by a wall whose top has broken glass embedded in it.

Be glad you don't work for my old company. That was one of the ways they'd fire people. Get in for your shift and find that your badge doesn't work. Go to the security desk to get them to fix it and then you'd be told to wait a moment and then up the boss and the HR rep come to escort you to clean out your desk.

What made it even better is that the door badge system was pretty unreliable, so badges not working properly was semi-routine. But you never knew if it was a normal foul-up or your last day at work. It's like they were running a psychological experiment on the workforce...

Apparently I'm not going to get fired right away. Now I'm past the full SS retirement age limit, so I could receive my SS benefits starting now without a penalty while working. (Full amount on that is a good 2 years away; I don't want to wait for that.)

Would it make sense to take it now, save as much as I can and live on the rest, while socking an equivalent amount from my paycheck into my retirement account for the next year? My employer matches all or part of that, I know. So I could let them increase the amount I'll get when I do retire, while taking my SS and still saving everything I can. Make sense?

I understand that the heat wakes then from their lethargy and they are looking for a warm place to live and ultimately die but we cannot figure out how they are getting into the house.
We know they gather at our side door and we have stopped using it. We come through our screen porch and yet they continue to get in.

China.

And then China said "nah, bruh, we done with this," and now there's no more pretend market for it so pretty much everything is thrown away, piled up, and burnt over here instead. You can search for China+green+fence if you want to read more.

How has no one yet referenced Sir Humphrey Appleby?

But this is, of course, correct. There's no expectation, nor should there be, that the Secretary of Transportation actually be involved in Transportation issues. He's there to brief the actions and desires of the actual transportation bureaucracy to the President in Cabinet meetings, and to fight for the department's budget in front of Congress. On "paternity leave" he's useless at dealing with the relevant issues; at his desk from 9-to-5, he'd be just as useless.

294 "How can anybody go on believing in the absolute farce of these "vaccines?" They. Don't. Work."

Sigh.

This is, of course, nonsense. The vaccines have been very effective at what they are supposed to do - train the immune system to fight off the virus. The idea that the vaccine kind of encases people in a plastic bubble and you'll never, ever be infected or get sick is just silly. The "breakthrough" cases are not new, or unsurprising, but never, in the history of human medicine, have we introduced a virus and continued mass testing of asymptomatic individuals, so we don't _know_ how many people were infected with polio or measles or smallpox or influenza and fought it off without any issues, but we can be pretty confident that the answer is not zero.

Vaccine mandates? Terrible idea. Vaccinating children? Statistically, just a waste of resources. There are people who should be getting vaccinated, but many others who could rationally decide that they don't need or want it. The drive to vaccinate those who have already achieved immunity by having recovered from it is idiocy. But "They. Don't. Work." is idiocy, too...

308 Vaccine mandates? Terrible idea. Vaccinating children? Statistically, just a waste of resources. There are people who should be getting vaccinated, but many others who could rationally decide that they don't need or want it. The drive to vaccinate those who have already achieved immunity by having recovered from it is idiocy. But "They. Don't. Work." is idiocy, too...
Posted by: lyford at October 18, 2021 07:36 AM (IapkH)
++++
One quibble: vaccinating children (and young adults) is not just a waster of resources, it is a net negative. They tend not to get severe cases of COVID even when they do catch it. So the risks they face from the disease are tiny and non-guaranteed (you have to get it to face the minor risks). The risks from the vaccines are taken immediately, and repeatedly with each booster. The on-balance risk of vaccinating children is negative for the vaccine, and likely negative for young adults after a booster gets into the mix (where you face the known risks again).

Vaccinating children and young adults who don't have chronic risk factors isn't a wasteful exercise, it's a dangerous one.

Do these vaccines appear to be training immune systems to fight off covid? We've already gone from "this will prevent you from catching bat flu" to "it will lessen your symptoms."

I'm looking here at my antiquated '90 Webster's New World Dictionary, with its torn edges, and it says this about vaccines:

vaccinate - to inoculate with a vaccine to prevent disease

vaccination - 2. any preparation so used to produce immunity to a specific disease

Pardon me for taking that at face value...

339 When I moved into my first home, I had to replace the front storm door. It was nearly all aluminum. I took the door apart, removing the glass and rubber, even the handle. Then I cut the rest apart so it fit into the 2 x 2 x 2 foot bin I had for recycled metals. When I arrived home from work the next day, I found the metal still in the bin with a note that they did not accept metal "like that." So that aluminum went into the trash the next week.

I tried once more with an exercise machine about a year later, same thing, removed all the non-metal, checked all the remaining parts with the magnet to make certain they were steel, put it all in the bin. Once more, they were unwilling to accept.

That was the end of my recycling efforts.

365 When I arrived home from work the next day, I found the metal still in the bin with a note that they did not accept metal "like that." So that aluminum went into the trash the next week.

I tried once more with an exercise machine about a year later, same thing, removed all the non-metal, checked all the remaining parts with the magnet to make certain they were steel, put it all in the bin. Once more, they were unwilling to accept.

That was the end of my recycling efforts.

