Daily Tech News 15 October 2021

Top Story

  • The cache on AMD CPUs is up to 12 times slower on Windows 11 than on Windows 10. (Tom's Hardware)

I don't know how they managed that. The article carefully measures and explains the effect - and that this drastic reduction in cache performance only means that your applications run 7% slower - but doesn't go into why.

A fix is expected next week, but nothing I've seen, including AMD's own announcement of the problem, discusses why it is happening.

  • But new emojis. (WCCFTech)

Yes, the people working on emoji updates for Windows 11 are entirely independent of the team fixing the cache latency issues, but still.

Tech News

  • The Radeon RX 6600 is pretty much sold out already. Checking two online stores here in Australia, each is down to a single model, after having at least five on launch day.

How much of that is lack of supply and how much was pent-up demand for a card at anything on the same planet as a reasonable price I don't know. Performance is generally within 10% of Nvidia's RTX 3060 - mostly slower, but sometimes faster, depending on the game - but the retail price was about 40% lower than the 3060.

  • Ubuntu 21.10 is here. (Serve the Home)

I'm mostly interested in the LTS releases, which will next appear with 22.04, but 22.10 is a good indicator of what will make it into 22.04. I'll give it a try in a VM at least.

  • If you join a banned Telegram channel in Belarus you will go straight to jail. (Bleeping Computer)

Who do they think they are, Melbourne?

  • There is no cloud, there's just, um, your computers. (ZDNet)

Google Distributed Cloud Hosted runs Google's management software on your own servers, so you can run them as if they were Google Cloud without actually depending on Google Cloud.

The Google Cloud management dashboard is actually pretty nice, and it sounds like this works without needing to connect to the actual Google Cloud at all, which is definitely a win.

  • Apple will probably be announcing stuff next week. (ZDNet)

Everyone is watching for a version of Apple's M1 CPU that supports more than 16GB of RAM. Intel and AMD's laptop CPUs all support 128GB, and even if that's rarely implemented, if you shop around for high-end professional laptops they do exist. Apple is currently stuck using Intel chips for anything beyond basic requirements. For all the efforts of the tame Apple press to insist that 16GB is enough for anyone, anyone who uses Adobe software knows that ain't so.

  • Crystal 1.2 is out. (Crystal-Lang)

Crystal is one of the four new-ish programming languages worth watching, alongside Nim, Rust, and Julia. It's basically a compiled version of Ruby with the worst parts of Ruby removed and performance that is orders of magnitude better. (Nim is basically the same thing for Python.)

Kind of Nuts But in a Good Way Video of the Day

This is a Minecraft server built by Hololive fans - in four months. According to the video, this is in survival mode. That is, not only has everything you see been put together by hand, one block at a time, those blocks were mined one at a time while fighting off all the monsters in the game.

Slightly odd for me because that I know that music as Pina Pengin's theme, and she's with rival vtuber agency Prism Project.

H & I is ending Hill Street Blues's run on the channel with tomorrow morning's 2 episodes. I'll miss it; it was a lower-key and more entertaining series than what I have seen of NYPD Blue, Bochco's other famous cop show. The characters were warmer and more engaging, for one thing, and there seemed to be more humor. When the show was new, my then aunt-in-law, an NOPD uniformed captain, used to refer to it as "my training film."

7 Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is due for a trip to the doctor tomorrow. He's eating. When he first gets up he's unsteady, but then he seems to walk without difficulty. Plus he nipped me this morning when I petted him, which he has always done. If he has the energy for that, maybe he can't be *that* sick.

15 Good luck, San Franpsycho!

Dave's point about the monochromatic colors on cars today is spot on. White, gray, silver, black, with few exceptions. My first car, a '75 Ford Maverick, was a neat metallic green inside and out; but then I had 3 whites, silver, gold, dark blue, med. gray, gold again, 2 dark grays, and now ruby red. It's hard to find anything other than the Basic Four unless you buy a Mustang or a Camaro. You can get those in yellow or red.

Interiors are worse: gray and black, with the occasional beige. I did see a red Tesla last week with white seats -- not tan or beige, but white. Very startling nowadays.

18 And Ace's Twit vid about the tabby cat standing on his hind legs is remarkable, the more so because my big black cat Wolf will do that in a more limited way to look at something outside the window. His body is long, so he uses his height to get a better view. But he doesn't do it for long.

As for Chekov getting more medical attention than some people, well, I've got to do it. I can't explain to him, "Hey, buddy, look, money's tight right now." He expects me to take care of things. There's a very hot spot in Hell reserved for people who abandon or neglect their animals for mere convenience, and I'm sensitive to heat.

Yeah, American cars, especially the smaller ones, went through a bad stretch in the '70s and '80s. My '84 Ford Escort was terrible. But my Oldsmobiles and Buicks have been good, sometimes even great cars.

I wish the manufacturers could get the idea of contrasting colors, though. A dark car with a light interior looks very sharp; a light car with dark, less so, but it's better than having the same shade for both. And some more colors in the palette, please. MB used to have a beige, a caramel, a couple shades of gray, and a dark blue among others. Black, they tell us, doesn't show dirt. Ha.

32 I ran the benchmark for working with BlackMagic raw files yesterday, as i just decided to see how their new NLE works, and with 16 GB of Ram on the best laptop mac made in 2017, you can't even work on anything above like 1080p, which is damn near decades old now. Mac laptops need to be able to run much more than 16GB for the thing people would want them most for (besides the vanity of having a Mac)

Speaking of, i need to look into a new cheaper laptop for my mother, used basically just to view websites and thier security cameras, what should i get that won't require me to go there every day to fix some issue? Guess waiting till black Friday could be the best bet..... unless shortages raise prices by then.

No. It is what the asshoe bureaucracy does to any officer retiring with less than 10 years as an officer. Even though the law says that regardless of rank, my retirement pay is the average monthly pay for the last 3 years, there is "except if I didn't satisfactorily serve" and lists specific examples of not satisfactory serving, which are all disciplinary in nature. But there is also a "or whatever" clause. They make use of the "or whatever" and say that retiring with less than 10 years as an officer is not satisfactorily serving.

Yeah, I get that. I'm just saying what we all already know: they're not girls. I have found that lots of lefty "trans" defenders are shockingly ignorant of what the "trans" surgeries entail. It's always fun to clue them in on the messy details of what the surgeons actually do to "affirm" the patient's "real" gender.

Yep. It's particularly disturbing when you think of the children whose parents are shoving them down this path. The kids are too young and naive to realize what it's going to mean for their future. They will be deprived of ever experiencing normal sex lives, and having children (biological children, of course they can adopt or buy somebody else's babies like Buttigieg and his "husband" did).

There were some "trans" surgeons who wrote an article last week saying that puberty blockers should not be given to kids because they are not "completely safe and reversible" as the trans community has been saying for years. These docs, who are prominent in the trans community, say that the drugs cause the kid's genitals to be small and under-developed, which then makes the "transition" surgery even more difficult. The docs also said that if the puberty blockers are given before the kid has experienced an orgasm, he/she will probably never be able to experience one. But hey, parents get to virtue signal, and that's what matters!