You're welcome; We all have bad days or more than one at work. Me too, of course, but I find that one's attitude helps a lot. Yesterday I was exhausted after a really long week in which I worked everyday (It was a productive week though) even though I am supposedly PT. So I was blessed that a man in the congregation whose burial of his wifes ashes took place on Saturday said in church on Sunday, "I just want to tell you (he meant the congregation) that I love you you all and appreciate the support " That is what the church is supposed to be-supportive and loving. And then in the evening as we were going to the store (FenSpouse and I) saw the half arch of a rainbow and it was beautiful. if we had come out five minutes later we might not have seen it, so I try to look for things to be thankful for everyday too and it helps me (It probably also helped that I didn't have as much time to read the ASHQ "Daily Doom" even though I appreciate the commentary and all the posters (well, not the trolls)

482 O/T rant. I moved recently and so there is stuff I don't have sorted out yet - like a decent mechanic, for example. Finding places in a new town has actually gotten *harder* in this new world. There used to be three ways:
1. Drive around and look
2. Ask someone
3. Look in the Yellow Pages

There are now three ways, too:
1. Drive around and look
2. Ask someone
3. Look online

The new way is worse. When you ask people, they tell you to look online (in my experience). When you look online, it's a gigantic mess. The sponsored results and the normal results are mixed together, the online systems consider your small town to be the same as the big city next door, every site has different results, the reviews are mostly hokum, and you finish the exercise more confused and angrier than when you started.

I never thought I'd say it, but it's getting to the point where I pine for the Yellow Pages.

his wife and he both got COVID same timeframe; they live in a very posh area with the best care. they weren't exposed - they got it from the booster.

like so many. you are vulnerable in a 10 day to two-week window after an mRNA shot - it shatters your immune system.

This is a good comparison, honestly. This gave so many people meaning to their lives. The sense that they were "doing something" by going down the aisles at the Walmart in one direction. Intuition - "gut feelings" and the like - are mental shortcuts. The gut instinct is informed by the total experience of the individual and all information feeding their senses. Intuition and "gut feelings" and "hunches" are essentially unstructured, unarticulated data.

When hunches are informed by tremendous experience in scientific and public service, they're better-informed and more reliable than hunches on average. Our expert class's hunches are usually better than the reasoned, articulated justifications of non-experts.

Last year would have marked the 50th parade, but the event was cancelled due to the pandemic. This year's events also didn't materialize, but not entirely because of COVID-19. Rather, Boston Pride celebrated a half-century-plus of existence by collapsing into social panic and cancelling itself. I mean this literally: Boston Pride no longer exists. Posted by: redridinghood at October 18, 2021 07:11 AM

Then he should be counted as a "vaccine" death. But they are counting death of any cause X days after "positive COVID test" as "COVID death". Funny that they are not counting death of any cause X days after "vaccination" as "COVID 'vaccine' death".

If he was fully "vaccinated" and still died of COVID, then logically, this is a high profile case of the "vaccine" not preventing death. Going to be interesting to see how they spin this. I imagine they will call this a "breakthrough death" (like a "breakthrough case"). Whatever they need to do to honor the narrative.

574 A great many residents of my town now dutifully bring their wine bottles to the recycle center, put them into the dumpster, and then the recycle center empties that dumpster at the landfill.

Penn and Teller had a "Bullshit!" episode years ago focusing on recycling. I remember part of the episode talked about how instead of just one truck coming to pick up all garbage, now one truck had to come pick up garbage and another separate truck had to come pick up "recyclables". And no, the "recycling truck" was not an electric vehicle, but another gaia-destroying gas-guzzler like the garbage truck.

https://bit.ly/2Z4zmhS

Exposing the reality behind recycling, a supposedly pro-environment activity that in actuality creates pollution, has to be subsidized by the government because it's cost ineffective, and is completely unnecessary because, contrary to popular belief, our landfills are not running out of space.

575 The vaccines are daily proving less effective than originally stated. New treatments are coming online. Countries around the world are opening up fully, with no vaccine mandates. Highly vaccinated areas are awash in COVID illnesses. Time is against this type of vaccine.

Posted by: rhennigantx at October 18, 2021 06:34 AM

This is why I don't understand the point of "religious exemptions". There is no need for one when facts and logic should be sufficient.

i.e. "The so-called COVID vaccines do not provide the vaccinated immunity from either infection or spread of the virus/disease. So there is no scientific, health or logical basis to mandate them. Period."

Of course, we're dealing with people who made it the law of the land to allow women to mass murder babies in the womb based on "emanations and punumbras" supposedly found in the US Constitution. So these evil assholes stopped caring about science, health or logic (or the law) a long time ago.

Considering (1) the PCR tests do not work to diagnose if anyone actually is infected with SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 (and were never meant to do so) and (2) they are calling all deaths of any cause "X days after a positive COVID test result" a "COVID death", who the hell knows if any of the data on COVID deaths is correct. Once again, it's the dying "with" vs dying "of" that is at issue. The "COVID death count" is counting "with" and "of" both as "COVID deaths". It's completely FUBAR.
